Linearly stable and unstable complex soliton solutions with real energies in the Bullough-Dodd model

We investigate different types of complex soliton solutions with regard to their stability against linear pertubations. In the Bullough-Dodd scalar field theory we find linearly stable complex ${\cal{PT}}$-symmetric solutions and linearly unstable solutions for which the ${\cal{PT}}$-symmetry is broken. Both types of solutions have real energies. The auxiliary Sturm-Liouville eigenvalue equation in the stability analysis for the ${\cal{PT}}$-symmetric solutions can be solved exactly by supersymmetrically mapping it to an isospectral partner system involving a shifted and scaled inverse $\cosh$-squared potential. We identify exactly one shape mode in form of a bound state solution and scattering states which when used as linear perturbations leave the solutions stable. The auxiliary problem for the solutions with broken ${\cal{PT}}$-symmetry involves a complex shifted and scaled inverse $\sin$-squared potential. The corresponding bound and scattering state solutions have complex eigenvalues, such that when used as linear perturbations for the corresponding soliton solutions lead to their decay or blow up as time evolves.

Massive gauge particles versus Goldstone bosons in non-Hermitian non-Abelian gauge theory

We investigate the Englert-Brout-Higgs-Guralnik-Hagen-Kibble mechanism for non-Hermitian field theories with local non-Abelian gauge symmetry in different regions of their parameter spaces. We demonstrate that the two aspects of the mechanism, that is giving mass to gauge vector bosons and at the same time preventing the existence of massless Goldstone bosons, remain to be synchronized in all regimes characterized by a modified CPT symmetry. In the domain of parameter space where the "would be Goldstone bosons" can be identified the gauge vector bosons become massive and the Goldstone bosons cease to exist. The mechanism is also in tact at the standard exceptional points. However, at the zero exceptional points, that is when the eigenvalues of the mass squared matrix vanish irrespective of the symmetry breaking, the mechanism breaks down as the Goldstone bosons can not be identified and the gauge vector bosons remain massless. This breakdown coincides with the vanishing of the CPT inner product of symmetry breaking vacua defined on the eigenvector space of mass squared matrix. We verify this behaviour for a theory with SU(N) symmetry in which the complex scalar fields are taken in the fundamental as well as in the adjoint representation.

Stability in integrable nonlocal nonlinear equations

Recently a variety of nonlocal integrable systems has been introduced that besides fields located at particlar space-time points simultaneously also contain fields that are located at different, but symmetrically related, points. Here we investigate different types of soliton solutions with regard to their stability against linear pertubations obtained for the nonlocal version of the Hirota/nonlinear Schrödinger equation and the so-called Alice and Bob versions of the Korteweg-de Vries and Bousinesq equations. We encounter different types of scenarios: Solition solutions that are linearly stable or unstable and also solutions that change their stability properties depending on the parameter regime they are in.

't Hooft-Polyakov monopoles in non-Hermitian quantum field theory

We construct exact t Hooft-Polyakov monopole solutions in a non-Hermitian field theory with local non-Abelian SU(2) gauge symmetry and a modified antilinear CPT symmetry. The solutions are obtained in a fourfold Bogomolny-Prasad-Sommerfield scaling limit giving rise to two different types of monopole masses that saturate the lower energy bound. These two masses only coincide in the Hermitian limit and in the limit in which the symmetry breaking vacuum tends to the trivial symmetry preserving vacuum. In the two theories corresponding to the two known Dyson maps these two masses are exchanged, unlike the Higgs and the gauge masses, which remain the same in both theories. We identify three separate regions in parameter space bounded by different types of exceptional points. In the first region the monopole masses are finite and tend both to zero at the boundary exceptional point, in the second the monopole masses become complex and in the third only one of the monopole masses becomes zero at the boundary exceptional point, whereas the other tends to infinity. We find a self-dual point in parameter space at which the gauge mass becomes exactly identical to the monopole mass.

Perturbative approach for strong and weakly coupled time-dependent non-Hermitian quantum systems

We propose a perturbative approach to determine the time-dependent Dyson map and the metric operator associated with time-dependent non-Hermitian Hamiltonians. We apply the method to a pair of explicitly time-dependent two dimensional harmonic oscillators that are weakly coupled to each other in a PT-symmetric fashion and to the strongly coupled explicitly time-dependent negative quartic anharmonic oscillator potential. We demonstrate that once the perturbative Ansatz is set up the coupled differential equations resulting order by order may be solved recursively in a constructive manner, thus bypassing the need for making any guess for the Dyson map or the metric operator. Exploring the ambiguities in the solutions of the order by order differential equations naturally leads to a whole set of inequivalent solutions for the Dyson maps and metric operators implying different physical behaviour as demonstrated for the expectation values of the time-dependent energy operator.

