Birational geometry of rational quartic surfaces

Two birational subvarieties of P^n are called Cremona equivalent if there is a Cremona modification of P^n mapping one to the other. If the codimension of the varieties is at least 2 then they are always Cremona Equivalent. For divisors the question is much more subtle and a general answer is unknown. In this paper I study the case of rational quartic surfaces and prove that they are all Cremona equivalent to a plane.

Tangential weak defectiveness and generic identifiability

We investigate the uniqueness of decomposition of general tensors $T\in {\mathbb C}^{n_1+1}\otimes\cdots\otimes{\mathbb C}^{n_r+1}$ as a sum of tensors of rank $1$. This is done extending the theory developed in a previous paper by the second author to the framework of non twd varieties. In this way we are able to prove the non generic identifiability of infinitely many partially symmetric tensors.

Quadratic families of elliptic curves and unirationality of degree 1 conic bundles

We consider elliptic curves whose coefficients are degree 2 polynomials in a variable t. We prove that for infinitely many values of t the resulting elliptic curve has rank at least 1. All such curves together form an algebraic surface which is birational to a conic bundle with 7 singular fibers. The main step of the proof is to show that such conic bundles are unirational. V.2: Main theorem is corrected for small finite fields.

On the automorphisms of Hassett's moduli spaces

Let $\overline{\mathcal{M}}_{g,A[n]}$ be the moduli stack parametrizing weighted stable curves, and let $\overline{M}_{g,A[n]}$ be its coarse moduli space. These spaces have been introduced by B. Hassett, as compactifications of $\mathcal{M}_{g,n}$ and $M_{g,n}$ respectively, by assigning rational weights $A = (a_{1},...,a_{n})$, $0< a_{i} \leq 1$ to the markings. In particular, the classical Deligne-Mumford compactification arises for $a_1 = ... = a_n = 1$. In genus zero some of these spaces appear as intermediate steps of the blow-up construction of $\overline{M}_{0,n}$ developed by M. Kapranov, while in higher genus they may be related to the LMMP on $\overline{M}_{g,n}$. We compute the automorphism groups of most of the Hassett's spaces appearing in the Kapranov's blow-up construction. Furthermore, if $g\geq 1$ we compute the automorphism groups of all Hassett's spaces. In particular, we prove that if $g\geq 1$ and $2g-2+n\geq 3$ then the automorphism groups of both $\overline{\mathcal{M}}_{g,A[n]}$ and $\overline{M}_{g,A[n]}$ are isomorphic to a subgroup of $S_{n}$ whose elements are permutations preserving the weight data in a suitable sense.

Cremona linearizations of some classical varieties

In this paper we present an effective method for linearizing rational varieties of codimension at least two under Cremona transformations, starting from a given parametrization. Using these linearizing Cremonas, we simplify the equations of secant and tangential varieties of some classical examples, including Veronese, Segre and Grassmann varieties. We end the paper by treating the special case of the Segre embedding of the n-fold product of projective spaces, where cumulant Cremonas, arising from algebraic statistics, appear as specific cases of our general construction.

Equivalent Birational Embeddings III: cones

Two divisors in $\mathbb P^n$ are said to be Cremona equivalent if there is a Cremona modification sending one to the other. In this paper I study irreducible cones in $\mathbb P^n$ and prove that two cones are Cremona equivalent if their general hyperplane sections are birational. In particular I produce examples of cones in $\mathbb P^3$ Cremona equivalent to a plane whose plane section is not Cremona equivalent to a line in $\mathbb P^2$.

On the automorphisms of moduli spaces of curves

In the last years the biregular automorphisms of the Deligne-Mumford's and Hassett's compactifications of the moduli space of n-pointed genus g smooth curves have been extensively studied by A. Bruno and the authors. In this paper we give a survey of these recent results and extend our techniques to some moduli spaces appearing as intermediate steps of the Kapranov's and Keel's realizations of $\bar{M}_{0,n}$, and to the degenerations of Hassett's spaces obtained by allowing zero weights.

One example of general unidentifiable tensors

The identifiability of parameters in a probabilistic model is a crucial notion in statistical inference. We prove that a general tensor of rank 8 in C^3\otimes C^6\otimes C^6 has at least 6 decompositions as sum of simple tensors, so it is not 8-identifiable. This is the highest known example of balanced tensors of dimension 3, which are not k-identifiable, when k is smaller than the generic rank.

On some fibrations of $\overline{M}_{0,n}$

The paper is a second step in the study of $\overline{M}_{0,n}$ started in arXiv:1006.0987 [math.AG]. We study fiber type morphisms of this moduli space via Kapranov's beautiful description. Our final goal is to understand if any dominant morphism $f: \overline{M}_{0,n} \to X$ with positive dimensional fibers factors through forgetful morphisms. We prove that this is true if either $n \leq 7$ or $\rm {dim} X \leq 2$ or the rational map induced on $P^{n-3}$ has linear general fibers. Along the way we give examples of forgetful morphisms whose fibers are connected curves of arbitrarily high positive genus, for $n>>0$.

Birational aspects of the Geometry of Varieties of Sum of Powers

Varieties of Sums of Powers describe the additive decompositions of an homogeneous polynomial into powers of linear forms. Despite their long history, going back to Sylvester and Hilbert, few of them are known for special degrees and number of variables. In this paper we aim to understand a general birational behaviour of VSP, if any. To do this we birationally embed these varieties into Grassmannians and prove the rationality, unirationality or rational connectedness of many of those in arbitrary degrees and number of variables.
