Non-SUSY DW's in ISO(7) gauged supergravity

We consider 4D maximal $\mathrm{ISO}(7)$ gauged supergravity, which is known to arise from a consistent truncation of massive IIA supergravity on a six-sphere. Within its $\mathrm{SU}(3)$ invariant sector, the theory is known to possess eight AdS vacua, preserving various amounts of residual supersymmetry and bosonic symmetry. By making use of fake supergravity and the Hamilton-Jacobi formalism, we find novel non-supersymmetric domain walls (DW) interpolating between different pairs of AdS extrema. We conclude by discussing some holographically relevant quantities such as the free energy and the anomalous dimensions of the operators triggering the dual RG flows.

Bubble instability of mIIA on $\mathrm{AdS}_4\times S^6$

We consider compactifications of massive IIA supergravity on a six-sphere. This setup is known to give rise to non-supersymmetric AdS$_4$ vacua preserving SO$(7)$ as well as G$_2$ residual symmetry. Both solutions have a round $S^6$ metric and are supported by the Romans' mass and internal $F_6$ flux. While the SO$(7)$ invariant vacuum is known to be perturbatively unstable, the G$_2$ invariant one has been found to have a fully stable Kaluza-Klein spectrum. Moreover, it has been shown to be protected against brane-jet instabilities. Motivated by these results, we study possible bubbling solutions connected to the G$_2$ vacuum, representing non-perturbative instabilities of the latter. We indeed find an instability channel represented by the nucleation of a bubble of nothing dressed up with a homogeneous D2 brane charge distribution in the internal space. Our solution generalizes to the case where $S^6$ is replaced by any six-dimensional nearly-Kähler manifold.

Positive energy and non-SUSY flows in ISO(7) gauged supergravity

We consider maximal gauged supergravity in 4D with ISO(7) gauge group, which arises from a consistent truncation of massive IIA supergravity on a six-sphere. Within its G$_2$ invariant sector, the theory is known to possess a supersymmetric AdS extremum as well as two non-supersymmetric ones. In this context we provide a first order formulation of the theory by making use of the Hamilton-Jacobi (HJ) formalism. This allows us to derive a positive energy theorem for both non-supersymmetric extrema. Subsequently, we also find novel non-supersymmetric domain walls (DW) interpolating between the supersymmetric extremum and each of the other two. Finally, we discuss a perturbative HJ technique that may be used in order to solve for curved DW geometries.

AdS$_3$ from M-branes at conical singularities

M-theory is known to possess supersymmetric solutions where the geometry is $\mathrm{AdS}_3\times S^3\times S^3$ warped over a Riemann surface $Σ_{2}$. The simplest examples in this class can be engineered by placing M2 and M5 branes as defects inside of a stack of background M5 branes. In this paper we show that a generalization of this construction yields more general solutions in the aforementioned class. The background branes are now M5's carrying M2 brane charge, while the defect branes are now placed at the origin of a flat hyperplane with a conical defect. The equations of motion imply a relation between the deficit angle produced by the conical defect and the M2 charge carried by the background branes.

Holographic Description of M-branes via AdS$_2$

We study $\textrm{AdS}_2\times S^4 \times S^2 \times Σ_2$ solutions in type IIB string theory arising from D1 -- D3 -- NS5 brane intersections. These backgrounds enjoy sixteen supercharges and the corresponding internal geometry is non-compact due to the specific form of the warping w.r.t. the Riemann surface $Σ_2$. Even though a direct computation of the holographic free energy of the would-be dual CFT$_1$ yields a divergent behaviour, it reveals the typical $N^3$ scaling of a 6d theory upon introducing a hard cut-off. We claim that such geometries may be interpreted as the gravity duals of M(atrix) models describing an IR phase of the $(2,0)$ theory of M5 branes, in presence of momentum and NUT charges. We discuss parallel $\textrm{AdS}_2$ geometries describing longitudinal M2 branes in the UV, where the counting of the number of degrees of freedom correctly reproduces the expected $N^{3/2}$ behaviour of the dual field theory. These geometries provide explicit examples where deconstructed extra dimensions yield well-defined UV descriptions in terms of higher-dimensional CFTs.

New accelerating solutions in late-time cosmology

Dark energy models can be seen as dynamical systems. In this paper we show that multi-field models with a curved field space give rise to new critical points and we analyse their stability. These are new accelerating solutions in late-time cosmology which exist even for steep potentials. This opens up the possibility to realise quintessence models even when quantum corrections spoil the flatness of the underlying potential. These non-linear sigma models arise naturally in supergravity and string models where their multi-field dynamics can help to avoid swampland bounds.

