Continuously tuning the refractive indices by restructuring materials on the 20-1000 atoms scale: improving anti-reflection coating designs

We demonstrate the capability of block-copolymer templating to tune the refractive indices of functional oxides over a broad range by structuring materials on the 20-1000 atoms scale, with simple one-pot synthesis. The presented method is then combined with genetic algorithm-based optimization to explore its application for anti-reflection coating design. Merging these techniques allows for the realization of a minimal two-layer anti-reflection stack for silicon with broadband reflectivity of just 3% from the nominal value of 38%, over a 120° angular span, validated by fabrication followed by optical measurements.

Sub-cm Resolution Distributed Fiber Optic Hydrogen Sensing with Nano-Engineered TiO2

The 3D nano-structuring on the <10nm scale allows the refractive index of functional sensory materials(n>2) to be reduced and matched with the cladding of optical fiber(n~1.46) for low-loss integration. A high temperature capable hydrogen sensor composed of D-shaped optical fiber with palladium nanoparticles infused nanoporous (~5nm) TiO2 film is demonstrated. The behavior of the developed sensor was characterized by examining the wavelength of an incorporated Fiber Bragg Grating and by observing the transmission losses at temperatures up to 700C. In addition, with frequency domain reflectometry the distributed sensing potential of the developed sensor for hydrogen concentrations of up to 10% is examined. The results show the possibility of detecting chemical gradients with sub-cm resolution at very high temperatures(>500C).

The optical applications of 3D sub-wavelength block-copolymer nanostructured functional materials

A method to engineer the refractive indices of functional materials (TiO2, ZnO, SnO2, SiO2), by nanostructuring in the deep sub-wavelength regime (<20nm), is presented. Block-copolymer templating combined with a wet processing route is used to realize 3D functional nanostructures with continuously adjustable refractive indices from 1.17 to 2.2. Wet processing accessed refractive index engineering can be applied to address a variety of realizability concerns in attaining design specified refractive index values and refractive index gradients in 1D, 2D, and 3D that arise as the results of optical design techniques such as thin film optimization methods, transformation optics and conformal mapping. Refractive index optimized multi-layer anti-reflection coatings on crystalline silicon, which reduce light reflections from 38% down to ~3% with a wide angular span, are demonstrated with the developed wet processing route. A high temperature oxygen free fiber optic hydrogen sensor realized by accessing nano-engineering enabled refractive indices is also presented. The functionality of the sensor is characterized with a fiber Bragg grating, transmission based interrogation, and optical frequency domain reflectometry. The latter demonstrates the potential of the developed sensor for the detection of chemical gradients for applications such as in high temperature hydrogen driven fuel cells.
