DIS coefficient functions at four loops in QCD and beyond

We report results for the lowest even-$N$ moments of the flavor-nonsinglet structure functions $F_2$ and $F_L$ in QCD at the fourth order in the perturbative expansion in the strong coupling constant $α_s$. Our results are presented in numerical form and we compare them with the leading and subleading terms of the threshold expansion for large values of $N$, which corresponds to the limit $x \to 1$.

Off-forward anomalous dimensions in the leading-$n_f$ limit

We review the computation of off-forward anomalous dimensions in the limit of a large number of quark flavors $n_f$. The method is based on a consistency relation the anomalous dimensions have to obey, which is a direct consequence of the renormalization structure of the operators in the chiral limit. In addition, we present a way to generate the anomalous dimensions to all orders in the strong coupling $α_s$. This is based on exact conformal symmetry at the Wilson-Fisher critical point and provides an extension of previous calculations of this type for the forward anomalous dimensions.

Resummation of small-x double logarithms in QCD: inclusive deep-inelastic scattering

We present a comprehensive study of high-energy double logarithms in inclusive DIS. They appear parametrically as alpha_s^n ln^{2n-k} x at the n-th order in perturbation theory in the splitting functions for the parton evolution and the coefficient functions for the hard scattering process, and represent the leading corrections at small $x$ in the flavour non-singlet case. We perform their resummation, in terms of modified Bessel functions, to all orders in full QCD up to NNLL accuracy, and partly to N^3LL and beyond in the large-n_c limit, and provide fixed-order expansions up to five loops. In the flavour-singlet sector, where these double logarithms are sub-dominant at small x compared to single-logarithmic alpha_s^n x^{-1} ln^{n-k} x BFKL contributions, we construct fixed-order expansions up to five loops at NNLL accuracy in full QCD. The results elucidate the analytic small-x structure underlying inclusive DIS results in fixed-order perturbation theory and provide important information for present and future numerical and analytic calculations of these quantities.

Low moments of the four-loop splitting functions in QCD

We have computed the four lowest even-N moments of all four splitting functions for the evolution of flavour-singlet parton densities of hadrons at the fourth order in the strong coupling constant alpha_s. The perturbative expansion of these moments, and hence of the splitting functions for momentum fractions x >~ 0.1, is found to be well behaved with relative alpha_s-coefficients of order one and sub-percent effects on the scale derivatives of the quark and gluon distributions at alpha_s ~< 0.2. More intricate computations, including other approaches such as the operator-product expansion, are required to cover the full x-range relevant to LHC analyses. Our results are presented analytically for a general gauge group for detailed checks and validations of such future calculations.

Approximate four-loop QCD corrections to the Higgs-boson production cross section

We study the soft and collinear (SV) contributions to inclusive Higgs-boson production in gluon-gluon fusion at four loops. Using recent progress for the quark and gluon form factors and Mellin moments of splitting functions, we are able to complete the soft-gluon enhanced contributions exactly in the limit of a large number of colours, and to a sufficiently accurate numerical accuracy for QCD. The four-loop SV contributions increase the QCD cross section at 14 TeV by 2.7% and 0.2% for the standard choices mu_R=m_H and mu_R=m_H/2 of the renormalization scale, and reduce the scale uncertainty to below +-3%. As by-products, we derive the complete delta(1-x) term for the gluon-gluon splitting function at four loops and its purely Abelian contributions at five loops, and provide a numerical result for the single pole of the four-loop gluon form factor in dimensional regularization. Finally we present the closely related fourth-order coefficients D_4 for the soft-gluon exponentiation of Higgs-boson and Drell-Yan lepton-pair production.

Heavy-flavor PDF evolution and variable-flavor number scheme uncertainties in deep-inelastic scattering

We consider a detailed account on the construction of the heavy-quark parton distribution functions for charm and bottom, starting from $n_f=3$ light flavors in the fixed-flavor number (FFN) scheme and by using the standard decoupling relations for heavy quarks in QCD. We also account for two-mass effects. Furthermore, different implementations of the variable-flavor-number (VFN) scheme in deep-inelastic scattering (DIS) are studied, with the particular focus on the resummation of large logarithms in $Q^2/m_h^2$, the ratio the virtuality of the exchanged gauge-boson $Q^2$ to the heavy-quark mass squared $m_h^2$. A little impact of resummation effects if found in the kinematic range of the existing data on the DIS charm-quark production so that they can be described very well within the FFN scheme. Finally, we study the theoretical uncertainties associated to the VFN scheme, which manifest predominantly at small $Q^2$.

A Critical Appraisal and Evaluation of Modern PDFs

We review the present status of the determination of parton distribution functions (PDFs) in the light of the precision requirements for the LHC in Run 2 and other future hadron colliders. We provide brief reviews of all currently available PDF sets and use them to compute cross sections for a number of benchmark processes, including Higgs boson production in gluon-gluon fusion at the LHC. We show that the differences in the predictions obtained with the various PDFs are due to particular theory assumptions made in the fits of those PDFs. We discuss PDF uncertainties in the kinematic region covered by the LHC and on averaging procedures for PDFs, such as advocated by the PDF4LHC15 sets, and provide recommendations for the usage of PDF sets for theory predictions at the LHC.

Determination of the top-quark mass from hadro-production of single top-quarks

We present a new determination of the top-quark mass $m_t$ based on the experimental data from the Tevatron and the LHC for single-top hadro-production. We use the inclusive cross sections of $s$- and $t$-channel top-quark production to extract $m_t$ and to minimize the dependence on the strong coupling constant and the gluon distribution in the proton compared to the hadro-production of top-quark pairs. As part of our analysis we compute the next-to-next-to-leading order approximation for the $s$-channel cross section in perturbative QCD based on the known soft-gluon corrections and implement it in the program Hathor for the numerical evaluation of the hadronic cross section. Results for the top-quark mass are reported in the $\bar{MS}$ and in the on-shell renormalization scheme.

