Projection constants for spaces of multivariate polynomials

The general problem we address is to develop new methods in the study of projection constants of Banach spaces of multivariate polynomials. The relative projection constant $\boldsymbolλ(X,Y)$ of a subspace $X$ of a Banach $Y$ is the smallest norm among all possible projections on $Y$ onto $X$, and the projection constant $\boldsymbolλ(X)$ is the supremum of all relative projection constants of $X$ taken with respect to all possible super spaces $Y$. This is one of the most significant notions of modern Banach space theory and has been intensively studied since the birth of abstract operator theory. We focus on projection constants of Banach spaces of multivariate polynomials formed either by trigonometric polynomials $f(g)=\sum_{γ\in E} \hat{f}(γ) γ(g)$ defined on a compact topological group $G$, which have Fourier coefficients $\hat{f}(γ)$ supported in a finite set $E$ of characters; or analytic polynomials $P(z)=\sum_{α\in J}c_α(P)\,z^α$, which are defined on a Banach space $X_n = (\mathbb{C}^n, \|\cdot\|)$ and have monomial coefficients $c_α(P)$ supported in a finite set $J \subset \mathbb{N}_0^n$ of multi indices. Depending on the underlying structure (of the group, Banach space or index set), the goal is to prove precise formulas or asymptotically optimal estimates. Our general setting is flexible enough to handle a wide variety of Banach spaces of polynomials, including analytic polynomials on polydiscs, Dirichlet polynomials on the complex plane, and polynomials on Boolean cubes $\{-1,+1\}^n$. Moreover, we get an explicit formula for the projection constant of the space of trace class operators. The methods developed here enable us to prove new estimates for important invariants such as the unconditional basis constant and the Gordon-Lewis constant for Banach spaces of multivariate polynomials.

Riesz summability on boundary lines of holomorphic functions generated by Dirichlet series

A particular consequence of the famous Carleson-Hunt theorem is that the Taylor series expansions of bounded holomorphic functions on the open unit disk converge almost everywhere on the boundary, whereas on single points the convergence may fail. In contrast, Bayart, Konyagin, and Queffélec constructed an example of an ordinary Dirichlet series $\sum a_n n^{-s}$, which on the open right half-plane $[Re >0]$ converges pointwise to a bounded, holomorphic function -- but diverges at each point of the imaginary line, although its limit function extends continuously to the closed right half plane. Inspired by a result of M.~Riesz, we study the boundary behavior of holomorphic functions $f$ on the right half-plane which for some $\ell \ge 0$ satisfy the growth condition $|f(s)| = O((1 + |s|)^\ell)$ and are generated by some Riesz germ, i.e., there is a frequency $λ= (λ_n)$ and a $λ$-Dirichlet series $\sum a_n e^{-λ_n s}$ such that on some open subset of $[Re >0]$ and for some $m \ge 0$ the function $f$ coincides with the pointwise limit (as $x \to \infty$) of so-called $(λ,m)$-Riesz means $\sum_{λ_n < x} a_n e^{-λ_n s}\big( 1-\frac{λ_n}{x}\big)^m ,\,x >0\,.$ Our main results present criteria for pointwise and uniform Riesz summability of such functions on the boundary line $[Re =0]$, which includes conditions that are motivated by classics like the Dini-test or the principle of localization.

Subgaussian Kahane-Salem-Zygmund inequalities in Banach spaces

The main aim of this work is to give a general approach to the celebrated Kahane-Salem-Zygmund inequalities. We prove estimates for exponential Orlicz norms of averages $\sup_{1\le j \leq N} \big |\sum_{1 \leq i \leq K}γ_i(\cdot) a_{i,j}\big|$ where $(a_{i,j})$ denotes a matrix of scalars and the $(γ_i)$ a sequence of real or complex subgaussian random variables. Lifting these inequalities to finite dimensional Banach spaces, we get novel Kahane-Salem-Zygmund type inequalities -- in particular, for spaces of subgaussian random polynomials and multilinear forms on finite dimensional Banach spaces as well as subgaussian random Dirichlet polynomials. Finally, we use abstract interpolation theory to widen our approach considerably.

Hardy spaces of vector-valued Dirichlet series

Given a Banach space $X$ and $1 \leq p \leq \infty$, it is well known that the two Hardy spaces $H_p(\mathbb{T},X)$ ($\mathbb{T}$ the torus) and $H_p(\mathbb{D},X)$ ($\mathbb{D}$ the disk) have to be distinguished carefully. This motivates us to define and study two different types of Hardy spaces $\mathcal{H}_p(X)$ and $\mathcal{H}^+_p(X)$ of Dirichlet series $\sum_n a_n n^{-s}$ with coefficients in $X$. We characterize them in terms of summing operators as well as holomorphic functions in infinitely many variables, and prove that they coincide whenever $X$ has the analytic Radon-Nikodým Property. Consequences are, among others, a vector-valued version of the Brother's Riesz Theorem in the infinite-dimensional torus, and an answer to the question when $\mathcal{H}_1(X^{\ast})$ is a dual space.

