DIS coefficient functions at four loops in QCD and beyond

We report results for the lowest even-$N$ moments of the flavor-nonsinglet structure functions $F_2$ and $F_L$ in QCD at the fourth order in the perturbative expansion in the strong coupling constant $α_s$. Our results are presented in numerical form and we compare them with the leading and subleading terms of the threshold expansion for large values of $N$, which corresponds to the limit $x \to 1$.

Resummation of small-x double logarithms in QCD: inclusive deep-inelastic scattering

We present a comprehensive study of high-energy double logarithms in inclusive DIS. They appear parametrically as alpha_s^n ln^{2n-k} x at the n-th order in perturbation theory in the splitting functions for the parton evolution and the coefficient functions for the hard scattering process, and represent the leading corrections at small $x$ in the flavour non-singlet case. We perform their resummation, in terms of modified Bessel functions, to all orders in full QCD up to NNLL accuracy, and partly to N^3LL and beyond in the large-n_c limit, and provide fixed-order expansions up to five loops. In the flavour-singlet sector, where these double logarithms are sub-dominant at small x compared to single-logarithmic alpha_s^n x^{-1} ln^{n-k} x BFKL contributions, we construct fixed-order expansions up to five loops at NNLL accuracy in full QCD. The results elucidate the analytic small-x structure underlying inclusive DIS results in fixed-order perturbation theory and provide important information for present and future numerical and analytic calculations of these quantities.

Low moments of the four-loop splitting functions in QCD

We have computed the four lowest even-N moments of all four splitting functions for the evolution of flavour-singlet parton densities of hadrons at the fourth order in the strong coupling constant alpha_s. The perturbative expansion of these moments, and hence of the splitting functions for momentum fractions x >~ 0.1, is found to be well behaved with relative alpha_s-coefficients of order one and sub-percent effects on the scale derivatives of the quark and gluon distributions at alpha_s ~< 0.2. More intricate computations, including other approaches such as the operator-product expansion, are required to cover the full x-range relevant to LHC analyses. Our results are presented analytically for a general gauge group for detailed checks and validations of such future calculations.

Numerical and experimental evidence for a new interpretation of residence times in space

We investigate the energy dependence of Jovian electron residence times, which allows for a deeper understanding of adiabatic energy changes that occur during charged particle transport, as well as of their significance for simulation approaches. Thereby we seek to further validate an improved approach to estimate residence times numerically by investigating the implications on previous analytical approaches, and possible effects detectable by spacecraft data. Utilizing a propagation model based on a Stochastic Differential Equation (SDE) solver written in CUDA, residence times for Jovian electrons are calculated over the whole energy range dominated by the Jovian electron source spectrum. We analyse the interdependences both with the magnetic connection between observer and the source as well as between the the distribution of the exit (simulation) times and the resulting residence times. We point out a linear relation between the residence time for different kinetic energies and the longitudinal shift of the 13 month periodicity typically observed for Jovian electrons and discuss the applicability of these findings to data. Furthermore, we utilize our finding that the simulated residence times are approximately linearly related to the energy loss for Jovian and Galactic electrons, and develop an improved analytical estimation in agreement with the numerical residence time and the longitudinal shift observed by measurements.

Tests of collectivity in $^{98}$Zr by absolute transition rates

Lifetimes of low-spin excited states in $^{98}$Zr were measured using the recoil-distance Doppler-shift technique and the Doppler-shift attenuation method. The nucleus of interest was populated in a $^{96}$Zr($^{18}$O,$^{16}$O)$^{98}$Zr two-neutron transfer reaction at the Cologne FN Tandem accelerator. Lifetimes of six low-spin excited states, of which four are unknown, were measured. The deduced $B(E2)$ values were compared with Monte Carlo shell model and interacting boson model with configuration mixing calculations. Both approaches reproduce well most of the data but leave challenging questions regarding the structure of some low lying states.