Non-singlet coefficient functions for charged-current deep-inelastic scattering to the third order in QCD

We have calculated the coefficient functions for the structure functions F_2, F_L and F_3 in nu-nubar charged-current deep-inelastic scattering (DIS) at the third order in the strong coupling alpha_s, thus completing the description of unpolarized inclusive W^(+-) exchange DIS to this order of massless perturbative QCD. In this brief note, our new results are presented in terms of compact approximate expressions that are sufficiently accurate for phenomenological analyses. For the benefit of such analyses we also collect, in a unified notation, the corresponding lower-order contributions and the flavour non-singlet coefficient functions for nu+nubar charged-current DIS. The behaviour of all six third-order coefficient functions at small Bjorken-x is briefly discussed.

On the next-to-next-to-leading order QCD corrections to heavy-quark production in deep-inelastic scattering

The contribution of quarks with masses m >> Lambda_QCD is the only part of the structure functions in deep-inelastic scattering (DIS) which is not yet known at the next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) of perturbative QCD. We present improved partial NNLO results for the most important structure function F_2(x,Q^2) near the partonic threshold, in the high-energy (small-x) limit and at high scales Q^2 >> m^2; and employ these results to construct approximations for the gluon and quark coefficient functions which cover the full kinematic plane. The approximation uncertainties are carefully investigated, and found to be large only at very small values, x smaller about 10^-3, of the Bjorken variable.

PDFs, $α_s$, and quark masses from global fits

The strong coupling constant $α_s$ and the heavy-quark masses, $m_c$, $m_b$, $m_t$ are extracted simultaneosly with the parton distribution functions (PDFs) in the updated ABM12 fit including recent data from CERN-SPS, HERA, Tevatron, and the LHC. The values of \begin{eqnarray} \nonumber α_s(M_Z)&=&0.1147\pm0.0008~({\rm exp.)},\\ \nonumber m_c(m_c)&=&1.252\pm 0.018~({\rm exp.})~{\rm GeV},\\ \nonumber m_b(m_b)&=&3.83\pm0.12~({\rm exp.})~{\rm GeV},\\ \nonumber m_t(m_t)&=&160.9\pm1.1~({\rm exp.})~{\rm GeV} \end{eqnarray} are obtained with the $\overline{MS}$ heavy-quark mass definition being employed throughout the analysis.

This report summarises the properties of Standard Model processes at the 100 TeV pp collider. We document the production rates and typical distributions for a number of benchmark Standard Model processes, and discuss new dynamical phenomena arising at the highest energies available at this collider. We discuss the intrinsic physics interest in the measurement of these Standard Model processes, as well as their role as backgrounds for New Physics searches.

Prompt neutrino flux in the atmosphere revisited

Prompt neutrino fluxes due to the interactions of high-energy cosmic rays with the Earth's atmosphere are backgrounds in the search for high-energy neutrinos of galactic or extra-galactic origin performed by Very Large Volume Neutrino Telescopes. We summarize our predictions for prompt neutrinos, showing their basic features as emerging from the calculation in a QCD framework capable of describing recent charm data from the Large Hadron Collider.

Summary of workshop on Future Physics with HERA Data

Recent highlights from the HERA experiments, Hermes, H1 and ZEUS, are reviewed and ideas for future analyses to fully exploit this unique data set are proposed. This document is a summary of a workshop on future physics with HERA data held at DESY, Hamburg at the end of 2014. All areas of HERA physics are covered and contributions from both experimentalists and theorists are included. The document outlines areas where HERA physics can still make a significant contribution, principally in a deeper understanding of QCD, and its relevance to other facilities. Within the framework of the Data Preservation in High Energy Physics, the HERA data have been preserved for analyses to take place over a timescale of 10 years and more. Therefore, although an extensive list of possibilities is presented here, safe storage of the data ensures that it can also be used in the far future should new ideas and analyses be proposed.

The new ABMP16 PDF

We present an update of the ABM12 PDF analysis including improved constraints due to the final version of the inclusive DIS HERA data, the Tevatron and LHC data on the W- and Z-production and those on heavy-quark production in the electron- and neutrino-induced DIS at HERA and the fixed-target experiments NOMAD and CHORUS. We also check the impact of the Tevatron and LHC top-quark production data on the PDFs and the strong coupling constant. We obtain $α_s(M_Z)=0.1145(9)$ and $0.1147(8)$ with and without the top-quark data included, respectively.

Two-loop conformal generators for leading-twist operators in QCD

QCD evolution equations in minimal subtraction schemes have a hidden symmetry: One can construct three operators that commute with the evolution kernel and form an $SL(2)$ algebra, i.e. they satisfy (exactly) the $SL(2)$ commutation relations. In this paper we find explicit expressions for these operators to two-loop accuracy going over to QCD in non-integer $d=4-2ε$ space-time dimensions at the intermediate stage. In this way conformal symmetry of QCD is restored on quantum level at the specially chosen (critical) value of the coupling, and at the same time the theory is regularized allowing one to use the standard renormalization procedure for the relevant Feynman diagrams. Quantum corrections to conformal generators in $d=4-2ε$ effectively correspond to the conformal symmetry breaking in the physical theory in four dimensions and the $SL(2)$ commutation relations lead to nontrivial constraints on the renormalization group equations for composite operators. This approach is valid to all orders in perturbation theory and the result includes automatically all terms that can be identified as due to a nonvanishing QCD $β$-function (in the physical theory in four dimensions). Our result can be used to derive three-loop evolution equations for flavor-nonsinglet quark-antiquark operators including mixing with the operators containing total derivatives. These equations govern, e.g., the scale dependence of generalized hadron parton distributions and light-cone meson distribution amplitudes.

