Twisted Blanchfield pairings and twisted signatures II: Relation to Casson-Gordon invariants

This paper studies twisted signature invariants and twisted linking forms, with a view towards obstructions to knot concordance. Given a knot $K$ and a representation $ρ$ of the knot group, we define a twisted signature function $σ_{K,ρ} \colon S^1 \to \mathbb{Z}$. This invariant satisfies many of the same algebraic properties as the classical Levine-Tristram signature $σ_K$. When the representation is abelian, $σ_{K,ρ}$ recovers $σ_K$, while for appropriate metabelian representations, $σ_{K,ρ}$ is closely related to the Casson-Gordon invariants. Additionally, we prove satellite formulas for $σ_{K,ρ}$ and for twisted Blanchfield forms.

Khovanov homotopy type, periodic links and localizations

Given an $m$-periodic link $L\subset S^3$, we show that the Khovanov spectrum $\mathcal{X}_L$ constructed by Lipshitz and Sarkar admits a homology group action. We relate the Borel cohomology of $\mathcal{X}_L$ to the equivariant Khovanov homology of $L$ constructed by the second author. The action of Steenrod algebra on the cohomology of $\mathcal{X}_L$ gives an extra structure of the periodic link. Another consequence of our construction is an alternative proof of the localization formula for Khovanov homology, obtained first by Stoffregen and Zhang. By applying Dwyer-Wilkerson theorem we express Khovanov homology of the quotient link in terms of equivariant Khovanov homology of the original link.

Tiling the integer lattice with translated sublattices

When $\mathbb{Z}^d$ is represented as a finite disjoint union of translated integer sublattices, the translated sublattices must possess some special properties. Such a representation is called a \emph{lattice tiling}. We develop a theoretical framework, based on multiple residues and dual groups, to provide a set of necessary and sufficient conditions for such a lattice tiling to exist. We also investigate the question of when a lattice tiling must possess at least two translated sublattices which are translates of one another.

Rational cuspidal curves in projective surfaces. Topological versus algebraic obstructions

We study rational cuspidal curves in projective surfaces. We specify two criteria obstructing possible configurations of singular points that may occur on such curves. One criterion generalizes the result of Fernandez de Bobadilla, Luengo, Melle--Hernandez and Nemethi and is based on the Bezout theorem. The other one is a generalization of the result obtained by Livingston and the author and relies on Ozsvath--Szabo inequalities for $d$-invariants in Heegaard Floer homology. We show by means of explicit calculations that the two approaches give very similar obstructions.

The Upsilon function of L-space knots is a Legendre transform

Given an L-space knot we show that its Upsilon function is the Legendre transform of a counting function equivalent to the d-invariants of its large surgeries. The unknotting obstruction obtained for the Upsilon function is, in the case of L-space knots, contained in the d-invariants of large surgeries. Generalizations apply for connected sums of L-space knots, which imply that the slice obstruction provided by Upsilon on the subgroup of concordance generated by L-space knots is no finer than that provided by the d-invariants.

Blanchfield forms and Gordian distance

Given a link in $S^3$ we will use invariants derived from the Alexander module and the Blanchfield pairing to obtain lower bounds on the Gordian distance between links, the unlinking number and various splitting numbers. These lower bounds generalise results recently obtained by Kawauchi. We give an application restricting the knot types which can arise from a sequence of splitting operations on a link. This allows us to answer a question asked by Colin Adams in 1996.

Morse theory for manifolds with boundary

We develop Morse theory for manifolds with boundary. Besides standard and expected facts like the handle cancellation theorem and the Morse lemma for manifolds with boundary, we prove that, under a topological assumption, a critical point in the interior of a Morse function can be moved to the boundary, where it splits into a pair of boundary critical points. As an application, we prove that every cobordism of manifolds with boundary splits as a union of left product cobordisms and right product cobordisms.

Semigroups, d-invariants and deformations of cuspidal singular points of plane curves

We apply Heegaard Floer homology to study deformations of singularities of plane algebraic curves. Our main result provides an obstruction to the existence of a deformation between two singularities. Generalizations include the case of multiple singularities. The obstruction is formulated in terms of a semicontinuity property for semigroups associated to the singularities.

Topological obstructions for rational cuspidal curves in Hirzebruch surfaces

We study rational cuspidal curves in Hirzebruch surfaces. We provide two obstructions for the existence of rational cuspidal curves in Hirzebruch surfaces with prescribed types of singular points. The first result comes from Heegaard--Floer theory and is a generalization of a result by Livingston and the first author. The second criterion is obtained by comparing the spectrum of a suitably defined link at infinity of a curve with spectra of its singular points.