Monomial convergence for holomorphic functions on $\ell\_r$

Let $\mathcal F$ be either the set of all bounded holomorphic functions or the set of all $m$-homogeneous polynomials on the unit ball of $\ell\_r$. We give a systematic study of the sets of all $u\in\ell\_r$ for which the monomial expansion $\sum\_α\frac{\partial^αf(0)}{α!}u^α$ of every $f\in\mathcal F$ converges. Inspired by recent results from the general theory of Dirichlet series, we establish as our main tool, independently interesting, upper estimates for the unconditional basis constants of spaces of polynomials on $\ell\_r$ spanned by finite sets of monomials.

Non-symmetric polarization

Let $P$ be an $m$-homogeneous polynomial in $n$-complex variables $x_1, \dotsc, x_n$. Clearly, $P$ has a unique representation in the form \begin{equation*} P(x)= \sum_{1 \leq j_1 \leq \dotsc \leq j_m \leq n} c_{(j_1, \dotsc, j_m)} \, x_{j_1} \dotsb x_{j_m} \,, \end{equation*} and the $m$"~form \begin{equation*} L_P(x^{(1)}, \dotsc, x^{(m)})= \sum_{1 \leq j_1 \leq \dotsc \leq j_m \leq n} c_{(j_1, \dotsc, j_m)} \, x^{(1)}_{j_1} \dotsb x^{(m)}_{j_m} \end{equation*} satisfies $L_P(x,\dotsc, x) = P(x)$ for every $x\in\mathbb{C}^n$. We show that, although $L_P$ in general is non-symmetric, for a large class of reasonable norms $ \lVert \cdot \rVert $ on $\mathbb{C}^n$ the norm of $L_P$ on $(\mathbb{C}^n, \lVert \cdot \rVert )^m$ up to a logarithmic term $(c \log n)^{m^2}$ can be estimated by the norm of $P$ on $ (\mathbb{C}^n, \lVert \cdot \rVert )$; here $c \ge 1$ denotes a universal constant. Moreover, for the $\ell_p$"~norms $ \lVert \cdot \rVert_p$, $1 \leq p < 2$ the logarithmic term in the number $n$ of variables is even superfluous.

Optimal comparison of $P$-norms of Dirichlet Polynomials

Let $1 \leq p < q < \infty$. We show that \[ \sup{\frac{\left\| D\right\|_{\mathcal{H}_{q}}}{\left\| D\right\|_{\mathcal{H}_{p}}}} = \exp{\left( \frac{\log{x}}{\log{\log{x}}} \left(\log{\sqrt{\frac{q}{p}}} + \left(\frac{\log{\log{\log{x}}}}{\log{\log{x}}}\right)\right) \right)} \,,\] where the supremum is taken over all non-zero Dirichlet polynomials of the form $D(s)=\sum_{n \leq x}{a_{n} n^{-s}}$. An aplication is given to the study of multipliers between Hardy spaces of Dirichlet series.

$L^p$-norms and Mahler's measure of polynomials on the $n$-dimensional torus

We prove Nikol'skii type inequalities which for polynomials on the $n$-dimensional torus $\mathbb{T}^n$ relate the $L^p$-with the $L^q$-norm (with respect to the normalized Lebesgue measure and $0 <p <q < \infty$). Among other things we show that $C=\sqrt{q/p}$ is the best constant such that $\|P\|_{L^q}\leq C^{\text{deg}(P)} \|P\|_{L^p}$ for all homogeneous polynomials $P$ on $\mathbb{T}^n$. We also prove an exact inequality between the $L^p$-norm of a polynomial $P$ on $\mathbb{T}^n$ and its Mahler measure $M(P)$, which is the geometric mean of $|P|$ with respect to the normalized Lebesgue measure on $\mathbb{T}^n$. Using extrapolation we transfer this estimate into a Khintchine-Kahane type inequality, which, for polynomials on $\mathbb{T}^n$, relates a certain exponential Orlicz norm and Mahler's measure. Applications are given, including some interpolation estimates.