Approximate four-loop QCD corrections to the Higgs-boson production cross section

We study the soft and collinear (SV) contributions to inclusive Higgs-boson production in gluon-gluon fusion at four loops. Using recent progress for the quark and gluon form factors and Mellin moments of splitting functions, we are able to complete the soft-gluon enhanced contributions exactly in the limit of a large number of colours, and to a sufficiently accurate numerical accuracy for QCD. The four-loop SV contributions increase the QCD cross section at 14 TeV by 2.7% and 0.2% for the standard choices mu_R=m_H and mu_R=m_H/2 of the renormalization scale, and reduce the scale uncertainty to below +-3%. As by-products, we derive the complete delta(1-x) term for the gluon-gluon splitting function at four loops and its purely Abelian contributions at five loops, and provide a numerical result for the single pole of the four-loop gluon form factor in dimensional regularization. Finally we present the closely related fourth-order coefficients D_4 for the soft-gluon exponentiation of Higgs-boson and Drell-Yan lepton-pair production.

Shape coexistence in the neutron-deficient $^{188}$Hg investigated via lifetime measurements

Shape coexistence in the $Z \approx 82$ region has been established in mercury, lead and polonium isotopes. Even-even mercury isotopes with $100 \leq N \leq 106$ present multiple fingerprints of this phenomenon, which seems to be no longer present for $N \geq 110$. According to a number of theoretical calculations, shape coexistence is predicted in the $^{188}$Hg isotope. The $^{188}$Hg nucleus was populated using two different fusion-evaporation reactions with two targets, $^{158}$Gd and $^{160}$Gd, and a beam of $^{34}$S, provided by the Tandem-ALPI accelerators complex at the Laboratori Nazionali di Legnaro. The channels of interest were selected using the information from the Neutron Wall array, while the $γ$ rays were detected using the GALILEO $γ$-ray array. The lifetimes of the excited states were determined using the Recoil Distance Doppler-Shift method, employing the dedicated GALILEO plunger device. Using the two-bands mixing and rotational models, the deformation of the pure configurations was obtained from the experimental results. The extracted transition strengths were compared with those calculated with the state-of-the-art symmetry-conserving configuration-mixing (SCCM) and five-dimentional collective Hamiltonian (5DCH) approaches in order to shed light on the nature of the observed structures in the $^{188}$Hg nucleus. An oblate, a normal- and a super-deformed prolate bands were predicted and their underlying shell structure was also discussed.

A Critical Appraisal and Evaluation of Modern PDFs

We review the present status of the determination of parton distribution functions (PDFs) in the light of the precision requirements for the LHC in Run 2 and other future hadron colliders. We provide brief reviews of all currently available PDF sets and use them to compute cross sections for a number of benchmark processes, including Higgs boson production in gluon-gluon fusion at the LHC. We show that the differences in the predictions obtained with the various PDFs are due to particular theory assumptions made in the fits of those PDFs. We discuss PDF uncertainties in the kinematic region covered by the LHC and on averaging procedures for PDFs, such as advocated by the PDF4LHC15 sets, and provide recommendations for the usage of PDF sets for theory predictions at the LHC.

First Forcer results on deep-inelastic scattering and related quantities

We present results on the fourth-order splitting functions and coefficient functions obtained using Forcer, a four-loop generalization of the Mincer program for the parametric reduction of self-energy integrals. We have computed the respective lowest three even-N and odd-N moments for the non-singlet splitting functions and the non-singlet coefficient functions in electromagnetic and nu+nu(bar) charged-current deep-inelastic scattering, and the N=2 and N=4 results for the corresponding flavour-singlet quantities. Enough moments have been obtained for an LLL-based determination of the analytic N-dependence of the nf^3 and nf^2 parts, respectively, of the singlet and non-singlet splitting functions. The large-N limit of the latter provides the complete nf^2 contributions to the four-loop cusp anomalous dimension. Our results also provide additional evidence of a non-vanishing contribution of quartic group invariants to the cusp anomalous dimension.

