Probing Fundamental Physics With Multi-Modal Cosmic Ray Events

The Horizon-T experiment in Tien Shan is based on the idea of measuring the time at which EAS disc passes the observation level with nanosecond accuracy. The detector system consists of ten charged particles registration points located at distances of up to several hundred meters from each other. The points are equipped with detectors based on registration of Cherenkov radiation in glass and registration of scintillation light in polystyrene. The detectors register the arrival times of charged particles at the observation level with a resolution of ~2 ns, as required to study the spatial and temporal characteristics of the EAS and the structure of the multi-modal events specifically. Over the period of the Horizon-T data taking since 2017 to present, a large number of multi-modal events were detected. The data has presented numerous challenges that show the direction towards the further development of the detector system and of the analysis methods and techniques that could be applied to these multi-modal events.

Recent Experiments At Ndcx-II: Irradiation Of Materials Using Short, Intense Ion Beams

We present an overview of the performance of the Neutralized Drift Compression Experiment-II (NDCX-II) accelerator at Berkeley Lab, and summarize recent studies of material properties created with nanosecond and millimeter-scale ion beam pulses. The scientific topics being explored include the dynamics of ion induced damage in materials, materials synthesis far from equilibrium, warm dense matter and intense beam-plasma physics. We summarize the improved accelerator performance, diagnostics and results of beam-induced irradiation of thin samples of, e.g., tin and silicon. Bunches with over 3x10^10 ions, 1- mm radius, and 2-30 ns FWHM duration have been created. To achieve these short pulse durations and mm-scale focal spot radii, the 1.2 MeV He+ ion beam is neutralized in a drift compression section which removes the space charge defocusing effect during final compression and focusing. Quantitative comparison of detailed particle-in-cell simulations with the experiment play an important role in optimizing accelerator performance; these keep pace with the accelerator repetition rate of ~1/minute.

Temporal characterization of individual harmonics of an attosecond pulse train by THz streaking

We report on the global temporal pulse characteristics of individual harmonics in an attosecond pulse train by means of photo-electron streaking in a strong low-frequency transient. The scheme allows direct retrieval of pulse durations and first order chirp of individual harmonics without the need of temporal scanning. The measurements were performed using an intense THz field generated by tilted phase front technique in LiNbO_3 . Pulse properties for harmonics of order 23, 25 and 27 show that the individual pulse durations and linear chirp are decreasing by the harmonic order.

X-ray Flare Spectra from the DIOGENESS Spectrometer and its concept applied to ChemiX on the Interhelioprobe spacecraft

The {\em DIOGENESS} X-ray crystal spectrometer on the {\em CORONAS-F} spacecraft operated for a single month (25~August to 17~September) in 2001 but in its short lifetime obtained one hundred and forty high-resolution spectra from some eight solar flares with {\em GOES} importance ranging from C9 to X5. The instrument included four scanning flat crystals with wavelength ranges covering the regions of \sixiii\ (6.65~Å), \sxv\ (5.04~Å), and \caxix\ (3.18~Å) X-ray lines and associated dielectronic satellites. Two crystals covering the \caxix\ lines were oriented in a ``Dopplerometer'' manner, i.e. such that spatial and spectral displacements both of which commonly occur in flares can be separated. We describe the {\em DIOGENESS} spectrometer and the spectra obtained during flares which include lines not hitherto seen from spacecraft instruments. An instrument with very similar concept is presently being built for the two Russian {\em Interhelioprobe} spacecraft due for launch in 2020 and 2022 that will make a near-encounter (perihelion $\sim 0.3$ a.u.) to the Sun in its orbit. We outline the results that are likely to be obtained.

Specific features of electron spin resonance in quasi-1D magnet β-TeVO4

The angular and temperature dependences of single crystal ESR spectra at X-band frequency of quasi 1D spin 1/2 antiferromagnetic zigzag chain system β-TeVO4 are reported. Two resonance components in the ESR spectrum have been detected: a weak narrow resonance on the top of the extremely broad signal. The narrow line might be due to an impurity, the characteristics of the broad absorption do not correlate with a picture of the typical behavior for the V4+ ions (S = 1/2) with a square pyramidal environment. It was found that at low temperatures the divergence of the spin susceptibility and linewidth of the observed excitations can be due to a realization of three dimensional magnetic ordering.

Leakage radiation microscopy of surface plasmon polaritons

We review the principle and methodology of leakage radiation microscopy (LRM) applied to surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs). Therefore we first analyse in detail the electromagnetic theory of leaky SPP waves. We show that LRM is a versatile optical far-field method allowing direct quantitative imaging and analysis of SPP propagation on thin metal films. We illustrate the LRM potentiality by analyzing the propagation of SPP waves interacting with several two dimensional plasmonic devices realized and studied in the recent years.

Magnetic anisotropy of BaCu2Si2O7: theory and antiferromagnetic resonance

Antiferromagnetic resonance (AFMR) of BaCu2Si2O7 and a microscopic theory of the magnetic anisotropy of spin 1/2 chain compounds with folded CuO3 geometry being in good agreement with the available data are presented. The AFMR studies at 4.2 K show the existence of two gaps (40 and 76 GHz) at zero magnetic field and of two spin re-orientation transitions for H||c. The microscopic origin of the two gaps is shown to be Hund's rule coupling which leads to a "residual anisotropy" beyond the compensation of the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya term by the symmetric anisotropy which would be valid without Hund's coupling.
