Efficient Network Analysis Under Single Link Deletion

The problem of worst case edge deletion from a network is considered. Suppose that you have a communication network and you can delete a single edge. Which edge deletion causes the largest disruption? More formally, given a graph, which edge after deletion disconnects the maximum number of pairs of vertices, where ties for number of pairs disconnected are broken by finding an edge that increases the average shortest path length the maximum amount. This problem is interesting both practically and theoretically. We call it the \emph{single edge deletion problem}. Our contributions include formally defining the single edge deletion problem and providing motivations from network analysis. Also, we give an algorithm that solves the problem much faster than a naive solution. The algorithm incorporates sophisticated and novel techniques, and generalises to the problem of computing the all-pairs shortest paths table after deleting each edge individually. This means the algorithm has deep theoretical interest as well as the potential for even wider applications than those we present here.

Evaluating BERT-based Pre-training Language Models for Detecting Misinformation

It is challenging to control the quality of online information due to the lack of supervision over all the information posted online. Manual checking is almost impossible given the vast number of posts made on online media and how quickly they spread. Therefore, there is a need for automated rumour detection techniques to limit the adverse effects of spreading misinformation. Previous studies mainly focused on finding and extracting the significant features of text data. However, extracting features is time-consuming and not a highly effective process. This study proposes the BERT- based pre-trained language models to encode text data into vectors and utilise neural network models to classify these vectors to detect misinformation. Furthermore, different language models (LM) ' performance with different trainable parameters was compared. The proposed technique is tested on different short and long text datasets. The result of the proposed technique has been compared with the state-of-the-art techniques on the same datasets. The results show that the proposed technique performs better than the state-of-the-art techniques. We also tested the proposed technique by combining the datasets. The results demonstrated that the large data training and testing size considerably improves the technique's performance.

Wavelet-Based Multi-Class Seizure Type Classification System

Epilepsy is one of the most common brain diseases that affect more than 1\% of the world's population. It is characterized by recurrent seizures, which come in different types and are treated differently. Electroencephalography (EEG) is commonly used in medical services to diagnose seizures and their types. The accurate identification of seizures helps to provide optimal treatment and accurate information to the patient. However, the manual diagnostic procedures of epileptic seizures are laborious and highly-specialized. Moreover, EEG manual evaluation is a process known to have a low inter-rater agreement among experts. This paper presents a novel automatic technique that involves extraction of specific features from EEG signals using Dual-tree Complex Wavelet Transform (DTCWT) and classifying them. We evaluated the proposed technique on TUH EEG Seizure Corpus (TUSZ) ver.1.5.2 dataset and compared the performance with existing state-of-the-art techniques using overall F1-score due to class imbalance seizure types. Our proposed technique achieved the best results of weighted F1-score of 99.1\% and 74.7\% for seizure-wise and patient-wise classification respectively, thereby setting new benchmark results for this dataset.

Lepton flavor violating Higgs boson decay $h\toμτ$ at the ILC

We study the possible reach of the proposed International Linear Collider (ILC) in exploring the lepton flavor violating (LFV) Higgs boson decay $h\toμτ$. Two generic types of models are investigated, both involving an extended scalar sector. For the first type, the rest of the scalars are heavy and beyond the reach of ILC but the LFV decay occurs through a tiny admixture of the Standard Model (SM) doublet with the heavy degrees of freedom. In the second class, which is more constrained from the existing data, the SM Higgs boson does not have any LFV decay but there are other scalars degenerate with it that gives rise to the LFV signal. We show that ILC can pin down the branching fraction of $h\toμτ$, and hence the effective LFV Yukawa coupling, to a very small value, due to the fact that there are signal channels with unlike flavor leptons but no missing energy. It turns out that the low-energy options of the ILC, namely, $\sqrt{s}=250$ or 500 GeV are better to investigate such channels, and the option of beam polarization helps too. At least an order of magnitude improvement is envisaged over the existing limits.

New Limits on Heavier Electroweakinos and their LHC Signatures

We investigate the heavier electroweakino sectors in several versions of the MSSM, which has not been explored so far in the light of the LHC data, and obtain new bounds using the ATLAS Run I constraints in the $3l + {E\!\!\!\!/_T}$ channel. We also venture beyond the trilepton events and predict several novel multilepton + ${E\!\!\!\!/_T}$ signatures of these electroweakinos which may show up before the next shutdown of the LHC.