Non-singlet coefficient functions for charged-current deep-inelastic scattering to the third order in QCD

We have calculated the coefficient functions for the structure functions F_2, F_L and F_3 in nu-nubar charged-current deep-inelastic scattering (DIS) at the third order in the strong coupling alpha_s, thus completing the description of unpolarized inclusive W^(+-) exchange DIS to this order of massless perturbative QCD. In this brief note, our new results are presented in terms of compact approximate expressions that are sufficiently accurate for phenomenological analyses. For the benefit of such analyses we also collect, in a unified notation, the corresponding lower-order contributions and the flavour non-singlet coefficient functions for nu+nubar charged-current DIS. The behaviour of all six third-order coefficient functions at small Bjorken-x is briefly discussed.

On the next-to-next-to-leading order QCD corrections to heavy-quark production in deep-inelastic scattering

The contribution of quarks with masses m >> Lambda_QCD is the only part of the structure functions in deep-inelastic scattering (DIS) which is not yet known at the next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) of perturbative QCD. We present improved partial NNLO results for the most important structure function F_2(x,Q^2) near the partonic threshold, in the high-energy (small-x) limit and at high scales Q^2 >> m^2; and employ these results to construct approximations for the gluon and quark coefficient functions which cover the full kinematic plane. The approximation uncertainties are carefully investigated, and found to be large only at very small values, x smaller about 10^-3, of the Bjorken variable.

Generalized threshold resummation in inclusive DIS and semi-inclusive electron-positron annihilation

We present analytic all-order results for the highest three threshold logarithms of the space-like and time-like off-diagonal splitting functions and the corresponding coefficient functions for inclusive deep-inelastic scattering (DIS) and semi-inclusive e^+ e^- annihilation. All these results, obtained through an order-by-order analysis of the structure of the corresponding unfactorized quantities in dimensional regularization, can be expressed in terms of the Bernoulli functions introduced by one of us and leading-logarithmic soft-gluon exponentials. The resulting numerical corrections are small for the splitting functions but large for the coefficient functions. In both cases more terms in the threshold expansion need to be determined in order to arrive at quantitatively reliable results.

On gamma_5 in higher-order QCD calculations and the NNLO evolution of the polarized valence distribution

We discuss the prescription for the Dirac matrix gamma_5 in dimensional regularization used in most second- and third-order QCD calculations of collider cross sections. We provide an alternative implementation of this approach that avoids the use of an explicit form of gamma_5 and of its (anti-) commutation relations in the most important case of no more than one gamma_5 in each fermion trace. This treatment is checked by computing the third-order corrections to the structure functions F_2 and g_1 in charged-current deep-inelastic scattering with axial-vector couplings to the W-bosons. We derive the so far unknown third-order helicity-difference splitting function Delta P_ns^(2)s that contributes to the next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) evolution of the polarized valence quark distribution of the nucleon. This function is negligible at momentum fractions x >~ 0.3 but relevant at x << 1.

A calculation of the three-loop helicity-dependent splitting functions in QCD

We have calculated the complete matrix of three-loop helicity-difference (`polarized') splitting functions Delta P_ik^(2), i,k = q,g, in massless perturbative QCD. In this note we briefly discuss some properties of the polarized splitting functions and our non-standard determination of the hitherto missing lower-row quantities Delta P_gq^(2) and Delta P_gg^(2). The resulting next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) corrections to the evolution of polarized parton distributions are illustrated and found to be small even at rather large values of the strong coupling constant alpha_s.