Spectrally equivalent time-dependent double wells and unstable anharmonic oscillators

We construct a time-dependent double well potential as an exact spectral equivalent to the explicitly time-dependent negative quartic oscillator with a time-dependent mass term. Defining the unstable anharmonic oscillator Hamiltonian on a contour in the lower-half complex plane, the resulting time-dependent non-Hermitian Hamiltonian is first mapped by an exact solution of the time-dependent Dyson equation to a time-dependent Hermitian Hamiltonian defined on the real axis. When unitary transformed, scaled and Fourier transformed we obtain a time-dependent double well potential bounded from below. All transformations are carried out non-perturbatively so that all Hamiltonians in this process are spectrally exactly equivalent in the sense that they have identical instantaneous energy eigenvalue spectra.

N-Extended Lorentzian Kac-Moody algebras

We investigate a class of Kac-Moody algebras previously not considered. We refer to them as n-extended Lorentzian Kac-Moody algebras defined by their Dynkin diagrams through the connection of an $A_n$ Dynkin diagram to the node corresponding to the affine root. The cases $n=1$ and $n=2$ correspond to the well studied over and very extended Kac-Moody algebras, respectively, of which the particular examples of $E_{10}$ and $E_{11}$ play a prominent role in string and M-theory. We construct closed generic expressions for their associated roots, fundamental weights and Weyl vectors. We use these quantities to calculate specific constants from which the nodes can be determined that when deleted decompose the n-extended Lorentzian Kac-Moody algebras into simple Lie algebras and Lorentzian Kac-Moody algebra. The signature of these constants also serves to establish whether the algebras possess $SO(1,2)$ and/or $SO(3)$-principal subalgebras.

Nonlocal gauge equivalence: Hirota versus extended continuous Heisenberg and Landau-Lifschitz equation

We exploit the gauge equivalence between the Hirota equation and the extended continuous Heisenberg equation to investigate how nonlocality properties of one system are inherited by the other. We provide closed generic expressions for nonlocal multi-soliton solutions for both systems. By demonstrating that a specific auto-gauge transformation for the extended continuous Heisenberg equation becomes equivalent to a Darboux transformation, we use the latter to construct the nonlocal multi-soliton solutions from which the corresponding nonlocal solutions to the Hirota equation can be computed directly. We discuss properties and solutions of a nonlocal version of the nonlocal extended Landau-Lifschitz equation obtained from the nonlocal extended continuous Heisenberg equation or directly from the nonlocal solutions of the Hirota equation.

Pseudo-Hermitian approach to Goldstone's theorem in non-Abelian non-Hermitian quantum field theories

We generalise previous studies on the extension of Goldstone's theorem from Hermitian to non-Hermitian quantum field theories with Abelian symmetries to theories possessing a glocal non-Abelian symmetry. We present a detailed analysis for a non-Hermitian field theory with two complex two component scalar fields possessing a SU(2)-symmetry and indicate how our finding extend to the general case. In the PT-symmetric regime and at the standard exceptional point the Goldstone theorem is shown to apply, although different identification procedures need to be employed. At the zero exceptional points the Goldstone boson can not be identified. Comparing our approach, based on the pseudo-Hermiticity of the model, to an alternative approach that utilises surface terms to achieve compatibility for the non-Hermitian system, we find that the explicit forms of the Goldstone boson fields are different.

Time-independent approximations for time-dependent optical potentials

We explore the possibility of modifying the Lewis-Riesenfeld method of invariants developed originally to find exact solutions for time-dependent quantum mechanical systems for the situation in which an exact invariant can be constructed, but the subsequently resulting time-independent eigenvalue system is not solvable exactly. We propose to carry out this step in an approximate fashion, such as employing standard time-independent perturbation theory or the WKB approximation, and subsequently feeding the resulting approximated expressions back into the time-dependent scheme. We illustrate the quality of this approach by contrasting an exactly solvable solution to one obtained with a perturbatively carried out second step for two types of explicitly time-dependent optical potentials.