Gluino mass limits with sbottom NLSP in coannihilation scenarios

In view of the recent interest in the pMSSM with light third generation squarks, we consider a hitherto neglected scenario where the lighter bottom squark ($\widetilde{b}_1$) is the next lightest supersymmetric particle (NLSP) which co-annihilates with the lightest supersymmetric particle (LSP), the dark matter (DM) candidate. Since the co-annihilation cross section receives contributions from both electroweak and strong vertices, it is relatively large. As a result relatively large NLSP-LSP mass difference (25 - 35 GeV) is consistent with the PLANCK data. This facilitates the LHC signatures of this scenario. We consider several variants of the sbottom NLSP scenario with and without light stops and delineate the parameter space allowed by the PLANCK data. We point out several novel signal (e.g., $\widetilde{t}_1 \rightarrow \widetilde{b}_1 W$) which are not viable in the stop NLSP scenario of DM production. Finally, we consider gluino ($\widetilde g$) decays in this scenario and using the current ATLAS data in the jets (with or without b-tagging) + $\not \!\! E_T$ channel, obtain new limits in the $m_{\widetilde{b}_1} - m_{\widetilde g}$ mass plane. We find that for $m_{\widetilde{b}_1}$ upto 500 GeV, $m_{\widetilde g} \geq$ 1.1 - 1.2 TeV in this scenario.

Reduced LHC constraints for higgsino-like heavier electroweakinos

As a sequel to our earlier work on wino-dominated $\tilde χ_1^{\pm}$ and $\tilde χ_2^{0}$ (wino models), we focus on the pMSSM models where $\tilde χ_1^{\pm}$ and $\tilde χ_{2,3}^{0}$ are either higgsino dominated (higgsino models) or admixtures of significant amount of higgsino and wino components (mixed models), with or without light sleptons. The LHC constraints in the trilepton channel are significantly weaker even in the presence of light sleptons, especially in the higgsino models, compared to those mostly studied by the LHC collaborations with wino-dominated $\tilde χ_1^{\pm}$ and $\tilde χ_2^{0}$. The modes $\tilde χ_{2,3}^{0}\rightarrow h~\tildeχ_1^{0}$ with large branching ratios (BRs) are more common in the higgsino models and may produce spectacular signal in the LHC Run-II. In a variety of higgsino and mixed models we have delineated the allowed parameter space due to the LHC constraints, the observed Dark Matter (DM) relic density of the universe, which gets contributions from many novel DM producing mechanisms i.e., the annihilation/coannihilation processes that lead to the correct range of relic density, and the precise measurement of the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon. In the higgsino models many new DM producing mechanisms, which are not allowed in the wino models, open up. We have also explored the prospects of direct and indirect detection of DM in the context of the LUX and IceCube experiments respectively. In an extended model having only light gluinos in addition to the electroweak sparticles, the gluinos decay into final states with multiple taggable b-jets with very large BRs. As a consequence, the existing ATLAS data in the $0l$ + jets (3b) + $E\!\!\!\!/_T$ channel provide the best limit on $m_{\tilde g}$ ($\approx$ 1.3 TeV). Several novel signatures of higgsino models for LHC Run-II and ILC have been identified.

LHC signatures of neutrino mass generation through R-parity violation

We consider a model of neutrino mass based on R-parity violating (RPV) supersymmetry, with three $μ_i$, relevant for bilinear RPV terms, and three $λ'_{ijk}$, relevant for the trilinear terms. The present neutrino data, after a precise determination of the mixing angle $θ_{13}$, severely constrain such models. We make a thorough study of one such class of models that may have interesting signatures at the upgraded LHC. In this class of models, the relevant trilinear couplings are of the form $λ'_{i33}$, so if the lighter stop squark $\tilde{t}_1$ is the lightest supersymmetric particle (LSP), it will decay only through these couplings, giving rise to events with isolated hard leptons and jets. Even when $\tilde{t}_1$ is the next-to-LSP (NLSP), it can decay via the tiny $λ'$ couplings allowed by the neutrino data, although it may face stiff competition from some R-parity conserving decay modes. Using a simple Pythia based simulation, we find that in both the cases the signal consisting of a pair of oppositely charged leptons ($ee$, $μμ$ or $e μ$) plus jets may be observable at the upgraded LHC experiments for a reasonable range of the $\tilde{t}_1$ mass.