Nothing really matters

We study non-perturbative instabilities of AdS spacetime in General Relativity with a cosmological constant in arbitrary dimensions. In this simple setup we explicitly construct a class of gravitational instantons generalizing Witten's bubble of nothing. We calculate the corresponding Euclidean action and show that its change is finite. The expansion of these bubbles is described by a lower-dimensional de Sitter geometry within a non-compact foliation of the background spacetime. Moreover we discuss the existence of covariantly constant spinors as a possible topological obstruction for such decays to occur. This mechanism is further connected to the stability of supersymmetric vacua in string theory.

6D (1,1) Gauged Supergravities from Orientifold Compactifications

We study dimensional reductions of M-theory/type II strings down to 6D in the presence of fluxes and spacetime filling branes and orientifold planes of different types. We classify all inequivalent orientifold projections giving rise to $\mathcal{N}=(1,1)$ supergravities in 6D and work out the embedding tensor/fluxes dictionary for each of those. Finally we analyze the set of vacua for the different classes of reductions and find an abundance of "no-scale" type Minkowski vacua, as well as a few novel examples of (A)dS extrema.

A new 6d fixed point from holography

We propose a stringy construction giving rise to a class of interacting and non-supersymmetric CFT's in six dimensions. Such theories may be obtained as an IR conformal fixed point of an RG flow ending up in a $(1, 0)$ theory in the UV. We provide the due holographic evidence in the context of massive type IIA on $\textrm {AdS}_{7}\times M_3$, where $M_3$ is topologically an $S^3$. In particular, in this paper we present a 10d flow solution which may be interpreted as a non-BPS bound state of NS5, D6 and $\overline{\textrm{D6}}$ branes. Moreover, by adopting its 7d effective description, we are able to holographically compute the free energy and the operator spectrum in the novel IR conformal fixed point.

All gaugings and stable de Sitter in D=7 half-maximal supergravity

We study the general formulation of gauged supergravity in seven dimensions with sixteen supercharges keeping duality covariance by means of the embedding tensor formalism. We first classify all inequivalent duality orbits of consistent deformations. Secondly, we analyse the complete set of critical points in a systematic way. Interestingly, we find the first examples of stable de Sitter solutions within a theory with such a large amount of supersymmetry.

Geometric non-geometry

We consider a class of (orbifolds of) M-theory compactifications on $S^{d} \times T^{7-d}$ with gauge fluxes yielding minimally supersymmetric STU-models in 4D. We present a group-theoretical derivation of the corresponding flux-induced superpotentials and argue that the aforementioned backgrounds provide a (globally) geometric origin for 4D theories that only look locally geometric from the perspective of twisted tori. In particular, we show that Q-flux can be used to generate compactifications on $S^{4} \times T^{3}$. We thus conclude that the effect of turning on non-geometric fluxes, at least when the section condition is solved, may be recovered by considering reductions on different topologies other than toroidal.

Type IIB on $S^{3}\times S^{3}$ through $Q$ & $P$ fluxes

We study a class of orientifold compactifications of type IIB supergravity with fluxes down to 4D in connection with truncations of half-maximal gauged supergravities yielding isotropic STU-models with minimal supersymmetry. In this context, we make use of a group-theoretical approach in order to derive flux-induced superpotentials for different IIB backgrounds. We first review the toroidal case yielding GKP-like superpotentials characterised by their \emph{no-scale} behaviour. We then turn to $S^{3} \times S^{3}$ and $S^{3} \times \mathbb{T}^{3}$, which, surprisingly, give rise to effective descriptions of non-geometric $Q$- and $P$-fluxes through globally geometric non-toroidal compactifications. As a consequence, such constructions break the no-scale symmetry without invoking any non-perturbative effects.

A note on smeared branes in flux vacua and gauged supergravity

In the known examples of flux vacua with calibrated spacetime-filling sources (branes or orientifold planes), one can smear the source in order to perform a standard KK reduction and obtain a lower-dimensional supergravity description. Furthermore, it is expected that the smeared and localized solution preserve equal amounts of supersymmetry. In this note we point out that the $\mathrm{AdS}_7$ solution discussed in arXiv:1111.2605 and arXiv:1309.2949 is a counterexample to this common lore. The solution is supersymmetric when the spacetime-filling D6-branes are localized but breaks supersymmetry in the smeared limit. By using the embedding tensor formalism we demonstrate that there is no gauged supergravity description for the solution, regardless of the source being smeared or not. We conjecture that for flux solutions with separation between the KK scale and the AdS radius this cannot occur.

