Comments on the negative specific heat of the $T \bar T$ deformed symmetric product CFT

We show that the $T \bar T$ deformation of conformal field theories whose entropy grows as $S(E) \sim E^γ$ for $γ> 1/2$ exhibits negative specific heat in its microcanonical thermodynamic function $S({\cal E})$. We analyze the large $N$ symmetric product CFT as a concrete example of a CFT with this property and compute the thermodynamic functions such as $S({\cal E})$ and ${\cal E}(T)$. The negative specific heat in the microcanonical data is interpreted as signaling the first order phase transition when the system is coupled to a heat bath.

Weighed average over Narain moduli space as $T \bar T$ deformation of CFT target space

We consider the weighted average of a two dimensional CFT, whose target space is $T^2$, over its Narain moduli space. We take as the weighing function the integral kernel which gives rise to $T \bar T$ deformation when applied to the world sheet moduli data of the partition function viewed as vacuum amplitude when the world sheet is a torus. We compute the smeared partition function where this kernel is applied to the target space moduli. Smearing the partition function over the parameter space of a field theory generally leads to the breakdown in the ability to write the partition function as a sum over Boltzmann factor with unit coefficients. The weight function inspired by the $T \bar T$ deformation appears to be an exception to this general expectation. We show that this smearing leads to a marginal deformation corresponding to the overall rescaling of the target space $T^2$.

Thermodynamics of $T \bar T$, $J \bar T$, $T \bar J$ deformed conformal field theories

We compute the Hagedorn temperature of $μT \bar T + \varepsilon_+ J \bar T + \varepsilon_-T \bar J$ deformed CFT using the universal kernel formula for the thermal partition function. We find a closed analytic expression for the free energy and the Hagedorn temperature as a function of $μ$, $\varepsilon_+$, and $\varepsilon_-$ for the case of a compact scalar boson by taking the large volume limit. We also compute the Hagedorn temperature for the single trace deformed $AdS_3 \times S^1 \times T^3 \times S^3$ using holographic methods. We identify black hole configurations whose thermodynamics matches the functional dependence on $(μ, \varepsilon_+, \varepsilon_-)$ of the double trace deformed compact scalars.

$T \bar{T},J \bar T$, $T \bar{J}$ Partition Sums From String Theory

We calculate the torus partition sum of a general $CFT_2$ with left and right moving conserved currents $J$ and $\bar J$, perturbed by a combination of the irrelevant operators $T\bar T$, $J\bar T$ and $T\bar J$. We use string theory techniques to write it as an integral transform of the partition sum of the unperturbed CFT with chemical potentials for the left and right moving conserved charges. The resulting expression transforms in the right way under the modular group, and reproduces the known spectrum of these models. We also derive a formula for the partition function of deformed $CFT_2$ with non-vanishing chemical potential.

Strings, Symmetric Products, $T \bar{T}$ deformations and Hecke Operators

We derive a formula for the torus partition sum of the symmetric product of $T\bar T$ deformed CFT's, using previous work on long strings in (deformed) $AdS_3$, and universality. The result is given by an integral transform of the partition function for the block of the symmetric product, summed over its Hecke transforms, and is manifestly modular invariant. The spectrum is interpretable as a gas of multiply wound long strings with a particular orientation.

Resolved gravity duals of ${\cal N}=4$ quiver field theories in 2+1 dimensions

We generalize the construction by Aharony, Hashimoto, Hirano, and Ouyang of ${\cal N}=4$ quiver gauge theory with gauge group $U(N+M) \times U(N)$, $k$ fundamentals charged under $U(N)$ and bi-fundamentals, to the case with gauge group $\prod_{i=1}^{\hat k} U(N_i)$ with $k_i$ fundamentals charged under $U(N_i)$. This construction is facilitated by considering the resolved $ALE_{\hat k} \times TN_{k}$ background in M-theory including non-trivial fluxes through the resolved 4-cycles in the geometry. We also describe the M-theory lift of the IIA Page charge quantization condition. Finally, we clarify the role of string corrections in various regimes of parameter space.

