Cyclicity in Dirichlet-type spaces and extremal polynomials II: functions on the bidisk

We study Dirichlet-type spaces Dα\mathfrak{D}_α of analytic functions in the unit bidisk and their cyclic elements. These are the functions ff for which there exists a sequence (pn)n=1∞(p_n)_{n=1}^{\infty} of polynomials in two variables such that ∥pnf−1∥α→0\|p_nf-1\|_α\to 0 as n→∞n\to \infty. We obtain a number of conditions that imply cyclicity, and obtain sharp estimates on the best possible rate of decay of the norms ∥pnf−1∥α\|p_nf-1\|_α, in terms of the degree of pnp_n, for certain classes of functions using results concerning Hilbert spaces of functions of one complex variable and comparisons between norms in one and two variables. We give examples of polynomials with no zeros on the bidisk that are not cyclic in Dα\mathfrak{D}_α for α>1/2α>1/2 (including the Dirichlet space); this is in contrast with the one-variable case where all non-vanishing polynomials are cyclic in Dirichlet-type spaces that are not algebras (α≤1α\le 1). Further, we point out the necessity of a capacity zero condition on zero sets (in an appropriate sense) for cyclicity in the setting of the bidisk, and conclude by stating some open problems.

An index formula in connection with meromorphic approximation

Let ΦΦ be a continuous n×nn\times n matrix-valued function on the unit circle $\T$ such that the (k−1)(k-1)th singular value of the Hankel operator with symbol ΦΦ is greater than the kkth singular value. In this case, it is well-known that ΦΦ has a unique superoptimal meromorphic approximant QQ in H(k)∞H^{\infty}_{(k)}; that is, QQ has at most kk poles in the unit disc D\mathbb{D} (i.e. the McMillan degree of QQ in D\mathbb{D} is at most kk) and QQ minimizes the essential suprema of singular values sj((Φ−Q)(ζ))s_{j}((Φ-Q)(ζ)), j≥0j\geq0, with respect to the lexicographic ordering. For each j≥0j\geq 0, the essential supremum of sj((Φ−Q)(ζ))s_{j}((Φ-Q)(ζ)) is called the jjth superoptimal singular value of ΦΦ of degree kk. We prove that if ΦΦ has nn non-zero superoptimal singular values of degree kk, then the Toeplitz operator TΦ−QT_{Φ-Q} with symbol Φ−QΦ-Q is Fredholm and has index \[ \ind T_{Φ-Q}=\dim\ker T_{Φ-Q}=2k+\dim\mathcal{E}, \] where E={ξ∈ker⁡HQ:∥HΦξ∥2=∥(Φ−Q)ξ∥2}\mathcal{E}=\{ξ\in\ker H_{Q}: \|H_Φξ\|_{2}=\|(Φ-Q)ξ\|_{2}\} and HΦH_Φ denotes the Hankel operator with symbol ΦΦ. In fact, this result can be extended from continuous matrix-valued functions to the wider class of kk-\emph{admissible} matrix-valued functions, i.e. essentially bounded n×nn\times n matrix-valued functions ΦΦ on $\T$ for which the essential norm of the Hankel operator HΦH_Φ is strictly less than the smallest non-zero superoptimal singular value of ΦΦ of degree kk.

Monotone thematic factorizations of matrix functions

We continue the study of the so-called thematic factorizations of admissible very badly approximable matrix functions. These factorizations were introduced by V.V. Peller and N.J. Young for studying superoptimal approximation by bounded analytic matrix functions. Even though thematic indices associated with a thematic factorization of an admissible very badly approximable matrix function are not uniquely determined by the function itself, R.B. Alexeev and V.V. Peller showed that the thematic indices of any monotone non-increasing thematic factorization of an admissible very badly approximable matrix function are uniquely determined. In this paper, we prove the existence of monotone non-decreasing thematic factorizations for admissible very badly approximable matrix functions. It is also shown that the thematic indices appearing in a monotone non-decreasing thematic factorization are not uniquely determined by the matrix function itself. Furthermore, we show that the monotone non-increasing thematic factorization gives rise to a great number of other thematic factorizations.