An alternative to anti-branes and O-planes?

In this paper we consider type IIA compactifications in the isotropic Z2 x Z2 orbifold with a flux-induced perturbative superpotential combined with non-perturbative effects. Without requiring the presence of O-planes, and simply having D6-branes as local sources, we demonstrate the existence of de Sitter (dS) critical points, where the non-perturbative contributions to the cosmological constant have negligible size. We note, however, that these solutions generically have tachyons. By means of a more systematic search, we are able to find two examples of stable dS vacua with no need for anti-branes or O-planes, which, however, exhibit important non-perturbative corrections. The examples that we present turn out to remain stable even after opening up the fourteen non-isotropic moduli.

Lobotomy of Flux Compactifications

We provide the dictionary between four-dimensional gauged supergravity and type II compactifications on $\mathbb{T}^6$ with metric and gauge fluxes in the absence of supersymmetry breaking sources, such as branes and orientifold planes. Secondly, we prove that there is a unique isotropic compactification allowing for critical points. It corresponds to a type IIA background given by a product of two 3-tori with SO(3) twists and results in a unique theory (gauging) with a non-semisimple gauge algebra. Besides the known four AdS solutions surviving the orientifold projection to $\mathcal{N}=4$ induced by O6-planes, this theory contains a novel AdS solution that requires non-trivial orientifold-odd fluxes, hence being a genuine critical point of the $\mathcal{N}=8$ theory.

Accelerated Universes from type IIA Compactifications

We study slow-roll accelerating cosmologies arising from geometric compactifications of type IIA string theory on $T^{6}/(\mathbb{Z}_{2}\,\times\,\mathbb{Z}_{2})$. With the aid of a genetic algorithm, we are able to find quasi-de Sitter backgrounds with both slow-roll parameters of order $0.1$. Furthermore, we study their evolution by numerically solving the corresponding time-dependent equations of motion, and we show that they actually display a few e-folds of accelerated expansion. Finally, we comment on their perturbative reliability.

Fully stable dS vacua from generalised fluxes

We investigate the possible existence of (meta-)stable de Sitter vacua within N=1 compactifications with generalised fluxes. With the aid of an algorithm inspired by the method of differential evolution, we were able to find three novel examples of completely tachyon-free de Sitter extrema in a non-isotropic type IIB model with non-geometric fluxes. We also analyse the surroundings of the aforementioned points in parameter space and chart the corresponding stability regions. These happen to occur at small values of the cosmological constant compared to the AdS scale.

On the distribution of stable de Sitter vacua

The possible existence of (meta-) stable de Sitter vacua in string theory is of fundamental importance. So far, there are no fully stable solutions where all effects are under perturbative control. In this paper we investigate the presence of stable de Sitter vacua in type II string theory with non-geometric fluxes. We introduce a systematic method for solving the equations of motion at the origin of moduli space, by expressing the fluxes in terms of the supersymmetry breaking parameters. As a particular example, we revisit the geometric type IIA compactifications, and argue that non-geometric fluxes are necessary to have (isotropically) stable de Sitter solutions. We also analyse a class of type II compactifications with non-geometric fluxes, and study the distribution of (isotropically) stable de Sitter points in the parameter space. We do this through a random scan as well as through a complementary analysis of two-dimensional slices of the parameter space. We find that the (isotropically) stable de Sitter vacua are surprisingly rare, and organise themselves into thin sheets at small values of the cosmological constant.

Critical points of maximal D=8 gauged supergravities

We study the general deformations of maximal eight-dimensional supergravity by using the embedding tensor approach. The scalar potential induced by these gaugings is determined. Subsequently, by combining duality covariance arguments and algebraic geometry techniques, we find the complete set of critical points of the scalar potential. Remarkably, up to SO(2) X SO(3) rotations there turns out to be a unique theory admitting extrema. The gauge group of the theory is CSO(2,0,1).