Comments on s-rule violating configurations in field theory

We explicitly construct a configuration of ${\cal N}=4$ supersymmetry Yang-Mills theory with gauge group $U(N)$ on an interval on length $L$ with a D5-like boundary condition on one end and an NS5-like boundary condition on the other. For $N>1$, such a configuration violates the $s$-rule and is non-supersymmetric. We compute the energy relative to the BPS bound of these configurations and find that it is proportional to $N(N^2-1) g_{YM4}^{-2} L^{-3}$.

Dynamics of ${\cal N}=4$ supersymmetric field theories in 2+1 dimensions and their gravity dual

In this note we consider ${\cal N}=4$ SYM theories in 2+1 dimensions with gauge group $U(N)\times U(M)$ and $k$ hypermultiplets charged under the $U(N)$. When $k > 2(N-M)$, the theory flows to a superconformal fixed point in the IR. Theories with $k <2(N-M)$, on the other hand, flows to strong coupling. We explore these theories from the perspective of gravity dual. We find that the gravity duals of theories with $k < (N-M)$ contain enhancons even in situations where repulson singularities are absent. We argue that supergravity description is unreliable in the region near these enhancon points. Instead, we show how to construct reliable sugra duals to particular points on the Coulomb branch where the enhancon is screened. We explore how these singularities reappear as one moves around in Coulomb branch and comment on possible field theory interpretation of this phenomenon. In analyzing gauge/gravity duality for these models, we encountered one unexpected surprise, that the condition for the supergravity solution to be reliable and supersymmetric is somewhat weaker than the expectation from field theory. We also discuss similar issues for theories with $k=0$.

Boundaries and Defects of N=4 SYM with 4 Supercharges, Part I: Boundary/Junction Conditions

We consider ${\cal N}=4$ supersymmetric Yang Mills theory on a space with supersymmetry preserving boundary conditions. The boundaries preserving half of the 16 supercharges were analyzed and classified in an earlier work by Gaiotto and Witten. We extend that analysis to the case with fewer supersymmetries, concentrating mainly on the case preserving one quarter. We develop tools necessary to explicitly construct boundary conditions which can be viewed as taking the zero slope limit of a system of D3 branes intersecting and ending on a collection of NS5 and D5 branes oriented to preserve the appropriate number of supersymmetries. We analyze how these boundary conditions constrain the bulk degrees of freedom and enumerate the unconstrained degrees of freedom from the boundary/defect field theory point of view. The key ingredients used in the analysis are a generalized version of Nahm's equations and the explicit boundary/interface conditions for the NS5-like and D5-like impurities and boundaries, which we construct and describe in detail. Some bulk degrees of freedom suggested by the naive brane diagram considerations are lifted.

Boundaries and Defects of N=4 SYM with 4 Supercharges, Part II: Brane Constructions and 3d N=2 Field Theories

We study the vacuum moduli spaces of 3d N=2 supersymmetric quantum field theories by applying the formalism developed in our previous paper arXiv:1404.5527. The 3d theories can be realized by branes in type IIB string theory, which in a decoupling limit reduce to 4d N=4 super-Yang-Mills theory on an interval with BPS defects inserted. The moduli space of a given 3d theory is obtained by solving a generalization of Nahm's equations with appropriate boundary/junction conditions, along with help from the S-duality of type IIB string theory. Our classical computations reproduce many known results about the quantum-corrected moduli spaces of 3d theories, e.g. U(N_c) theories with N_f flavors with mass and FI parameters turned on. In particular, our methods give first-principles derivations of several results in the literature, including the s-rule, quantum splitting of classical Coulomb branches, the lifting of the Coulomb branch by non-Abelian instantons, quantum merging of Coulomb and Higgs branches, and phase transitions from re-ordering 5-branes.

Solitons on intersecting 3-branes

We consider a system consisting of a pair of D3 branes intersecting each other along a line such that half of the 16 supersymmetries are preserved. We then study the existence of magnetic monopole solutions corresponding to a D1-brane suspended between these D3 branes. We consider this problem in the zero slope limit where the tilt of the D3-branes is encoded in the uniform gradient of the adjoint scalar field. Such a system is closely related to the non-abelian flux background considered originally by van Baal. We provide three arguments supporting the existence of a single magnetic monopole solution. We also comment on the relation between our construction and a recent work by Mintun, Polchinski, and Sun.