Time-dependent metric for the two dimensional, non-Hermitian coupled oscillator

We provide a time-dependent Dyson map and metric for the two dimensional harmonic oscillator with a non-Hermitian $i xy$ coupling term. This particular time-independent model exhibits spontaneously broken $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetry and becomes unphysical in the broken regime, with the spectrum becoming partially complex. By introducing an explicit time-dependence into the Dyson map, we provide a time-dependent metric that renders the model consistent across the unbroken and broken regimes.

Complex solitons with real energies

Using Hirota's direct method and Baecklund transformations we construct explicit complex one and two-solutions to the complex Korteweg-de Vries equation, the complex modified Korteweg-de Vries equation and the complex sine-Gordon equation. The one-soliton solutions of trigonometric and elliptic type turn out to be PT-symmetric when a constant of integration is chosen to be purely imaginary with one special choice corresponding to solutions recently found by Khare and Saxena. We show that alternatively complex PT-symmetric solutions to the Korteweg-de Vries equation may also be constructed alternatively from real solutions to the modified Korteweg-de Vries by means of Miura transformations. The multi-soliton solutions obtained from Hirota's method break the PT-symmetric, whereas those obtained from Baecklund transformations are PT-invariant under certain conditions. Despite the fact that some of the Hamiltonian densities are non-Hermitian, the total energy is found to be positive in all cases, that is irrespective of whether they are PT-symmetric or not. The reason is that the symmetry can be restored by suitable shifts in space-time and the fact that any of our N-soliton solutions may be decomposed into N separate PT-symmetrizable one-soliton solutions.

Regularized degenerate multi-solitons

We report complex PT-symmetric multi-soliton solutions to the Korteweg de-Vries equation that asymptotically contain one-soliton solutions, with each of them possessing the same amount of finite real energy. We demonstrate how these solutions originate from degenerate energy solutions of the Schroedinger equation. Technically this is achieved by the application of Darboux-Crum transformations involving Jordan states with suitable regularizing shifts. Alternatively they may be constructed from a limiting process within the context Hirota's direct method or on a nonlinear superposition obtained from multiple Baecklund transformations. The proposed procedure is completely generic and also applicable to other types of nonlinear integrable systems.

The non-Hermitian Swanson model with a time-dependent metric

We provide further non-trivial solutions to the recently proposed time-dependent Dyson and quasi-Hermiticity relation. Here we solve them for the generalized version of the non-Hermitian Swanson Hamiltonian with time-dependent coefficients. We construct time-dependent solutions by employing the Lewis-Riesenfeld method of invariants and discuss concrete physical applications of our results.

A unifying E2-quasi-exactly solvable model

A new non-Hermitian E2-quasi-exactly solvable model is constructed containing two previously known models of this type as limits in one of its three parameters. We identify the optimal finite approximation to the double scaling limit to the complex Mathieu Hamiltonian. A detailed analysis of the vicinity of the exceptional points in the parameter space is provided by discussing the branch cut structures responsible for the chirality when exceptional points are surrounded and the structure of the corresponding energy eigenvalue loops stretching over several Riemann sheets. We compute the Stieltjes measure and momentum functionals for the coefficient functions that are univariate weakly orthogonal polynomials in the energy obeying three-term recurrence relations.

Generalized Bogoliubov transformations versus ${\mathcal{D}}$% -pseudo-bosons

We demonstrate that not all generalized Bogoliubov transformations lead to $\cal D$-pseudo-bosons and prove that a correspondence between the two can only be achieved with the imposition of specific constraints on the parameters defining the transformation. For certain values of the parameters we find that the norms of the vectors in sets of eigenvectors of two related apparently non self-adjoint number-like operators possess different types of asymptotic behavior. We use this result to deduce further that they constitute bases for a Hilbert space, albeit neither of them can form a Riesz base. When the constraints are relaxed they cease to be Hilbert space bases, but remain $\cal D$-quasi bases.

Milne quantization for non-Hermitian systems

We generalize the Milne quantization condition to non-Hermitian systems. In the general case the underlying nonlinear Ermakov-Milne-Pinney equation needs to be replaced by a nonlinear integral differential equation. However, when the system is PT-symmetric or/and quasi/pseudo-Hermitian the equations simplify and one may employ the original energy integral to determine its quantization. We illustrate the working of the general framework with the Swanson model and two explicit examples for pairs of supersymmetric Hamiltonians. In one case both partner Hamiltonians are Hermitian and in the other a Hermitian Hamiltonian is paired by a Darboux transformation to a non-Hermitian one.

