The Cayley transform in complex, real and graded $K$-theory

We use the Cayley transform to provide an explicit isomorphism at the level of cycles from van Daele $K$-theory to $KK$-theory for graded $C^*$-algebras with a real structure. Isomorphisms between $KK$-theory and complex or real $K$-theory for ungraded $C^*$-algebras are a special case of this map. In all cases our map is compatible with the computational techniques required in physical and geometrical applications, in particular index pairings and Kasparov products. We provide applications to real $K$-theory and topological phases of matter.

The KO-valued spectral flow for skew-adjoint Fredholm operators

In this article we give a comprehensive treatment of a `Clifford module flow' along paths in the skew-adjoint Fredholm operators on a real Hilbert space that takes values in KO${}_{*}(\mathbb{R})$ via the Clifford index of Atiyah-Bott-Shapiro. We develop its properties for both bounded and unbounded skew-adjoint operators including an axiomatic characterization. Our constructions and approach are motivated by the principle that \[ \text{spectral flow} = \text{Fredholm index}. \] That is, we show how the KO--valued spectral flow relates to a KO-valued index by proving a Robbin-Salamon type result. The Kasparov product is also used to establish a spectral flow $=$ Fredholm index result at the level of bivariant K-theory. We explain how our results incorporate previous applications of $\mathbb{Z}/ 2\mathbb{Z}$-valued spectral flow in the study of topological phases of matter.

Untwisting twisted spectral triples

We examine the index data associated to twisted spectral triples and higher order spectral triples. In particular, we show that a Lipschitz regular twisted spectral triple can always be `logarithmically dampened' through functional calculus, to obtain an ordinary (i.e. untwisted) spectral triple. The same procedure turns higher order spectral triples into spectral triples. We provide examples of highly regular twisted spectral triples with nontrivial index data for which Moscovici's ansatz for a twisted local index formula is identically zero.

A noncommutative framework for topological insulators

We study topological insulators, regarded as physical systems giving rise to topological invariants determined by symmetries both linear and anti-linear. Our perspective is that of noncommutative index theory of operator algebras. In particular we formulate the index problems using Kasparov theory, both complex and real. We show that the periodic table of topological insulators and superconductors can be realised as a real or complex index pairing of a Kasparov module capturing internal symmetries of the Hamiltonian with a spectral triple encoding the geometry of the sample's (possibly noncommutative) Brillouin zone.

Indefinite Kasparov modules and pseudo-Riemannian manifolds

We present a definition of indefinite Kasparov modules, a generalisation of unbounded Kasparov modules modelling non-symmetric and non-elliptic (e.g. hyperbolic) operators. Our main theorem shows that to each indefinite Kasparov module we can associate a pair of (genuine) Kasparov modules, and that this process is reversible. We present three examples of our framework: the Dirac operator on a pseudo-Riemannian spin manifold (i.e. a manifold with an indefinite metric), the harmonic oscillator, and the construction via the Kasparov product of an indefinite spectral triple from a family of spectral triples. This last construction corresponds to a foliation of a globally hyperbolic spacetime by spacelike hypersurfaces.

The $K$-theoretic bulk-edge correspondence for topological insulators

We study the application of Kasparov theory to topological insulator systems and the bulk-edge correspondence. We consider observable algebras as modelled by crossed products, where bulk and edge systems may be linked by a short exact sequence. We construct unbounded Kasparov modules encoding the dynamics of the crossed product. We then link bulk and edge Kasparov modules using the Kasparov product. Because of the anti-linear symmetries that occur in topological insulator models, real $C^*$-algebras and $KKO$-theory must be used.

The Cuntz-Pimsner extension and mapping cone exact sequences

For Cuntz-Pimsner algebras of bi-Hilbertian bimodules of finite Jones-Watatani index satisfying some side conditions, we give an explicit isomorphism between the $K$-theory exact sequences of the mapping cone of the inclusion of the coefficient algebra into a Cuntz-Pimsner algebra, and the Cuntz-Pimsner exact sequence. In the process we extend some results by the second author and collaborators from finite projective bimodules to finite index bimodules, and also clarify some aspects of Pimsner's `extension of scalars' construction.

The extension class and KMS states for Cuntz--Pimsner algebras of some bi-Hilbertian bimodules

For bi-Hilbertian $A$-bimodules, in the sense of Kajiwara--Pinzari--Watatani, we construct a Kasparov module representing the extension class defining the Cuntz--Pimsner algebra. The construction utilises a singular expectation which is defined using the $C^*$-module version of the Jones index for bi-Hilbertian bimodules. The Jones index data also determines a novel quasi-free dynamics and KMS states on these Cuntz--Pimsner algebras.

Factorisation of equivariant spectral triples in unbounded KK-theory

We provide sufficient conditions to factorise an equivariant spectral triple as a Kasparov product of unbounded classes constructed from the group action on the algebra and from the fixed point spectral triple. Our results are for the action of compact abelian Lie groups, and we demonstrate them with examples from manifolds and $θ$-deformations. In particular we show that equivariant Dirac-type spectral triples on the total space of a torus principal bundle always factorise. We also present an example that shows what goes wrong in the absence of our sufficient conditions (and how we get around it for this example).

