Two-body neutral Coulomb system in a magnetic field at rest: from Hydrogen atom to positronium

A simple locally accurate uniform approximation for the nodeless wavefunction is constructed for a {\it neutral} system of two Coulomb charges of different masses $(-q,m_1)$ and $(q,m_2)$ at rest in a constant uniform magnetic field for the states of positive and negative parity, ${(1s_0)}$ and ${(2p_0)}$, respectively. It is shown that by keeping the mass and charge of one of the bodies fixed, all systems with different second body masses are related. This allows one to consider the second body as infinitely-massive and to take such a system as basic. Three physical systems are considered in details: the Hydrogen atom with (in)-finitely massive proton (deuteron, triton) and the positronium atom $(-e,e)$. We derive the Riccati-Bloch and Generalized-Bloch equations, which describe the domains of small and large distances, respectively. Based on the interpolation of the small and large distance behavior of the logarithm of the wavefunction, a compact 10-parametric function is proposed. Taken as a variational trial function it provides accuracy of not less than 6 significant digits (s.d.) ($\lesssim 10^{-6}$ in relative deviation) for the total energy in the whole domain of considered magnetic fields $[0\,,\,10^4]$ a.u. and not less than 3 s.d. for the quadrupole moment $Q_{zz}$. In order to get reference points the Lagrange Mesh Method with 16K mesh points was used to get from 10 to 6 s.d. in energy from small to large magnetic fields. Based on the Riccati-Bloch equation the first 100 perturbative coefficients for the energy, in the form of rational numbers, are calculated and, using the Padé-Borel re-summation procedure, the energy is found with not less than 10 s.d. at magnetic fields $\leq 1$\,a.u.

Ultra-Compact accurate wave functions for He-like and Li-like iso-electronic sequences and variational calculus. III. Spin-quartet state of the Lithium sequence

As a continuation of Part I, dedicated to the ground state of He-like and Li-like isoelectronic sequences for nuclear charges $Z \leq 20$, and Part II, dedicated to two excited states of He-like sequence, two ultra-compact wave functions in the form of generalized Guevara-Harris-Turbiner functions are constructed for Li-like sequence. They describe accurately the domain of applicability of the Quantum Mechanics of Coulomb Charges (QMCC) for energies (2-3 significant digits (s.d.)) of the spin-quartet state $1^40^+$ of Li-like ions (in static approximation with point-like, infinitely heavy nuclei). Variational parameters are fitted in $Z$ by 2nd degree polynomials. The most accurate ultra-compact function leads to the absolute accuracy $\sim 10^{-3}$\,a.u. for energy, and $\sim 10^{-4}$ for the normalized electron-nuclear cusp parameter for $Z \leq 20$. Critical charge $Z=Z_B$, where the ultra-compact trial function for the $1^40^+$ state looses its square-integrability, is estimated, $Z_B(1^4\,0^+) \sim 1.26 - 1.30$. As a complement to Part I, square integrability for the compact functions constructed for the {\it ground, spin-doublet state} $1^2\,0^+$ of the Li-like sequence is discussed. The critical charge, for which these functions stop to be normalizable, is estimated as $Z_B( 1^2\,0^+) = 1.62 - 1.65$. It implies that at $Z=2$ - the negative helium ion He${}^-$ - both states $1^2\,0^+$ and $1^4\,0^+$ exist as states embedded to continuum.

Quantum and thermal fluctuations in quantum mechanics and field theories from a new version of semiclassical theory

We develop a new semiclassical approach, which starts with the density matrix given by the Euclidean time path integral with fixed coinciding endpoints, and proceed by identifying classical (minimal Euclidean action) path, to be referred to as {\it flucton}, which passes through this endpoint. Fluctuations around flucton path are included, by standard Feynman diagrams, previously developed for instantons. We calculate the Green function and evaluate the one loop determinant both by direct diagonalization of the fluctuation equation, and also via the trick with the Green functions. The two-loop corrections are evaluated by explicit Feynman diagrams, and some curious cancellation of logarithmic and polylog terms is observed. The results are fully consistent with large-distance asymptotics obtained in quantum mechanics. Two classic examples -- quartic double-well and sine-Gordon potentials -- are discussed in detail, while power-like potential and quartic anharmonic oscillator are discussed in brief. Unlike other semiclassical methods, like WKB, we do not use the Schrödinger equation, and all the steps generalize to multi-dimensional or quantum fields cases straightforwardly.