High-precision $α_s$ measurements from LHC to FCC-ee

This document provides a writeup of all contributions to the workshop on "High precision measurements of $α_s$: From LHC to FCC-ee" held at CERN, Oct. 12--13, 2015. The workshop explored in depth the latest developments on the determination of the QCD coupling $α_s$ from 15 methods where high precision measurements are (or will be) available. Those include low-energy observables: (i) lattice QCD, (ii) pion decay factor, (iii) quarkonia and (iv) $τ$ decays, (v) soft parton-to-hadron fragmentation functions, as well as high-energy observables: (vi) global fits of parton distribution functions, (vii) hard parton-to-hadron fragmentation functions, (viii) jets in $e^\pm$p DIS and $γ$-p photoproduction, (ix) photon structure function in $γ$-$γ$, (x) event shapes and (xi) jet cross sections in $e^+e^-$ collisions, (xii) W boson and (xiii) Z boson decays, and (xiv) jets and (xv) top-quark cross sections in proton-(anti)proton collisions. The current status of the theoretical and experimental uncertainties associated to each extraction method, the improvements expected from LHC data in the coming years, and future perspectives achievable in $e^+e^-$ collisions at the Future Circular Collider (FCC-ee) with $\cal{O}$(1--100 ab$^{-1}$) integrated luminosities yielding 10$^{12}$ Z bosons and jets, and 10$^{8}$ W bosons and $τ$ leptons, are thoroughly reviewed. The current uncertainty of the (preliminary) 2015 strong coupling world-average value, $α_s(m_Z)$ = 0.1177 $\pm$ 0.0013, is about 1\%. Some participants believed this may be reduced by a factor of three in the near future by including novel high-precision observables, although this opinion was not universally shared. At the FCC-ee facility, a factor of ten reduction in the $α_s$ uncertainty should be possible, mostly thanks to the huge Z and W data samples available.

Iso-spin asymmetry of quark distributions and implications for single top-quark production at the LHC

We present an improved determination of the up- and down-quark distributions in the proton using recent data on charged lepton asymmetries from $W^\pm$ gauge-boson production at the LHC and Tevatron. The analysis is performed in the framework of a global fit of parton distribution functions. The fit results are consistent with a non-zero iso-spin asymmetry of the sea, $x(\bar d - \bar u)$, at small values of Bjorken $x\sim 10^{-4}$ indicating a delayed onset of the Regge asymptotics of a vanishing $(\bar d - \bar u)$-asymmetry at small-$x$. We compare with up- and down-quark distributions available in the literature and provide accurate predictions for the production of single top-quarks at the LHC, a process which can serve as a standard candle for the light quark flavor content of the proton.

Lepton fluxes from atmospheric charm revisited

We update predictions for lepton fluxes from the hadroproduction of charm quarks in the scattering of primary cosmic rays with the Earth's atmosphere. The calculation of charm-pair hadroproduction applies the latest results from perturbative QCD through next-to-next-to-leading order and modern parton distributions, together with estimates on various sources of uncertainties. Our predictions for the lepton fluxes turn out to be compatible, within the uncertainty band, with recent results in the literature. However, by taking into account contributions neglected in previous works, our total uncertainties are much larger. The predictions are crucial for the interpretation of results from neutrino experiments like IceCube, when disentangling signals of neutrinos of astrophysical origin from the atmospheric background.

Nucleon PDF separation with the collider and fixed-target data

We consider the impact of the recent data obtained by the LHC, Tevatron, and fixed-target experiments on the nucleon quark distributions with a particular focus on disentangling different quark species. An improved determination of the poorly known strange sea distribution is obtained due to including data from the neutrino-induced deep-inelastic scattering experiments NOMAD and CHORUS. The impact of the associated (W + c) production data by CMS and ATLAS on the strange sea determination is also studied and a comparison with earlier results based on the collider data is discussed. Finally, the recent LHC and Tevatron data on the charged lepton asymmetry are compared to the NNLO ABM predictions and the potential of this input in improving the non-strange sea distributions is evaluated.

On gamma_5 in higher-order QCD calculations and the NNLO evolution of the polarized valence distribution

We discuss the prescription for the Dirac matrix gamma_5 in dimensional regularization used in most second- and third-order QCD calculations of collider cross sections. We provide an alternative implementation of this approach that avoids the use of an explicit form of gamma_5 and of its (anti-) commutation relations in the most important case of no more than one gamma_5 in each fermion trace. This treatment is checked by computing the third-order corrections to the structure functions F_2 and g_1 in charged-current deep-inelastic scattering with axial-vector couplings to the W-bosons. We derive the so far unknown third-order helicity-difference splitting function Delta P_ns^(2)s that contributes to the next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) evolution of the polarized valence quark distribution of the nucleon. This function is negligible at momentum fractions x >~ 0.3 but relevant at x << 1.

Present theoretical uncertainties on charm hadroproduction in QCD and prompt neutrino fluxes

Prompt neutrino fluxes are basic backgrounds in the search of high-energy neutrinos of astrophysical origin, performed by means of full-size neutrino telescopes located at Earth, under ice or under water. Predictions for these fluxes are provided on the basis of up-to-date theoretical results for charm hadroproduction in perturbative QCD, together with a comprehensive discussion of the various sources of theoretical uncertainty affecting their computation, and a quantitative estimate of each uncertainty contribution.

A calculation of the three-loop helicity-dependent splitting functions in QCD

We have calculated the complete matrix of three-loop helicity-difference (`polarized') splitting functions Delta P_ik^(2), i,k = q,g, in massless perturbative QCD. In this note we briefly discuss some properties of the polarized splitting functions and our non-standard determination of the hitherto missing lower-row quantities Delta P_gq^(2) and Delta P_gg^(2). The resulting next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) corrections to the evolution of polarized parton distributions are illustrated and found to be small even at rather large values of the strong coupling constant alpha_s.

