Constrained systems, generalized Hamilton-Jacobi actions, and quantization

Mechanical systems (i.e., one-dimensional field theories) with constraints are the focus of this paper. In the classical theory, systems with infinite-dimensional targets are considered as well (this then encompasses also higher-dimensional field theories in the hamiltonian formalism). The properties of the Hamilton-Jacobi (HJ) action are described in details and several examples are explicitly computed (including nonabelian Chern-Simons theory, where the HJ action turns out to be the gauged Wess-Zumino-Witten action). Perturbative quantization, limited in this note to finite-dimensional targets, is performed in the framework of the Batalin-Vilkovisky (BV) formalism in the bulk and of the Batalin-Fradkin-Vilkovisky (BFV) formalism at the endpoints. As a sanity check of the method, it is proved that the semiclassical contribution of the physical part of the evolution operator is still given by the HJ action. Several examples are computed explicitly. In particular, it is shown that the toy model for nonabelian Chern-Simons theory and the toy model for 7D Chern-Simons theory with nonlinear Hitchin polarization do not have quantum corrections in the physical part (the extension of these results to the actual cases is discussed in the companion paper [arXiv:2012.13983]). Background material for both the classical part (symplectic geometry, generalized generating functions, HJ actions, and the extension of these concepts to infinite-dimensional manifolds) and the quantum part (BV-BFV formalism) is provided.

Equivariant Batalin-Vilkovisky formalism

We study an equivariant extension of the Batalin-Vilkovisky formalism for quantizing gauge theories. Namely, we introduce a general framework to encompass failures of the quantum master equation, and we apply it to the natural equivariant extension of AKSZ solutions of the classical master equation (CME). As examples of the construction, we recover the equivariant extension of supersymmetric Yang-Mills in 2d and of Donaldson-Witten theory.

On the Globalization of the Poisson Sigma Model in the BV-BFV Formalism

We construct a formal global quantization of the Poisson Sigma Model in the BV-BFV formalism using the perturbative quantization of AKSZ theories on manifolds with boundary and analyze the properties of the boundary BFV operator. Moreover, we consider mixed boundary conditions and show that they lead to quantum anomalies, i.e. to a failure of the (modified differential) Quantum Master Equation. We show that it can be restored by adding boundary terms to the action, at the price of introducing corner terms in the boundary operator. We also show that the quantum GBFV operator on the total space of states is a differential, i.e. squares to zero, which is necessary for a well-defined BV cohomology.

Theta Invariants of lens spaces via the BV-BFV formalism

The goal of this paper is to investigate the Theta invariant --- an invariant of framed 3-manifolds associated with the lowest order contribution to the Chern-Simons partition function --- in the context of the quantum BV-BFV formalism. Namely, we compute the state on the solid torus to low degree in $\hbar$, and apply the gluing procedure to compute the Theta invariant of lens spaces. We use a distributional propagator which does not extend to a compactified configuration space, so to compute loop diagrams we have to define a regularization of the product of the distributional propagators, which is done in an \emph{ad hoc} fashion. Also, a polarization has to be chosen for the quantization process. Our results agree with results in the literature for one type of polarization, but for another type of polarization there are extra terms.

Poisson sigma model and semiclassical quantization of integrable systems

In this paper we outline the construction of semiclassical eigenfunctions of integrable models in terms of the semiclassical path integral for the Poisson sigma model with the target space being the phase space of the integrable system. The semiclassical path integral is defined as a formal power series with coefficients being Feynman diagrams. We also argue that in a similar way one can obtain irreducible semiclassical representations of Kontsevich's star product.

A note on the Poisson bracket of 2d smeared fluxes in loop quantum gravity

We show that the non-Abelian nature of geometric fluxes---the corner-stone in the definition of quantum geometry in the framework of loop quantum gravity (LQG)---follows directly form the continuum canonical commutations relations of gravity in connection variables and the validity of the Gauss law. The present treatment simplifies previous formulations and thus identifies more clearly the root of the discreteness of geometric operators in LQG. Our statement generalizes to arbitrary gauge theories and relies only on the validity of the Gauss law.

