Sharp systolic inequalities for Riemannian and Finsler spheres of revolution

We prove that the systolic ratio of a sphere of revolution $S$ does not exceed $π$ and equals $π$ if and only if $S$ is Zoll. More generally, we consider the rotationally symmetric Finsler metrics on a sphere of revolution which are defined by shifting the tangent unit circles by a Killing vector field. We prove that in this class of metrics the systolic ratio does not exceed $π$ and equals $π$ if and only if the metric is Riemannian and Zoll.

Contact forms with large systolic ratio in dimension three

The systolic ratio of a contact form on a closed three-manifold is the quotient of the square of the shortest period of closed Reeb orbits by the contact volume. We show that every co-orientable contact structure on any closed three-manifold is defined by a contact form with arbitrarily large systolic ratio. This shows that the many existing systolic inequalities in Finsler and Riemannian geometry are not purely contact-topological phenomena.

Elliptic bindings for dynamically convex Reeb flows on the real projective three-space

The first result of this paper is that every contact form on $\mathbb{R} P^3$ sufficiently $C^\infty$-close to a dynamically convex contact form admits an elliptic-parabolic closed Reeb orbit which is $2$-unknotted, has self-linking number $-1/2$ and transverse rotation number in $(1/2,1]$. Our second result implies that any $p$-unknotted periodic orbit with self-linking number $-1/p$ of a dynamically convex Reeb flow on a lens space of order $p$ is the binding of a rational open book decomposition, whose pages are global surfaces of section. As an application we show that in the planar circular restricted three-body problem for energies below the first Lagrange value and large mass ratio, there is a special link consisting of two periodic trajectories for the massless satellite near the smaller primary -- lunar problem -- with the same contact-topological and dynamical properties of the orbits found by Conley in~\cite{conley} for large negative energies. Both periodic trajectories bind rational open book decompositions with disk-like pages which are global surfaces of section. In particular, one of the components is an elliptic-parabolic periodic orbit.

A Poincaré-Birkhoff theorem for tight Reeb flows on $S^3$

We consider Reeb flows on the tight $3$-sphere admitting a pair of closed orbits forming a Hopf link. If the rotation numbers associated to the transverse linearized dynamics at these orbits fail to satisfy a certain resonance condition then there exist infinitely many periodic trajectories distinguished by their linking numbers with the components of the link. This result admits a natural comparison to the Poincaré-Birkhoff theorem on area-preserving annulus homeomorphisms. An analogous theorem holds on $SO(3)$ and applies to geodesic flows of Finsler metrics on $S^2$.

Persistence of fixed points under rigid perturbations of maps

Let $f:S^1\times [0,1]\to S^1\times [0,1]$ be a real-analytic annulus diffeomorphism which is homotopic to the identity map and preserves an area form. Assume that for some lift $\tilde {f}:\mathbb{R}\times [0,1]\rightarrow \mathbb{R}\times [0,1]$ we have ${\rm Fix}(\tilde{f})=\mathbb{R}\times \{0\}$ and that $\tilde{f}$ positively translates points in $\mathbb{R}\times \{1\}$. Let $\tilde{f}_ε$ be the perturbation of $\tilde{f}$ by the rigid horizontal translation $(x,y)\mapsto (x+ε,y)$. We show that for all $ε>0$ sufficiently small we have ${\rm Fix} (\tilde{f}_ε)=\emptyset $. The proof follows from Kerékjártó's construction of Brouwer lines for orientation preserving homeomorphisms of the plane with no fixed points. This result turns out to be sharp with respect to the regularity assumption: there exists a diffeomorphism $f$ satisfying all the properties above, except that $f$ is not real-analytic but only smooth, so that the above conclusion is false. Such a map is constructed via generating functions.

Global properties of tight Reeb flows with applications to Finsler geodesic flows on $S^2$

We show that if a Finsler metric on $S^2$ with reversibility $r$ has flag curvatures $K$ satisfying $(\frac{r}{r+1})^2 <K \leq 1$, then closed geodesics with specific contact-topological properties cannot exist, in particular there are no closed geodesics with precisely one transverse self-intersection point. This is a special case of a more general phenomenon, and other closed geodesics with many self-intersections are also excluded. We provide examples of Randers type, obtained by suitably modifying the metrics constructed by Katok \cite{katok}, proving that this pinching condition is sharp. Our methods are borrowed from the theory of pseudo-holomorphic curves in symplectizations. Finally, we study global dynamical aspects of 3-dimensional energy levels $C^2$-close to $S^3$.