Approximate N^3LO Higgs-boson production cross section using physical-kernel constraints

The single-logarithmic enhancement of the physical kernel for Higgs production by gluon-gluon fusion in the heavy top-quark limit is employed to derive the leading so far unknown contributions, ln^{5,4,3}(1-z), to the N^3LO coefficient function in the threshold expansion. Also using knowledge from Higgs-exchange DIS to estimate the remaining terms not vanishing for z = m_H^2/s^hat -> 1, these results are combined with the recently completed soft + virtual contributions to provide an uncertainty band for the complete N^3LO correction. For the 2008 MSTW parton distributions these N^3LO contributions increase the cross section at 14 TeV by (10 +- 2)% and (3 +- 2.5)% for the standard choices mu_R = m_H and mu_R = m_H/2 of the renormalization scale. The remaining uncertainty arising from the hard-scattering cross sections can be quantified as no more than 5%, which is smaller than that due to the strong coupling and the parton distributions.

Leading large-x logarithms of the quark-gluon contributions to inclusive Higgs-boson and lepton-pair production

We present all-order expressions for the leading double-logarithmic threshold contributions to the quark-gluon coefficient functions for inclusive Higgs-boson production in the heavy top-quark limit and for Drell-Yan lepton-pair production. These results have been derived using the structure of the unfactorized cross sections in dimensional regularization and the large-x resummation of the gluon-quark and quark-gluon splitting functions. The resummed coefficient functions, which are identical up to colour factor replacements, are similar to their counterparts in deep-inelastic scattering but slightly more complicated.

The Three-Loop Splitting Functions in QCD: The Helicity-Dependent Case

We present the next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) contributions to the main splitting functions for the evolution of longitudinally polarized parton densities of hadrons in perturbative QCD. The quark-quark and gluon-quark splitting functions have been obtained by extending our previous all Mellin-N calculations to the structure function g_1 in electromagnetic deep-inelastic scattering (DIS). Their quark-gluon and gluon-gluon counterparts have been derived using third-order fixed-N calculations of structure functions in graviton-exchange DIS, relations to the unpolarized case and mathematical tools for systems of Diophantine equations. The NNLO corrections to the splitting functions are small outside the region of small momentum fractions x where they exhibit a large double-logarithmic enhancement, yet the corrections to the evolution of the parton densities can be unproblematic down to at least x about 10^{-4}.

Generalized threshold resummation for semi-inclusive e+e- annihilation

Recently methods have been developed to extend the resummation of large-x double logarithms in inclusive deep-inelastic scattering (DIS) to terms not addressed by the soft-gluon exponentiation. Here we briefly outline our approach based on fixed-order results, the general large-x structure in dimensional regularization and the all-order factorization of mass singularities, which is directly applicable also to semi-inclusive e+e- annihilation (SIA). We then present some main results for the corresponding timelike splitting functions and transverse and longitudinal fragmentation functions. The close relation between DIS and SIA facilitates the determination of additional third-order results for the latter function which is fully known only at the next-to-leading order. Therefore all above quantities can be resummed at next-to-next-to-leading logarithmic accuracy.

On top-pair hadro-production at next-to-next-to-leading order

We study the QCD corrections at next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) to the cross section for the hadronic pair-production of top quarks. We present new results in the high-energy limit using the well-known framework of k_t-factorization. We combine these findings with the known threshold corrections and present improved approximate NNLO results over the full kinematic range. This approach is employed to quantify the residual theoretical uncertainty of the approximate NNLO results which amounts to about 4% for the Tevatron and 5% for the LHC cross-section predictions. Our analytic results in the high-energy limit will provide an important check on future computations of the complete NNLO cross sections.

Progress on double-logarithmic large-x and small-x resummations for (semi-)inclusive hard processes

Over the past few years considerable progress has been made on the resummation of double-logarithmically enhanced threshold (large-x) and high-energy (small-x) higher-order contributions to the splitting functions for parton and fragmentation distributions and to the coefficient functions for inclusive deep-inelastic scattering and semi-inclusive e^+e^- annihilation. We present an overview of the methods which allow, in many cases, to derive the coefficients of the highest three logarithms at all orders in the strong coupling from next-to-next-to-leading order results in massless perturbative QCD. Some representative analytical and numerical results are shown, and the present limitations of these resummations are discussed.