Approximate N^3LO Higgs-boson production cross section using physical-kernel constraints

The single-logarithmic enhancement of the physical kernel for Higgs production by gluon-gluon fusion in the heavy top-quark limit is employed to derive the leading so far unknown contributions, ln^{5,4,3}(1-z), to the N^3LO coefficient function in the threshold expansion. Also using knowledge from Higgs-exchange DIS to estimate the remaining terms not vanishing for z = m_H^2/s^hat -> 1, these results are combined with the recently completed soft + virtual contributions to provide an uncertainty band for the complete N^3LO correction. For the 2008 MSTW parton distributions these N^3LO contributions increase the cross section at 14 TeV by (10 +- 2)% and (3 +- 2.5)% for the standard choices mu_R = m_H and mu_R = m_H/2 of the renormalization scale. The remaining uncertainty arising from the hard-scattering cross sections can be quantified as no more than 5%, which is smaller than that due to the strong coupling and the parton distributions.

Determination of Strange Sea Quark Distributions from Fixed-target and Collider Data

We present an improved determination of the strange sea distribution in the nucleon with constraints coming from the recent charm production data in neutrino-nucleon deep-inelastic scattering by the NOMAD and CHORUS experiments and from charged current inclusive deep-inelastic scattering at HERA. We demonstrate that the results are consistent with the data from the ATLAS and the CMS experiments on the associated production of $W^\pm$-bosons with $c$-quarks. We also discuss issues related to the recent strange sea determination by the ATLAS experiment using LHC collider data.

High precision fundamental constants at the TeV scale

This report summarizes the proceedings of the 2014 Mainz Institute for Theoretical Physics (MITP) scientific program on "High precision fundamental constants at the TeV scale". The two outstanding parameters in the Standard Model dealt with during the MITP scientific program are the strong coupling constant $α_s$ and the top-quark mass $m_t$. Lacking knowledge on the value of those fundamental constants is often the limiting factor in the accuracy of theoretical predictions. The current status on $α_s$ and $m_t$ has been reviewed and directions for future research have been identified.

The Three-Loop Splitting Functions in QCD: The Helicity-Dependent Case

We present the next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) contributions to the main splitting functions for the evolution of longitudinally polarized parton densities of hadrons in perturbative QCD. The quark-quark and gluon-quark splitting functions have been obtained by extending our previous all Mellin-N calculations to the structure function g_1 in electromagnetic deep-inelastic scattering (DIS). Their quark-gluon and gluon-gluon counterparts have been derived using third-order fixed-N calculations of structure functions in graviton-exchange DIS, relations to the unpolarized case and mathematical tools for systems of Diophantine equations. The NNLO corrections to the splitting functions are small outside the region of small momentum fractions x where they exhibit a large double-logarithmic enhancement, yet the corrections to the evolution of the parton densities can be unproblematic down to at least x about 10^{-4}.

A Large Hadron Electron Collider at CERN

This document provides a brief overview of the recently published report on the design of the Large Hadron Electron Collider (LHeC), which comprises its physics programme, accelerator physics, technology and main detector concepts. The LHeC exploits and develops challenging, though principally existing, accelerator and detector technologies. This summary is complemented by brief illustrations of some of the highlights of the physics programme, which relies on a vastly extended kinematic range, luminosity and unprecedented precision in deep inelastic scattering. Illustrations are provided regarding high precision QCD, new physics (Higgs, SUSY) and electron-ion physics. The LHeC is designed to run synchronously with the LHC in the twenties and to achieve an integrated luminosity of O(100) fb$^{-1}$. It will become the cleanest high resolution microscope of mankind and will substantially extend as well as complement the investigation of the physics of the TeV energy scale, which has been enabled by the LHC.

ABM news and benchmarks

We report on progress in the determination of the unpolarised nucleon PDFs within the ABM global fit framework. The data used in the ABM analysis are updated including the charm-production and the high-Q2 neutral-current samples obtained at the HERA collider, as well as the LHC data on the differential Drell-Yan cross-sections. An updated set of the PDFs with improved experimental and theoretical accuracy at small x is presented. We find minimal impact of the t-quark production cross section measured at the Tevatron and the LHC on the gluon distribution and the value of the strong coupling constant α_s determined from the ABM fit in the case of the t-quark running-mass definition. In particular, the value of α_s(M_Z)=0.1133(8) is obtained from the variant of the ABM12 fit with the Tevatron and CMS t-quark production cross-section data included and the MSbar value of m_t(m_t)=162 GeV.

We describe the determination of the strong coupling constant $α_s(M_Z^2)$ and of the charm-quark mass $m_c(m_c)$ in the $\bar{\rm MS}$-scheme, based on the QCD analysis of the unpolarized World deep-inelastic scattering data. At NNLO the values of $α_s(M_Z^2)=0.1134\pm 0.0011(\text{exp})$ and $m_c(m_c)=1.24 \pm 0.03 (\text{exp})\,^{+0.03}_{-0.02} (\text{scale})\,^{+0.00}_{-0.07} (\text{th})$ are obtained and are compared with other determinations, also clarifying discrepancies.

Heavy-quark production in deep-inelastic scattering

We report recent experimental and theoretical progress concerning the heavy-quark electro-production in the context of the ABM11 parton distribution function (PDF) fit. In the updated ABM11 analysis, including the recent combined HERA charm data, the MSbar-values of the c-quark mass m_c(m_c)=1.24 +- 0.03 (exp)\,^{+0.03}_{-0.02}(scale)\,^{+0.00}_{-0.07} (th) and m_c(m_c)=1.15\, +- 0.04 (exp)\,^{+0.04}_{-0.00} (scale) are determined at NNLO and NLO, respectively. The values of m_c obtained are compared to other determinations including the ones based on the various variable-flavor-number (VFN) scheme prescriptions. The VFN scheme uncertainties related to the matching of the 4(5)-flavor PDFs with the 3(4)-flavor ones are discussed.

On the Relation of the LHeC and the LHC

The present note relies on the recently published conceptual design report of the LHeC and extends the first contribution to the European strategy debate in emphasising the role of the LHeC to complement and complete the high luminosity LHC programme. The brief discussion therefore focuses on the importance of high precision PDF and $α_s$ determinations for the physics beyond the Standard Model (GUTs, SUSY, Higgs). Emphasis is also given to the importance of high parton density phenomena in nuclei and their relevance to the heavy ion physics programme at the LHC.