Solitons on intersecting 3-Branes II: a holographic perspective

We study the low energy effective theory of two sets of D3-branes overlapping in 1+1 dimensions, recently considered by Mintun, Polchinski, and Sun. In the original treatment by MPS, by studying the properties of magnetic solitons, the low energy effective field theory was found to require some ultraviolet completion, possibly involving full string dynamics. Recently in a companion paper, it was shown that by scaling the angle between the D3-branes and the D3'-branes in the zero slope limit in specific way, one can find simpler effective field theory which consists of a single tower of Regge trajectory states and yet is ultraviolet complete and non-singular. In this article, we study this model by further studying a limit which recovers the MPS dynamics from this non-singular construction. We approach this issue from a holographic perspective, where we consider a stack of $N$ D3-branes overlapping with a single D3'-brane, and treat that D3'-brane as a probe in the $AdS_5 \times S^5$ dual. In general, the D3'-brane probe supports a magnetic monopole as a non-singular soliton configuration, but in the limit where the MPS dynamics is recovered, the soliton degenerates. This is consistent with the idea that the effective dynamics in the MPS setup is incomplete, but that it can be completed with a single tower of Regge trajectory states.

Gravity dual of dynamically broken supersymmetry

We study a renormalization group flow of ABJM theory embedded into the warped A_8 geometry and explore the dependence of the vacuum structure on the parameters of the theory. This model has a product group gauge structure U(N)xU(n+l) and comes equipped with discrete parameters N, l and k, a continuous parameter b related to the ratio of the Yang-Mills coupling for the two gauge groups, and one dimensionful parameter gYM^2 setting the overall scale. A supersymmetric supergravity solution exists when Q=N-l(l-k)/2k-k/24 is positive and is interpretable as a RG flow from a Yang-Mills like UV fixed point to a superconformal IR fixed point with free energy of order Q^3/2. The fate of the theory when Q is taken to be negative is less clear. We explore the structure of the possible gravity solution for small negative Q by considering the linearized gravitational back reaction from adding a small number of anti-branes on the Q=0 background. Following the work of Bena, et.al., we find that a sensible solution satisfying appropriate boundary conditions does not appear to exist. This leaves the status of the RG flow for the Q<0 theories a mystery. We offer the following speculative resolution to the puzzle: the -k/24 unit of charge induced by the curvature correction to supergravity should be considered an allowed physical object, and one should be adding an anti brane not to the Q=0 background but rather the Q=-k/24 background. Such a solution has a repulson singularity, and gives rise to a picture of the vacuum configuration where a cluster of anti-branes are floating around the repulson singularity, but are stabilized from being pushed off to infinity by other fluxes. Such a state is non-supersymmetric and appears to describe a vacuum with dynamical breaking of supersymmetry. Based on these considerations, we construct a phase diagram for this theory exhibiting various interesting regions.

Strange Metals in One Spatial Dimension

We consider 1+1 dimensional SU(N) gauge theory coupled to a multiplet of massive Dirac fermions transforming in the adjoint representation of the gauge group. The only global symmetry of this theory is a U(1) associated with the conserved Dirac fermion number, and we study the theory at variable, non-zero densities. The high density limit is characterized by a deconfined Fermi surface state with Fermi wavevector equal to that of free gauge-charged fermions. Its low energy fluctuations are described by a coset conformal field theory with central charge c=(N^2-1)/3 and an emergent N=(2,2) supersymmetry: the U(1) fermion number symmetry becomes an R-symmetry. We determine the exact scaling dimensions of the operators associated with Friedel oscillations and pairing correlations. For N>2, we find that the symmetries allow relevant perturbations to this state. We discuss aspects of the N->infty limit, and its possible dual description in AdS3 involving string theory or higher-spin gauge theory. We also discuss the low density limit of the theory by computing the low lying bound state spectrum of the large N gauge theory numerically at zero density, using discretized light cone quantization.

Supergravity Solution of Intersecting Branes and AdS/CFT with Flavor

We construct the supergravity solution for fully localized D2/D6 intersection. The near horizon limit of this solution is the supergravity dual of supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory in 2+1 dimensions with flavor. We use this solution to formulate mirror symmetry of 2+1 dimensional gauge theories in the language of AdS/CFT correspondence. We also construct the supergravity dual of a non-commutative gauge theory with fundamental matter.