Time-dependent massless Dirac fermions in graphene

Using the Lewis-Riesenfeld method of invariants we construct explicit analytical solutions for the massless Dirac equation in 2+1 dimensions describing quasi-particles in graphene. The Hamiltonian of the system considered contains some explicit time-dependence in addition to one resulting from being minimally coupled to a time-dependent magnetic field. The eigenvalue equations for the two spinor components of the Lewis-Riesenfeld invariant are found to decouple into a pair of supersymmetric invariants in a similar fashion as the known decoupling for the time-independent Dirac Hamiltonians.

Unitary quantum evolution for time-dependent quasi-Hermitian systems with non-observable Hamiltonians

It has been argued that it is incompatible to maintain unitary time-evolution for time-dependent non-Hermitian Hamiltonians when the metric operator is explicitly time-dependent. We demonstrate here that the time-dependent Dyson equation and the time-dependent quasi-Hermiticity relation can be solved consistently in such a scenario for a time-dependent Dyson map and time-dependent metric operator, respectively. These solutions are obtained at the cost of rendering the non-Hermitian Hamiltonian to be a non-observable operator as it ceases to be quasi-Hermitian when the metric becomes time-dependent.

A new non-Hermitian E2-quasi-exactly solvable model

We construct a previously unknown $E_2$-quasi-exactly solvable non-Hermitian model whose eigenfunctions involve weakly orthogonal polynomials obeying three-term recurrence relations that factorize beyond the quantization level. The model becomes Hermitian when one of its two parameters is fixed to a specific value. We analyze the double scaling limit of this model leading to the complex Mathieu equation. The norms, Stieltjes measures and moment functionals are evaluated for some concrete values of one of the two parameters.

E2-quasi-exact solvability for non-Hermitian models

We propose the notion of $E_{2}$-quasi-exact solvability and apply this idea to find explicit solutions to the eigenvalue problem for a non-Hermitian Hamiltonian system depending on two parameters. The model considered reduces to the complex Mathieu Hamiltonian in a double scaling limit, which enables us to compute the exceptional points in the energy spectrum of the latter as a limiting process of the zeros for some algebraic equations. The coefficient functions in the quasi-exact eigenfunctions are univariate polynomials in the energy obeying a three-term recurrence relation. The latter property guarantees the existence of a linear functional such that the polynomials become orthogonal. The polynomials are shown to factorize for all levels above the quantization condition leading to vanishing norms rendering them to be weakly orthogonal. In two concrete examples we compute the explicit expressions for the Stieltjes measure.

Non-Hermitian systems of Euclidean Lie algebraic type with real eigenvalue spectra

We study several classes of non-Hermitian Hamiltonian systems, which can be expressed in terms of bilinear combinations of Euclidean Lie algebraic generators. The classes are distinguished by different versions of antilinear (PT)-symmetries exhibiting various types of qualitative behaviour. On the basis of explicitly computed non-perturbative Dyson maps we construct metric operators, isospectral Hermitian counterparts for which we solve the corresponding time-independent Schroedinger equation for specific choices of the coupling constants. In these cases general analytical expressions for the solutions are obtained in the form of Mathieu functions, which we analyze numerically to obtain the corresponding energy eigenspectra. We identify regions in the parameter space for which the corresponding spectra are entirely real and also domains where the PT symmetry is spontaneously broken and sometimes also regained at exceptional points. In some cases it is shown explicitly how the threshold region from real to complex spectra is characterized by the breakdown of the Dyson maps or the metric operator. We establish the explicit relationship to models currently under investigation in the context of beam dynamics in optical lattices.

Noncommutative quantum mechanics in a time-dependent background

We investigate a quantum mechanical system on a noncommutative space for which the structure constant is explicitly time-dependent. Any autonomous Hamiltonian on such a space acquires a time-dependent form in terms of the conventional canonical variables. We employ the Lewis-Riesenfeld method of invariants to construct explicit analytical solutions for the corresponding time-dependent Schroedinger equation. The eigenfunctions are expressed in terms of the solutions of variants of the nonlinear Ermakov-Pinney equation and discussed in detail for various types of background fields. We utilize the solutions to verify a generalized version of Heisenberg's uncertainty relations for which the lower bound becomes a time-dependent function of the background fields. We study the variance for various states including standard Glauber coherent states with their squeezed versions and Gaussian Klauder coherent states resembling a quasi-classical behaviour. No type of coherent states appears to be optimal in general with regard to achieving minimal uncertainties, as this feature turns out to be background field dependent.