The ABM parton distributions tuned to LHC data

We present a global fit of parton distributions at next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) in QCD. The fit is based on the world data for deep-inelastic scattering, fixed-target data for the Drell-Yan process and includes, for the first time, data from the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) for the Drell-Yan process and the hadro-production of top-quark pairs. The analysis applies the fixed-flavor number scheme for n_f=3,4,5, uses the MS-bar scheme for the strong coupling α_s and the heavy-quark masses and keeps full account of the correlations among all non-perturbative parameters. At NNLO this returns the values of α_s(M_Z) = 0.1132 +- 0.0011 and m_t(pole) = 171.2 +- 2.4 GeV for the top-quark pole mass. The fit results are used to compute benchmark cross sections for Higgs production at the LHC to NNLO accuracy. We compare our results to those obtained by other groups and show that differences can be linked to different theoretical descriptions of the underlying physical processes.

The top quark and Higgs boson masses and the stability of the electroweak vacuum

The ATLAS and CMS experiments observed a particle at the LHC with a mass $\approx 126$ GeV, which is compatible with the Higgs boson of the Standard Model. A crucial question is, if for such a Higgs mass value, one could extrapolate the model up to high scales while keeping the minimum of the scalar potential that breaks the electroweak symmetry stable. Vacuum stability requires indeed the Higgs boson mass to be $M_H \gsim 129 \pm 1$ GeV, but the precise value depends critically on the input top quark pole mass which is usually taken to be the one measured at the Tevatron, $m_t^{\rm exp}=173.2 \pm 0.9$ GeV. However, for an unambiguous and theoretically well-defined determination of the top quark mass one should rather use the total cross section for top quark pair production at hadron colliders. Confronting the latest predictions of the inclusive $p \bar p \to t\bar t +X$ cross section up to next-to-next-to-leading order in QCD to the experimental measurement at the Tevatron, we determine the running mass in the $\bar{\rm MS}$-scheme to be $m_t^{\bar{\rm MS}}(m_t) = 163.3 \pm 2.7$ GeV which gives a top quark pole mass of $m_t^{\rm pole}= 173.3 \pm 2.8$ GeV. This leads to the vacuum stability constraint $M_H \geq 129.8 \pm 5.6$ GeV to which a $\approx 126$ GeV Higgs boson complies as the uncertainty is large. A very precise assessment of the stability of the electroweak vacuum can only be made at a future high-energy electron-positron collider, where the top quark pole mass could be determined with a few hundred MeV accuracy.

A Large Hadron Electron Collider at CERN: Report on the Physics and Design Concepts for Machine and Detector

The physics programme and the design are described of a new collider for particle and nuclear physics, the Large Hadron Electron Collider (LHeC), in which a newly built electron beam of 60 GeV, up to possibly 140 GeV, energy collides with the intense hadron beams of the LHC. Compared to HERA, the kinematic range covered is extended by a factor of twenty in the negative four-momentum squared, $Q^2$, and in the inverse Bjorken $x$, while with the design luminosity of $10^{33}$ cm$^{-2}$s$^{-1}$ the LHeC is projected to exceed the integrated HERA luminosity by two orders of magnitude. The physics programme is devoted to an exploration of the energy frontier, complementing the LHC and its discovery potential for physics beyond the Standard Model with high precision deep inelastic scattering measurements. These are designed to investigate a variety of fundamental questions in strong and electroweak interactions. The physics programme also includes electron-deuteron and electron-ion scattering in a $(Q^2, 1/x)$ range extended by four orders of magnitude as compared to previous lepton-nucleus DIS experiments for novel investigations of neutron's and nuclear structure, the initial conditions of Quark-Gluon Plasma formation and further quantum chromodynamic phenomena. The LHeC may be realised either as a ring-ring or as a linac-ring collider. Optics and beam dynamics studies are presented for both versions, along with technical design considerations on the interaction region, magnets and further components, together with a design study for a high acceptance detector. Civil engineering and installation studies are presented for the accelerator and the detector. The LHeC can be built within a decade and thus be operated while the LHC runs in its high-luminosity phase. It thus represents a major opportunity for progress in particle physics exploiting the investment made in the LHC.

Determination of the charm-quark mass in the MS-bar scheme using charm production data from deep inelastic scattering at HERA

We determine the charm-quark mass mc(mc) in the MS-bar scheme using measurements of charm production in deep-inelastic ep scattering at HERA in the kinematic range of photon virtuality from 5 to 1000 GeV squared and Bjorken scaling variable from 0.0001 to 0.5. The extraction of charm quark mass from this process with space-like kinematics provides complementary information to results from hadronic processes. The QCD analysis of the HERA data yields a value of mc(mc) of 1.27 plus minus 0.05(exp) plus 0.06 minus 0.01(scale) GeV at next-to-leading order and mc(mc) of 1.36 plus minus 0.04(exp) plus 0.04 minus 0.00 (scale) plus minus 0.1(theory) GeV at approximate next-to-next-to-leading order. The results are consistent with and of comparable precision as the world average.

On top-pair hadro-production at next-to-next-to-leading order

We study the QCD corrections at next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) to the cross section for the hadronic pair-production of top quarks. We present new results in the high-energy limit using the well-known framework of k_t-factorization. We combine these findings with the known threshold corrections and present improved approximate NNLO results over the full kinematic range. This approach is employed to quantify the residual theoretical uncertainty of the approximate NNLO results which amounts to about 4% for the Tevatron and 5% for the LHC cross-section predictions. Our analytic results in the high-energy limit will provide an important check on future computations of the complete NNLO cross sections.