Branes and fluxes in special holonomy manifolds and cascading field theories

We conduct a study of holographic RG flows whose UV is a theory in 2+1 dimensions decoupled from gravity, and the IR is the N=6,8 superconformal fixed point of ABJM. The solutions we consider are constructed by warping the M-theory background whose eight spatial dimensions are manifolds of special holonomies sp(1) times sp(1) and spin(7). Our main example for the spin(7) holonomy manifold is the A8 geometry originally constructed by Cvetic, Gibbons, Lu, and Pope. On the gravity side, our constructions generalize the earlier construction of RG flow where the UV was N=3 Yang-Mills-Chern-Simons matter system and are simpler in a number of ways. Through careful consideration of Page, Maxwell, and brane charges, we identify the discrete and continuous parameters characterizing each system. We then determine the range of the discrete data, corresponding to the flux/rank for which the supersymmetry is unbroken, and estimate the dynamical supersymmetry breaking scale as a function of these data. We then point out the similarity between the physics of supersymmetry breaking between our system and the system considered by Maldacena and Nastase. We also describe the condition for unbroken supersymmetry on class of construction based on a different class of spin(7) manifolds known as B8 spaces whose IR is different from that of ABJM and exhibit some interesting features.

Comments on domain walls in holographic duals of mass deformed conformal field theories

We consider M-theory backgrounds which are gravity duals of mass deformed superconformal field theories in 2+1 dimensions. The specific examples we consider are the B_8, Stenzel, and the Lin-Lunin-Maldacena geometries. These geometries contain compact 4-cycles on which one can wrap an M5-brane to create an object which behaves effectively like a domain wall in 2+1 dimensions. We review the quantization of flux and charges of these M-theory backgrounds, and confirm that the back reaction of the domain wall shifts the charges in a manner consistent with these quantization conditions, paying particular attention to various subtle half integer shifts of the charge lattice which arise as a part of the complete story. We also describe a configuration of a stationary, merging M2/anti M2 pair in the Lin-Lunin-Maldacena background, which can also be interpreted as a domain wall, and compare its basic properties with the expectations from its field theory description.

Quantization of charges and fluxes in warped Stenzel geometry

We examine the quantization of fluxes for the warped Stiefel cone and Stenzel geometries and their orbifolds, and distinguish the roles of three related notions of charge: Page, Maxwell, and brane. The orbifolds admit discrete torsion, and we describe the associated quantum numbers which are consistent with the geometry in its large radius and small radius limits from both the type IIA and the M-theory perspectives. The discrete torsion, measured by a Page charge, is related to the number of fractional branes. We relate the shifts in the Page charges under large gauge transformations to the Hanany-Witten brane creation effect.

D-brane Charges in Gravitational Duals of 2+1 Dimensional Gauge Theories and Duality Cascades

We perform a systematic analysis of the D-brane charges associated with string theory realizations of d=3 gauge theories, focusing on the examples of the N=4 supersymmetric U(N)xU(N+M) Yang-Mills theory and the N=3 supersymmetric U(N)xU(N+M) Yang-Mills-Chern-Simons theory. We use both the brane construction of these theories and their dual string theory backgrounds in the supergravity approximation. In the N=4 case we generalize the previously known gravitational duals to arbitrary values of the gauge couplings, and present a precise mapping between the gravity and field theory parameters. In the N=3 case, which (for some values of N and M) flows to an N=6 supersymmetric Chern-Simons-matter theory in the IR, we argue that the careful analysis of the charges leads to a shift in the value of the B-field in the IR solution by 1/2, in units where its periodicity is one, compared to previous claims. We also suggest that the N=3 theories may exhibit, for some values of N and M, duality cascades similar to those of the Klebanov-Strassler theory.

