Non-Gaussianity Detection of EEG Signals Based on a Multivariate Scale Mixture Model for Diagnosis of Epileptic Seizures

Objective: The detection of epileptic seizures from scalp electroencephalogram (EEG) signals can facilitate early diagnosis and treatment. Previous studies suggested that the Gaussianity of EEG distributions changes depending on the presence or absence of seizures; however, no general EEG signal models can explain such changes in distributions within a unified scheme. Methods: This paper describes the formulation of a stochastic EEG model based on a multivariate scale mixture distribution that can represent changes in non-Gaussianity caused by stochastic fluctuations in EEG. In addition, we propose an EEG analysis method by combining the model with a filter bank and introduce a feature representing the non-Gaussianity latent in each EEG frequency band. Results: We applied the proposed method to multichannel EEG data from twenty patients with focal epilepsy. The results showed a significant increase in the proposed feature during epileptic seizures, particularly in the high-frequency band. The feature calculated in the high-frequency band allowed highly accurate classification of seizure and non-seizure segments [area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) = 0.881] using only a simple threshold. Conclusion: This paper proposed a multivariate scale mixture distribution-based stochastic EEG model capable of representing non-Gaussianity associated with epileptic seizures. Experiments using simulated and real EEG data demonstrated the validity of the model and its applicability to epileptic seizure detection. Significance: The stochastic fluctuations of EEG quantified by the proposed model can help detect epileptic seizures with high accuracy.

Theory of anomalous optical properties of bulk Rashba conductor

The Rashba interaction induced when inversion symmetry is broken in solids is a key interaction connecting spin and charge for realizing novel magnetoelectric cross-correlation effects. Here, we theoretically explore the optical properties of a bulk Rashba conductor by calculating the transport coefficients at finite frequencies. It is demonstrated that the combination of direct and inverse Edelstein effects leads to a softening of the plasma frequency for the electric field perpendicular to the Rashba field, resulting in a hyperbolic electromagnetic metamaterial. In the presence of magnetization, a significant enhancement of anisotropic propagation (directional dichroism) is predicted because of interband transition edge singularity.Based on an effective Hamiltonian analysis, the dichroism is demonstrated to be driven by toroidal and quadratic moments of the magnetic Rashba system. The effective theory of the cross-correlation effects has the same mathematical structure as that of insulating multiferroics.

Theory of Electrical Spin Manipulation in Spin-Orbit Coupling Systems

By associating a spin-orbit interaction with a non-Abelian gauge potential, we theoretically present a spin polarization in a quite general form using an effective Yang-Mills field and a usual electromagnetic field. In this gauge invariant result, we focus on a purely electrically-induced spin contribution. We find that both the inverse spin galvanic effect and the spin Hall effect arise from the same origin, i.e., the SU(2)$\times$U(1) Hall effect. We also discover that a large effective magnetic field of the order of 1T is induced in the Rashba system.

Monopoles in ferromagnetic metals

The aim of this short review is to give an introduction to monopoles and to present theoretical derivation of two particular monopoles in ferromagnetic metals, a hedgehog monopole and a spin damping monopole. Spin damping monopoles can be generated in simple systems such as a junction of a ferromagnet and a heavy element with strong spin-orbit interaction such as Pt. This monopole is essential in coupling electronics with magnetism, and is thus expected to play an essential role in spintronics.

Spin Damping Monopole

We present theoretical evidence that a magnetic monopole emerges in dynamic magnetic systems in the presence of the spin-orbit interaction. The monopole field is expressed in terms of spin damping associated with magnetization dynamics. We demonstrate that the observation of this spin damping monopole is accomplished electrically using Ampere's law for monopole current. Our discovery suggests the integration of monopoles into electronics, namely, monopolotronics.

Topological charge pumping effect by the magnetization dynamics on the Surface of Three-Dimensional Topological Insulators

We discuss a current dynamics on the surface of a 3-dimensional topological insulator induced by magnetization precession of a ferromagnet attached. It is found that the magnetization dynamics generates a direct charge current when the precession axis is within the surface plane. This rectification effect is due to a quantum anomaly and is topologically protected. The robustness of the rectification effect against first-varying exchange field and impurities is confirmed by explicit calculation.

Spin Currents Induced by Nonuniform Rashba-Type Spin-Orbit Field

We study the spin relaxation torque in nonmagnetic or ferromagnetic metals with nonuniform spin-orbit coupling within the Keldysh Green's function formalism. In non-magnet, the relaxation torque is shown to arise when the spin-orbit coupling is not uniform. In the absence of an external field, the spin current induced by the relaxation torque is proportional to the vector chirality of Rashba-type spin-orbit field (RSOF). In the presence of an external field, on the other hand, spin relaxation torque arises from the coupling of the external field and vector chirality of RSOF. Our result indicates that spin-sink or source effects are controlled by designing RSOF in junctions.

Diffusive versus local spin currents in dynamic spin pumping systems

Using microscopic theory, we investigate the properties of a spin current driven by magnetization dynamics. In the limit of smooth magnetization texture, the dominant spin current induced by the spin pumping effect is shown to be the diffusive spin current, i.e., the one arising from only a diffusion associated with spin accumulation. That is to say, there is no effective field that locally drives the spin current. We also investigate the conversion mechanism of the pumped spin current into a charge current by spin-orbit interactions, specifically the inverse spin Hall effect. We show that the spin-charge conversion does not always occur and that it depends strongly on the type of spin-orbit interaction. In a Rashba spin-orbit system, the local part of the charge current is proportional to the spin relaxation torque, and the local spin current, which does not arise from the spin accumulation, does not play any role in the conversion. In contrast, the diffusive spin current contributes to the diffusive charge current. Alternatively, for spin-orbit interactions arising from random impurities, the local charge current is proportional to the local spin current that constitutes only a small fraction of the total spin current. Clearly, the dominant spin current (diffusive spin current) is not converted into a charge current. Therefore, the nature of the spin current is fundamentally different depending on its origin and thus the spin transport and the spin-charge conversion behavior need to be discussed together along with spin current generation.

Spin relaxation torque in metallic ferromagnets

Spin relaxation torque ${\cal T}$ in uniform metallic ferromagnets with the spin-orbit interaction arising from random impurities is calculated microscopically. ${\cal T}$ is shown to be written by spatial derivatives of the electric field, but is not always given as a divergence of a torque dipole density. The result is due to the fast dissipation of the orbital angular momentum, and thus a conserving spin current cannot be defined. It is discussed that the $β$ term in the spin transfer torque can also be asymmetric.

Theory of spin transport induced by the temperature gradient

Spin transport driven by the temperature gradient in ferromagnetic metals is studied based on a microscopic theory. It is shown that the temperature gradient works as an effective field equivalent to the electric field as for both the spin current generation and the spin relaxation torque. The thermally driven contribution of the spin current and the relaxation torque are thus proportional to $\nabla T$ and $\nabla^2 T$, respectively.

Perturbation theory of the dynamic inverse spin Hall effect with charge conservation

We present gauge-invariant theory of the dynamic inverse spin Hall effect driven by the spin--orbit interaction in metallic systems. Charge conservation is imposed diagrammatically by including vertex corrections. We show the charge current is induced by an effective electric field that is proportional to the spin current pumped by the magnetization dynamics. The result is consistent with recent experiments.
