An optimal multiplier theorem for Grushin operators in the plane, II

In a previous work we proved a spectral multiplier theorem of Mihlin--Hörmander type for two-dimensional Grushin operators $-\partial_x^2 - V(x) \partial_y^2$, where $V$ is a doubling single-well potential, yielding the surprising result that the optimal smoothness requirement on the multiplier is independent of $V$. Here we refine this result, by replacing the $L^\infty$ Sobolev condition on the multiplier with a sharper $L^2$ condition. As a consequence, we obtain the sharp range of $L^1$ boundedness for the associated Bochner--Riesz means. The key new ingredient of the proof is a precise pointwise estimate in the transition region for eigenfunctions of one-dimensional Schrödinger operators with doubling single-well potentials.

Maximal characterisation of local Hardy spaces on locally doubling manifolds

We prove a radial maximal function characterisation of the local atomic Hardy space h^1(M) on a Riemannian manifold M with positive injectivity radius and Ricci curvature bounded from below. As a consequence, we show that an integrable function belongs to h^1(M) if and only if either its local heat maximal function or its local Poisson maximal function are integrable. A key ingredient is a decomposition of Hölder cut-offs in terms of an appropriate class of approximations of the identity, which we obtain on arbitrary Ahlfors-regular metric measure spaces and generalises a previous result of A. Uchiyama.

A family of Hardy type spaces on nondoubling manifolds

We introduce a decreasing one-parameter family $\mathfrak{X}^γ(M)$, $γ>0$, of Banach subspaces of the Hardy-Goldberg space $\mathfrak{h}^1(M)$ on certain nondoubling Riemannian manifolds with bounded geometry and we investigate their properties. In particular, we prove that $\mathfrak{X}^{1/2}(M)$ agrees with the space of all functions in $\mathfrak{h}^1(M)$ whose Riesz transform is in $L^1(M)$, and we obtain the surprising result that this space does not admit an atomic decomposition.

Quaternionic spherical harmonics and a sharp multiplier theorem on quaternionic spheres

A sharp $L^p$ spectral multiplier theorem of Mihlin--Hörmander type is proved for a distinguished sub-Laplacian on quaternionic spheres. This is the first such result on compact sub-Riemannian manifolds where the horizontal space has corank greater than one. The proof hinges on the analysis of the quaternionic spherical harmonic decomposition, of which we present an elementary derivation.

Spectral multipliers on $2$-step groups: topological versus homogeneous dimension

Let $G$ be a $2$-step stratified group of topological dimension $d$ and homogeneous dimension $Q$. Let $L$ be a homogeneous sub-Laplacian on $G$. By a theorem due to Christ and to Mauceri and Meda, an operator of the form $F(L)$ is of weak type $(1,1)$ and bounded on $L^p(G)$ for all $p \in (1,\infty)$ whenever the multiplier $F$ satisfies a scale-invariant smoothness condition of order $s > Q/2$. It is known that, for several $2$-step groups and sub-Laplacians, the threshold $Q/2$ in the smoothness condition is not sharp and in many cases it is possible to push it down to $d/2$. Here we show that, for all $2$-step groups and sub-Laplacians, the sharp threshold is strictly less than $Q/2$, but not less than $d/2$.

Spectral multiplier theorems of Euclidean type on new classes of 2-step stratified groups

From a theorem of Christ and Mauceri and Meda it follows that, for a homogeneous sublaplacian $L$ on a $2$-step stratified group $G$ with Lie algebra $\mathfrak{g}$, an operator of the form $F(L)$ is of weak type $(1,1)$ and bounded on $L^p(G)$ for $1 < p < \infty$ if the spectral multiplier $F$ satisfies a scale-invariant smoothness condition of order $s > Q/2$, where $Q = \dim \mathfrak{g} + \dim[\mathfrak{g},\mathfrak{g}]$ is the homogeneous dimension of $G$. Here we show that the condition can be pushed down to $s > d/2$, where $d = \dim \mathfrak{g}$ is the topological dimension of $G$, provided that $d \leq 7$ or $\dim [\mathfrak{g},\mathfrak{g}] \leq 2$.

A sharp multiplier theorem for Grushin operators in arbitrary dimensions

In a recent work by A. Martini and A. Sikora (arXiv:1204.1159), sharp L^p spectral multiplier theorems for the Grushin operators acting on $R^{d_1} \times R^{d_2}$ are obtained in the case $d_1 \geq d_2$. Here we complete the picture by proving sharp results in the case $d_1 < d_2$. Our approach exploits L^2 weighted estimates with "extra weights" depending only on the second factor of $R^{d_1} \times R^{d_2}$ (in contrast with the mentioned work, where the "extra weights" depend on the first factor) and gives a new unified proof of the sharp results without restrictions on the dimensions.