Nonlinear eigenvalue problems

This paper presents a detailed asymptotic study of the nonlinear differential equation y'(x)=\cos[πxy(x)] subject to the initial condition y(0)=a. Although the differential equation is nonlinear, the solutions to this initial-value problem bear a striking resemblance to solutions to the time-independent Schroedinger eigenvalue problem. As x increases from x=0, y(x) oscillates and thus resembles a quantum wave function in a classically allowed region. At a critical value x=x_{crit}, where x_{crit} depends on a, the solution y(x) undergoes a transition; the oscillations abruptly cease and y(x) decays to 0 monotonically as x-->\infty. This transition resembles the transition in a wave function that occurs at a turning point as one enters the classically forbidden region. Furthermore, the initial condition a falls into discrete classes; in the nth class of initial conditions a_{n-1}<a<a_n (n=1,2,3,...), y(x) exhibits exactly n maxima in the oscillatory region. The boundaries a_n of these classes are the analogs of quantum-mechanical eigenvalues. An asymptotic calculation of $a_n$ for large $n$ is analogous to a high-energy semiclassical (WKB) calculation of eigenvalues in quantum mechanics. The principal result of this paper is that as n-->\infty, a_n~A\sqrt{n}, where A=2^{5/6}. Numerical analysis reveals that the first Painleve transcendent has an eigenvalue structure that is quite similar to that of the equation y'(x)=\cos[πxy(x)] and that the nth eigenvalue grows with n like a constant times n^{3/5} as n-->\infty. Finally, it is noted that the constant A is numerically very close to the lower bound on the power-series constant P in the theory of complex variables, which is associated with the asymptotic behavior of zeros of partial sums of Taylor series.

Spontaneous PT-symmetry breaking for systems of noncommutative Euclidean Lie algebraic type

We propose a noncommutative version of the Euclidean Lie algebra $E_2$. Several types of non-Hermitian Hamiltonian systems expressed in terms of generic combinations of the generators of this algebra are investigated. Using the breakdown of the explicitly constructed Dyson maps as a criterium, we identify the domains in the parameter space in which the Hamiltonians have real energy spectra and determine the exceptional points signifying the crossover into the different types of spontaneously broken PT-symmetric regions with pairs of complex conjugate eigenvalues. We find exceptional points which remain invariant under the deformation as well as exceptional points becoming dependent on the deformation parameter of the algebra.

A non self-adjoint model on a two dimensional noncommutative space with unbound metric

We demonstrate that a non self-adjoint Hamiltonian of harmonic oscillator type defined on a two-dimensional noncommutative space can be diagonalized exactly by making use of pseudo-bosonic operators. The model admits an antilinear symmetry and is of the type studied in the context of PT-symmetric quantum mechanics. Its eigenvalues are computed to be real for the entire range of the coupling constants and the biorthogonal sets of eigenstates for the Hamiltonian and its adjoint are explicitly constructed. We show that despite the fact that these sets are complete and biorthogonal, they involve an unbounded metric operator and therefore do not constitute (Riesz) bases for the Hilbert space $\Lc^2(\Bbb R^2)$, but instead only D-quasi bases. As recently proved by one of us (FB), this is sufficient to deduce several interesting consequences.

Bohmian quantum trajectories from coherent states

We find that real and complex Bohmian quantum trajectories resulting from well-localized Klauder coherent states in the quasi-Poissonian regime possess qualitatively the same type of trajectories as those obtained from a purely classical analysis of the corresponding Hamilton-Jacobi equation. In the complex cases treated the quantum potential results to a constant, such that the agreement is exact. For the real cases we provide conjectures for analytical solutions for the trajectories as well as the corresponding quantum potentials. The overall qualitative behaviour is governed by the Mandel parameter determining the regime in which the wavefunctions evolve as soliton like structures. We demonstrate these features explicitly for the harmonic oscillator and the Poeschl-Teller potential.

Hermitian versus non-Hermitian representations for minimal length uncertainty relations

We investigate four different types of representations of deformed canonical variables leading to generalized versions of Heisenberg's uncertainty relations resulting from noncommutative spacetime structures. We demonstrate explicitly how the representations are related to each other and study three characteristically different solvable models on these spaces, the harmonic oscillator, the manifestly non-Hermitian Swanson model and an intrinsically noncommutative model with Poeschl-Teller type potential. We provide an analytical expression for the metric in terms of quantities specific to the generic solution procedure and show that when it is appropriately implemented expectation values are independent of the particular representation. A recently proposed inequivalent representation resulting from Jordan twists is shown to lead to unphysical models. We suggest an anti-PT-symmetric modification to overcome this shortcoming.