Three-body quantum Coulomb problem: analytic continuation

The second (unphysical) critical charge in the 3-body quantum Coulomb system of a nucleus of positive charge $Z$ and mass $m_p$, and two electrons, predicted by F~Stillinger has been calculated to be equal to $Z_{B}^{\infty}\ =\ 0.904854$ and $Z_{B}^{m_p}\ =\ 0.905138$ for infinite and finite (proton) mass $m_p$, respectively. It is shown that in both cases, the ground state energy $E(Z)$ (analytically continued beyond the first critical charge $Z_c$, for which the ionization energy vanishes, to $Re Z < Z_c$) has a square-root branch point with exponent 3/2 at $Z=Z_B$ in the complex $Z$-plane. Based on analytic continuation, the second, excited, spin-singlet bound state of negative hydrogen ion H${}^-$ is predicted to be at -0.51554 a.u. (-0.51531 a.u. for the finite proton mass $m_p$). The first critical charge $Z_c$ is found accurately for a finite proton mass $m_p$ in the Lagrange mesh method, $Z^{m_p}_{c}\ =\ 0.911\, 069\, 724\, 655$.

Three-loop Correction to the Instanton Density. I. The Quartic Double Well Potential

This paper deals with quantum fluctuations near the classical instanton configuration. Feynman diagrams in the instanton background are used for the calculation of the tunneling amplitude (the instanton density) in the three-loop order for quartic double-well potential. The result for the three-loop contribution coincides in six significant figures with one given long ago by J.~Zinn-Justin. Unlike the two-loop contribution where all involved Feynman integrals are rational numbers, in the three-loop case Feynman diagrams can contain irrational contributions.

Three-loop Correction to the Instanton Density. II. The Sine-Gordon potential

In this second paper on quantum fluctuations near the classical instanton configurations, see {\em Phys. Rev. D \bf 92}, 025046 (2015) and arXiv:1501.03993, we focus on another well studied quantum-mechanical problem, the one-dimensional Sine-Gordon potential (the Mathieu potential). Using only the tools from quantum field theory, the Feynman diagrams in the instanton background, we calculate the tunneling amplitude (the instanton density) to the three-loop order. The result confirms (to seven significant figures) the one recently recalculated by G. V. Dunne and M. Ünsal, {\it Phys. Rev. \bf D 89}, 105009 (2014) from the resurgence perspective. As in the double well potential case, we found that the largest contribution is given by the diagrams originating from the Jacobian. We again observe that in the three-loop case individual Feynman diagrams contain irrational contributions, while their sum does not.

Nuclear critical charge for two-electron ion in Lagrange mesh method

The Schroedinger equation for two electrons in the field of a charged fixed center $Z$ is solved with the Lagrange mesh method for charges close to the critical charge $Z_{cr}$. We confirm the value of the nuclear critical charge $Z_{cr}$ recently calculated in Estienne et al. {\em Phys. Rev. Lett. \bf 112}, 173001 (2014) to 11 decimal digits using an inhomogeneous (non-uniform) three-dimensional lattice of size $70 \times 70 \times 20$. We show that the ground state energy for H$^-$ is accurate to 14 decimals on the lattice $50 \times 50 \times 40$ in comparison with the highly accurate result by Nakashima-Nakatsuji, {\it J. Chem. Phys. \bf 127}, 224104 (2007).

Two charges on plane in a magnetic field: II. Moving neutral quantum system across a magnetic field

The moving neutral system of two Coulomb charges on a plane subject to a constant magnetic field $B$ perpendicular to the plane is considered. It is shown that the composite system of finite total mass is bound for any center-of-mass momentum $P$ and magnetic field strength; the energy of the ground state is calculated accurately using a variational approach. Their accuracy is cross-checked in a Lagrange-mesh method for $B=1$ a.u. and in a perturbation theory at small $B$ and $P$. The constructed trial function has the property of being a uniform approximation of the exact eigenfunction. For a Hydrogen atom and a Positronium a double perturbation theory in $B$ and $P$ is developed and the first corrections are found algebraically. A phenomenon of a sharp change of energy behavior for a certain center-of-mass momentum and a fixed magnetic field is indicated.