Mass-spin relation for quark anti-quark bound states in non-commutative Yang-Mills theory

We investigate the relationship between mass and spin of quark anti-quark bound state in non-commutative gauge theory with N=4 supersymmetry. In the large N and large 't Hooft coupling limit, these bound states correspond to rotating open strings ending on a D-brane embedded into the supergravity background dual of the non-commutative field theory. Although the physical configuration of the open strings are drastically deformed by the non-commutativity, we find that the relation between the energy and the angular momentum of the bound state is unaffected by the non-commutativity parameter. We also clarify the holographic interpretation of quark anti-quark potential in non-commutative gauge theories.

Non-commutative gauge theory on D-branes in Melvin Universes

Non-commutative gauge theory with a non-constant non-commutativity parameter can be formulated as a decoupling limit of open strings ending on D3-branes wrapping a Melvin universe. We construct the action explicitly and discuss various physical features of this theory. The decoupled field theory is not supersymmetric. Nonetheless, the Coulomb branch appears to remain flat at least in the large N and large 't Hooft coupling limit. We also find the analogue of Prasad-Sommerfield monopoles whose size scales with the non-commutativity parameter and is therefore position dependent.

Dualities, Twists, and Gauge Theories with Non-Constant Non-Commutativity

We study the world volume theory of D3-branes wrapping the Melvin universe supported by background NSNS B-field. In the appropriate decoupling limit, the open string dynamics is that of non-commutative guage field theory with non-constant non-commutativity. We identify this model as a simple Melvin twist of flat D3 branes. Along similar lines, one recognizes the model of Hashimoto and Sethi as being the Melvin null twist, and the model of Dolan and Nappi as being the null Melvin twist, of the flat D3-brane. This construction therefore offers a unified perspective on most of the known explicit constructions of non-commutative gauge theories as a decoupled theory of D-branes in a B-field background. We also describe the world volume theory on the D3-brane in Melvin universe which is decaying via the nucleation of monopole anti-monopole pair.

Correspondence Principle for Black Holes in Plane Waves

We compare the entropy as a function of energy of excited strings and black strings in an asymptotically plane wave background at the level of the correspondence principle. For the plane wave supported by the NSNS 3-form flux, neither the entropy formula nor the cross-over scale is affected by the presence of the flux and the correspondence is found to hold. For the plane wave supported by the RR 3-form flux, both the entropy and the cross-over point are modified, but the correspondence is still found to hold.

Observables of String Field Theory

We study gauge invariant operators of open string field theory and find a precise correspondence with on-shell closed strings. We provide a detailed proof of the gauge invariance of the operators and a heuristic interpretation of their correlation functions in terms of on-shell scattering amplitudes of closed strings. We also comment on the implications of these operators to vacuum string field theory.

Large branes in AdS and their field theory dual

Recently it was suggested that a graviton in $AdS_5 \times S^5$ with a large momentum along the sphere can blow up into a spherical D-brane in $S^5$. In this paper we show that the same graviton can also blow up into a spherical D-brane in $AdS_5$ with exactly the same quantum numbers (angular momentum and energy). These branes are BPS, preserving 16 of the 32 supersymmetries. We show that there is a BPS {\it classical} solution for SYM on $S^3\times R$ with exactly the same quantum numbers. The solution has non-vanishing Higgs expectation values and hence is dual to the large brane in AdS.

Can DLCQ test the Maldacena Conjecture?

We consider the Maldacena conjecture applied to the near horizon geometry of a D1-brane in the supergravity approximation and consider the possibility of testing the conjecture against the boundary field theory calculation using DLCQ. We propose the two point function of the stress energy tensor as a convenient quantity that may be computed on both sides of the correspondence. On the supergravity side, we may invoke the methods of Gubser, Klebanov, Polyakov, and Witten. On the field theory side, we derive an explicit expression for the two point function in terms of data that may be extracted from a DLCQ calculation at a given harmonic resolution. This gives rise to a well defined numerical algorithm for computing the two point function, which we test in the context of free fermions and the 't Hooft model. For the supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory with 16 supercharges that arises in the Maldacena conjecture, the algorithm is perfectly well defined, although the size of the numerical computation grows too fast to admit any detailed analysis at present, and our results are only preliminary. We are, however, able to present more detailed results on the supersymmetric DLCQ computation of the stress energy tensor correlators for two dimensional Yang Mills theories with (1,1) and (2,2) supersymmetries.

