On tangential weak defectiveness and identifiability of projective varieties

A point $p\in\mathbb{P}^N$ of a projective space is $h$-identifiable, with respect to a variety $X\subset\mathbb{P}^N$, if it can be written as linear combination of $h$ elements of $X$ in a unique way. Identifiability is implied by conditions on the contact locus in $X$ of general linear spaces called non weak defectiveness and non tangential weak defectiveness. We give conditions ensuring non tangential weak defectiveness of an irreducible and non-degenerated projective variety $X\subset\mathbb{P}^N$, and we apply these results to Segre-Veronese varieties.

Quartic and Quintic hypersurfaces with dense rational points

Let $X_4\subset\mathbb{P}^{n+1}$ be a quartic hypersurface of dimension $n\geq 4$ over an infinite field $k$. We show that if either $X_4$ contains a linear subspace $Λ$ of dimension $h\geq \max\{2,\dim(Λ\cap \text{Sing}(X_4))-2\}$ or has double points along a linear subspace of dimension $h\geq 3$, a smooth $k$-rational point and is otherwise general, then $X_4$ is unirational over $k$. This improves previous results by A. Predonzan and J. Harris, B. Mazur, R. Pandharipande for quartics. We also provide a density result for the $k$-rational points of quartic $3$-folds with a double plane over a number field, and several unirationality results for quintic hypersurfaces over a $C_r$ field.

On the birational geometry of spaces of complete forms I: collineations and quadrics

Moduli spaces of complete collineations are wonderful compactifications of spaces of linear maps of maximal rank between two fixed vector spaces. We investigate the birational geometry of moduli spaces of complete collineations and quadrics from the point of view of Mori theory. We compute their effective, nef and movable cones, the generators of their Cox rings, and their groups of pseudo-automorphisms. Furthermore, we give a complete description of both the Mori chamber and stable base locus decompositions of the effective cone of the space of complete collineations of the 3-dimensional projective space.

Non-Secant Defectivity via Osculating Projections

We introduce a method to produce bounds for the non secant defectivity of an arbitrary irreducible projective variety, once we know how its osculating spaces behave in families and when the linear projections from them are generically finite. Then we analyze the relative dimension of osculating projections of Grassmannians, and as an application of our techniques we prove that asymptotically the Grassmannian $\mathbb{G}(r,n)$, parametrizing $r$-planes in $\mathbb{P}^n$, is not $h$-defective for $h\leq (\frac{n+1}{r+1})^{\lfloor\log_2(r)\rfloor}$. This bound improves the previous one $h\leq \frac{n-r}{3}+1$, due to H. Abo, G. Ottaviani and C. Peterson, for any $r\geq 4$.

On the automorphisms of Hassett's moduli spaces

Let $\overline{\mathcal{M}}_{g,A[n]}$ be the moduli stack parametrizing weighted stable curves, and let $\overline{M}_{g,A[n]}$ be its coarse moduli space. These spaces have been introduced by B. Hassett, as compactifications of $\mathcal{M}_{g,n}$ and $M_{g,n}$ respectively, by assigning rational weights $A = (a_{1},...,a_{n})$, $0< a_{i} \leq 1$ to the markings. In particular, the classical Deligne-Mumford compactification arises for $a_1 = ... = a_n = 1$. In genus zero some of these spaces appear as intermediate steps of the blow-up construction of $\overline{M}_{0,n}$ developed by M. Kapranov, while in higher genus they may be related to the LMMP on $\overline{M}_{g,n}$. We compute the automorphism groups of most of the Hassett's spaces appearing in the Kapranov's blow-up construction. Furthermore, if $g\geq 1$ we compute the automorphism groups of all Hassett's spaces. In particular, we prove that if $g\geq 1$ and $2g-2+n\geq 3$ then the automorphism groups of both $\overline{\mathcal{M}}_{g,A[n]}$ and $\overline{M}_{g,A[n]}$ are isomorphic to a subgroup of $S_{n}$ whose elements are permutations preserving the weight data in a suitable sense.