Embedded Morse theory and relative splitting of cobordisms of manifolds

We prove that an embedded cobordism between manifolds with boundary can be split into a sequence of right product and left product cobordisms, if the codimension of the embedding is at least two. This is a topological counterpart of the algebraic splitting theorem for embedded cobordisms of the first author, A. Nemethi and A. Ranicki. In the codimension one case, we provide a slightly weaker statement. We also give proofs of rearrangement and cancellation theorems for handles of embedded submanifolds with boundary.

Heegaard Floer homology and rational cuspidal curves

We apply the methods of Heegaard Floer homology to identify topological properties of complex curves in the complex projective plane. As one application, we resolve an open conjecture that constrains the Alexander polynomial of the link of the singular point of the curve in the case that there is exactly one singular point, having connected link, and the curve is of genus 0. Generalizations apply in the case of multiple singular points.

On the algebraic unknotting number

The algebraic unknotting number u_a(K) of a knot K was introduced by Hitoshi Murakami. It equals the minimal number of crossing changes needed to turn K into an Alexander polynomial one knot. In a previous paper the authors used the Blanchfield form of a knot K to define an invariant n(K) and proved that n(K) is a lower bound on u_a(K). They also showed that n(K) subsumes all previous classical lower bounds on the (algebraic) unknotting number. In this paper we prove that n(K)=u_a(K).

The Hodge spectrum of analytic germs on isolated surface singularities

We use topological methods to prove a semicontinuity property of the Hodge spectra for analytic germs defined on an isolated surface singularity. For this we introduce an analogue of the Seifert matrix (the fractured Seifert matrix), and of the Levine--Tristram signatures associated with it, defined for null-homologous links in arbitrary three dimensional manifolds. Moreover, we establish Murasugi type inequalities in the presence of cobordisms of links. It turns out that the fractured Seifert matrix determines the Hodge spectrum and the Murasugi type inequalities can be read as spectrum semicontinuity inequalities.

The unknotting number and classical invariants I

Given a knot K we introduce a new invariant coming from the Blanchfield pairing and we show that it gives a lower bound on the unknotting number of K. This lower bound subsumes the lower bounds given by the Levine-Tristram signatures, by the Nakanishi index and it also subsumes the Lickorish obstruction to the unknotting number being equal to one. Our approach in particular allows us to show for 25 knots with up to 12 crossings that their unknotting number is at least three, most of which are very difficult to treat otherwise.

Heegaard Floer homologies for (+1) surgeries on torus knots

We compute the Heegaard Floer homology of $S^3_1(K)$ (the (+1) surgery on the torus knot $T_{p,q}$) in terms of the semigroup generated by $p$ and $q$, and we find a compact formula (involving Dedekind sums) for the corresponding Ozsvath--Szabo d-invariant. We relate the result to known knot invariants of $T_{p,q}$ as the genus and the Levine--Tristram signatures. Furthermore, we emphasize the striking resemblance between Heegaard Floer homologies of (+1) and (-1) surgeries on torus knots. This relation is best seen at the level of $τ$ functions.

Hodge-type structures as link invariants

Based on some analogies with the Hodge theory of isolated hypersurface singularities, we define Hodge-type numerical invariants (called H-numbers) of any, not necessarily algebraic, link in $S^3$. They contain the same information as the (normalized) real Seifert matrix. We study their basic properties, we express the Tristram-Levine signatures and the higher order Alexander polynomial in terms of them. Motivated by singularity theory, we also introduce the spectrum of the link (determined from these H-numbers), and we establish some semicontinuity properties for it.

Morse theory for plane algebraic curves

We use Morse theoretical arguments to study algebraic curves in C^2. We take an algebraic curve C in C^2 and intersect it with a family of spheres with fixed origin and varying radii. We explain in detail how does the resulting link change when we cross a singular point of C. Applying link invariants as Murasugi's signature and Levine--Tristram signatures we obtain some informations about possible singularities of a curve C in terms of its topology.

Spectrum of plane curves via knot theory

We use topological methods to study various semicontinuity properties of spectra of singular points of plane algebraic curves and of polynomials in two variables at infinity. Using Seifert forms and the Tristram--Levine signatures of links, we reprove (in a slightly weaker version) a result obtained by Steenbrink and Varchenko on semicontinuity of spectrum at infinity. We also relate the spectrum at infinity of a polynomial with spectra of singular points of a chosen fiber.