PT-symmetric deformations of integrable models

We review recent results on new physical models constructed as PT-symmetrical deformations or extensions of different types of integrable models. We present non-Hermitian versions of quantum spin chains, multi-particle systems of Calogero-Moser-Sutherland type and non-linear integrable field equations of Korteweg-de-Vries type. The quantum spin chain discussed is related to the first example in the series of the non-unitary models of minimal conformal field theories. For the Calogero-Moser-Sutherland models we provide three alternative deformations: A complex extension for models related to all types of Coxeter/Weyl groups; models describing the evolution of poles in constrained real valued field equations of non linear integrable systems and genuine deformations based on antilinearly invariant deformed root systems. Deformations of complex nonlinear integrable field equations of KdV-type are studied with regard to different kinds of PT-symmetrical scenarios. A reduction to simple complex quantum mechanical models currently under discussion is presented.

PT-symmetric noncommutative spaces with minimal volume uncertainty relations

We provide a systematic procedure to relate a three dimensional q-deformed oscillator algebra to the corresponding algebra satisfied by canonical variables describing noncommutative spaces. The large number of possible free parameters in these calculations is reduced to a manageable amount by imposing various different versions of PT-symmetry on the underlying spaces, which are dictated by the specific physical problem under consideration. The representations for the corresponding operators are in general non-Hermitian with regard to standard inner products and obey algebras whose uncertainty relations lead to minimal length, areas or volumes in phase space. We analyze in particular one three dimensional solution which may be decomposed to a two dimensional noncommutative space plus one commuting space component and also into a one dimensional noncommutative space plus two commuting space components. We study some explicit models on these type of noncommutative spaces.

PT-symmetrically deformed shock waves

We investigate for a large class of nonlinear wave equations, which allow for shock wave formations, how these solutions behave when they are PT-symmetrically deformed. For real solutions we find that they are transformed into peaked solutions with a discontinuity in the first derivative instead. The systems we investigate include the PT-symmetrically deformed inviscid Burgers equation recently studied by Bender and Feinberg, for which we show that it does not develop any shocks, but peaks instead. In this case we exploit the rare fact that the PT-deformation can be provided by an explicit map found by Curtright and Fairlie together with the property that the undeformed equation can be solved by the method of characteristics. We generalise the map and observe this type of behaviour for all integer values of the deformation parameter epsilon. The peaks are formed as a result of mapping the multi-valued self-avoiding shock profile to a multi-valued self-crossing function by means of the PT-deformation. For some deformation parameters we also investigate the deformation of complex solutions and demonstrate that in this case the deformation mechanism leads to discontinuties.

Squeezed coherent states for noncommutative spaces with minimal length uncertainty relations

We provide an explicit construction for Gazeau-Klauder coherent states related to non-Hermitian Hamiltonians with discrete bounded below and nondegenerate eigenspectrum. The underlying spacetime structure is taken to be of a noncommutative type with associated uncertainty relations implying minimal lengths. The uncertainty relations for the constructed states are shown to be saturated in a Hermitian as well as a non-Hermitian setting for a perturbed harmonic oscillator. The computed value of the Mandel parameter dictates that the coherent wavepackets are assembled according to sub-Poissonian statistics. Fractional revival times, indicating the superposition of classical-like sub-wave packets are clearly identified.

The two dimensional harmonic oscillator on a noncommutative space with minimal uncertainties

The two dimensional set of canonical relations giving rise to minimal uncertainties previously constructed from a q-deformed oscillator algebra is further investigated. We provide a representation for this algebra in terms of a flat noncommutative space and employ it to study the eigenvalue spectrum for the harmonic oscillator on this space. The perturbative expression for the eigenenergy indicates that the model might possess an exceptional point at which the spectrum becomes complex and its PT-symmetry is spontaneously broken.

Time-dependent q-deformed coherent states for generalized uncertainty relations

We investigate properties of generalized time-dependent q-deformed coherent states for a noncommutative harmonic oscillator. The states are shown to satisfy a generalized version of Heisenberg's uncertainty relations. For the initial value in time the states are demonstrated to be squeezed, i.e. the inequalities are saturated, whereas when time evolves the uncertainty product oscillates away from this value albeit still respecting the relations. For the canonical variables on a noncommutative space we verify explicitly that Ehrenfest's theorem hold at all times. We conjecture that the model exhibits revival times to infinite order. Explicit sample computations for the fractional revival times and superrevival times are presented.