Resummed small-x and first-moment evolution of fragmentation functions in perturbative QCD

We study the splitting functions for the evolution of fragmentation distributions and the coefficient functions for single-hadron production in semi-inclusive electron-positron annihilation in massless perturbative QCD for small values of the momentum fraction and scaling variable x, where their fixed-order approximations are completely destabilized by huge double logarithms of the form alpha_s^n 1/x ln^(2n-a) x. Complete analytic all-order expressions in Mellin-N space are presented for the resummation of these terms at the next-to-next-to-leading logarithmic accuracy. The poles for the first moments, related to the evolution of hadron multiplicities, and the small-x instabilities of the next-to-leading order splitting and coefficient functions are removed by this resummation, which leads to an oscillatory small-x behaviour and functions that can be used at N=1 and down to extremely small values of x. First steps are presented towards extending these results to the higher accuracy required for an all-x combination with the state-of-the-art next-to-next-to-leading order large-x results.

On the Next-to-Next-to-Leading Order Evolution of Flavour-Singlet Fragmentation Functions

We present the third-order contributions to the quark-gluon and gluon-quark timelike splitting functions for the evolution of fragmentation functions in perturbative QCD. These quantities have been derived by studying physical evolution kernels for photon- and Higgs-exchange structure functions in deep inelastic scattering and their counterparts in semi-inclusive annihilation, together with constraints from the momentum sum rule and the supersymmetric limit. For this purpose we have also calculated the second-order coefficient functions for one-hadron inclusive Higgs decay in the heavy-top limit. A numerically tolerable uncertainty remains for the quark-gluon splitting function, which does not affect the endpoint logarithms for small and large momentum fractions. We briefly discuss these limits and illustrate the numerical impact of the third-order corrections. Compact and accurate parametrizations are provided for all third-order timelike splitting functions.

Resummation of small-x double logarithms in QCD: semi-inclusive electron-positron annihilation

We have derived the coefficients of the highest three 1/x-enhanced small-x logarithms of all timelike splitting functions and the coefficient functions for the transverse fragmentation function in one-particle inclusive e^+e^- annihilation at (in principle) all orders in massless perturbative QCD. For the longitudinal fragmentation function we present the respective two highest contributions. These results have been obtained from KLN-related decompositions of the unfactorized fragmentation functions in dimensional regularization and their structure imposed by the mass-factorization theorem. The resummation is found to completely remove the huge small-x spikes present in the fixed-order results for all quantities above, allowing for stable results down to very small values of the momentum fraction and scaling variable x. Our calculations can be extended to (at least) the corresponding as^n ln^(2n-l) x contributions to the above quantities and their counterparts in deep-inelastic scattering.

Generalized double-logarithmic large-x resummation in inclusive deep-inelastic scattering

We present all-order results for the highest three large-x logarithms of the splitting functions P_qg and P_gq and of the coefficient functions C_phi,q, C_2,g and C_L,g for structure functions in Higgs- and gauge-boson exchange DIS in massless perturbative QCD. The corresponding coefficients have been derived by studying the unfactorized partonic structure functions in dimensional regularization independently in terms of their iterative structure and in terms of the constraints imposed by the functional forms of the real- and virtual-emission contributions together with their Kinoshita--Lee-Nauenberg cancellations required by the mass-factorization theorem. The numerical resummation corrections are small for the splitting functions, but partly very large for the coefficient functions. The highest two (three for C_L,g) logarithms can be resummed in a closed form in terms of new special functions recently introduced in the context of the resummation of the leading logarithms

Higher-order predictions for splitting functions and coefficient functions from physical evolution kernels

We have studied the physical evolution kernels for nine non-singlet observables in deep-inelastic scattering (DIS), semi-inclusive e^+e^-annihilation and the Drell-Yan (DY) process, and for the flavour-singlet case of the photon- and heavy-top Higgs-exchange structure functions (F_2, F_phi) in DIS. All known contributions to these kernels show an only single-logarithmic large-x enhancement at all powers of 1-x. Conjecturing that this behaviour persists to (all) higher orders, we have predicted the highest three (DY: two) double logarithms of the higher-order non-singlet coefficient functions and of the four-loop singlet splitting functions. The coefficient-function predictions canbe written as exponentiations of 1/N-suppressed contributions in Mellin-N space which, however, are less predictive than the well-known exponentiation of the ln^k N terms.