Parton distribution functions and benchmark cross sections at NNLO

We present a determination of parton distribution functions (ABM11) and the strong coupling constant alpha_s at next-to-leading order and next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) in QCD based on world data for deep-inelastic scattering and fixed-target data for the Drell-Yan process. The analysis is performed in the fixed-flavor number scheme for n_f=3,4,5 and uses the MSbar-scheme for alpha_s and the heavy-quark masses. At NNLO we obtain the value alpha_s(M_Z) = 0.1134 +- 0.0011. The fit results are used to compute benchmark cross sections at hadron colliders to NNLO accuracy and to compare to data from the LHC.

PDF fit in the fixed-flavor-number scheme

We discuss the heavy-quark contribution to deep inelastic scattering in the scheme with $n_f=3,4,5$ fixed flavors. Based on the recent ABM11 PDF analysis of world data for deep-inelastic scattering and fixed-target data for the Drell-Yan process with the running-mass definition for heavy quarks we show that fixed flavor number scheme is sufficient for describing the deep-inelastic-scattering data in the entire kinematic range. We compare with other PDF sets and comment on the implications for measuring the strong coupling constant $α_s(M_Z)$.

Progress on double-logarithmic large-x and small-x resummations for (semi-)inclusive hard processes

Over the past few years considerable progress has been made on the resummation of double-logarithmically enhanced threshold (large-x) and high-energy (small-x) higher-order contributions to the splitting functions for parton and fragmentation distributions and to the coefficient functions for inclusive deep-inelastic scattering and semi-inclusive e^+e^- annihilation. We present an overview of the methods which allow, in many cases, to derive the coefficients of the highest three logarithms at all orders in the strong coupling from next-to-next-to-leading order results in massless perturbative QCD. Some representative analytical and numerical results are shown, and the present limitations of these resummations are discussed.

$O(α_s)$ Heavy Flavor Corrections to Charged Current Deep-Inelastic Scattering in Mellin Space

We provide a fast and precise Mellin-space implementation of the $O(α_s)$ heavy flavor Wilson coefficients for charged current deep inelastic scattering processes. They are of importance for the extraction of the strange quark distribution in neutrino-nucleon scattering and the QCD analyses of the HERA charged current data. Errors in the literature are corrected. We also discuss a series of more general parton parameterizations in Mellin space.

Higher order constraints on the Higgs production rate from fixed-target DIS data

The constraints of fixed-target DIS data in fits of parton distributions including QCD corrections to next-to-next-to leading order are studied. We point out a potential problem in the analysis of the NMC data which can lead to inconsistencies in the extracted value for alpha_s(M_Z) and the gluon distribution at higher orders in QCD. The implications for predictions of rates for Standard Model Higgs boson production at hadron colliders are investigated. We conclude that the current range of excluded Higgs boson masses at the Tevatron appears to be much too large.

On the Next-to-Next-to-Leading Order Evolution of Flavour-Singlet Fragmentation Functions

We present the third-order contributions to the quark-gluon and gluon-quark timelike splitting functions for the evolution of fragmentation functions in perturbative QCD. These quantities have been derived by studying physical evolution kernels for photon- and Higgs-exchange structure functions in deep inelastic scattering and their counterparts in semi-inclusive annihilation, together with constraints from the momentum sum rule and the supersymmetric limit. For this purpose we have also calculated the second-order coefficient functions for one-hadron inclusive Higgs decay in the heavy-top limit. A numerically tolerable uncertainty remains for the quark-gluon splitting function, which does not affect the endpoint logarithms for small and large momentum fractions. We briefly discuss these limits and illustrate the numerical impact of the third-order corrections. Compact and accurate parametrizations are provided for all third-order timelike splitting functions.

We present a program to calculate the total cross section for top-quark pair production in hadronic collisions. The program takes into account recent theoretical developments such as approximate next-to-next-to-leading order perturbative QCD corrections and it allows for studies of the theoretical uncertainty by separate variations of the factorization and renormalization scales. In addition it offers the possibility to obtain the cross section as a function of the running top-quark mass. The program can also be applied to a hypothetical fourth quark family provided the QCD couplings are standard.

AutoDipole - Automated generation of dipole subtraction terms -

We present an automated generation of the subtraction terms for next-to-leading order QCD calculations in the Catani-Seymour dipole formalism. For a given scattering process with n external particles our Mathematica package generates all dipole terms, allowing for both massless and massive dipoles. The numerical evaluation of the subtraction terms proceeds with MadGraph, which provides Fortran code for the necessary scattering amplitudes. Checks of the numerical stability are discussed.

Heavy-quark deep-inelastic scattering with a running mass

We study the production of heavy quarks in deep-inelastic scattering within perturbative QCD. As a novelty, we employ for the first time the running mass definition in the MSbar scheme for deep-inelastic charm and bottom production. We observe an improved stability of the perturbative expansion and a reduced theoretical uncertainty due to variations of the renormalization and factorization scales. As our best estimate we extract from a global fit to fixed-target and HERA collider data for the charm-quark an MSbar mass of m_c(m_c) = 1.01 +- 0.09 (exp) +- 0.03 (th) GeV.

Higher-order predictions for splitting functions and coefficient functions from physical evolution kernels

We have studied the physical evolution kernels for nine non-singlet observables in deep-inelastic scattering (DIS), semi-inclusive e^+e^-annihilation and the Drell-Yan (DY) process, and for the flavour-singlet case of the photon- and heavy-top Higgs-exchange structure functions (F_2, F_phi) in DIS. All known contributions to these kernels show an only single-logarithmic large-x enhancement at all powers of 1-x. Conjecturing that this behaviour persists to (all) higher orders, we have predicted the highest three (DY: two) double logarithms of the higher-order non-singlet coefficient functions and of the four-loop singlet splitting functions. The coefficient-function predictions canbe written as exponentiations of 1/N-suppressed contributions in Mellin-N space which, however, are less predictive than the well-known exponentiation of the ln^k N terms.