Groupoid Fell bundles for product systems over quasi-lattice ordered groups

Consider a product system over the positive cone of a quasi-lattice ordered group. We construct a Fell bundle over an associated groupoid so that the cross-sectional algebra of the bundle is isomorphic to the Nica-Toeplitz algebra of the product system. Under the additional hypothesis that the left actions in the product system are implemented by injective homomorphisms, we show that the cross-sectional algebra of the restriction of the bundle to a natural boundary subgroupoid coincides with the Cuntz-Nica-Pimsner algebra of the product system. We apply these results to improve on existing sufficient conditions for nuclearity of the Nica-Toeplitz algebra and the Cuntz-Nica-Pimsner algebra, and for the Cuntz-Nica-Pimsner algebra to coincide with its co-universal quotient.

Nonunital spectral triples and metric completeness in unbounded KK-theory

By considering the general properties of approximate units in differentiable algebras, we are able to present a unified approach to characterising completeness of spectral metric spaces, existence of connections on modules, and the lifting of Kasparov products to the unbounded category. In particular, by strengthening Kasparov's technical theorem, we show that given any two composable KK-classes, we can find unbounded representatives whose product can be constructed to yield an unbounded representative of the Kasparov product.

The bulk-edge correspondence for the quantum Hall effect in Kasparov theory

We prove the bulk-edge correspondence in $K$-theory for the quantum Hall effect by constructing an unbounded Kasparov module from a short exact sequence that links the bulk and boundary algebras. This approach allows us to represent bulk topological invariants explicitly as a Kasparov product of boundary invariants with the extension class linking the algebras. This paper focuses on the example of the discrete integer quantum Hall effect, though our general method potentially has much wider applications.

Pseudo-Riemannian spectral triples and the harmonic oscillator

We define pseudo-Riemannian spectral triples, an analytic context broad enough to encompass a spectral description of a wide class of pseudo-Riemannian manifolds, as well as their noncommutative generalisations. Our main theorem shows that to each pseudo-Riemannian spectral triple we can associate a genuine spectral triple, and so a K-homology class. With some additional assumptions we can then apply the local index theorem. We give a range of examples and some applications. The example of the harmonic oscillator in particular shows that our main theorem applies to much more than just classical pseudo-Riemannian manifolds.

Twisted Cyclic Cohomology and Modular Fredholm Modules

Connes and Cuntz showed in [Comm. Math. Phys. 114 (1988), 515-526] that suitable cyclic cocycles can be represented as Chern characters of finitely summable semifinite Fredholm modules. We show an analogous result in twisted cyclic cohomology using Chern characters of modular Fredholm modules. We present examples of modular Fredholm modules arising from Podleś spheres and from $SU_q(2)$.

Riemannian manifolds in noncommutative geometry

We present a definition of Riemannian manifold in noncommutative geometry. Using products of unbounded Kasparov modules, we show one can obtain such Riemannian manifolds from noncommutative spin^c manifolds; and conversely, in the presence of a spin^c structure. We also show how to obtain an analogue of Kasparov's fundamental class for a Riemannian manifold, and the associated notion of Poincaré duality. Along the way we clarify the bimodule and first-order conditions for spectral triples.

A residue formula for the fundamental Hochschild 3-cocycle for SUq(2)

An analogue of a spectral triple over SUq(2) is constructed for which the usual assumption of bounded commutators with the Dirac operator fails. An analytic expression analogous to that for the Hochschild class of the Chern character for spectral triples yields a non-trivial twisted Hochschild 3-cocycle. The problems arising from the unbounded commutators are overcome by defining a residue functional using projections to cut down the Hilbert space.

The K-theory of Heegaard quantum lens spaces

Representing Z/N as roots of unity, we restrict a natural U(1)-action on the Heegaard quantum sphere to Z/N, and call the quotient spaces Heegaard quantum lens spaces. Then we use this representation of Z/N to construct an associated complex line bundle. This paper proves the stable non-triviality of these line bundles over any of the quantum lens spaces we consider. We use the pullback structure of the C*-algebra of the lens space to compute its K-theory via the Mayer-Vietoris sequence, and an explicit form of the Bass connecting homomorphism to prove the stable non-triviality of the bundles. On the algebraic side we prove the universality of the coordinate algebra of such a lens space for a particular set of generators and relations. We also prove the non-existence of non-trivial invertibles in the coordinate algebra of a lens space. Finally, we prolongate the Z/N-fibres of the Heegaard quantum sphere to U(1), and determine the algebraic structure of such a U(1)-prolongation.

The resolvent cocycle in twisted cyclic cohomology and a local index formula for the Podles sphere

We continue the investigation of twisted homology theories in the context of dimension drop phenomena. This work unifies previous equivariant index calculations in twisted cyclic cohomology. We do this by proving the existence of the resolvent cocycle, a finitely summable analogue of the JLO cocycle, under weaker smoothness hypotheses and in the more general setting of `modular' spectral triples. As an application we show that using our twisted resolvent cocycle, we can obtain a local index formula for the Podles sphere. The resulting twisted cyclic cocycle has non-vanishing Hochschild class which is in dimension 2.