$F_4$ Quantum Integrable, rational and trigonometric models: space-of-orbits view

Algebraic-rational nature of the four-dimensional, $F_4$-invariant integrable quantum Hamiltonians, both rational and trigonometric, is revealed and reviewed. It was shown that being written in $F_4$ Weyl invariants, polynomial and exponential, respectively, both similarity-transformed Hamiltonians are in algebraic form, they are quite similar the second order differential operators with polynomial coefficients; the flat metric in the Laplace-Beltrami operator has polynomial (in invariants) matrix elements. Their potentials are calculated for the first time: they are meromorphic (rational) functions with singularities at the boundaries of the configuration space. Ground state eigenfunctions are algebraic functions in a form of polynomials in some degrees. Both Hamiltonians preserve the same infinite flag of polynomial spaces with characteristic vector $(1, 2, 2, 3)$, it manifests exact solvability. A particular integral common for both models is derived. The first polynomial eigenfunctions are presented explicitly.

On 1/Z expansion for two-electron systems

The $1/Z$-expansion for the Coulomb system of infinitely massive center of charge Z and two electrons is discussed. Numerical deficiency in Baker et al, {\em Phys. Rev. \bf A41}, 1247 (1990) is indicated which continue to raise doubts in correctness of their calculations of the higher order coefficients in $1/Z$-expansion expressed in Refs.[4-5]. It is shown that a minor modification of a few first coefficients found in Ref.[3] allows to calculate the ground state energies at $Z\ =\ 1, 2,\ldots \ 10$ (as well as at $Z > 10$) with a portion of 15th decimal digit in comparison with highly accurate calculations by C. Schwartz and by Nakashima-Nakatsuji. Ground state energies of two-electron ions $Z=11\ (Na^{9+})$ and $Z=12\ (Mg^{10+})$ are found with 14 decimal digits.

The ground state of the ${\rm H}_3^+$ molecular ion: physics behind

Five physics mechanisms of interaction leading to the binding of the ${\rm H}_3^+$ molecular ion are identified. They are realized in a form of variational trial functions and their respective total energies are calculated. Each of them provides subsequently the most accurate approximation for the Born-Oppenheimer (BO) ground state energy among (two-three-seven)-parametric trial functions being correspondingly, H$_2$-molecule plus proton (two variational parameters), H$_2^+$-ion plus H-atom (three variational parameters) and generalized Guillemin-Zener (seven variational parameters). These trial functions are chosen following a criterion of physical adequacy. They include the electronic correlation in the exponential form $\sim\exp{(γr_{12})}$, where $γ$ is a variational parameter. Superpositions of two different mechanisms of binding are investigated and a particular one, which is a generalized Guillemin-Zener plus H$_2$-molecule plus proton (ten variational parameters), provides the total energy at the equilibrium of $E=-1.3432$\ a.u. The superposition of three mechanisms: generalized Guillemin-Zener plus (H$_2$ -molecule plus proton) plus (H$_2^+$ -ion plus H) (fourteen parameters) leads to the total energy which deviates from the best known BO energy to $\sim 0.0004$\ a.u., {\it it reproduces two-three significant digits in exact, non-BO total energy}. In general, our variational energy agrees in two-three-four significant digits with the most accurate results available at present as well as major expectation values.

Two charges on a plane in a magnetic field: hidden algebra, (particular) integrability, polynomial eigenfunctions

The quantum mechanics of two Coulomb charges on a plane $(e_1, m_1)$ and $(e_2, m_2)$ subject to a constant magnetic field $B$ perpendicular to the plane is considered. Four integrals of motion are explicitly indicated. It is shown that for two physically-important particular cases, namely that of two particles of equal Larmor frequencies, ${e_c} \propto \frac{e_1}{m_1}-\frac{e_2}{m_2}=0$ (e.g. two electrons) and one of a neutral system (e.g. the electron - positron pair, Hydrogen atom) at rest (the center-of-mass momentum is zero) some outstanding properties occur. They are the most visible in double polar coordinates in CMS $(R, ϕ)$ and relative $(ρ, φ)$ coordinate systems: (i) eigenfunctions are factorizable, all factors except one with the explicit $ρ$-dependence are found analytically, they have definite relative angular momentum, (ii) dynamics in $ρ$-direction is the same for both systems, it corresponds to a funnel-type potential and it has hidden $sl(2)$ algebra; at some discrete values of dimensionless magnetic fields $b \leq 1$, (iii) particular integral(s) occur, (iv) the hidden $sl(2)$ algebra emerges in finite-dimensional representation, thus, the system becomes {\it quasi-exactly-solvable} and (v) a finite number of polynomial eigenfunctions in $ρ$ appear. Nine families of eigenfunctions are presented explicitly.