NNLO Benchmarks for Gauge and Higgs Boson Production at TeV Hadron Colliders

The inclusive production cross sections for $W^+, W^-$ and $Z^0$-bosons form important benchmarks for the physics at hadron colliders. We perform a detailed comparison of the predictions for these standard candles based on recent next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) parton parameterizations and new analyses including the combined HERA data, compare to all available experimental results, and discuss the predictions for present and upcoming RHIC, SPS, Tevatron and LHC energies. The rates for gauge boson production at the LHC can be rather confidently predicted with an accuracy of better than about 10% at NNLO. We also present detailed NNLO predictions for the Higgs boson production cross sections for Tevatron and LHC energies (1.96, 7, 8, 14 TeV), and propose a possible method to monitor the gluon distribution experimentally in the kinematic region close to the mass range expected for the Higgs boson. The production cross sections of the Higgs boson at the LHC are presently predicted with an accuracy of about 10--17%. The inclusion of the NNLO contributions is mandatory for achieving such accuracies since the total uncertainties are substantially larger at NLO.

On higher-order flavour-singlet splitting and coefficient functions at large x

We discuss the large-x behaviour of the splitting functions P_qg and P_gq and of flavour-singlet coefficient functions, such as the gluon contributions C_2,g and C_L,g to the structure functions F_2,L, in massless perturbative QCD. These quantities are suppressed by one or two powers of 1-x with respect to the 1/(1-x) terms which are the subject of the well-known threshold exponentiation. We show that the double-logarithmic contributions to P_qg, P_gq and C_L at order alpha_s^4 can be predicted from known third-order results and present, as a first step towards a full all-order generalization, the leading-logarithmic large-x behaviour of P_qg, P_gq and C_2,g at all orders in alpha_s.

The 3-, 4-, and 5-flavor NNLO Parton from Deep-Inelastic-Scattering Data and at Hadron Colliders

We determine the parton distribution functions (PDFs) in a next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) QCD-analysis of the inclusive neutral-current deep-inelastic-scattering (DIS) world data combined with the neutri{-}no-nucleon DIS di-muon data and the fixed-target Drell-Yan data. The PDF-evolution is performed in the $N_f = 3$ fixed-flavor scheme and supplementary sets of PDFs in the 4- and 5-flavor schemes are derived from the results in the 3-flavor scheme using matching conditions. The charm-quark DIS contribution is calculated in a general-mass variable-flavor-number (GMVFN) scheme interpolating between the zero-mass 4-flavor scheme at asymptotically large values of momentum transfer $Q^2$ and the 3-flavor scheme prescription of Buza-Matiounine-Smith-van Neerven (BMSN) at the value of $Q^2 = m_c^2$. The results in the GMVFN scheme are compared with those of the fixed-flavor scheme and other prescriptions used in global fits of PDFs. The strong coupling constant is measured at an accuracy of $\approx 1.5%$. We obtain at NNLO $α_s(M_Z^2) = 0.1135 \pm 0.0014$ in the fixed-flavor scheme and $α_s(M_Z^2) = 0.1129 \pm 0.0applying the BMSN-prescription. The implications for important standard candle and hard scattering processes at hadron colliders are illustrated. Predictions for cross sections of $W^{\pm}$- and $Z$-boson, the top-quark pair- and Higgs-boson production at the Tevatron and the LHC based on the 5-flavor PDFs of the present analysis are provided.014$

On Higgs-exchange DIS, physical evolution kernels and fourth-order splitting functions at large x

We present the coefficient functions for deep-inelastic scattering (DIS) via the exchange of a scalar phi directly coupling only to gluons, such as the Higgs boson in the limit of a very heavy top quark and n_f effectively massless light flavours, to the third order in perturbative QCD. The two-loop results are employed to construct the next-to-next-to-leading order physical evolution kernels for the system (F_2 F_phi) of flavour-singlet structure functions. The practical relevance of these kernels as an alternative to MSbar factorization is bedevilled by artificial double logarithms at small values of the scaling variable x, where the large top-mass limit ceases to be appropriate. However, they show an only single-logarithmic enhancement at large x. Conjecturing that this feature persists to the next order also in the present singlet case, the three-loop coefficient functions facilitate exact predictions (backed up by their particular colour structure) of the double-logarithmic contributions to the fourth-order singlet splitting functions, i.e., of the terms (1-x)^a ln^k(1-x) with k = 4, 5, 6 and k = 3, 4, 5, respectively, for the off-diagonal and diagonal quantities to all powers a in 1-x.

Third-order QCD corrections to the charged-current structure function F_3

We compute the coefficient function for the charge-averaged W^(+/-)-exchange structure function F_3 in deep-inelastic scattering (DIS) to the third order in massless perturbative QCD. Our new three-loop contribution to this quantity forms, at not too small values of the Bjorken variable x, the dominant part of the next-to-next-to-next-to-leading order corrections. It thus facilitates improved determinations of the strong coupling alpha_s and of 1/Q^2 power corrections from scaling violations measured in neutrino-nucleon DIS. The expansion of F_3 in powers of alpha_s is stable at all values of x relevant to measurements at high scales Q^2. At small x the third-order coefficient function is dominated by diagrams with the colour structure d_abc d^abc not present at lower orders. At large x the coefficient function for F_3 is identical to that of F_1 up to terms vanishing for x to 1.

Heavy-quark production in gluon fusion at two loops in QCD

We present the two-loop virtual QCD corrections to the production of heavy quarks in gluon fusion. The results are exact in the limit when all kinematical invariants are large compared to the mass of the heavy quark up to terms suppressed by powers of the heavy-quark mass. Our derivation uses a simple relation between massless and massive QCD scattering amplitudes as well as a direct calculation of the massive amplitude at two loops. The results presented here together with those obtained previously for quark-quark scattering form important parts of the next-to-next-to-leading order QCD corrections to heavy-quark production in hadron-hadron collisions.

