How to delay death and look further into the future if you fall into a black hole

In this note, we present a pedagogical illustration of peculiar properties of motion in the vicinity and inside black holes. We discuss how a momentary impulse can modify the lifetime of an object radially falling into a Schwarzschild black hole down to singularity. The well known upper limit for a proper time spent within a horizon, in fact, requires an infinitely powerful kick. We calculate the proper time interval (perceived as personal lifetime of a falling observer) till the contact with the singularity, as well as the time interval in the Lemaître frame (which reflects how far into the future of the outer world a falling observer can look), for different values of the kick received by the falling body. We discuss the ideal strategy to increase both time intervals by the engine with a finite power. This example is suitable for university seminars for undergraduate students specializing in General Relativity and related astrophysical subjects.

Regular frames for spherically symmetric black holes revisited

We consider a space-time of a spherically symmetric black hole with one simple horizon. As a standard coordinate frame fails in its vicinity, this requires continuation across the horizon and constructing frames which are regular there. Up to now, several standard frames of such a kind are known. It was shown in literature before, how some of them can be united in one picture as different limits of a general scheme. However, some types of frames (the Kruskal-Szekeres and Lema\^ıtre ones) and transformations to them from the original one remained completely disjoint. We show that the Kruskal-Szekeres and Lema\^ıtre frames stem from the same root. Overall, our approach in some sense completes the procedure and gives the most general scheme. We relate the parameter of transformation $e_{0}$ to the specific energy of fiducial observers and show that in the limit $% e_{0}\rightarrow 0$ a homogeneous metric under the horizon can be obtained by a smooth limiting transition.

On strategies of motion under the black hole horizon

In this methodological paper we consider two problems an astronaut faces with under the black hole horizon in the Schwarzschild metric. 1) How to maximize the survival proper time. 2) How to make a visible part of the outer Universe as large as possible before hitting the singularity. Our consideration essentially uses the concept of peculiar velocities based on the "river model". Let an astronaut cross the horizon from the outside. We reproduce from the first principles the known result that point 1) requires that an astronaut turn off the engine near the horizon and follow the path with the momentum equal to zero. We also show that point 2) requires maximizing the peculiar velocity of the observer. Both goals 1) and 2) require, in general, different strategies inconsistent with each other that coincide at the horizon only. The concept of peculiar velocities introduced in a direct analogy with cosmology, and its application for the problems studied in the present paper can be used in advanced general relativity courses.

Cosmological redshift, recession velocities and acceleration measures in FRW cosmologies

In this methodological note we discuss several topics related to interpretation of some basic cosmological principles. We demonstrate that one of the key points is the usage of synchronous reference frames. The Friedmann-Robertson-Walker one is the most known example of them. We describe how different quantities behave in this frame. Special attention is paid to potentially observable parameters. We discuss different variants for choosing measures of velocity and acceleration representing the Hubble flow, and present illustrative calculations of apparent acceleration in flat $ΛCDM$ model for various epochs. We generalize description of the "tethered" galaxies problem for different velocity measures and equations of state, and illustrate time behavior of velocities and redshifts in the $ΛCDM$ model.

The Hubble flow: an observer's perspective

In this methodological note we discuss some details and peculiarities of the cosmic expansion as viewed by a realistic observer. We show that the velocity $v_Θ$ related to a change (measured by observer's clock) of the angular distance, plays an important role in formation of a meaningful observed picture of the expansion of the universe. Usage of this velocity and the angular distance (in addition to the standard approach --- proper distance and corresponding velocity) allows to present the cosmic expansion in a more illustrative manner. These parameters play a key role in visualization of the expansion.

New features of flat (4+1)-dimensional cosmological model with a perfect fluid in Gauss-Bonnet gravity

We investigated a flat multidimensional cosmological model in Gauss-Bonnet gravity in presence of a matter in form of perfect fluid. We found analytically new stationary regimes (these results are valid for arbitrary number of spatial dimensions) and studied their stability by means of numerical recipes in 4+1-dimensional case. In the vicinity of the stationary regime we discovered numerically another non-singular regime which appears to be periodical. Finally, we demonstrated that the presence of matter in form of a perfect fluid lifts some constraints on the dynamics of the 4+1-dimensional model which have been found earlier.

The nature of singularity in multidimensional anisotropic Gauss-Bonnet cosmology with a perfect fluid

We investigate dynamics of (4+1) and (5+1) dimensional flat anisotropic Universe filled by a perfect fluid in the Gauss-Bonnet gravity. An analytical solutions valid for particular values of the equation of state parameter $w=1/3$ have been found. For other values of $w$ structure of cosmological singularity have been studied numerically. We found that for $w > 1/3$ the singularity is isotropic. Several important differences between (4+1) and (5+1) dimensional cases are discussed.

De Sitter stability in quadratic gravity

Quadratic curvature corrections to Einstein-Hilbert action lead in general to higher-order equations of motion, which can induced instability of some unperturbed solutions of General Relativity. We study conditions for stability of de Sitter cosmological solution. We argue that simple form of this condition known for FRW background in 3+1 dimensions changes seriously if at least one of these two assumptions is violated. In the present paper the stability conditions for de Sitter solution have been found for multidimensional FRW background and for Bianchi I metrics in 3+1 dimensions.

Complex inflaton field in quantum cosmology

We investigate the cosmological model with the complex scalar self-interacting inflaton field non-minimally coupled to gravity. The different geometries of the Euclidean classically forbidden regions are represented. The instanton solutions of the corresponding Euclidean equations of motion are found by numerical calculations supplemented by the qualitative analysis of Lorentzian and Euclidean trajectories. The applications of these solutions to the no-boundary and tunneling proposals for the wave function of the Universe are studied. Possible interpretation of obtained results and their connection with inflationary cosmology is discussed. The restrictions on the possible values of the new quasi-fundamental constant of the theory-non-zero classical charge-- are obtained. The equations of motion for the generalized cosmological model with complex scalar field are written down and investigated. The conditions of the existence of instanton solutions corresponding to permanent values of an absolute value of scalar field are obtained.

Simplest cosmological model with the scalar field

We investigate the simplest cosmological model with the massive real scalar non-interacting inflaton field minimally coupled to gravity. The classification of trajectories in closed minisuperspace Friedmann-Robertson-Walker model is presented. The fractal nature of a set of infinitely bounced trajectories is discussed. The results of numerical calculations are compared with those obtained byperturbative analytical calculations around the exactly solvable minisuperspace cosmological model with massless scalar field.
