Possible quadrupole-order-driven commensurate-incommensurate phase transition in B20 CoGe

The B20-type cobalt germanide CoGe was investigated by measuring the specific heat, resistivity, and $^{59}$Co nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR). We observed a phase transition at $T_Q=13.7$ K, evidenced by a very narrow peak of the specific heat and sharp changes of the nuclear spin-spin ($T_2^{-1}$) and spin-lattice ($T_1^{-1}$) relaxation rates. The fact that the entropy release is extremely small and the Knight shift is almost independent of temperature down to low temperatures as anticipated in a paramagnetic metal indicates that the $T_Q$ transition is of non-magnetic origin. In addition, we detected a crossover scale $T_0\sim30$ K below which the resistivity and the NMR linewidth increase, and $T_1^{-1}$ is progressively distributed in space, that is, a static and dynamical spatial inhomogeneity develops. While the order parameter for the $T_Q$ transition remains an open question, a group-theoretical analysis suggests that the finite electric quadrupole density arising from the low local site symmetry at cobalt sites could drive the crystal symmetry lowering from the P2$_1$3 symmetry that is commensurate to the R3 symmetry with an incommensurate wavevector, which fairly well accounts for the $T_Q$ transition. The quadrupole-order-driven commensurate-incommensurate phase transition may be another remarkable phenomenon arising from the structural chirality inherent in the noncentrosymmetric B20 family.

Fano-type effect in hydrogen-terminated pure nanodiamond

Two novel properties, unique for semiconductors: a negative electron affinity [1-2], and a high p-type surface electrical conductivity [3-4], were discovered in diamond at the end of the last century. Both properties appear when the diamond surface is hydrogenated. A natural question arises: is the influence of the surface hydrogen on diamond limited only to the electrical properties? Here, we report the first observation of a transparency peak at 1328 cm-1 in IR absorption of hydrogen-terminated pure (undoped) nanodiamonds. This new optical property is ascribed to Fano-type destructive interference between zone-center phonons and free carriers (holes) appearing in the near-surface layer of hydrogenated nanodiamond. Our work opens the way to exploring the physics of electron-phonon coupling in undoped diamonds and promises the application of the H-terminated nanodiamonds as a new optical material with an induced transparency in IR optical range.

Towards an ab initio theory for the temperature dependence of electric-field gradient in solids: application to hexagonal lattices of Zn and Cd

Based on ab initio band structure calculations we formulate a general theoretical method for description of the temperature dependence of electric field gradient in solids. The method employs a procedure of averaging multipole electron density component (l \neq 0) inside a sphere vibrating with the nucleus at its center. As a result of averaging each Fourier component (K \neq 0) on the sphere is effectively reduced by the square root of the Debye-Waller factor [exp(-W)]. The electric field gradient related to a sum of K-components most frequently decreases with temperature (T), but under certain conditions because of the interplay between terms of opposite signs it can also increase with T. The method is applied to calculations of the temperature evolution of the electric field gradients of pristine zinc and cadmium crystallized in the hexagonal lattice. For calculations within our model of crucial importance is the temperature dependence of mean-square displacements which can be taken from experiment or obtained from the phonon modes in the harmonic approximation. For the case of Zn we have used data obtained from single crystal x-ray diffraction. In addition, for Zn and Cd we have calculated mean-square displacements with the density functional perturbation treatment of the Quantum Espresso package. With the experimental data for displacements in Zn our calculations reproduce the temperature dependence of the electric field gradient very accurately. Within the harmonic approximation of the Quantum Espresso package the decrease of electric field gradients in Zn and Cd with temperature is overestimated. Our calculations indicate that the anharmonic effects are of considerable importance in the temperature dependence of electric field gradients.

Magnetic hyperfine structure of the ground-state doublet in highly charged ions $^{229}$Th$^{89+,87+}$ and the Bohr-Weisskopf effect

The magnetic hyperfine (MHF) structure of the $5/2^+$(0.0 eV) ground state and the low-lying $3/2^+$(7.8 eV) isomeric state of the $^{229}$Th nucleus in highly charged ions Th$^{89+}$ and Th$^{87+}$ is calculated. The distribution of the nuclear magnetization (the Bohr-Weisskopf effect) is accounted for in the framework of the collective nuclear model with the wave functions of the Nilsson model for the unpaired neutron. The deviations of the MHF structure for the ground and isomeric states from their values in the model of point-like nuclear magnetic dipole are calculated. The influence of the mixing of the states with the same quantum number $F$ on the energy of sublevels is studied. Taking into account the mixing of states, the probabilities of the transitions between the components of MHF structure are found.

