$1/N$ expansion of the D3-D5 defect CFT

We consider four dimensional $U(N)$ $\mathcal N=4$ SYM theory interacting with a 3d $\mathcal N=4$ theory living on a codimension-one interface and holographically dual to the D3-D5 system without flux. Localization captures several observables in this dCFT, including its free energy, related to the defect expectation value, and single trace $\frac{1}{2}$-BPS composite scalars. These quantities may be computed in a hermitian one-matrix model with non-polynomial single-trace potential. We exploit the integrable Volterra hierarchy underlying the matrix model and systematically study its $1/N$ expansion at any value of the 't Hooft coupling. In particular, the strong coupling regime is determined -- up to non-perturbative exponentially suppressed corrections -- by differential relations that constrain higher order terms in the $1/N$ expansion. The analysis is extended to the model with $SU(N)$ gauge symmetry by resorting to the more general Toda lattice equations.

Supersymmetric phases of 4d N=4 SYM at large N

We find a family of complex saddle-points at large N of the matrix model for the superconformal index of SU(N) N=4 super Yang-Mills theory on $S^3 \times S^1$ with one chemical potential $τ$. The saddle-point configurations are labelled by points $(m,n)$ on the lattice $Λ_τ= \mathbb{Z} τ+\mathbb{Z}$ with $\text{gcd}(m,n)=1$. The eigenvalues at a given saddle are uniformly distributed along a string winding $(m,n)$ times along the $(A,B)$ cycles of the torus $\mathbb{C}/Λ_τ$. The action of the matrix model extended to the torus is closely related to the Bloch-Wigner elliptic dilogarithm, and the related Bloch formula allows us to calculate the action at the saddle-points in terms of real-analytic Eisenstein series. The actions of $(0,1)$ and $(1,0)$ agree with that of pure AdS$_5$ and the supersymmetric AdS$_5$ black hole, respectively. The black hole saddle dominates the canonical ensemble when $τ$ is close to the origin, and there are new saddles that dominate when $τ$ approaches rational points. The extension of the action in terms of modular forms leads to a simple treatment of the Cardy-like limit $τ\to 0$.

The asymptotic growth of states of the 4d N=1 superconformal index

We show that the superconformal index of N=1 superconformal field theories in four dimensions has an asymptotic growth of states which is exponential in the charges. Our analysis holds in a Cardy-like limit of large charges, for which the index is dominated by small values of chemical potentials. In this limit we find the saddle points of the integral that defines the superconformal index using two different methods. One method, valid for finite N, is to first take the Cardy-like limit and then find the saddle points. The other method is to analyze the saddle points at large N and then take the Cardy-like limit. The result of both analyses is that the asymptotic growth of states of the superconformal index exactly agrees with the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy of supersymmetric black holes in the dual AdS$_5$ theory.

Microscopic origin of the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy of supersymmetric AdS$_{\bf 5}$ black holes

We present a holographic derivation of the entropy of supersymmetric asymptotically AdS$_5$ black holes. We define a BPS limit of black hole thermodynamics by first focussing on a supersymmetric family of complexified solutions and then reaching extremality. We show that in this limit the black hole entropy is the Legendre transform of the on-shell gravitational action with respect to three chemical potentials subject to a constraint. This constraint follows from supersymmetry and regularity in the Euclidean bulk geometry. Further, we calculate, using localization, the exact partition function of the dual $\mathcal{N}=1$ SCFT on a twisted $S^1\times S^3$ with complexified chemical potentials obeying this constraint. This defines a generalization of the supersymmetric Casimir energy, whose Legendre transform at large $N$ exactly reproduces the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy of the black hole.

Black Holes in the 3D Higher Spin Theory and Their Quasi Normal Modes

We present a class of 3D Black Holes based on flat connections which are polynomials in the BTZ $hs(λ) \times hs(λ)$-valued connection. We solve analytically the fluctuation equations of matter in their background and find the spectrum of their Quasi Normal Modes. We analyze the bulk to boundary two-point functions. We also relate our results and those arising in other backgrounds discussed recently in the literature on the subject.

Partition Function of $N=2$ Gauge Theories on a Squashed $S^4$ with $SU(2)\times U(1)$ Isometry

We study $N=2$ supersymmetric gauge theories on a large family of squashed 4-spheres preserving $SU(2)\times U(1)\subset SO(4)$ isometry and determine the conditions under which this background is supersymmetric. We then compute the partition function of the theories by using localization technique. The results indicate that for $N=2$ SUSY, including both vector-multiplets and hypermultiplets, the partition function is independent of the arbitrary squashing functions as well as of the other supergravity background fields.