The Electroweak Sector of the pMSSM in the Light of LHC - 8 TeV and Other Data

Using the chargino-neutralino and slepton search results from the LHC in conjunction with the WMAP/PLANCK and $(g-2)_μ$ data, we constrain several generic pMSSM models with decoupled strongly interacting sparticles, heavier Higgs bosons and characterized by different hierarchies among the EW sparticles. We find that some of them are already under pressure and this number increases if bounds from direct detection experiments like LUX are taken into account, keeping in mind the associated uncertainties. The XENON1T experiment is likely to scrutinize the remaining models closely. Analysing models with heavy squarks, a light gluino along with widely different EW sectors, we show that the limits on gluino mass are not likely to be below 1.1 TeV, if a multichannel analysis of the LHC data is performed. Using this light gluino scenario we further illustrate that in future LHC experiments the models with different EW sectors can be distinguished from each other by the relative sizes of the $n$-leptons + $m$-jets + ${\mbox{${E\!\!\!\!/_T}$}}$ signals for different choices of $n$.

Neutralino dark matter confronted by the LHC constraints on Electroweak SUSY signals

The supersymmetric particles (sparticles) belonging exclusively to the electroweak sector of the minimal supersymmetric standard model (MSSM) may hold the key to the observed dark matter relic density in the universe even if all strongly interacting sparticles are very heavy. The importance of the light EW sparticles in DM physics and in producing spectacular collider signals is emphasized. It is shown that even the preliminary data on the direct searches of these sparticles at the LHC, significantly constrain the parameter space of the MSSM compatible with the observed relic density and provide useful hints about the future search prospects. If in addition to the electroweak sparticles the gluinos are also within the reach of the LHC experiments, then the gluino mass limits in the light slepton scenario obtained via the canonical jets + $\met$ channel may be relaxed by as much as 25 $%$ compared to the existing limits. But the corresponding same sign dilepton (SSD) + jets + $\met$ signal will yield enhanced limits competitive with the strongest limits currently available. This is illustrated with the help of benchmark scenarios at the generator level using PYTHIA. If the gluinos are just beyond the current reach of the LHC, then the generic n-lepton + m-jets + missing energy signal may discriminate between different DM producing mechanisms by comparing the signals corresponding to different values of n. This is illustrated by simulating the signals for n = 0 and n = 2 (the SSD signal).

New limits on top squark NLSP from ATLAS 4.7 $fb^{-1}$ data

Using the ATLAS 4.7 $fb^{-1}$ data on new physics search in the jets + $\met$ channel, we obtain new limits on the lighter top squark ($\tilde t_1$) considering all its decay modes assuming that it is the next to lightest supersymmetric particle (NLSP). If the decay $\lstop$ $\ra c \lspone$ dominates and the production of dark matter relic density is due to NLSP - LSP co-annihilation then the lower limit on $\mlstop $ is 240 GeV. The limit changes to 200 GeV if the decay $\lstop$ $\ra b W \lspone$ dominates. Combining these results it follows that $\lstop $ NLSP induced baryogenesis is now constrained more tightly.

Enriching the exploration of the mUED model with event shape variables at the CERN LHC

We propose a new search strategy based on the event shape variables for new physics models where the separations among the masses of the particles in the spectrum are small. Collider signature of these models, characterised by low $p_T$ leptons/jets and low missing $p_T$, are known to be difficult to look for. The conventional search strategies involving hard cuts may not work in such situations. As a case study, we have investigated the hitherto neglected jets + missing $E_T$ signature -known to be a challenging one - arising from the pair productions and decay of $n =1$ KK-excitations of gluons and quarks in the minimal Universal Extra Dimension (mUED) model. Judicious use of the event shape variables, enables us to reduce the Standard Model backgrounds to a negligible level . We have shown that in mUED, $R^{-1}$ upto $850 ~\rm GeV$, can be explored or ruled out with 12 fb$^{-1}$ of integrated luminosity at the 7 TeV run of the LHC. We also discuss the prospects of employing these variables for searching other beyond standard model physics with compressed or partially compressed spectra.

