Localization and delocalization in networks with varied connectivity

We study the phenomenon of localization and delocalization in a circuit-QED network with connectivity varying from finite-range to all-to-all coupling. We find a fascinating interplay between interactions and connectivity. In particular, we consider (i) Harmonic (ii) Jaynes-Cummings and (iii) Bose-Hubbard networks. We start with the initial condition where one of the nodes in the network is populated and then let it evolve in time. The time dynamics and steady state characterize the features of localization (self-trapping) in these large-scale networks. For the case of Harmonic networks, exact analytical results are obtained and we demonstrate that all-to-all connection shows self-trapping whereas the finite-ranged connectivity shows delocalization. The interacting cases (Jaynes-Cummings, Bose-Hubbard networks) are investigated both via exact quantum dynamics and semi-classical approach. We obtain an interesting phase diagram when one varies the range of connectivity and the strength of the interaction. We investigate the consequence of imperfections in the cavity/qubit and the role of inevitable disorder. Our results are relevant especially given recent experimental progress in engineering systems with long-range connectivity.

Interaction-induced instability and chaos in the photoassociative stimulated Raman adiabatic passage from atomic to molecular Bose-Einstein condensates

We study the effect of interactions on the conversion of atomic -to molecular Bose-Einstein condensates via stimulated Raman adiabatic passage. Both energetic instability during avoided crossings and dynamical instability during chaotic intervals limit adiabaticity and impose {\em low} sweep-rate boundaries on the efficiency of the process. For the diabatic traverse of avoided crossings, we find a reciprocal power-law dependence of the final unconverted population on sweep rate. For the traverse of chaos, we find a sharp low-rate boundary determined by the dynamical instability parameters. The interplay of these two mechanisms determines which instability controls the failure of molecular production. A judicious choice of sweep parameters is hence required to restore the process efficiency.

Engineering indefinitely long-lived localization in cavity-QED arrays

By exploiting the nonlinear nature of the Jaynes Cumming's interaction, one can get photon population trapping in cavity-QED arrays. However, the unavoidable dissipative effects in a realistic system would destroy the self-trapped state by continuous photon leakage. To circumvent this issue, we show that a careful engineering of drive, dissipation and Hamiltonian results in achieving indefinitely sustained self-trapping. We show that the intricate interplay between drive, dissipation, and light-matter interaction results in requiring an optimal window of drive strengths in order to achieve such non-trivial steady states. We treat the two-cavity and four-cavity cases using exact open quantum many-body calculations. Additionally, in the semiclassical limit we scale up the system to a long 1-D chain and demonstrate localization de-localization transition in a driven-dissipative system. Although, our analysis is performed keeping cavity-QED systems in mind, our work is applicable to other driven-dissipative systems where nonlinearity plays a defining role.

Polaron dynamics and decoherence in an interacting two-spin system coupled to optical phonon environment

We study two anisotropically interacting spins coupled to optical phonons; we restrict our analysis to the regime of strong coupling to the environment, to the antiadiabatic region, and to the subspace with zero value for $S^z_T$ (the z-component of the total spin). In the case where each spin is coupled to a different phonon bath, we assume that the system and the environment are initially uncorrelated (and form a simply separable state) in the polaronic frame of reference. By analyzing the {polaron} dynamics through non-Markovian quantum master equation, we find that the system manifests a small amount of decoherence that decreases both with increasing non-adiabaticity and with enhancing strength of coupling; whereas, under the Markovian approximation, the polaronic system exhibits a decoherence free behavior. For the situation where both spins are coupled to the same phonon bath, we also show that the system is decoherence free in the subspace where $S^z_T$ is fixed. To suppress decoherence through quantum control, we employ a train of pi pulses and demonstrate that unitary evolution of the system can be retained. We propose realization of a weakly decohering charge qubit from an electron in an oxide-based (tunnel-coupled) double quantum dot system.