Bohnenblust-Hille inequalities for Lorentz spaces via interpolation

We prove that the Lorentz sequence space $\ell_{\frac{2m}{m+1},1}$ is, in a~precise sense, optimal among all symmetric Banach sequence spaces satisfying a Bohnenblust-Hille type inequality for $m$-linear forms or $m$-homogeneous polynomials on $\mathbb{C}^n$. Motivated by this result we develop methods for dealing with subtle Bohnenblust-Hille type inequalities in the setting of Lorentz spaces. Based on an interpolation approach and the Blei-Fournier inequalities involving mixed type spaces, we prove multilinear and polynomial Bohnenblust-Hille type inequalities in Lorentz spaces with subpolynomial and subexponential constants. Improving a remarkable result of Balasubramanian-Calado-Queffélec, we show an application to the theory of Dirichlet series.

Almost sure-sign convergence of Hardy-type Dirichlet series

Hartman proved in 1939 that the width of the largest possible strip in the complex plane, on which a Dirichlet series $\sum_n a_n n^{-s}$ is uniformly a.s.-sign convergent (i.e., $\sum_n \varepsilon_n a_n n^{-s}$ converges uniformly for almost all sequences of signs $\varepsilon_n =\pm 1$) but does not convergent absolutely, equals $1/2$. We study this result from a more modern point of view within the framework of so called Hardy-type Dirichlet series with values in a Banach space.

Monomial expansions of $H_{p}$--functions in infinitely many variables

Each bounded holomorphic function on the infinite dimensional polydisk $\mathbb{D}^\infty$, $f \in H_\infty(\mathbb{D}^\infty)$, defines a formal monomial series expansion that in general does not converge to $f$. The set $\mon H_\infty(\mathbb{D}^\infty)$ contains all $ z $'s in which the monomial series expansion of each function $f \in H_\infty(\mathbb{D}^\infty)$ sums up to $f(z)$. Bohr, Bohnenblust and Hille, showed that it contains $\ell_{2} \cap \mathbb{D}^\infty$, but does not contain any of the slices $\ell_{2+\varepsilon} \cap \mathbb{D}^\infty$. This was done in the context of Dirichlet series and our article is very much inspired by recent deep developments in this direction. Our main contribution shows that $z \in \mon H_\infty(\mathbb{D}^\infty)$ whenever $\bar{\lim} \big(\frac{1}{\log n} \sum_{j=1}^{n} z^{* 2}_{j} \big)^{1/2} < 1/\sqrt{2}$, and conversely $\bar{\lim} \big(\frac{1}{\log n} \sum_{j=1}^{n} z^{* 2}_{j} \big)^{1/2} \leq 1$ for each $z \in \mon H_\infty(\mathbb{D}^\infty)$. The Banach space $H_\infty(\mathbb{D}^\infty)$ can be identified with the Hardy space $H_\infty(\mathbb{T}^\infty)$; this motivates a study of sets of monomial convergence of $H_p$-functions on $\mathbb{T}^\infty$ (consisting of all $z$'s in $\mathbb{D}^{\infty}$ for which the series $\sum \hat{f}(α) z^α$ converges). We show that $\mon H_\infty(\mathbb{T}^\infty) = \mon H_\infty(\mathbb{D}^\infty)$ and $\mon H_{p}(\mathbb{T}^\infty) = \ell_{2} \cap \mathbb{D}^\infty$ for $1 \leq p < \infty$ and give a representation of $H_{p}(\mathbb{T}^\infty)$ in terms of holomorphic functions on $\mathbb{D}^{\infty}$. This links our circle of ideas with well-known results due to Cole and Gamelin.

The Bohnenblust--Hille inequality for homogeneous polynomials is hypercontractive

The Bohnenblust--Hille inequality says that the $\ell^{\frac{2m}{m+1}}$-norm of the coefficients of an $m$-homogeneous polynomial $P$ on $\C^n$ is bounded by $\| P\|_\infty$ times a constant independent of $n$, where $\|\cdot \|_\infty$ denotes the supremum norm on the polydisc $\D^n$. The main result of this paper is that this inequality is hypercontractive, i.e., the constant can be taken to be $C^m$ for some $C>1$. Combining this improved version of the Bohnenblust--Hille inequality with other results, we obtain the following: The Bohr radius for the polydisc $\D^n$ behaves asymptotically as $\sqrt{(\log n)/n}$ modulo a factor bounded away from 0 and infinity, and the Sidon constant for the set of frequencies $\bigl\{\log n: n \text{a positive integer} \le N\bigr\}$ is $\sqrt{N}\exp\{(-1/\sqrt{2}+o(1))\sqrt{\log N\log\log N}\}$ as $N\to \infty$.

Variants of the Maurey-Rosenthal theorem for quasi K"othe function spaces

The Maurey-Rosenthal theorem states that each bounded and linear operator T from a quasi normed space E into some L_p(ν) which satisfies a certain vector-valued inequality even allows a weighted norm inequality. Continuing the work of Garcia Cuerva and Rubio de Francia we give several scalar and vector-valued variants of this fundamental result within the framework of quasi K"othe function spaces over measure spaces.