Low mass neutralino dark matter in mSUGRA and more general models in the light of LHC data

The $bτj \etslash$ signal at the ongoing LHC experiments is simulated with Pythia in the mSUGRA and other models of SUSY breaking. Special attention is given on the compatibility of this signature with the low mass neutralino dark matter (LMNDM) scenario consistent with WMAP data. In the mSUGRA model the above signal as well as the LMNDM scenario are strongly disfavoured due to the constraints from the on going SUSY searches at the LHC. This tension, however, originates from the model dependent correlations among the parameters in the strong and electroweak sectors of mSUGRA. That there is no serious conflict between the LMNDM scenario and the LHC data is demonstrated by constructing generic phenomenological models such that the strong sector is unconstrained or mildly constrained by the existing LHC data and parameters in the electroweak sector, unrelated to the strong sector, yield DM relic density consistent with the WMAP data. The proposed models, fairly insensitive to the conventional SUSY searches in the jets + $\etslash$ and other channels, yield observable signal in the suggested channel for $\lum \gsim 1 \ifb$ of data. They are also consistent with the LMNDM scenario and can be tested by the direct dark matter search experiments in the near future. Some of these models can be realized by non-universal scalar and gaugino masses at the GUT scale.

Revealing the footprints of squark gluino production through Higgs search experiments at the Large Hadron Collider at 7 TeV and 14 TeV

The invariant mass distribution of the di-photons from the decay of the lighter scalar Higgs boson(h) to be carefully measured by dedicated h search experiments at the LHC may be distorted by the di-photons associated with the squark-gluino events with much larger cross sections in Gauge Mediated Supersymmetry Breaking (GMSB) models. This distortion if observed by the experiments at the Large Hadron Collider at 7 TeV or 14 TeV, would disfavour not only the standard model but various two Higgs doublet models with comparable h - masses and couplings but without a sector consisting of new heavy particles decaying into photons. The minimal GMSB (mGMSB) model constrained by the mass bound on h from LEP and that on the lightest neutralino from the Tevatron, produce negligible effects. But in the currently popular general GMSB(GGMSB) models the tail of the above distribution may show statistically significant excess of events even in the early stages of the LHC experiments with integrated luminosity insufficient for the discovery of h. We illustrate the above points by introducing several benchmark points in various GMSB models - minimal as well as non-minimal. The same conclusion follows from a detailed parameter scan in a simplified GGMSB model recently employed by the CMS collaboration to interpret their searches in the di-photon + $\etslash$ channel. Other observables like the effective mass distribution of the di-photon + X events may also reveal the presence of new heavy particles beyond the Higgs sector. The contamination of the h mass peak and simple remedies are also discussed.

SUSY signals with small and large trilinear couplings at the LHC 7 TeV runs and neutralino dark matter

We propose the signal $1b+1l+N_j+\etslash$ along with appropriate selection criteria for the LHC 7 TeV run, where the number of jets $(N_j)$ is $\ge$ 2 or 4. These signals can complement the canonical $Jets + \etslash$ signature since they are sensitive to the trilinear soft breaking parameter $(A_0)$ and low values of the parameter tan$β$ in the minimal supergravity (mSUGRA) model. A large region of this mSUGRA parameter space within the reach of the ongoing experiments at the LHC is disfavoured by the bound on the lightest Higgs boson mass ($m_h \ge 114.4 $ GeV) unless $A_0$ has moderate to large negative values. Interestingly this parameter space with $A_0 \ne 0$ is also consistent with the observed dark matter relic density. A natural consequence of large $A_0$ is the existence of a light top squark ($\lstop$). The proposed signals primarily stem from direct $\lstop \lstop^*$ production and/or $\tilde g \ra \tilde t_{1} t $, if all squark-gluino events are considered. A thorough analysis of the signals and the corresponding backgrounds are presented using the event generator Pythia. We finally compare the signal size for $A_0 = 0$ and $A_0 \ne 0$.

Application of Graphics Processing Units to Search Pipeline for Gravitational Waves from Coalescing Binaries of Compact Objects

We report a novel application of graphics processing units (GPUs) for the purpose of accelerating the search pipelines for gravitational waves from coalescing binaries of compact objects. A speed-up of 16 fold has been achieved compared with a single central processing unit (CPU). We show that substantial improvements are possible and discuss the reduction in CPU count required for the detection of inspiral sources afforded by the use of GPUs.