About the phase space of SL(3) Black Holes

In this note we address some issues of recent interest, related to the asymptotic symmetry algebra of higher spin black holes in $sl(3,\mathbb{R})\times sl(3,\mathbb{R})$ Chern Simons (CS) formulation. We compute the fixed time Dirac bracket algebra that acts on two different phase spaces. Both of these spaces contain black holes as zero modes. The result for one of these phase spaces is explicitly shown to be isomorphic to $W^{(2)}_3\times W^{(2)}_3$ in first order perturbations.

Holography and Conformal Anomaly Matching

We discuss various issues related to the understanding of the conformal anomaly matching in CFT from the dual holographic viewpoint. First, we act with a PBH diffeomorphism on a generic 5D RG flow geometry and show that the corresponding on-shell bulk action reproduces the Wess-Zumino term for the dilaton of broken conformal symmetry, with the expected coefficient aUV-aIR. Then we consider a specific 3D example of RG flow whose UV asymptotics is normalizable and admits a 6D lifting. We promote a modulus ρappearing in the geometry to a function of boundary coordinates. In a 6D description ρ is the scale of an SU(2) instanton. We determine the smooth deformed background up to second order in the space-time derivatives of ρand find that the 3D on-shell action reproduces a boundary kinetic term for the massless field τ= log(ρ) with the correct coefficient δc=cUV-cIR. We further analyze the linearized fluctuations around the deformed background geometry and compute the one-point functions <Tμν> and show that they are reproduced by a Liouville-type action for the massless scalar τ, with background charge due to the coupling to the 2D curvature R. The resulting central charge matches δc. We give an interpretation of this action in terms of the (4,0) SCFT of the D1-D5 system in type I theory.

Quantum phase transition from a Antiferromagnetic-Insulator to a Paramagnetic-Metal laying beneath the superconducting dome

The effect of doping on the TB model of the CuO planes in the La2CuO4 constructed in previous works is investigated. Firstly, it is noted that the model employed constitutes a generalization of the Hubbard one for the same system. Thus, the former predictions of the insulator gap, antiferromagnetic character and the existence of a paramagnetic-pseudogap state, become natural ones to be expected from this more general picture. The effect of hole doping on the antiferromagnetic-insulator state (AFI) and the paramagnetic-pseudogap one, is investigated. The results predict a quantum phase transition (QPT) from the AFI state at low doping to a paramagnetic-metallic state (PM) at higher hole densities. Therefore, a clear description of the hidden QPT laying beneath the dome in high critical temperature superconducting materials is found. At low doping, the system prefers the AFI state, and at the critical value of the doping density 0.2, the energy of a metallic state becomes lower. The evolution with small doping values of the band spectrum of the AFI state, shows that the holes tend to become localized at the middle of the sides of the reduced Brillouin zone (BZ). Then, around the critical value, the holes of the AFI state move to become situated at the corners of the same reduced BZ, showing a structural change at the phase transition point. Thus, the PM state appearing at the QPT acquires the same behavior with respect to the position of holes as the pseudogap state. In the small doping limit a clear difference between the degree of convergence of the iterative self-consistent solution is associated to an even or odd number of electrons. It suggests that the Kramers degeneration in combination with the spin-spatial entangled nature of the hole states, leads to a new kind of pair interaction between two holes. The binding energy value is estimated as a function of the screening.

Spontaneous symmetry breaking approach to La2CuO4 properties: hints for matching the Mott and Slater pictures

Special solutions of the Hartree-Fock (HF) problem for Coulomb interacting electrons, being described by a simple model of the Cu-O planes in La2CuO4, are presented. One of the mean field states obtained, is able to predict some of the basic properties of this material, such as its insulator character and the antiferromagnetic order. The natural appearance of pseudogaps in some states of this compound is also indicated by another of the HF states obtained. These surprising results follow after eliminating spin and crystal symmetry restrictions which are usually imposed on the single particle HF orbitals, by means of employing a rotational invariant formulation of the HF scheme which was originally introduced by Dirac. Therefore, it is exemplified how, up to now being considered strong correlation effects, can be described by improving the HF solution of the physical systems. In other words, defining the correlation effects as such ones shown by the physical system and which are not predicted by the best HF (lowest energy) solution, allows to explain currently assumed as strong correlation properties, as simple mean field ones. The discussion also helps to clarify the role of the antiferromagnetism and pseudogaps in the physics of the HTSC materials and indicates a promising way to start conciliating the Mott and Slater pictures for the description of the transition metal oxides and other strongly correlated electron systems.