Non-Hermitian multi-particle systems from complex root spaces

We provide a general construction procedure for antilinearly invariant complex root spaces. The proposed method is generic and may be applied to any Weyl group allowing to take any element of the group as a starting point for the construction. Worked out examples for several specific Weyl groups are presented, focusing especially on those cases for which no solutions were found previously. When applied in the defining relations of models based on root systems this usually leads to non-Hermitian models, which are nonetheless physically viable in a self-consistent sense as they are antilinearly invariant by construction. We discuss new types of Calogero models based on these complex roots. In addition we propose an alternative construction leading to q-deformed roots. We employ the latter type of roots to formulate a new version of affine Toda field theories based on non-simply laced roots systems. These models exhibit on the classical level a strong-weak duality in the coupling constant equivalent to a Lie algebraic duality, which is known for the quantum version of the undeformed case.

PT-symmetry breaking in complex nonlinear wave equations and their deformations

We investigate complex versions of the Korteweg-deVries equations and an Ito type nonlinear system with two coupled nonlinear fields. We systematically construct rational, trigonometric/hyperbolic, elliptic and soliton solutions for these models and focus in particular on physically feasible systems, that is those with real energies. The reality of the energy is usually attributed to different realisations of an antilinear symmetry, as for instance PT-symmetry. It is shown that the symmetry can be spontaneously broken in two alternative ways either by specific choices of the domain or by manipulating the parameters in the solutions of the model, thus leading to complex energies. Surprisingly the reality of the energies can be regained in some cases by a further breaking of the symmetry on the level of the Hamiltonian. In many examples some of the fixed points in the complex solution for the field undergo a Hopf bifurcation in the PT-symmetry breaking process. By employing several different variants of the symmetries we propose many classes of new invariant extensions of these models and study their properties. The reduction of some of these models yields complex quantum mechanical models previously studied.

Antilinear deformations of Coxeter groups, an application to Calogero models

We construct complex root spaces remaining invariant under antilinear involutions related to all Coxeter groups. We provide two alternative constructions: One is based on deformations of factors of the Coxeter element and the other based on the deformation of the longest element of the Coxeter group. Motivated by the fact that non-Hermitian Hamiltonians admitting an antilinear symmetry may be used to define consistent quantum mechanical systems with real discrete energy spectra, we subsequently employ our constructions to formulate deformations of Coxeter models remaining invariant under these extended Coxeter groups. We provide explicit and generic solutions for the Schroedinger equation of these models for the eigenenergies and corresponding wavefunctions. A new feature of these novel models is that when compared with the undeformed case their solutions are usually no longer singular for an exchange of an amount of particles less than the dimension of the representation space of the roots. The simultaneous scattering of all particles in the model leads to anyonic exchange factors for processes which have no analogue in the undeformed case.

Minimal areas from q-deformed oscillator algebras

We demonstrate that dynamical noncommutative space-time will give rise to deformed oscillator algebras. In turn, starting from some q-deformations of these algebras in a two dimensional space for which the entire deformed Fock space can be constructed explicitly, we derive the commutation relations for the dynamical variables in noncommutative space-time. We compute minimal areas resulting from these relations, i.e. finitely extended regions for which it is impossible to resolve any substructure in form of measurable knowledge. The size of the regions we find is determined by the noncommutative constant and the deformation parameter q. Any object in this type of space-time structure has to be of membrane type or in certain limits of string type.

PT invariant complex E(8) root spaces

We provide a construction procedure for complex root spaces invariant under antilinear transformations, which may be applied to any Coxeter group. The procedure is based on the factorisation of a chosen element of the Coxeter group into two factors. Each of the factors constitutes an involution and may therefore be deformed in an antilinear fashion. Having the importance of the E(8)-Coxeter group in mind, such as underlying a particular perturbation of the Ising model and the fact that for it no solution could be found previously, we exemplify the procedure for this particular case. As a concrete application of this construction we propose new generalisations of Calogero-Moser Sutherland models and affine Toda field theories based on the invariant complex root spaces and deformed complex simple roots, respectively.

Strings from position-dependent noncommutativity

We introduce a new set of noncommutative space-time commutation relations in two space dimensions. The space-space commutation relations are deformations of the standard flat noncommutative space-time relations taken here to have position dependent structure constants. Some of the new variables are non-Hermitian in the most natural choice. We construct their Hermitian counterparts by means of a Dyson map, which also serves to introduce a new metric operator. We propose PTlike symmetries, i.e.antilinear involutory maps, respected by these deformations. We compute minimal lengths and momenta arising in this space from generalized versions of Heisenberg's uncertainty relations and find that any object in this two dimensional space is string like, i.e.having a fundamental length in one direction beyond which a resolution is impossible. Subsequently we formulate and partly solve some simple models in these new variables, the free particle, its PT-symmetric deformations and the harmonic oscillator.