SUSY darkmatter at the LHC - 7 TeV

We have analysed the early LHC signatures of the minimal supergravity (mSUGRA) model. Our emphasis is on the 7 - $TeV$ run corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $\sim 1.0 ~fb^{-1}$ although we have also discussed briefly the prospects at LHC-10 $TeV$. We focus on the parameter space yielding relatively light squark and gluinos consistent with the darkmatter relic density data and the LEP bounds on the lightest Higgs scalar mass. This parameter space is only allowed for non-vanishing trilinear soft breaking term $A_0$. A significant region of the parameter space with large to moderate negative values of $A_0$ consistent with the stability of the scalar potential and relic density production via neutralino annihilation and/or neutralino - stau coannihilation yields observable signal via the jets + missing transverse energy channel. The one lepton + jets + missing energy signal is also viable over a smaller but non-trivial parameter space. The ratio of the size of the two signals - free from theoretical uncertainties - may distinguish between different relic density generating mechanisms. With efficient $τ$-tagging facilities at 7 $TeV$ the discriminating power may increase significantly. We also comment on other dark matter relic density allowed mSUGRA scenarios and variants there of in the context of LHC-7 $TeV$.

The interplay between the charged Higgs and squark-gluino events at the LHC

In some extensions of the standard model with extended Higgs sectors, events from new particle production may pass the selection criteria for Higgs search in different channels at the LHC - 14 TeV and mimic Higgs signals. This intriguing possibility is illustrated by PYTHIA based simulations using several representative points in the parameter space of the minimal supersymmetric standard model (MSSM) including a point in the minimal supergravity model consistent with the Dark matter (DM) relic density data. Our simulations explore the interplay between the charged Higgs signal and typical squark-gluino events. We argue that the standard selections like the one based on the polarization properties of the $τ$'s from charged Higgs decay, though adequate for handling the SM background, may not be very efficient in the presence of SUSY backgrounds. We then propose an alternative search strategy based on pure kinematics which sufficiently controls both the SM and the MSSM backgrounds. For charged Higgs masses ($H^{\pm}$) in the deep decoupling regime (600 GeV $\lsim m_{H^{\pm}} \lsim$ 800 GeV) this method works well and extends the LHC reach close to 800 GeV for an integrated luminosity of 30 $fb^{-1}$ with or without the SUSY background. For a lighter charged Higgs a judicious combination of the old selections and some of the cuts proposed by us may disentangle the Higgs signal from the squark-gluino backgrounds quite effectively.

Top squark and neutralino decays in a R-parity violating model constrained by neutrino oscillation data

In a R-parity violating (RPV) model of neutrino mass with three bilinear couplings $μ_i$ and three trilinear couplings $λ'_{i33}$, where $i$ is the lepton index, we find six generic scenarios each with a distinctive pattern of the trilinear couplings consistent with the oscillation data. These patterns may be reflected in direct RPV decays of the lighter top squark or in the RPV decays of the lightest superparticle, assumed to be the lightest neutralino. Typical signal sizes at the Tevatron RUN II and the LHC have been estimated and the results turn out to be encouraging.

LEP Data and the Stability of the Potential Confront the mSUGRA Model

The requirement that the supersymmetric scalar potential be stable in the minimal supergravity (mSUGRA) model imposes an upper bound on the universal gaugino mass $m_{1/2}$ as function of the common scalar mass $m_0$. Combining this with the experimental lower bound on $m_{1/2}$ from LEP data, we find a new lower bound on $m_0$, stronger than the one that comes from experimental data alone. If the corresponding upper and lower limits on the superparticle masses, presented in this letter, are found to be violated at Tevatron Run II or at the LHC, it would imply that we are living on a false vacuum. Special attention has been paid in estimating the uncertainties in these predictions due to the choice of the renormalization scale. The implications of our limits for the constraints obtained by indirect methods(SUSY dark matter, g - 2 of the muon, $ b \to s γ$....) are briefly discussed.

Are light sneutrinos buried in LEP data?