Two charges on plane in a magnetic field I. "Quasi-equal" charges and neutral quantum system at rest cases

Low-lying bound states for the problem of two Coulomb charges of finite masses on a plane subject to a constant magnetic field $B$ perpendicular to the plane are considered. Major emphasis is given to two systems: two charges with the equal charge-to-mass ratio (quasi-equal charges) and neutral systems with concrete results for the Hydrogen atom and two electrons (quantum dot). It is shown that for these two cases, but when a neutral system is at rest (the center-of-mass momentum is zero), some outstanding properties occur: in double polar coordinates in CMS $(R, ϕ)$ and relative $(ρ, φ)$ coordinate systems (i) the eigenfunctions are factorizable, all factors except for $ρ$-dependent are found analytically, they have definite relative angular momentum, (ii) dynamics in $ρ$-direction is the same for both systems being described by a funnel-type potential; (iii) at some discrete values of dimensionless magnetic fields $b \leq 1$ the system becomes {\it quasi-exactly-solvable} and a finite number of eigenfunctions in $ρ$ are polynomials. The variational method is employed. Trial functions are based on combining for the phase of a wavefunction (a) the WKB expansion at large distances, (b) the perturbation theory at small distances (c) with a form of the known analytically (quasi-exactly-solvable) eigenfunctions. For the lowest states with relative magnetic quantum numbers $s=0,1,2$ this approximation gives not less than 7 s.d., 8 s.d., 9 s.d., respectively, for the total energy $E(B)$ for magnetic fields $0.049\, \text{a.u.} < B < 2000\, \text{a.u.} $ (Hydrogen atom) and $0.025\, \text{a.u.}\eqslantless B \eqslantless 1000\, \text{a.u.} $ (two electrons).

Two charges on plane in a magnetic field: special trajectories

A classical mechanics of two Coulomb charges on a plane $(e_1, m_1)$ and $(e_2, m_2)$ subject to a constant magnetic field perpendicular to a plane is considered. Special "superintegrable" trajectories (circular and linear) for which the distance between charges remains unchanged are indicated as well as their respectful constants of motion. The number of the independent constants of motion for special trajectories is larger for generic ones. A classification of pairs of charges for which special trajectories occur is given. The special trajectories for three particular cases of two electrons, (electron - positron), (electron - $α$-particle) are described explicitly.

A note about the ground state of the ${\rm H}_3^+$ hydrogen molecular ion

Three simple $7-, (7+3)-, 10-$parametric trial functions for the ${\rm H}_3^+$ molecular ion are presented. Each of them provides subsequently the most accurate approximation for the Born-Oppenheimer ground state energy among several-parametric trial functions. These trial functions are chosen following a criterion of physical adequacy and includes the electronic correlation in the exponential form $\sim\exp{(γr_{12})}$, where $γ$ is a variational parameter. The Born-Oppenheimer energy is found to be $E=-1.340 34, -1.340 73, -1.341 59$\,a.u., respectively, for optimal equilateral triangular configuration of protons with the equilibrium interproton distance $R=1.65$\,a.u. The variational energy agrees in three significant digits (s.d.) with most accurate results available at present as well as for major expectation values.

Critical charges of simple Coulomb molecular systems: One-two electron case

Let us consider some Coulomb systems of several infinitely massive centers of charge Z and one-two electrons: $(Z,e)$, $(2Z,e)$, $(3Z,e)$, $(4Z,e)$, $(2Z,e,e)$, $(3Z,e,e)$. It is shown that the physical, integer charges $Z=1,2,...$ do not play a distinguished role in total energy and equilibrium distance of a system giving no indication to a charge quantization. By definition, a critical charge $Z_{cr}$ for a given Coulomb system $(nZ,e)$ or $(nZ,e,e)$ is a charge which separates a domain of the existence of bound states from a domain of unbound ones (continuum). For all above-mentioned systems critical charges $Z_c$ as well as equilibrium geometrical configurations are found. For all studied systems there was obtained an indication to a square-root singularity at $Z=Z_{cr}$.

