Convergence rate of alternating projection method for the intersection of an affine subspace and the second-order cone

We study the convergence rate of the alternating projection method (APM) applied to the intersection of an affine subspace and the second-order cone. We show that when they intersect non-transversally, the convergence rate is $O(k^{-1/2})$, where $k$ is the number of iterations of the APM. In particular, when the intersection is not at the origin or forms a half-line with the origin as the endpoint, the obtained convergence rate can be exact because a lower bound of the convergence rate is evaluated. These results coincide with the worst-case convergence rate obtained from the error bound discussed in [Borwein et al., SIOPT, 2014] and [Drusvyatskiy et al., Math. Prog., 2017]. Moreover, we consider the convergence rate of the APM for the intersection of an affine subspace and the product of two second-order cones. We provide an example that the worst-case convergence rate of the APM is better than the rate expected from the error bound for the example.

A study of a Fuchsian system of rank 8 in 3 variables and the ordinary differential equations as its restrictions

A Fuchsian system of rank 8 in 3 variables with 4 parameters is presented. The singular locus consists of six planes and a cubic surface. The restriction of the system onto the intersection of two singular planes is an ordinary differential equation of order four with three singular points. A middle convolution of this equation turns out to be the tensor product of two Gauss hypergeometric equation, and another middle convolution sends this equation to the Dotsenko-Fateev equation. Local solutions to these ordinary differential equations are found. Their coefficients are sums of products of the Gamma functions. These sums can be expressed as special values of the generalized hypergeometric series $_4F_3$ at 1. Keywords: Fuchsian differential equation, hypergeometric differential equation, middle convolution, Dotsenko-Fateev equation, recurrence formula, series solution

Zeta functions of periodic cubical lattices and cyclotomic-like polynomials

Zeta functions of periodic cubical lattices are explicitly derived by computing all the eigenvalues of the adjacency operators and their characteristic polynomials. We introduce cyclotomic-like polynomials to give factorization of the zeta function in terms of them and count the number of orbits of the Galois action associated with each cyclotomic-like polynomial to obtain its further factorization. We also give a necessary and sufficient condition for such a polynomial to be irreducible and discuss its irreducibility from this point of view.

A concise parametrisation of affine transformation

Good parametrisations of affine transformations are essential to interpolation, deformation, and analysis of shape, motion, and animation. It has been one of the central research topics in computer graphics. However, there is no single perfect method and each one has both advantages and disadvantages. In this paper, we propose a novel parametrisation of affine transformations, which is a generalisation to or an improvement of existing methods. Our method adds yet another choice to the existing toolbox and shows better performance in some applications. A C++ implementation is available to make our framework ready to use in various applications.

Anti-commutative Dual Complex Numbers and 2D Rigid Transformation

We introduce a new presentation of the two dimensional rigid transformation which is more concise and efficient than the standard matrix presentation. By modifying the ordinary dual number construction for the complex numbers, we define the ring of the anti-commutative dual complex numbers, which parametrizes two dimensional rotation and translation all together. With this presentation, one can easily interpolate or blend two or more rigid transformations at a low computational cost. We developed a library for C++ with the MIT-licensed source code and demonstrate its facility by an interactive deformation tool developed for iPad.

Eigenvalue problem for some special class of anti-triangular matrices

We study the eigenvalue problem for some special class of anti-triangular matrices. Though the eigenvalue problem is quite classical, as far as we know, almost nothing is known about properties of eigenvalues for anti-triangular matrices. In this paper, we show that there is a nice class of anti-triangular matrices whose eigenvalues are given explicitly by their elements. Moreover, this class contains several interesting subclasses which we characterize in terms of probability measures. We also discuss the application of our main theorem to the study of interacting particle systems, which are stochastic processes studied in extensive literature.