Supersymmetry may resolve the disagreement between the precision electroweak data and the direct limit on the higgs mass, if there are light sneutrinos in the mass range 55 GeV $ < m_{\snu} < $ 80 GeV. Such sneutrinos should decay invisibly with 100% branching ratio and contribute to the $γ$ + missing energy signal, investigated by all the LEP groups. It is shown that while the data accumulated by a single group may not be adequate to reveal such sneutrinos, a combined analysis of the data collected by all four groups will be sensitive to $m_{\snu}$ in the above range. If no signal is found a lower bound on $m_{\snu}$ stronger than that obtained from the $Z$-pole data may emerge.

Does CPT violation affect the B_d meson life times and decay asymmetries?

We study indirect CPT violating effects in B_d meson decays and mixing, taking into account the recent constraints on the CPT violating parameters from the Belle collaboration. The life time difference of the B_d meson mass eigenstates, expected to be negligible in the standard model and many of its CPT conserving extensions, could be sizeable (\sim a few percent of the total width) due to breakdown of this fundamental symmetry. The time evolution of the direct CP violating asymmetries in one amplitude dominated processes (inclusive semileptonic B_d decays, in particular) turn out to be particularly sensitive to this effect.

preprint2001arXiv

Can R-parity violation lower $\sin 2β$?

Recent time-dependent CP asymmetry measurements in the $B_d \to J/ψK_S$ channel by the BaBar and Belle Collaborations yield somewhat lower values of $\sin 2β$ compared to the one obtained from the standard model fit. If the inconsistency between these numbers persists with more statistics, this will signal new physics contaminating the $B_d \to J/ψK_S$ channel, thus disturbing the extraction of $β$. We show that the R-parity-violating interactions in supersymmetric theories can provide extra new phases which play a role in significantly reducing the above CP asymmetry, thus explaining why BaBar and Belle report lower values of $\sin 2β$. The same couplings also affect the $B_d \to ϕK_S$ decay rate and asymmetry, explain the $B \to η' K$ anomaly, and predict nonzero CP asymmetry in dominant $B_s$ decays. The scenario will be tested in the ongoing and upcoming B factories.

Effects of SO(10) D-Terms on SUSY Signals at the Tevatron

We study signals for the production of superparticles at the Tevatron in supergravity scenarios based on the Grand Unified group SO(10). The breaking of this group introduces extra contributions to the masses of all scalars, described by a single new parameter. We find that varying this parameter can considerably change the size of various expected signals studied in the literature, with different numbers of jets and/or charged leptons in the final state. The ratios of these signal can thus serve as a diagnostic to detect or constrain deviations from the much--studied scenario where all scalar masses are universal at the GUT scale. Moreover, under favorable circumstances some of these signals, and/or new signals involving hard $b-$jets, should be observable at the next run of the Tevatron collider even if the average scalar mass lies well above the gluino mass.

Virtual LSPs at e+ e- Colliders

Currently popular search strategies for supersymmetric particles may be significantly affected due to relatively light sneutrinos which decay dominantly into invisible channels. In certain cases the second lightest neutralino may also decay invisibly leading to two extra carriers of missing energy (in addition to the lightest supersymmetric particle (LSP)) -- the virtual LSPs (VLSPs). It is shown that if the sneutrino masses happen to be in the small but experimentally allowed range ~ 45 - 55 GeV, these particles together with neutralino pairs may contribute significantly to the missing energy in the process e+ e- ---> γ+ missing energy at LEP-2 energies as an enhancement over the Standard Model or the conventional MSSM predictions. It is further shown that a much larger region of the parameter space can be scanned at a high luminosity e+ e- collider at 500 GeV like the proposed NLC machine. Moreover this process can play a complementary role to direct chargino searches at LEP-2 and NLC which may fail due to a near mass degeneracy of the chargino and the sneutrino. Formulae for the cross sections taking into account full mixings of the charginos and the neutralinos are derived. The signal remains observable even in the context of more restricted models based on N=1 SUGRA with common scalar and gaugino masses. The effect of soft photon brehmsstrahlung on the signal is also discussed briefly.

Flavour Democracy Calls for the Fourth Generation

It is argued with the help of an illustrative model, that the inter--species hierarchy among the fermion masses and the quark mixing angles can be accommodated naturally in the standard model with (approximate) flavor democracy provided there are four families of sequential quark--leptons with all members of the fourth family having roughly equal masses. The special problem of light neutrino masses (if any) and possible solutions are also discussed.