Spectral multipliers on Heisenberg-Reiter and related groups

Let $L$ be a homogeneous sublaplacian on a 2-step stratified Lie group $G$ of topological dimension $d$ and homogeneous dimension $Q$. By a theorem due to Christ and to Mauceri and Meda, an operator of the form $F(L)$ is bounded on $L^p$ for $1 < p < \infty$ if $F$ satisfies a scale-invariant smoothness condition of order $s > Q/2$. Under suitable assumptions on $G$ and $L$, here we show that a smoothness condition of order $s > d/2$ is sufficient. This extends to a larger class of 2-step groups the results for the Heisenberg and related groups by Müller and Stein and by Hebisch, and for the free group $N_{3,2}$ by Müller and the author.

Weighted Plancherel estimates and sharp spectral multipliers for the Grushin operators

We study the Grushin operators acting on $\R^{d_1}_{x'}\times \R^{d_2}_{x"}$ and defined by the formula \[ L=-\sum_{\jone=1}^{d_1}\partial_{x'_\jone}^2 - (\sum_{\jone=1}^{d_1}|x'_\jone|^2) \sum_{\jtwo=1}^{d_2}\partial_{x"_\jtwo}^2. \] We obtain weighted Plancherel estimates for the considered operators. As a consequence we prove $L^p$ spectral multiplier results and Bochner-Riesz summability for the Grushin operators. These multiplier results are sharp if $d_1 \ge d_2$. We discuss also an interesting phenomenon for weighted Plancherel estimates for $d_1 <d_2$. The described spectral multiplier theorem is the analogue of the result for the sublaplacian on the Heisenberg group obtained by D. Müller and E.M. Stein and by W. Hebisch.

Algebras of differential operators on Lie groups and spectral multipliers

This thesis is devoted to the study of joint spectral multipliers for a system of pairwise commuting, self-adjoint left-invariant differential operators L_1,...,L_n on a connected Lie group G. Under the assumption that the algebra generated by L_1,...,L_n contains a weighted subcoercive operator - a notion due to ter Elst and Robinson (J. Funct. Anal., 157(1):88--163, 1998), including positive elliptic operators, sublaplacians and Rockland operators - we prove that L_1,...,L_n are (essentially) self-adjoint and strongly commuting on L^2(G). Moreover, we perform an abstract study of such a system of operators, in connection with the algebraic structure and the representation theory of G, similarly as what is done in the literature for the algebras of differential operators associated with Gelfand pairs. When G has polynomial volume growth, weighted L^1 estimates are obtained for the convolution kernel of the operator m(L_1,...,L_n) corresponding to a compactly supported multiplier m satisfying some smoothness condition. The order of smoothness which we require on m is related to the degree of polynomial growth of G. In the case G is a homogeneous Lie group and L_1,...,L_n are homogeneous operators, an L^p multiplier theorem of Mihlin-Hörmander type is proved, extending known results for a single Rockland operator. Further, a product theory is developed, by considering several homogeneous groups G_j, each of which with its own system of operators, and a multiplier theorem of Marcinkiewicz type is proved, not only on the direct product of the G_j, but also on other (possibly non-homogeneous) groups, containing homomorphic images of the G_j. Consequently, for certain non-nilpotent groups of polynomial growth and for some distinguished sublaplacians, we are able to improve the general result of Alexopoulos (Proc. Amer. Math. Soc., 120(3):973-979, 1994).

Analysis of joint spectral multipliers on Lie groups of polynomial growth

We study the problem of L^p-boundedness (1 < p < \infty) of operators of the form m(L_1,...,L_n) for a commuting system of self-adjoint left-invariant differential operators L_1,...,L_n on a Lie group G of polynomial growth, which generate an algebra containing a weighted subcoercive operator. In particular, when G is a homogeneous group and L_1,...,L_n are homogeneous, we prove analogues of the Mihlin-Hörmander and Marcinkiewicz multiplier theorems.

Spectral theory for commutative algebras of differential operators on Lie groups

The joint spectral theory of a system of pairwise commuting self-adjoint left-invariant differential operators L_1,...,L_n on a connected Lie group G is studied, under the hypothesis that the algebra generated by them contains a "weighted subcoercive operator" of ter Elst and Robinson (J. Funct. Anal. 157 (1998) 88-163). The joint spectrum of L_1,...,L_n in every unitary representation of G is characterized as the set of the eigenvalues corresponding to a particular class of (generalized) joint eigenfunctions of positive type of L_1,...,L_n. Connections with the theory of Gelfand pairs are established in the case L_1,...,L_n generate the algebra of K-invariant left-invariant differential operators on G for some compact subgroup K of Aut(G).

Generalized uncertainty inequalities

In this paper, Heisenberg-Pauli-Weyl-type uncertainty inequalities are obtained for a pair of positive-self adjoint operators on a Hilbert space, whose spectral projectors satisfy a ``balance condition'' involving certain operator norms. This result is then applied to obtain uncertainty inequalities on Riemannian manifolds, Riemannian symmetric spaces of non-compact type, homogeneous graphs and unimodular Lie groups with sublaplacians.