Compactons versus Solitons

We investigate whether the recently proposed PT-symmetric extensions of generalized Korteweg-de Vries equations admit genuine soliton solutions besides compacton solitary waves. For models which admit stable compactons having a width which is independent of their amplitude and those which possess unstable compacton solutions the Painleve test fails, such that no soliton solutions can be found. The Painleve test is passed for models allowing for compacton solutions whose width is determined by their amplitude. Consequently these models admit soliton solutions in addition to compactons and are integrable.

Minimal length in Quantum Mechanics and non-Hermitian Hamiltonian systems

Deformations of the canonical commutation relations lead to non-Hermitian momentum and position operators and therefore almost inevitably to non-Hermitian Hamiltonians. We demonstrate that such type of deformed quantum mechanical systems may be treated in a similar framework as quasi/pseudo and/or PT-symmetric systems, which have recently attracted much attention. For a newly proposed deformation of exponential type we compute the minimal uncertainty and minimal length, which are essential in almost all approaches to quantum gravity.

Particles versus fields in PT-symmetrically deformed integrable systems

We review some recent results on how PT-symmetry, that is a simultaneous time-reversal and parity transformation, can be used to construct new integrable models. Some complex valued multi-particle systems, such as deformations of the Calogero-Moser-Sutherland models, are shown to arise naturally from real valued field equations of non-linear integrable systems. Deformations of complex non-linear integrable field equations, some of them even allowing for compacton solutions, are also investigated. The integrabilty of various systems is established by means of the Painleve test

Non-Hermitian Hamiltonians with real eigenvalues coupled to electric fields: from the time-independent to the time dependent quantum mechanical formulation

We provide a reviewlike introduction into the quantum mechanical formalism related to non-Hermitian Hamiltonian systems with real eigenvalues. Starting with the time-independent framework we explain how to determine an appropriate domain of a non-Hermitian Hamiltonian and pay particular attention to the role played by PT-symmetry and pseudo-Hermiticity. We discuss the time-evolution of such systems having in particular the question in mind of how to couple consistently an electric field to pseudo-Hermitian Hamiltonians. We illustrate the general formalism with three explicit examples: i) the generalized Swanson Hamiltonians, which constitute non-Hermitian extensions of anharmonic oscillators, ii) the spiked harmonic oscillator, which exhibits explicit supersymmetry and iii) the -x^4-potential, which serves as a toy model for the quantum field theoretical phi^4-theory.

A note on the integrability of non-Hermitian extensions of Calogero-Moser-Sutherland models

We consider non-Hermitian but PT-symmetric extensions of Calogero models, which have been proposed by Basu-Mallick and Kundu for two types of Lie algebras. We address the question of whether these extensions are meaningful for all remaining Lie algebras (Coxeter groups) and if in addition one may extend the models beyond the rational case to trigonometric, hyperbolic and elliptic models. We find that all these new models remain integrable, albeit for the non-rational potentials one requires additional terms in the extension in order to compensate for the breaking of integrability.

G(2)-Calogero-Moser Lax operators from reduction

We construct a Lax operator for the $G_2$-Calogero-Moser model by means of a double reduction procedure. In the first reduction step we reduce the $A_6$-model to a $B_3$-model with the help of an embedding of the $B_3$-root system into the $A_6$-root system together with the specification of certain coupling constants. The $G_2$-Lax operator is obtained thereafter by means of an additional reduction by exploiting the embedding of the $G_2$-system into the $B_3$-system. The degree of algebraically independent and non-vanishing charges is found to be equal to the degrees of the corresponding Lie algebra.

Applications of quantum integrable systems

We present two applications of quantum integrable systems. First, we predict that it is possible to generate high harmonics from solid state devices by demostrating that the emission spectrum for a minimally coupled laser field of frequency $ω$ to an impurity system of a quantum wire, contains multiples of the incoming frequency. Second, evaluating expressions for the conductance in the high temperature regime we show that the caracteristic filling fractions of the Jain sequence, which occur in the fractional quantum Hall effect, can be obtained from quantum wires which are described by minimal affine Toda field theories.
