Quantum noise extraction from the interference of laser pulses in optical quantum random number generator

We propose a method for quantum noise extraction from the interference of laser pulses with random phase. Our technique is based on the calculation of a parameter, which we called the quantum reduction factor, and which allows determining the contributions of quantum and classical noises in the assumption that classical fluctuations exhibit Gaussian distribution. To the best of our knowledge, the concept of the quantum reduction factor is introduced for the first time. We use such an approach to implement the post-processing-free optical quantum random number generator with the random bit generation rate of 2 Gbps.

Split-ring polariton condensates as macroscopic two-level quantum systems

Superposition states of circular currents of exciton-polaritons mimic the superconducting flux qubits. The phase of a polariton fluid must change by an integer number of $2π$, when going around the ring. If one introduces a $π$-phase delay line in the ring, the fluid is obliged to propagate a clockwise or anticlockwise circular current to reduce the total phase gained over one round-trip to zero or to build it up to $2π$. We show that such a $π$-delay line can be provided by a dark soliton pinned to a potential well created by a C-shape non-resonant pump-spot. The resulting split-ring polariton condensates exhibit pronounced coherent oscillations passing periodically through clockwise and anticlockwise current states. These oscillations may persist far beyond the coherence time of polariton condensates. The qubits based on split-ring polariton condensates are expected to possess very high figures of merit that makes them a valuable alternative to superconducting qubits. The use of the dipole-polarized polaritons allows to control coherently the state of the qubit with the external electric field. This is shown to be one of the tools for realization of single-qubit logic operations. We propose the design of an $i$SWAP gate based on a pair of coupled polariton qubits. To demonstrate the capacity of the polariton platform for quantum computations, we propose a protocol for the realization of the Deutsch's algorithm with polariton qubit networks.

Asymptotically optimal feedback control for a system of linear oscillators

Problem of damping of an arbitrary number of linear oscillators under common bounded control is considered. We are looking for a feedback control steering the system to the equilibrium. The obtained control is asymptotically optimal: the ratio of motion time to zero with this control to the minimum one is close to 1, if the initial energy of the system is large. Some of the results based on the new lemma about sustainable observability autonomous linear systems.

Damping of a system of linear oscillators using the generalized dry friction

The problem of damping a system of linear oscillators is considered. The problem is solved by using a control in the form of dry friction. The motion of the system under the control is governed by a system of differential equations with discontinuous right-hand side. A uniqueness and continuity theorem is proved for the phase flow of this system. Thus, the control in the form of generalized dry friction defines the motion of the system of oscillators uniquely.

Gaussian mixture model for event recognition in optical time-domain reflectometry based sensing systems

We propose a novel approach to the recognition of particular classes of non-conventional events in signals from phase-sensitive optical time-domain-reflectometry-based sensors. Our algorithmic solution has two main features: filtering aimed at the de-nosing of signals and a Gaussian mixture model to cluster them. We test the proposed algorithm using experimentally measured signals. The results show that two classes of events can be distinguished with the best-case recognition probability close to 0.9 at sufficient numbers of training samples.

Feedback control for damping a system of linear oscillators

The paper is devoted to a design of a common bounded feedback control steering a system of an arbitrary number of linear oscillators to the equilibrium. At high energies, the control is based on the asymptotic theory of reachable sets of linear systems. With decreasing of the energy, a similar control with a reduced upper bound is used. On the final stage, the control is constructed by using the method of common Lyapunov functions. Special attention is paid to the cases of one and two oscillators.

Motion of a system of oscillators under the generalized dry friction control

The problem of the existence and uniqueness of the motion of the system of an arbitrary number linear oscillators under a generalized dry-friction type control is studied. This type of control arises in the problem of steering the system to equilibrium. The problem of existence and uniqueness of motion under the suggested control is resolved within the framework of the DiPerna--Lions theory of singular ordinary differential equations.

Mutual information-energy inequality for thermal states of a bipartite quantum system

In this work, we consider an upper bound for the quantum mutual information in thermal states of a bipartite quantum system. This bound is related with the interaction energy and logarithm of the partition function of the system. We demonstrate the connection between this upper bound and the value of the mutual information for the bipartite system realized by two spin-1/2 particles in the external magnetic field with the XY-Heisenberg interaction.

Perturbation theory of observable linear systems

The present work is motivated by the asymptotic control theory for a system of linear oscillators: the problem is to design a common bounded scalar control for damping all oscillators in asymptotically minimal time. The motion of the system is described in terms of a canonical system similar to that of the Pontryagin maximum principle. We consider the evolution equation for adjoint variables as a perturbed observable linear system. Due to the perturbation, the unobservable part of the state trajectory cannot be recovered exactly. We estimate the recovering error via the $L_1$-norm of perturbation. This allows us to prove that the control makes the system approach the equilibrium state with a strictly positive speed.

Structural monitoring system with fiber Bragg grating sensors: Implementation and software solution

We present a structural health monitoring system for nondestructive testing of composite materials based on the fiber Bragg grating sensors and specialized software solution. The developed structural monitoring system has potential applications for preliminary tests of novel composite materials as well as real-time structural health monitoring of industrial objects. The software solution realizes control for the system, data processing, and alert of an operator.

Towards events recognition in a distributed fiber-optic sensor system: Kolmogorov-Zurbenko filtering

The paper is about de-noising procedures aimed on events recognition in signals from a distributed fiber-optic vibration sensor system based on the phase-sensitive optical time-domain reflectometry. We report experimental results on recognition of several classes of events in a seismic background. A de-noising procedure uses the framework of the time-series analysis and Kolmogorov-Zurbenko filtering. We demonstrate that this approach allows revealing signatures of several classes of events.

Tomographic causal analysis of two-qubit states and tomographic discord

We study a behavior of two-qubit states subject to tomographic measurement. We propose a novel approach to definition of asymmetry in quantum bipartite state based on its tomographic Shannon entropies. We consider two types of measurement bases: the first is one that diagonalizes density matrices of subsystems and is used in a definition of tomographic discord, and the second is one that maximizes Shannon mutual information and relates to symmetrical form quantum discord. We show how these approaches relate to each other and then implement them to the different classes of two-qubit states. Consequently, new subclasses of X-states are revealed.

Quaternion representation and symplectic spin tomography

Quantum tomography for continuous variables is based on the symplectic transformation group acting in the phase space. A particular case of symplectic tomography is optical tomography related to the action of a special orthogonal group. In the tomographic description of spin states, the connection between special unitary and special orthogonal groups is used. We analyze the representation for spin tomography using the Cayley-Klein parameters and discuss an analog of symplectic tomography for discrete variables. We propose a representation for tomograms of discrete variables through quaternions and employ the qubit-state tomogram to illustrate the method elaborated.