Exceptional Flux Compactifications

We consider type II (non-)geometric flux backgrounds in the absence of brane sources, and construct their explicit embedding into maximal gauged D=4 supergravity. This enables one to investigate the critical points, mass spectra and gauge groups of such backgrounds. We focus on a class of type IIA geometric vacua and find a novel, non-supersymmetric and stable AdS vacuum in maximal supergravity with a non-semisimple gauge group. Our construction relies on a non-trivial mapping between SL(2) x SO(6,6) fluxes, SU(8) mass spectra and gaugings of E7(7) subgroups.

Gauged Supergravities and the Physics of Extra Dimensions

This thesis analyses gauged supergravities in various dimensions and their possible origin from compactifications of string theory. In the effective description the fluxes appear in the theory as deformation parameters generating a potential for the scalar fields. Physics after compactification is only sensitive to the orbits of the global symmetry group, in that gaugings lying in the same orbit are related by duality transformations. Given a certain gauged supergravity containing non-geometric fluxes, we discuss in dimension seven and higher whether there exists a duality transformation that rotates them away and, for those cases in which this is not possible, we give an interpretation as compactifications of Double Field Theory (DFT). Focusing then on our better understanding of geometric flux compactifications, we analyse further in this thesis a class of compactifications down to four dimensions which are compatible with half-maximal supersymmetry (orientifold compactifications) and discuss their embedding in maximal supergravity in the limit of vanishing local sources.

Charting the landscape of N=4 flux compactifications

We analyse the vacuum structure of isotropic Z_2 x Z_2 flux compactifications, allowing for a single set of sources. Combining algebraic geometry with supergravity techniques, we are able to classify all vacua for both type IIA and IIB backgrounds with arbitrary gauge and geometric fluxes. Surprisingly, geometric IIA compactifications lead to a unique theory with four different vacua. In this case we also perform the general analysis allowing for sources compatible with minimal supersymmetry. Moreover, some relevant examples of type IIB non-geometric compactifications are studied. The computation of the full N=4 mass spectrum reveals the presence of a number of non-supersymmetric and nevertheless stable AdS_4 vacua. In addition we find a novel dS_4 solution based on a non-semisimple gauging.

How to halve maximal supergravity

We work out the truncation from maximal to half-maximal supergravity in four dimensions. In particular, we determine the explicit constraints on the embedding tensors of both theories. These tensors specify the complete theories, including gauge groups and scalar potentials. Firstly, we find the linear constraint on N=8 theories to allow for a truncation to N=4. Secondly, we determine the additional N=4 quadratic constraints following from N=8. Finally, we comment on a brane interpretation as tadpole conditions for the latter.

Vacua Analysis in Extended Supersymmetry Compactifications

We analyse geometric type IIA flux compactifications leading to N=4 gauged supergravities in four dimensions. The complete landscape of isotropic vacua is presented, which turns out to belong to a unique theory. The solutions admit an uplift to maximal supergravity due to the vanishing of the flux-induced tadpoles for all the supersymmetry-breaking branes. Such an uplift is sketched out and the full N=8 mass spectra are discussed. We find the interesting presence of a non-supersymmetric and nevertheless stable minimum.

Flux Compactifications, Gauge Algebras and De Sitter

The introduction of (non-)geometric fluxes allows for N=1 moduli stabilisation in a De Sitter vacuum. The aim of this letter is to assess to what extent this is true in N=4 compactifications. First we identify the correct gauge algebra in terms of gauge and (non-)geometric fluxes. We then show that this algebra does not lead to any of the known gaugings with De Sitter solutions. In particular, the gaugings that one obtains from flux compactifications involve non-semi-simple algebras, while the known gaugings with De Sitter solutions consist of direct products of (semi-)simple algebras.

Magnetic charges in the AdS(4) superalgebra osp(4|2)

We discuss the issue of how to include magnetic charges in the AdS(4) superalgebra osp(4|2). It is shown that the usual way of introducing a pseudoscalar central charge on the right hand side of the basic anticommutator does not work, because this breaks SO(2,3) covariance. We propose a way out by promoting the magnetic charge to a vector charge, which amounts to enlarge osp(4|2) to the superconformal algebra su(2,2|1). The conditions for 1/4, 1/2 and 3/4 BPS states are then analyzed. These states form the boundary of the convex cone associated with the Jordan algebra of 4x4 complex hermitian matrices. An Inonu-Wigner contraction of the constructed superalgebra yields a known extension of the Poincare' superalgebra containing electric and magnetic 0-brane charges as well as string- and space-filling 3-brane charges. As an example, we show how some supersymmetric AdS(4) black holes fit into the classification scheme of BPS states.