The singular behavior of massive QCD amplitudes

We discuss the structure of infrared singularities in on-shell QCD amplitudes with massive partons and present a general factorization formula in the limit of small parton masses. The factorization formula gives rise to an all-order exponentiation of both, the soft poles in dimensional regularization and the large collinear logarithms of the parton masses. Moreover, it provides a universal relation between any on-shell amplitude with massive external partons and its corresponding massless amplitude. For the form factor of a heavy quark we present explicit results including the fixed-order expansion up to three loops in the small mass limit. For general scattering processes we show how our constructive method applies to the computation of all singularities as well as the constant (mass-independent) terms of a generic massive n-parton QCD amplitude up to the next-to-next-to-leading order corrections.

Higher-Order Corrections in Threshold Resummation

We extend the threshold resummation exponents G^N in Mellin-N space to the fourth logarithmic (N^3LL) order collecting the terms alpha_s^2 (alpha_s ln N)^n to all orders in the strong coupling constant as. Comparing the results to our previous three-loop calculations for deep-inelastic scattering (DIS), we derive the universal coefficients B_q and B_g governing the final-state jet functions to order alpha_s^3, extending the previous quark and gluon results by one and two orders. A curious relation is found at second order between these quantities, the splitting functions and the large-angle soft emissions in Drell-Yan type processes. We study the numerical effect of the N^3LL corrections using both the fully exponentiated form and the expansion of the coefficient function in towers of logarithms.

Higher-Order Soft Corrections to Lepton Pair and Higgs Boson Production

Utilizing recent three-loop results on the quark and gluon splitting functions and form factors, we derive the complete threshold-enhanced third-order (N^3LO) QCD corrections to the total cross sections for the production of lepton pairs and the Higgs boson in hadron collisions. These results, for the latter case obtained in the heavy top-quark limit, are employed to extend the threshold resummation for these processes to the fourth logarithmic order. We investigate the numerical impact of the higher-order corrections for Higgs boson production at the Tevatron and the LHC. Our results, suitably treated in Mellin N-space, provide a sufficiently accurate approximation to the full N^3LO contributions. Corrections of about 5% at the LHC and 10% at the Tevatron are found for typical Higgs masses. The N^3LO predictions exhibit a considerably reduced dependence on the renormalization scale with, for the first time, stationary points close to the Higgs mass.

Third-order QCD results on form factors and coefficient functions

We summarize recent higher-order QCD results based, directly or indirectly, on the Mellin-space computation of the next-to-next-to-leading-order splitting functions governing the evolution of hadronic parton distributions. Three-Loop Results for Quark and Gluon Form Factors

We study the photon-quark-quark and Higgs-gluon-gluon form factors for on-shell massless quarks and gluons in perturbative QCD. Previous third-order results for the quark case are extended by calculating the fermion-loop contributions up to the finite terms in dimensional regularization. For the gluon case the complete set of infrared poles at three loops is derived. Using the exponentiation of the form factor, the latter results are employed to extract a function entering the infrared factorization of general third-order amplitudes. We evaluate the infrared finite absolute ratio of the time-like and space-like gluon form factors up to the fourth order in the strong coupling constant. The result supports previous indications that the perturbative expansion of the Higgs boson production rate at the LHC is under control.

The Longitudinal Structure Function at the Third Order

We compute the complete third-order contributions to the coefficient functions for the longitudinal structure function F_L, thus completing the next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) description of unpolarized electromagnetic deep-inelastic scattering in massless perturbative QCD. Our exact results agree with determinations of low even-integer Mellin moments and of the leading small-x terms in the flavour-singlet sector. In this letter we present compact and accurate parametrizations of the results and illustrate the numerical impact of the NNLO corrections.

The Three-Loop Splitting Functions in QCD: The Singlet Case

We compute the next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) contributions to the splitting functions governing the evolution of the unpolarized flavour-singlet parton densities in perturbative QCD. The exact expressions are presented in both Mellin-N and Bjorken-x space. We also provide accurate parametrizations for practical applications. Our results agree with all partial results available in the literature. As in the non-singlet case, the correct leading logarithmic predictions for small momentum fractions x do not provide good estimates of the respective complete splitting functions. We investigate the size of the corrections and the stability of the NNLO evolution under variation of the renormalization scale. The perturbative expansion appears to converge rapidly at x >~ 10^-3. Relatively large third-order corrections are found at smaller values of x.

Non-Singlet Structure Functions at Three Loops: Fermionic Contributions

We compute the fermionic (n_f) contributions to the flavour non-singlet structure functions in unpolarized electromagnetic deep-inelastic scattering at third order of massless perturbative QCD. Complete results are presented for the corresponding nf-parts of the three-loop anomalous dimension and the three-loop coefficient functions for the structure functions F_2 and F_L. Our results agree with all partial and approximate results available in the literature. The present calculation also facilitates a complete determination of the threshold-resummation parameters B_2 and D_2^DIS of which only the sum was known so far, thus completing the information required for the next-to-next-to-leading logarithmic resummation. We find that D_2^DIS vanishes in the MSbar scheme.

Instantons in Deep-Inelastic Scattering - The Simplest Process -

Instanton calculations in QCD are generically plagued by infrared divergencies associated with the integration over the instanton size $ρ$. Here, we demonstrate explicitly that the typical inverse hard momentum scale ${\mathcal Q}^{-1}$ in deep-inelastic scattering provides a dynamical infrared cutoff for the size parameter $ρ$. Hence, deep-inelastic scattering may be viewed as a distinguished process for studying manifestations of QCD-instantons. For clarity, we restrict the explicit discussion to the simplest chirality-violating process, $γ^{\ast}+{\rm g}\rightarrow \overline{{\rm q}_{L}}+{\rm q}_{R}$. We calculate the corresponding fixed angle cross-section as well as the contributions to the gluon structure functions, ${\mathcal F}_{2g}$ and ${\mathcal F}_{Lg}$, within standard instanton perturbation theory in leading semi-classical approximation. To this approximation, fixed-angle scattering processes at high $Q^2$ are reliably calculable. In the Bjorken limit, the considered instanton-induced process gives a scaling contribution to ${\mathcal F}_{2g}(x,Q^{2})$ and the Callan-Gross relation holds.