Leading logarithmic large-x resummation of off-diagonal splitting functions and coefficient functions

We analyze the iterative structure of unfactorized partonic structure functions in the large-x limit, and derive all-order expressions for the leading-logarithmic off-diagonal splitting functions P_gq and P_qg and the corresponding coefficient functions C_phi,q and C_2,g in Higgs- and gauge-boson exchange deep-inelastic scattering. The splitting functions are given in terms of a new function not encountered in perturbative QCD so far, and vanish maximally in the supersymmetric limit C_A - C_F to 0. The coefficient functions do not vanish in this limit, and are given by simple expressions in terms of the above new function and the well-known leading-logarithmic threshold exponential. Our results also apply to the evolution of fragmentation functions and semi-inclusive e^+ e^- annihilation.

On higher-order flavour-singlet splitting and coefficient functions at large x

We discuss the large-x behaviour of the splitting functions P_qg and P_gq and of flavour-singlet coefficient functions, such as the gluon contributions C_2,g and C_L,g to the structure functions F_2,L, in massless perturbative QCD. These quantities are suppressed by one or two powers of 1-x with respect to the 1/(1-x) terms which are the subject of the well-known threshold exponentiation. We show that the double-logarithmic contributions to P_qg, P_gq and C_L at order alpha_s^4 can be predicted from known third-order results and present, as a first step towards a full all-order generalization, the leading-logarithmic large-x behaviour of P_qg, P_gq and C_2,g at all orders in alpha_s.

Threshold-improved predictions for charm production in deep-inelastic scattering

We have extended previous results on the threshold expansion of the gluon coefficient function for the charm contribution to the deep-inelastic structure function F_2 by deriving all threshold-enhanced contributions at the next-to-next-to-leading order. The size of these corrections is briefly illustrated, and a first step towards extending this improvement to more differential charm-production cross sections is presented.

On Higgs-exchange DIS, physical evolution kernels and fourth-order splitting functions at large x

We present the coefficient functions for deep-inelastic scattering (DIS) via the exchange of a scalar phi directly coupling only to gluons, such as the Higgs boson in the limit of a very heavy top quark and n_f effectively massless light flavours, to the third order in perturbative QCD. The two-loop results are employed to construct the next-to-next-to-leading order physical evolution kernels for the system (F_2 F_phi) of flavour-singlet structure functions. The practical relevance of these kernels as an alternative to MSbar factorization is bedevilled by artificial double logarithms at small values of the scaling variable x, where the large top-mass limit ceases to be appropriate. However, they show an only single-logarithmic enhancement at large x. Conjecturing that this feature persists to the next order also in the present singlet case, the three-loop coefficient functions facilitate exact predictions (backed up by their particular colour structure) of the double-logarithmic contributions to the fourth-order singlet splitting functions, i.e., of the terms (1-x)^a ln^k(1-x) with k = 4, 5, 6 and k = 3, 4, 5, respectively, for the off-diagonal and diagonal quantities to all powers a in 1-x.

Third-order QCD corrections to the charged-current structure function F_3

We compute the coefficient function for the charge-averaged W^(+/-)-exchange structure function F_3 in deep-inelastic scattering (DIS) to the third order in massless perturbative QCD. Our new three-loop contribution to this quantity forms, at not too small values of the Bjorken variable x, the dominant part of the next-to-next-to-next-to-leading order corrections. It thus facilitates improved determinations of the strong coupling alpha_s and of 1/Q^2 power corrections from scaling violations measured in neutrino-nucleon DIS. The expansion of F_3 in powers of alpha_s is stable at all values of x relevant to measurements at high scales Q^2. At small x the third-order coefficient function is dominated by diagrams with the colour structure d_abc d^abc not present at lower orders. At large x the coefficient function for F_3 is identical to that of F_1 up to terms vanishing for x to 1.