Phonon assisted resonant tunnelling and its phonons control

We observe a series of sharp resonant features in the tunnelling differential conductance of InAs quantum dots. We found that dissipative quantum tunnelling has a strong influence on the operation of nano-devices. Because of such tunnelling the current-voltage characteristics of tunnel contact created between atomic force microscope tip and a surface of InAs/GaAs quantum dots display many interesting peaks. We found that the number, position, and heights of these peaks are associated with the phonon modes involved. To describe the found effect we use a quasi-classical approximation. There the tunnelling current is related to a creation of a dilute instanton-anti-instanton gas. Our experimental data are well described with exactly solvable model where one charged particle is weakly interacting with two promoting phonon modes associated with external medium. We conclude that the characteristics of the tunnel nanoelectronic devices can thus be controlled by a proper choice of phonons existing in materials, which are involved.

Extension of the basis set of linearized augmented plane wave method (LAPW) by using supplemented tight binding basis functions

In order to increase the accuracy of the linearized augmented plane wave method (LAPW) we present a new approach where the plane wave basis function is augmented by two different atomic radial components constructed at two different linearization energies corresponding to two different electron bands (or energy windows). We demonstrate that this case can be reduced to the standard treatment within the LAPW paradigm where the usual basis set is enriched by the basis functions of the tight binding type, which go to zero with zero derivative at the sphere boundary. We show that the task is closely related with the problem of extended core states which is currently solved by applying the LAPW method with local orbitals (LAPW+LO). In comparison with LAPW+LO, the number of supplemented basis functions in our approach is doubled, which opens up a new channel for the extension of the LAPW and LAPW+LO basis sets. The appearance of new supplemented basis functions absent in the LAPW+LO treatment is closely related with the existence of the $\dot{u}_l-$component in the canonical LAPW method. We discuss properties of additional tight binding basis functions and apply the extended basis set for computation of electron energy bands of lanthanum (face and body centered structures) and hexagonal close packed lattice of cadmium. We demonstrate that the new treatment gives lower total energies in comparison with both canonical LAPW and LAPW+LO, with the energy difference more pronounced for intermediate and poor LAPW basis sets.

Hyperfine field assessment of the magnetic structure of ZrZn2

Time differential perturbed angular gamma-gamma-correlation (TDPAC) method on 111Cd nuclei probes inserted in ZrZn1.9 is used to measure the magnetic hyperfine fields (MHF) at Zr and Zn sites and the electric field gradient (EFG) Vzz at Zn sites as a function of temperature at various pressures and as a function of pressure at the temperature 4 K. Our data indicate that the local magnetic moment of Zr in the magnetically ordered state is substantially larger than its value obtained from the macroscopic measurements and that there is also an induced magnetic moment at the Zn site. We conclude that ZrZn2 is not a simple ferromagnet and discuss a possible type of its magnetic ordering.

Theory of elastic anomalies at the gamma--alpha phase transition in solid Ce

Starting from a model of 4f-electron generated quadrupolar densities on a compressible fcc lattice, the elastic anomalies at the Fm3m -> Pa3 phase transition are studied by means of analytical theory. The model is taken as representative for the gamma-alpha phase transition in Ce. The coupling of the (linear) lattice displacements to the square of the quadrupolar orientational density fluctuations renormalizes the elastic constants. The condensation of the quadrupolar densities into the orientationally ordered Pa3 structure is studied as function of temperature and pressure. Precursor effects of the transition lead to an anomalous softening of the elastic constant c11 while c44 exhibits no such softening. The theoretical results are in excellent qualitative agreement with pressure experiments on the elastic constants (equivalently on sound velocities) at the $gamma-alpha transition in Ce. Lattice dynamical analogies in theory and striking similarities in experimental results with the Fm3m -> Pa3 transition in C60 fullerite are discussed.

Low-lying energy spectrum of the cerium dimer

The electronic structure of Ce2 is studied in a valence bond model with two 4f electrons localized at two cerium sites. It is shown that the low-lying energy spectrum of the simplest cerium chemical bond is determined by peculiarities of the occupied 4f states. The model allows for an analytical solution which is discussed along with the numerical analysis. The energy spectrum is a result of the interplay between the 4f valence bond exchange, the 4f Coulomb repulsion and the spin-orbit coupling. The calculated ground state is the even Ω=Λ=Σ=0 level, the lowest excitations situated at 30 K are the odd Ω=Λ=Σ=0 state and the $^{3} 6_5$ doublet (Ω=\pm5,\, Λ=\pm6,\, Σ=\mp1). The calculated magnetic susceptibility displays different behavior at high and low temperatures. In the absence of the spin-orbit coupling the ground state is the ${}^3 Σ_g^-$ triplet. The results are compared with other many-electron calculations and experimental data.

Ferroelectricity of Neel-type magnetic domain walls

The chirality-dependent magnetoelectric properties of Neel-type domain walls in iron garnet films is observed. The electrically driven magnetic domain wall motion changes the direction to the opposite with the reversal of electric polarity of the probe and with the chirality switching of the domain wall from clockwise to counterclockwise. This proves that the origin of the electric field induced micromagnetic structure transformation is inhomogeneous magnetoelectric interaction.