BV-BFV approach to General Relativity, Einstein-Hilbert action

The present paper shows that general relativity in the Arnowitt-Deser-Misner formalism admits a BV-BFV formulation. More precisely, for any $d + 1 \not= 2$ (pseudo-) Riemannian manifold M with space-like or time-like boundary components, the BV data on the bulk induces compatible BFV data on the boundary. As a byproduct, the usual canonical formulation of general relativity is recovered in a straightforward way.

Comparing Poisson Sigma Model with A-model

We discuss the A-model as a gauge fixing of the Poisson Sigma Model with target a symplectic structure. We complete the discussion in [arXiv:0706.3164], where a gauge fixing defined by a compatible complex structure was introduced, by showing how to recover the A-model hierarchy of observables in terms of the AKSZ observables. Moreover, we discuss the off-shell supersymmetry of the A-model as a residual BV symmetry of the gauge-fixed PSM action.

Perturbative BV theories with Segal-like gluing

This is a survey of our program of perturbative quantization of gauge theories on manifolds with boundary compatible with cutting/pasting and with gauge symmetry treated by means of a cohomological resolution (Batalin-Vilkovisky) formalism. We also give two explicit quantum examples -- abelian BF theory and the Poisson sigma model. This exposition is based on a talk by P.M. at the ICMP 2015 in Santiago de Chile.

Wave relations

The wave equation (free boson) problem is studied from the viewpoint of the relations on the symplectic manifolds associated to the boundary induced by solutions. Unexpectedly there is still something to say on this simple, well-studied problem. In particular, boundaries which do not allow for a meaningful Hamiltonian evolution are not problematic from the viewpoint of relations. In the two-dimensional Minkowski case, these relations are shown to be Lagrangian. This result is then extended to a wide class of metrics and is conjectured to be true also in higher dimensions for nice enough metrics. A counterexample where the relation is not Lagrangian is provided by the Misner space.

Coisotropic submanifolds and dual pairs

The Poisson sigma model is a widely studied two-dimensional topological field theory. This note shows that boundary conditions for the Poisson sigma model are related to coisotropic submanifolds (a result announced in [math.QA/0309180]) and that the corresponding reduced phase space is a (possibly singular) dual pair between the reduced spaces of the given two coisotropic submanifolds. In addition the generalization to a more general tensor field is considered and it is shown that the theory produces Lagrangian evolution relations if and only if the tensor field is Poisson.

Semiclassical quantization of classical field theories

These lectures are an introduction to formal semiclassical quantization of classical field theory. First we develop the Hamiltonian formalism for classical field theories on space time with boundary. It does not have to be a cylinder as in the usual Hamiltonian framework. Then we outline formal semiclassical quantization in the finite dimensional case. Towards the end we give an example of such a quantization in the case of Abelian Chern-Simons theory.

Biquantization of symmetric pairs and the quantum shift

The biquantization of symmetric pairs was studied in Cattaneo and Torossian in terms of Kontsevich-like graphs. This paper, also in view of recent results in Calaque et al, amends a minor mistake that did not spoil the main results of the paper. The mistake consisted in ignoring a regular term in the boundary contribution of some propagators. On the other hand, its correction brings back the quantum shift, present in the approaches by the orbit method, that was otherwise puzzlingly missing. In addition a detailed comparison of the two, equivalent, ways of defining biquantization working on the upper half plane or on one quadrant is presented, as well as a more conceptual approach to biquantization and the due corrections of some results of Cattaneo and Torossian in view of the aforementioned correction by the quantum shift. Finally, we review the triquantization construction developed for the treatment of characters by taking into accounts the same boundary problem as for the biquantization.