Higher-Order Corrections in Threshold Resummation

We extend the threshold resummation exponents G^N in Mellin-N space to the fourth logarithmic (N^3LL) order collecting the terms alpha_s^2 (alpha_s ln N)^n to all orders in the strong coupling constant as. Comparing the results to our previous three-loop calculations for deep-inelastic scattering (DIS), we derive the universal coefficients B_q and B_g governing the final-state jet functions to order alpha_s^3, extending the previous quark and gluon results by one and two orders. A curious relation is found at second order between these quantities, the splitting functions and the large-angle soft emissions in Drell-Yan type processes. We study the numerical effect of the N^3LL corrections using both the fully exponentiated form and the expansion of the coefficient function in towers of logarithms.

Higher-Order Soft Corrections to Lepton Pair and Higgs Boson Production

Utilizing recent three-loop results on the quark and gluon splitting functions and form factors, we derive the complete threshold-enhanced third-order (N^3LO) QCD corrections to the total cross sections for the production of lepton pairs and the Higgs boson in hadron collisions. These results, for the latter case obtained in the heavy top-quark limit, are employed to extend the threshold resummation for these processes to the fourth logarithmic order. We investigate the numerical impact of the higher-order corrections for Higgs boson production at the Tevatron and the LHC. Our results, suitably treated in Mellin N-space, provide a sufficiently accurate approximation to the full N^3LO contributions. Corrections of about 5% at the LHC and 10% at the Tevatron are found for typical Higgs masses. The N^3LO predictions exhibit a considerably reduced dependence on the renormalization scale with, for the first time, stationary points close to the Higgs mass.

Third-order QCD results on form factors and coefficient functions

We summarize recent higher-order QCD results based, directly or indirectly, on the Mellin-space computation of the next-to-next-to-leading-order splitting functions governing the evolution of hadronic parton distributions. Specifically, we briefly present third-order results for the coefficient functions in inclusive deep-inelastic scattering (including the structure function F_3 not published so far), the on-shell quark and gluon form factors, and the total cross section for Higgs production at hadron colliders.

Three-Loop Results for Quark and Gluon Form Factors

We study the photon-quark-quark and Higgs-gluon-gluon form factors for on-shell massless quarks and gluons in perturbative QCD. Previous third-order results for the quark case are extended by calculating the fermion-loop contributions up to the finite terms in dimensional regularization. For the gluon case the complete set of infrared poles at three loops is derived. Using the exponentiation of the form factor, the latter results are employed to extract a function entering the infrared factorization of general third-order amplitudes. We evaluate the infrared finite absolute ratio of the time-like and space-like gluon form factors up to the fourth order in the strong coupling constant. The result supports previous indications that the perturbative expansion of the Higgs boson production rate at the LHC is under control.

Efficient evolution of unpolarized and polarized parton distributions with QCD-PEGASUS

The Fortran package QCD-PEGASUS is presented. This program provides fast, flexible and accurate solutions of the evolution equations for unpolarized and polarized parton distributions of hadrons in perturbative QCD. The evolution is performed using the symbolic moment-space solutions on a one-fits-all Mellin inversion contour. User options include the order of the evolution including the next-to-next-to-leading order in the unpolarized case, the type of the evolution including an emulation of brute-force solutions, the evolution with a fixed number n_f of flavours or in the variable-n_f scheme, and the evolution with a renormalization scale unequal to the factorization scale. The initial distributions are needed in a form facilitating the computation of the complex Mellin moments.