The gamma->alpha phase transition in cerium is not isostructural

Using a small amount of radioactive 111Cd atoms implanted in cerium lattice to probe the hyperfine electric quadrupole interaction, we have detected a quadrupole electron charge density component in alpha-Ce, which is absent in gamma-Ce. The appearance of the quadrupole density in alpha-Ce predicted by the quadrupole scenario of the phase transition demonstrates that the spacial symmetry is lowered at the gamma->alpha phase transition. This finding makes cerium the first element where the symmetry change is driven exclusively by the valence electron degrees of freedom while the atomic centers of mass (cerium nuclei) occupy the face centered cubic positions. We also report on nuclear quadrupole interactions in other high pressure phases of cerium: alpha' (C2/m space symmetry) and alpha' (alpha-U structure).

Crystal Structures of Polymerized Fullerides AC60, A=K, Rb, Cs and Alkali-mediated Interactions

Starting from a model of rigid interacting C60 polymer chains on an orthorhombic lattice, we study the mutual orientation of the chains and the stability of the crystalline structures Pmnn and I2/m. We take into account i) van der Waals interactions and electric quadrupole interactions between C60 monomers on different chains as well as ii) interactions of the monomers with the surrounding alkali atoms. The direct interactions i) always lead to an antiferrorotational structure Pmnn with alternate orientation of the C60 chains in planes (001). The interactions ii) with the alkalis consist of two parts: translation-rotation (TR) coupling where the orientations of the chains interact with displacements of the alkalis, and quadrupolar electronic polarizability (ep) coupling, where the electric quadrupoles on the C60 monomers interact with induced quadrupoles due to excited electronic d states of the alkalis. Both interactions ii) lead to an effective orientation-orientation interaction between the C60 chains and always favor the ferrorotational structure I2/m where C60 chains have a same orientation. The structures Pmnn for KC60 and I2/m for Rb- and CsC60 are the result of a competition between the direct interaction i) and the alkali-mediated interactions ii). In Rb- and CsC60 the latter are found to be dominant, the preponderant role being played by the quadrupolar electronic polarizability of the alkali ions.

Hartree-Fock-LAPW method: using the full potential treatment for exchange

We formulate a Hartree-Fock-LAPW method for electronic band structure calculations. The method is based on the Hartree-Fock-Roothaan approach for solids with extended electron states and closed core shells where the basis functions of itinerant electrons are linear augmented plane waves. All interactions within the restricted Hartree-Fock approach are analyzed and in principle can be taken into account. In particular, we have obtained the matrix elements for the exchange interactions of extended states and the crystal electric field effects. In order to calculate the matrix elements of exchange for extended states we first introduce an auxiliary potential and then integrate it with an effective charge density corresponding to the electron exchange transition under consideration. The problem of finding the auxiliary potential is solved by using the strategy of the full potential LAPW approach, which is based on the general solution of periodic Poisson's equation. Here we use an original technique for the general solution of periodic Poisson's equation and multipole expansions of electron densities. We apply the technique to obtain periodic potentials of the face centered cubic lattice and discuss its accuracy and convergence in comparison with other methods.

Molecular terms, magnetic moments and optical transitions of molecular ions C60+/-

Starting from a multipole expansion of intra- molecular Coulomb interactions, we present configuration interaction calculations of the molecular energy terms of the hole configurations hu^m, m=2-5, of C60^{m+} cations, of the electron configurations t1u^n, n=2-4, of the C60^{n-} anions, and of the exciton configurations (hu^+ t1u^-), (hu^+ t1g^-) of the neutral C60 molecule. The ground state of C60^{2-} is either 3 T1g or 1Ag, depending on the energy separation between t1g and t1u levels. There are three close (~0.03 eV) low lying triplets 3T1g, 3Gg, 3T2g for C60^{2+}, and three quartets 4T1u, 4Gu, 4T2u for C60^{3+}, which can be subjected to the Jahn-Teller effect. The number of low lying nearly degenerate states in largest for m=3 holes. We have calculated the magnetic moments of the hole and electron configurations and found that they are independent of molecular orientation in respect to an external magnetic field. The coupling of spin and orbital momenta differs from the atomic case. We analyze the electronic dipolar transitions t1u^2 -> t1u t1g and t1u^3 -> t1u^2 t1g for C60^{2-} and C60^{3-}. Three optical absorption lines (3T1g -> 3Hu, 3T1u, 3Au) are found for the ground level of C60^{2-} and only one line (4Au -> 4T1g) for the ground state of C60^{3-}. We compare our results with the experimental data for C60^{n-} in solutions and with earlier theoretical studies.