Integration of Lie Algebroid Comorphisms

We show that the path construction integration of Lie algebroids by Lie groupoids is an actual equivalence from the category of integrable Lie algebroids and complete Lie algebroid comorphisms to the category of source 1-connected Lie groupoids and Lie groupoid comorphisms. This allows us to construct an actual symplectization functor in Poisson geometry. We include examples to show that the integrability of comorphisms and Poisson maps may not hold in the absence of a completeness assumption.

The Poisson sigma model on closed surfaces

Using methods of formal geometry, the Poisson sigma model on a closed surface is studied in perturbation theory. The effective action, as a function on vacua, is shown to have no quantum corrections if the surface is a torus or if the Poisson structure is regular and unimodular (e.g., symplectic). In the case of a Kahler structure or of a trivial Poisson structure, the partition function on the torus is shown to be the Euler characteristic of the target; some evidence is given for this to happen more generally. The methods of formal geometry introduced in this paper might be applicable to other sigma models, at least of the AKSZ type.

Symplectic Microgeometry II: Generating functions

We adapt the notion of generating functions for lagrangian submanifolds to symplectic microgeometry. We show that a symplectic micromorphism always admits a global generating function. As an application, we describe hamiltonian flows as special symplectic micromorphisms whose local generating functions are the solutions of Hamilton-Jacobi equations. We obtain a purely categorical formulation of the temporal evolution in classical mechanics.

The character map in deformation quantization

The third author recently proved that the Shoikhet-Dolgushev L-infinity-morphism from Hochschild chains of the algebra of smooth functions on manifold to differential forms extends to cyclic chains. Localization at a solution of the Maurer-Cartan equation gives an isomorphism, which we call character map, from the periodic cyclic homology of a formal associative deformation of the algebra of functions to de Rham cohomology. We prove that the character map is compatible with the Gauss-Manin connection, extending a result of Calaque and Rossi on the compatibility with the cap product. As a consequence, the image of the periodic cyclic cycle 1 is independent of the deformation parameter and we compute it to be the A-roof genus of the manifold. Our results also imply the Tamarkin-Tsygan index Theorem.

Effective Batalin--Vilkovisky theories, equivariant configuration spaces and cyclic chains

Kontsevich's formality theorem states that the differential graded Lie algebra of multidifferential operators on a manifold M is L-infinity-quasi-isomorphic to its cohomology. The construction of the L-infinity map is given in terms of integrals of differential forms on configuration spaces of points in the upper half-plane. Here we consider configuration spaces of points in the disk and work equivariantly with respect to the rotation group. This leads to considering the differential graded Lie algebra of multivector fields endowed with a divergence operator. In the case of R^d with standard volume form, we obtain an L-infinity morphism of modules over this differential graded Lie algebra from cyclic chains of the algebra of functions to multivector fields. As a first application we give a construction of traces on algebras of functions with star-products associated with unimodular Poisson structures. The construction is based on the Batalin--Vilkovisky quantization of the Poisson sigma model on the disk and in particular on the treatment of its zero modes.

Quantification pour les paires symetriques et diagrammes de Kontsevich

In this article we use the expansion for biquantization described in Cattaneo-Felder [math.QA/0309180] for the case of symmetric spaces. We introduce a function of two variables $E(X,Y)$ for any symmetric pairs. This function has an expansion in terms of Kontsevich's diagrams. We recover most of the known results though in a more systematic way by using some elementary properties of this $E$ function. We prove that Cattaneo and Felder's star product coincides with Rouviere's for any symmetric pairs. We generalize some of Lichnerowicz's results for the commutativity of the algebra of invariant differential operators and solve a long standing problem posed by M. Duflo for the expression of invariant differential operators on any symmetric spaces in exponential coordinates. We describe the Harish-Chandra homomorphism in the case of symmetric spaces by using all these constructions. We develop a new method to construct characters for algebras of invariant differential operators. We apply these methods in the case of $σ$-stable polarizations.

