A Poincaré-Birkhoff theorem for tight Reeb flows on S3S^3

We consider Reeb flows on the tight 33-sphere admitting a pair of closed orbits forming a Hopf link. If the rotation numbers associated to the transverse linearized dynamics at these orbits fail to satisfy a certain resonance condition then there exist infinitely many periodic trajectories distinguished by their linking numbers with the components of the link. This result admits a natural comparison to the Poincaré-Birkhoff theorem on area-preserving annulus homeomorphisms. An analogous theorem holds on SO(3)SO(3) and applies to geodesic flows of Finsler metrics on S2S^2.

Contact Homology of Orbit Complements and Implied Existence

For Reeb vector fields on closed 3-manifolds, cylindrical contact homology is used to show that the existence of a set of closed Reeb orbit with certain knotting/linking properties implies the existence of other Reeb orbits with other knotting/linking properties relative to the original set. We work out a few examples on the 3-sphere to illustrate the theory, and describe an application to closed geodesics on S2S^2 (a version of a result due to Angenent).

Cylindrical Contact Homology on Complements of Reeb Orbits

Let VV be a closed 3-manifold with a contact form λλ, and let LL be a link consisting of closed orbits for the Reeb vector field of λλ. We study the problem of defining cylindrical contact homology on the non-compact manifold V\LV \backslash L, giving sufficient conditions on a class of forms so that the chain complex can be defined in the expected way. Under further technical assumptions we show that the homology of the complex up to isomorphism is independent of choices except possibly the values of certain Conley-Zehnder indices associated with LL. A simple example shows that the homology can depend on the Conley-Zehnder indices of the components of LL.