Dualities for absolute zeta functions and multiple gamma functions

We study absolute zeta functions from the view point of a canonical normalization. We introduce the absolute Hurwitz zeta function for the normalization. In particular, we show that the theory of multiple gamma and sine functions gives good normalizations in cases related to the Kurokawa tensor product. In these cases, the functional equation of the absolute zeta function turns out to be equivalent to the simplicity of the associated non-classical multiple sine function of negative degree.

On orbits in double flag varieties for symmetric pairs

Let $ G $ be a connected, simply connected semisimple algebraic group over the complex number field, and let $ K $ be the fixed point subgroup of an involutive automorphism of $ G $ so that $ (G, K) $ is a symmetric pair. We take parabolic subgroups $ P $ of $ G $ and $ Q $ of $ K $ respectively and consider the product of partial flag varieties $ G/P $ and $ K/Q $ with diagonal $ K $-action, which we call a \emph{double flag variety for symmetric pair}. It is said to be \emph{of finite type} if there are only finitely many $ K $-orbits on it. In this paper, we give a parametrization of $ K $-orbits on $ G/P \times K/Q $ in terms of quotient spaces of unipotent groups without assuming the finiteness of orbits. If one of $ P \subset G $ or $ Q \subset K $ is a Borel subgroup, the finiteness of orbits is closely related to spherical actions. In such cases, we give a complete classification of double flag varieties of finite type, namely, we obtain classifications of $ K $-spherical flag varieties $ G/P $ and $ G $-spherical homogeneous spaces $ G/Q $.

Closed orbits on partial flag varieties and double flag variety of finite type

Let $ G $ be a connected reductive algebraic group over $ \C $. We denote by $ K = (G^θ)_{0} $ the identity component of the fixed points of an involutive automorphism $ θ$ of $ G $. The pair $ (G, K) $ is called a symmetric pair. Let $Q$ be a parabolic subgroup of $K$. We want to find a pair of parabolic subgroups $P_{1}$, $P_{2}$ of $G$ such that (i) $P_{1} \cap P_{2} = Q$ and (ii) $P_{1} P_{2}$ is dense in $G$. The main result of this article states that, for a simple group $G$, we can find such a pair if and only if $(G, K)$ is a Hermitian symmetric pair. The conditions (i) and (ii) yield to conclude that the $K$-orbit through the origin $(e P_{1}, e P_{2})$ of $G/P_{1} \times G/P_{2}$ is closed and it generates an open dense $G$-orbit on the product of partial flag variety. From this point of view, we also give a complete classification of closed $K$-orbits on $G/P_{1} \times G/P_{2}$.

Double flag varieties for a symmetric pair and finiteness of orbits

Let G be a reductive algebraic group over the complex number filed, and K = G^θ be the fixed points of an involutive automorphism θof G so that (G, K) is a symmetric pair. We take parabolic subgroups P and Q of G and K respectively and consider a product of partial flag varieties G/P and K/Q with diagonal K-action. The double flag variety G/P \times K/Q thus obtained is said to be of finite type if there are finitely many K-orbits on it. A triple flag variety G/P^1 \times G/P^2 \times G/P^3 is a special case of our double flag varieties, and there are many interesting works on the triple flag varieties. In this paper, we study double flag varieties G/P \times K/Q of finite type. We give efficient criterion under which the double flag variety is of finite type. The finiteness of orbits is strongly related to spherical actions of G or K. For example, we show a partial flag variety G/P is K-spherical if a product of partial flag varieties G/P \times G/θ(P) is G-spherical. We also give many examples of the double flag varieties of finite type, and for type AIII, we give a classification when P = B is a Borel subgroup of G.

Theta lifting of nilpotent orbits for symmetric pairs

We consider a reductive dual pair (G, G') in the stable range with G' the smaller member and of Hermitian symmetric type. We study the theta lifting of nilpotent K'_C-orbits, where K' is a maximal compact subgroup of G' and we describe the precise K_C-module structure of the regular function ring of the closure of the lifted nilpotent orbit of the symmetric pair (G, K). As an application, we prove sphericality and normality of the closure of certain nilpotent K_C-orbits obtained in this way. We also give integral formulas for their degrees.