The Longitudinal Structure Function at the Third Order

We compute the complete third-order contributions to the coefficient functions for the longitudinal structure function F_L, thus completing the next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) description of unpolarized electromagnetic deep-inelastic scattering in massless perturbative QCD. Our exact results agree with determinations of low even-integer Mellin moments and of the leading small-x terms in the flavour-singlet sector. In this letter we present compact and accurate parametrizations of the results and illustrate the numerical impact of the NNLO corrections.

The Three-Loop Splitting Functions in QCD: The Singlet Case

We compute the next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) contributions to the splitting functions governing the evolution of the unpolarized flavour-singlet parton densities in perturbative QCD. The exact expressions are presented in both Mellin-N and Bjorken-x space. We also provide accurate parametrizations for practical applications. Our results agree with all partial results available in the literature. As in the non-singlet case, the correct leading logarithmic predictions for small momentum fractions x do not provide good estimates of the respective complete splitting functions. We investigate the size of the corrections and the stability of the NNLO evolution under variation of the renormalization scale. The perturbative expansion appears to converge rapidly at x >~ 10^-3. Relatively large third-order corrections are found at smaller values of x.

Non-Singlet Structure Functions at Three Loops: Fermionic Contributions

We compute the fermionic (n_f) contributions to the flavour non-singlet structure functions in unpolarized electromagnetic deep-inelastic scattering at third order of massless perturbative QCD. Complete results are presented for the corresponding nf-parts of the three-loop anomalous dimension and the three-loop coefficient functions for the structure functions F_2 and F_L. Our results agree with all partial and approximate results available in the literature. The present calculation also facilitates a complete determination of the threshold-resummation parameters B_2 and D_2^DIS of which only the sum was known so far, thus completing the information required for the next-to-next-to-leading logarithmic resummation. We find that D_2^DIS vanishes in the MSbar scheme.

Dynamical Parton Distributions Revisited

Dynamical parton densities, generated radiatively from valence-like inputs at some low resolution scale, are confronted with recent small-x data on deep inelastic and other hard scattering processes. It is shown that within theoretical uncertainties our previous (1994) dynamical/radiative parton distributions are compatible with most recent data and still applicable within the restricted accuracy margins of the presently available next-to-leading order calculations. Due to recent high precision measurements we also present an updated, more accurate, version of our (valence-like) dynamical input distributions. Furthermore, our perturbatively stable parameter-free dynamical predictions are extended to the extremely small-x region, 10^-8 ~< x ~< 10^-5, relevant to questions concerning ultra-high-energy cosmic ray and neutrino astronomy.

The Resummed Gluon Anomalous Dimension and Structure Functions at Small x

The impact of the resummed next-to-leading logarithmic small-$x$ contributions to the anomalous dimension $γ_{gg}$ is evaluated for the unpolarized parton densities and structure functions of the nucleon. These new terms diminish the gluon distribution and overcompensate the contribution caused by the resummed leading logarithmic small-$x$ anomalous dimension and the quarkonic anomalous dimensions beyond next-to-leading order.

The Evolution of Unpolarized and Polarized Structure Functions at Small $x$

A survey is given of recent developments on the resummed small-$x$ evolution, in a framework based on the renormalization group equation, of non--singlet and singlet structure functions in both unpolarized and polarized deep--inelastic scattering. The available resummed anomalous dimensions are discussed for all these cases, and the most important analytic and numerical results are compiled. The quantitative effects of these small-$x$ resummations on the evolution of the various parton densities and structure functions are presented, and their present uncertainties are investigated. An application to QED radiative corrections is given.

Theoretical Uncertainties in the QCD Evolution of Structure Functions and their Impact on $α_s(M_Z^2)$

The differences are discussed between various next-to-leading order prescriptions for the QCD evolution of parton densities and structure functions. Their quantitative impact is understood to an accuracy of 0.02\%. The uncertainties due to the freedom to choose the renormalization and factorization scales are studied. The quantitative consequences of the different uncertainties on the extraction of the strong coupling constant $α_s$ from scaling violations in deep--inelastic scattering are estimated for the kinematic regime accessible at HERA.
