Generalized Uncertainty Principle as a Consequence of the Effective Field Theory

We will demonstrate that the generalized uncertainty principle exists because of the derivative expansion in the effective field theories. This is because, in the framework of the effective field theories, the minimum measurable length scale has to be integrated away to obtain the low energy effective action. We will analyze the deformation of a massive free scalar field theory by the generalized uncertainty principle, and demonstrate that the minimum measurable length scale corresponds to a second more massive scale in the theory, which has been integrated away. We will also analyze CFT operators dual to this deformed scalar field theory, and observe that scaling of the new CFT operators indicates that they are dual to this more massive scale in the theory. We will use holographic renormalization to explicitly calculate the renormalized boundary action with counterterms for this scalar field theory deformed by the generalized uncertainty principle and show that the generalized uncertainty principle contributes to the matter conformal anomaly.

Two-dimensional conformal field theories with matrix-valued level

We introduce a new class of two dimensional conformal field theories by extending Wess-Zumino-Witten (WZW) models to chiral algebras with matrix-valued levels. The new CFTs are based on holomorphic currents with an operator product expansion characterized by a positive integer-valued matrix $K_{AB}$. We use the Sugawara construction to compute the energy-momentum tensor, the central charge, and the spectrum of conformal dimensions of the CFTs based on this algebra. We also construct a set of genus-$1$ characters and show that they fulfil a representation of the modular group $\text{SL}(2,\mathbb{Z})$ up to a modular anomaly.

AdS/CFT Correspondence Beyond its Supergravity Approximation

We will study the AdS/CFT correspondence in an intermediate region between the strong form of this correspondence (string theory on AdS being dual to a boundary CFT), and the weak form of this correspondence (supergravity on AdS being dual to a boundary CFT). We will go beyond the supergravity approximation in the AdS by using the fact that strings have an extended structure. We will also calculate the CFT dual to such string corrections in the bulk, and demonstrate that they are consistent with the strong form of the AdS/CFT correspondence. So, even though the conformal dimensions of both the relevant and the irrelevant operators will receive string corrections, the conformal dimension of marginal operators will not receive any such corrections.

Aspects of moduli stabilization in type IIB string theory

We review moduli stabilization in type IIB string theory compactification with fluxes. We focus on the KKLT and Large Volume Scenario (LVS). We show that the predicted soft SUSY breaking terms in KKLT model are not phenomenological viable. In LVS, the following result for scalar mass, gaugino mass, and trilinear term is obtained: $m_0 =m_{1/2}= - A_0=m_{3/2}$, which may account for Higgs mass limit if $m_{3/2} \sim {\cal O}(1.5)$ TeV. However, in this case the relic abundance of the lightest neutralino can not be consistent with the measured limits. We also study the cosmological consequences of moduli stabilization in both models. In particular, the associated inflation models such as racetrack inflation and Kähler inflation are analyzed. Finally the problem of moduli destabilization and the effect of string moduli backreaction on the inflation models are discussed.

Rational conformal field theory with matrix level and strings on a torus

Study of the matrix-level affine algebra $U_{m,K}$ is motivated by conformal field theory and the fractional quantum Hall effect. Gannon completed the classification of $U_{m,K}$ modular-invariant partition functions. Here we connect the algebra $U_{2,K}$ to strings on 2-tori describable by rational conformal field theories. As Gukov and Vafa proved, rationality selects the complex-multiplication tori. We point out that the rational conformal field theories describing strings on complex-multiplication tori have characters and partition functions identical to those of the matrix-level algebra $U_{m,K}$. This connection makes obvious that the rational theories are dense in the moduli space of strings on $T^m$, and may prove useful in other ways.

Energy functionals for Calabi-Yau metrics

We identify a set of "energy" functionals on the space of metrics in a given Kaehler class on a Calabi-Yau manifold, which are bounded below and minimized uniquely on the Ricci-flat metric in that class. Using these functionals, we recast the problem of numerically solving the Einstein equation as an optimization problem. We apply this strategy, using the "algebraic" metrics (metrics for which the Kaehler potential is given in terms of a polynomial in the projective coordinates), to the Fermat quartic and to a one-parameter family of quintics that includes the Fermat and conifold quintics. We show that this method yields approximations to the Ricci-flat metric that are exponentially accurate in the degree of the polynomial (except at the conifold point, where the convergence is polynomial), and therefore orders of magnitude more accurate than the balanced metrics, previously studied as approximations to the Ricci-flat metric. The method is relatively fast and easy to implement. On the theoretical side, we also show that the functionals can be used to give a heuristic proof of Yau's theorem.
