A study of a Fuchsian system of rank 8 in 3 variables and the ordinary differential equations as its restrictions

A Fuchsian system of rank 8 in 3 variables with 4 parameters is presented. The singular locus consists of six planes and a cubic surface. The restriction of the system onto the intersection of two singular planes is an ordinary differential equation of order four with three singular points. A middle convolution of this equation turns out to be the tensor product of two Gauss hypergeometric equation, and another middle convolution sends this equation to the Dotsenko-Fateev equation. Local solutions to these ordinary differential equations are found. Their coefficients are sums of products of the Gamma functions. These sums can be expressed as special values of the generalized hypergeometric series $_4F_3$ at 1. Keywords: Fuchsian differential equation, hypergeometric differential equation, middle convolution, Dotsenko-Fateev equation, recurrence formula, series solution

Special values of Gauss's hypergeometric series derived from Appell's series $F_1$ with closed forms

In a previous work ([Eb]), the author proposed a method employing contiguity relations to derive hypergeometric series in closed form. In [Eb], this method was used to derive Gauss's hypergeometric series $_2F_1$ possessing closed forms. Here, we consider the application of this method to Appell's hypergeometetric series $F_1$ and derive several $F_1$ possessing closed forms. Moreover, analyzing these $F_1$, we obtain values of $_2F_1$ with no free parameters. Some of these results provide new examples of algebraic values of $_2F_1$. Key Words and Phrases: Gauss's hypergeometric series, algebraic value, Appell's hypergeometric series, hypergeometric identity.

Special values of the hypergeometric series

In this paper, we present a new method for finding identities for hypergeoemtric series, such as the (Gauss) hypergeometric series, the generalized hypergeometric series and the Appell-Lauricella hypergeometric series. Furthermore, using this method, we get identities for the hypergeometric series $F(a,b;c;x)$; we show that values of $F(a,b;c;x)$ at some points $x$ can be expressed in terms of gamma functions, together with certain elementary functions. We tabulate the values of $F(a,b;c;x)$ that can be obtained with this method. We find that this set includes almost all previously known values and many previously unknown values. Key Words and Phrases: hypergeometric series, three term relation, special value, solving polynomial systems.

On a strange evaluation of the hypergeometric series by Gosper

In a series of letters to D.Stanton, R.W.Gosper presented many strange evaluations of hypergeometric series. Recently, we rediscovered one of the strange hypergeometric identities appearing in [Go]. In this paper, we prove this identity and derive its generalization using contiguity operators. Key Words and Phrases: hypergeometric series, strange evaluation, contiguity operator. 2010 Mathematics Subject Classification Numbers: 33C05.

Some special values of hypergeometric series related to central values of automorphic $L$-functions

In a recent work, H.Narita presented problems concerning the strict positivity of central values of certain automorphic $L$-functions in the form of questions regarding special values of the hypergeometric series. In this paper, we present partial answers to these questions using the theory of orthogonal polynomials and three term relations of the hypergeometric series.

An approximation of a catenoid constructed from piecewise truncated conical minimal surfaces

We consider an appoximation of a catenoid constructed from "odd" truncated cones that maintains minimality in a certain sense. Thorough this procedure, we obtain a discrete curve approximating a catenary by exploiting the fact that it is the function that generates a catenoid. In this investigation, the theory of the Gauss hypergeomtric functions plays an important role. This work is a sequel to [Y.Machigashira, Piecewise truncated conical minimal surfaces and the Gauss hypergeometric functions, Journal of Math-for-Industry 4(2012), pp. 25-33 ]. The paper covers an appoximation of a catenoid constructed from "even" truncated cones that maintains minimality in the same sense. Keywords: catenary, catenoid, truncated cone, hypergeomtric function, Chebyshev polynomial of the third kind.

Apparent singular points of factors of reducible generalized hypergeometric equations

We consider a reducible generalized hypergeometric equation, whose sub-equation possesses apparent singular points. We determine the polynomial whose roots are these points. We show that this polynomial is a generalized hypergeometric polynomial. Key Words and Phrases. the generalized hypergeometric equation, reducible, apparent singular point, minor of Wronskian.