Helium- and Lithium-like ionic sequences: Critical charges

In non-relativistic quantum mechanics we study the Coulomb systems of infinitely massive center of charge Z and two-three electrons: $(Z,e,e)$ and $(Z,e,e,e)$. It is shown that in both cases the total energy curve in $Z$ is smooth, without any visible irregularities. Thus, for both systems the physical integer charges $Z=1,2,...$ do not play a distinguished role as would be associated with charge quantization. By definition, a critical charge $Z_{cr}$ is a charge which separates a domain of the existence of bound states from a domain of unbound ones (continuum). For both systems the critical charges are found, $Z_{cr,2e}=0.91085$ and $Z_{cr,3e}=2.009$, respectively. Based on numerical analysis, the Puiseux expansion in fractional powers of $(Z-Z_{cr})$ is constructed for both systems. Our results indicate the existence of a square-root branch point singularity at $Z_{cr}$ with exponent 3/2. A connection between the critical charge and the radius of convergence of 1/Z-expansion is briefly discussed.

Sutherland-type Trigonometric Models, Trigonometric Invariants and Multivariate Polynomials. III. $E_8$ case

It is shown that the $E_8$ trigonometric Olshanetsky-Perelomov Hamiltonian, when written in terms of the Fundamental Trigonometric Invariants (FTI), is in algebraic form, i.e., has polynomial coefficients, and preserves two infinite flags of polynomial spaces marked by the Weyl (co)-vector and $E_8$ highest root (both in the basis of simple roots) as characteristic vectors. The explicit form of the Hamiltonian in new variables has been obtained both by direct calculation and by means of the orbit function technique. It is shown a triangularity of the Hamiltonian in the bases of orbit functions and of algebraic monomials ordered through Weyl heights. Examples of first eigenfunctions are presented.

Charged Hydrogenic, Helium and Helium-Hydrogenic Molecular Chains in a Strong Magnetic Field

A non-relativistic classification of charged molecular hydrogenic, helium and mixed helium-hydrogenic chains with one or two electrons which can exist in a strong magnetic field $B \lesssim 10^{16} $G is given. It is shown that for both $1e-2e$ cases at the strongest studied magnetic fields the longest hydrogenic chain contains at most five protons indicating to the existence of the $\rm{H}_5^{4+}$ and $\rm{H}_5^{3+}$ ions, respectively. In the case of the helium chains the longest chains can exist at the strongest studied magnetic fields with three and four $\al-$particles for $1e-2e$ cases, respectively. For mixed helium-hydrogenic chains the number of heavy centers can reach five for highest magnetic fields studied. In general, for a fixed magnetic field two-electron chains are more bound than one-electron ones.

One-electron atomic-molecular ions containing Lithium in a strong magnetic field

The one-electron Li-containing Coulomb systems of atomic type $(li, e)$ and molecular type $(li, li, e)$, $(li, α, e)$ and $(li, p, e)$ are studied in the presence of a strong magnetic field $B \leq 10^{7}$ a.u. in the non-relativistic framework. They are considered at the Born-Oppenheimer approximation of zero order (infinitely massive centers) within the parallel configuration (molecular axis parallel to the magnetic field). The variational and Lagrange-mesh methods are employed in complement to each other. It is demonstrated that the molecular systems ${\rm LiH}^{3+}$, ${\rm LiHe}^{4+}$ and ${\rm Li}_{2}^{5+}$ can exist for sufficiently strong magnetic fields $B \gtrsim 10^{4}$ a.u. and that ${\rm Li}_{2}^{5+}$ can even be stable at magnetic fields typical of magnetars.

Sutherland-type Trigonometric Models, Trigonometric Invariants and Multivariable Polynomials. II. $E_7$ case

It is shown that the $E_7$ trigonometric Olshanetsky-Perelomov Hamiltonian, when written in terms of the Fundamental Trigonometric Invariants (FTI), is in algebraic form, i.e., has polynomial coefficients, and preserves the infinite flag of polynomial spaces with the characteristic vector $\vec α= (1,2,2,2,3,3,4)$. Its flag coincides with one of the minimal characteristic vector for the $E_7$ rational model.

Sutherland-type Trigonometric Models, Trigonometric Invariants and Multivariate Polynomials

It is conjectured that any trigonometric Olshanetsky-Perelomov Hamiltonian written in Fundamental Trigonometric Invariants (FTI) as coordinates takes an algebraic form and preserves an infinite flag of spaces of polynomials. It is shown that try-and-guess variables which led to the algebraic form of trigonometric Olshanetsky-Perelomov Hamiltonians related to root spaces of the classical $A_N, B_N, C_N, D_N, BC_N$ and exceptional $G_2, F_4$ Lie algebras are FTI. This conjecture is also confirmed for the trigonometric $E_6$ Olshanetsky-Perelomov Hamiltonian whose algebraic form is found with the use of FTI.