Holographic description of D3-branes in flat space

We describe a scheme for constructing the holographic dual of the full D3-brane geometry with charge $K$ by embedding it into a large anti-de Sitter space of size $N$. Such a geometry is realized in a multi-center anti-de Sitter geometry which admits a simple field theory interpretation as $SU(N+K)$ gauge theory broken to $SU(N) \times SU(K)$. We find that the characteristic size of the D3-brane geometry is of order $(K/N)^{1/4} U^0$ where $U^0$ is the scale of the Higgs. By choosing $N$ to be much larger than $K$, the scale of the D3-brane metric can be well separated from the Higgs scale in the radial coordinate. We generalize the holographic energy-distance relation and estimate the characteristic energy scale associated with these radial scales, and find that the $E/U$ relation becomes effectively $U$ independent in the range $(K/N)^{1/2} U^0 < U < U^0$. This implies that all detailed structure of the D3-brane geometry is encoded in the fine structure of the boundary gauge theory at around the Higgs scale.

Monopoles and Dyons in Non-Commutative Geometry

Taking advantage of the equivalence between supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory on non-commutative spaces and the field theory limit of D3-branes in the background of NSNS 2-form field, we investigate the static properties of magnetic monopoles and dyons using brane construction techniques. When parallel D3-branes are separated by turning on a Higgs vacuum expectation value, D-strings will stretch between them at an angle which depends on the value of the background 2-form potential. These states preserve half of the supersymmetries and have the same masses as their commutative counterparts in the field theory limit. We also find stable (p,q)-dyons and string junctions. We find that they do not preserve any supersymmetry but have the same masses as their commutative counterparts. In the field theory limit, the (p,q)-dyons and the string junctions restore 1/2 and 1/4 of the 16 supersymmetries, respectively.

The Shape of Branes Pulled by Strings

We examine the system where a string stretches between pair of D-branes, and study the bending of the D-brane caused by the tension of the string. If the distance between the pair of D-branes is sent to infinity, the tension of the string stretching between them is strong enough to pull the spike all the way to infinity. We study the shape of these spikes when the branes are finite distance apart using two different methods. First, we consider a string stretched between a pair of D2-branes in type IIA theory by going to the M-theory limit in which all of these branes are M-theory 2-branes embedded along a holomorphic curve. Second, we consider a D-string stretched between a pair of D3-branes in type IIB theory and infer the geometry of the D3-brane embeddings from the configuration of the adjoint scalar field in the magnetic monopole solution of Prasad and Sommerfield. The case of fundamental string stretching between a pair of D3-branes follows from S-duality. The energy of these configurations matches the expected value based on fundamental string and D-string tensions.

The Spectrum of a Large N Gauge Theory Near Transition from Confinement to Screening

We study the spectrum of 1+1 dimensional large $N$ QCD coupled to an adjoint Majorana fermion of mass $m$. As $m\to 0$ this model makes a transition from confinement to screening. We argue that in this limit the spectrum becomes continuous for mass greater than twice the mass of the lightest bound state. This critical mass is nothing but the threshold for a decay into two lightest states. We present numerical results based on DLCQ that appear to support our claim.

Decay of Excited D-branes

We calculate the leading order interactions of massless D-brane excitations. Their 4-point functions are found to be identical to those found in type I theory. The amplitude for two massless D-brane fluctuations to produce a massless closed string is found to possess interesting new structure. As a function of its single kinematic invariant, it displays an infinite sequence of alternating zeros and poles. At high transverse momenta, this amplitude decays exponentially, indicating a growing effective thickness of the D-brane. This amplitude is the leading process by which non-extremal D-branes produce Hawking radiation.

preprint1996arXiv

Scattering of Strings from D-branes

We review a number of perturbative calculations describing the interactions of D-branes with massless elementary string states. The form factors for the scattering of closed strings off D-branes are closely related to the Veneziano amplitude. They show that, in interactions with strings, D-branes acquire many of their physical features: the effective size of D-branes is of order the string scale and expands with the energy of the probe, while the fixed angle scattering amplitudes fall off exponentially. We also calculate the leading process responsible for the absorption of closed strings: the amplitude for a closed string to turn into a pair of open strings attached to the D-brane. The inverse of this process describes the Hawking radiation by an excited D-brane.
