Novel View Synthesis using DDIM Inversion

Synthesizing novel views from a single input image is a challenging task. It requires extrapolating the 3D structure of a scene while inferring details in occluded regions, and maintaining geometric consistency across viewpoints. Many existing methods must fine-tune large diffusion backbones using multiple views or train a diffusion model from scratch, which is extremely expensive. Additionally, they suffer from blurry reconstruction and poor generalization. This gap presents the opportunity to explore an explicit lightweight view translation framework that can directly utilize the high-fidelity generative capabilities of a pretrained diffusion model while reconstructing a scene from a novel view. Given the DDIM-inverted latent of a single input image, we employ a camera pose-conditioned translation U-Net, TUNet, to predict the inverted latent corresponding to the desired target view. However, the image sampled using the predicted latent may result in a blurry reconstruction. To this end, we propose a novel fusion strategy that exploits the inherent noise correlation structure observed in DDIM inversion. The proposed fusion strategy helps preserve the texture and fine-grained details. To synthesize the novel view, we use the fused latent as the initial condition for DDIM sampling, leveraging the generative prior of the pretrained diffusion model. Extensive experiments on MVImgNet demonstrate that our method outperforms existing methods.

Meta Generative Attack on Person Reidentification

Adversarial attacks have been recently investigated in person re-identification. These attacks perform well under cross dataset or cross model setting. However, the challenges present in cross-dataset cross-model scenario does not allow these models to achieve similar accuracy. To this end, we propose our method with the goal of achieving better transferability against different models and across datasets. We generate a mask to obtain better performance across models and use meta learning to boost the generalizability in the challenging cross-dataset cross-model setting. Experiments on Market-1501, DukeMTMC-reID and MSMT-17 demonstrate favorable results compared to other attacks.

Novel Deep Learning Framework for Wideband Spectrum Characterization at Sub-Nyquist Rate

Introduction of spectrum-sharing in 5G and subsequent generation networks demand base-station(s) with the capability to characterize the wideband spectrum spanned over licensed, shared and unlicensed non-contiguous frequency bands. Spectrum characterization involves the identification of vacant bands along with center frequency and parameters (energy, modulation, etc.) of occupied bands. Such characterization at Nyquist sampling is area and power-hungry due to the need for high-speed digitization. Though sub-Nyquist sampling (SNS) offers an excellent alternative when the spectrum is sparse, it suffers from poor performance at low signal to noise ratio (SNR) and demands careful design and integration of digital reconstruction, tunable channelizer and characterization algorithms. In this paper, we propose a novel deep-learning framework via a single unified pipeline to accomplish two tasks: 1)~Reconstruct the signal directly from sub-Nyquist samples, and 2)~Wideband spectrum characterization. The proposed approach eliminates the need for complex signal conditioning between reconstruction and characterization and does not need complex tunable channelizers. We extensively compare the performance of our framework for a wide range of modulation schemes, SNR and channel conditions. We show that the proposed framework outperforms existing SNS based approaches and characterization performance approaches to Nyquist sampling-based framework with an increase in SNR. Easy to design and integrate along with a single unified deep learning framework make the proposed architecture a good candidate for reconfigurable platforms.

OneStopTuner: An End to End Architecture for JVM Tuning of Spark Applications

Java is the backbone of widely used big data frameworks, such as Apache Spark, due to its productivity, portability from JVM-based execution, and support for a rich set of libraries. However, the performance of these applications can widely vary depending on the runtime flags chosen out of all existing JVM flags. Manually tuning these flags is both cumbersome and error-prone. Automated tuning approaches can ease the task, but current solutions either require considerable processing time or target a subset of flags to avoid time and space requirements. In this paper, we present OneStopTuner, a Machine Learning based novel framework for autotuning JVM flags. OneStopTuner controls the amount of data generation by leveraging batch mode active learning to characterize the user application. Based on the user-selected optimization metric, OneStopTuner then discards the irrelevant JVM flags by applying feature selection algorithms on the generated data. Finally, it employs sample efficient methods such as Bayesian optimization and regression guided Bayesian optimization on the shortlisted JVM flags to find the optimal values for the chosen set of flags. We evaluated OneStopTuner on widely used Spark benchmarks and compare its performance with the traditional simulated annealing based autotuning approach. We demonstrate that for optimizing execution time, the flags chosen by OneStopTuner provides a speedup of up to 1.35x over default Spark execution, as compared to 1.15x speedup by using the flag configurations proposed by simulated annealing. OneStopTuner was able to reduce the number of executions for data-generation by 70% and was able to suggest the optimal flag configuration 2.4x faster than the standard simulated annealing based approach, excluding the time for data-generation.

PicHunt: Social Media Image Retrieval for Improved Law Enforcement

First responders are increasingly using social media to identify and reduce crime for well-being and safety of the society. Images shared on social media hurting religious, political, communal and other sentiments of people, often instigate violence and create law & order situations in society. This results in the need for first responders to inspect the spread of such images and users propagating them on social media. In this paper, we present a comparison between different hand-crafted features and a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) model to retrieve similar images, which outperforms state-of-art hand-crafted features. We propose an Open-Source-Intelligent (OSINT) real-time image search system, robust to retrieve modified images that allows first responders to analyze the current spread of images, sentiments floating and details of users propagating such content. The system also aids officials to save time of manually analyzing the content by reducing the search space on an average by 67%.