On the rigidity of moduli of curves in arbitrary characteristic

The stack $\overline{\mathcal{M}}_{g,n}$ of stable curves and its coarse moduli space $\overline{M}_{g,n}$ are defined over $\mathbb{Z}$, and therefore over any field. Over an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero, Hacking showed that $\overline{\mathcal{M}}_{g,n}$ is rigid (a conjecture of Kapranov). Bruno and Mella for $g=0$, and the second author for $g\geq 1$ showed that its automorphism group is the symmetric group $S_n$, permuting marked points unless $(g,n)\in\{(0,4),(1,1),(1,2)\}$. The methods used in the papers above do not extend to positive characteristic. We show that in characteristic $p>0$, the rigidity of $\overline{\mathcal{M}}_{g,n}$, with the same exceptions as over $\mathbb{C}$, implies that its automorphism group is $S_n$. We prove that, over any perfect field, $\overline{M}_{0,n}$ is rigid and deduce that, over any field, $Aut(\overline{M}_{0,n})\cong S_{n}$ for $n\geq 5$. Going back to characteristic zero, we prove that for $g+n>4$, the coarse moduli space $\overline M_{g,n}$ is rigid, extending a result of Hacking who had proven it has no locally trivial deformations. Finally, we show that $\overline{M}_{1,2}$ is not rigid, although it does not admit locally trivial deformations, by explicitly computing his Kuranishi family.

Generalized varieties of sums of powers

Let $X\subset\mathbb{P}^{N}$ be an irreducible, non-degenerate variety. The generalized variety of sums of powers $VSP_H^X(h)$ of $X$ is the closure in the Hilbert scheme $Hilb_{h}(X)$ of the locus parametrizing collections of points $\{x_{1},...,x_{h}\}$ such that the $(h-1)$-plane $\left\langle x_{1},...,x_{h}\right\rangle$ passes trough a fixed general point $p\in\mathbb{P}^{N}$. When $X = V_{d}^{n}$ is a Veronese variety we recover the classical variety of sums of powers $VSP(F,h)$ parametrizing additive decompositions of a homogeneous polynomial as powers of linear forms. In this paper we study the birational behavior of $VSP_H^X(h)$. In particular we will show how some birational properties, such as rationality, unirationality and rational connectedness, of $VSP_H^X(h)$ are inherited from the birational geometry of variety $X$ itself.

On the automorphisms of moduli spaces of curves

In the last years the biregular automorphisms of the Deligne-Mumford's and Hassett's compactifications of the moduli space of n-pointed genus g smooth curves have been extensively studied by A. Bruno and the authors. In this paper we give a survey of these recent results and extend our techniques to some moduli spaces appearing as intermediate steps of the Kapranov's and Keel's realizations of $\bar{M}_{0,n}$, and to the degenerations of Hassett's spaces obtained by allowing zero weights.

On the rank of $n\times n$ matrix multiplication

For every $p\leq n$ positive integer we obtain the lower bound $(3-\frac{1}{p+1})n^2-\big(2\binom{2p}{p+1}-\binom{2p-2}{p-1}+2\big)n$ for the rank of the $n\times n$ matrix multiplication. This bound improves the previous one $(3-\frac{1}{p+1})n^2-\big(1+2p\binom{2p}{p}\big)n$ due to Landsberg. Furthermore our bound improves the classic bound $\frac{5}{2}n^2-3n$, due to Bläser, for every $n\geq 132$. Finally, for $p = 2$, with a sligtly different strategy we menage to obtain the lower bound $\frac{8}{3}n^2-7n$ which improves Bläser's bound for any $n\geq 24$.

Covered by Lines and Conic Connected Varieties

We study some properties of an embedded variety covered by lines and give a numerical criterion ensuring the existence of a singular conic through two of its general points. We show that our criterion is sharp. Conic-connected, covered by lines, QEL, LQEL, prime Fano, defective, and dual defective varieties are closely related. We study some relations between the above mentioned classes of objects using celebrated results by Ein and Zak.

Birational aspects of the Geometry of Varieties of Sum of Powers

Varieties of Sums of Powers describe the additive decompositions of an homogeneous polynomial into powers of linear forms. Despite their long history, going back to Sylvester and Hilbert, few of them are known for special degrees and number of variables. In this paper we aim to understand a general birational behaviour of VSP, if any. To do this we birationally embed these varieties into Grassmannians and prove the rationality, unirationality or rational connectedness of many of those in arbitrary degrees and number of variables.