Deformation Quantization and Reduction

This note is an overview of the Poisson sigma model (PSM) and its applications in deformation quantization. Reduction of coisotropic and pre-Poisson submanifolds, their appearance as branes of the PSM, quantization in terms of L-infinity and A-infinity algebras, and bimodule structures are recalled. As an application, an "almost" functorial quantization of Poisson maps is presented if no anomalies occur. This leads in principle to a novel approach for the quantization of Poisson-Lie groups.

On the Hochschild-Kostant-Rosenberg map for graded manifolds

We show that the Hochschild-Kostant-Rosenberg map from the space of multivector fields on a graded manifold N (endowed with a Berezinian volume) to the cohomology of the algebra of multidifferential operators on N (as a subalgebra of the Hochschild complex of the algebra of smooth functions on N) is an isomorphism of Batalin-Vilkovisky algebras. These results generalize to differential graded manifolds.

Formal Lagrangian Operad

Given a symplectic manifold $M$, we may define an operad structure on the the spaces $\op^k$ of the Lagrangian submanifolds of $(\bar{M})^k\times M$ via symplectic reduction. If $M$ is also a symplectic groupoid, then its multiplication space is an associative product in this operad. Following this idea, we provide a deformation theory for symplectic groupoids analog to the deformation theory of algebras. It turns out that the semi-classical part of Kontsevich's deformation of $C^\infty(\R^d)$ is a deformation of the trivial symplectic groupoid structure of $T^*\R^d$.

preprint2003arXiv

Formal symplectic groupoid

The multiplicative structure of the trivial symplectic groupoid over $\mathbb R^d$ associated to the zero Poisson structure can be expressed in terms of a generating function. We address the problem of deforming such a generating function in the direction of a non-trivial Poisson structure so that the multiplication remains associative. We prove that such a deformation is unique under some reasonable conditions and we give the explicit formula for it. This formula turns out to be the semi-classical approximation of Kontsevich's deformation formula. For the case of a linear Poisson structure, the deformed generating function reduces exactly to the CBH formula of the associated Lie algebra. The methods used to prove existence are interesting in their own right as they come from an at first sight unrelated domain of mathematics: the Runge--Kutta theory of the numeric integration of ODE's.

On the integration of Poisson manifolds, Lie algebroids, and coisotropic submanifolds

In recent years methods for the integration of Poisson manifolds and of Lie algebroids have been proposed, the latter being usually presented as a generalization of the former. In this note it is shown that the latter method is actually related to (and may be derived from) a particular case of the former if one regards dual of Lie algebroids as special Poisson manifolds. The core of the proof is the fact, discussed in the second part of this note, that coisotropic submanifolds of a (twisted) Poisson manifold are in one-to-one correspondence with possibly singular Lagrangian subgroupoids of source-simply-connected (twisted) symplectic groupoids.

Configuration spaces and Vassiliev classes in any dimension

The real cohomology of the space of imbeddings of S^1 into R^n, n>3, is studied by using configuration space integrals. Nontrivial classes are explicitly constructed. As a by-product, we prove the nontriviality of certain cycles of imbeddings obtained by blowing up transversal double points in immersions. These cohomology classes generalize in a nontrivial way the Vassiliev knot invariants. Other nontrivial classes are constructed by considering the restriction of classes defined on the corresponding spaces of immersions.

Poisson sigma models and symplectic groupoids

We consider the Poisson sigma model associated to a Poisson manifold. The perturbative quantization of this model yields the Kontsevich star product formula. We study here the classical model in the Hamiltonian formalism. The phase space is the space of leaves of a Hamiltonian foliation and has a natural groupoid structure. If it is a manifold then it is a symplectic groupoid for the given Poisson manifold. We study various families of examples. In particular, a global symplectic groupoid for a general class of two-dimensional Poisson domains is constructed.
