An alternative scheme for effective range corrections in pionless EFT

We discuss an alternative scheme for including effective range corrections in pionless effective field theory. The standard approach treats range terms as perturbative insertions in the T -matrix. In a finite volume this scheme can lead to singular behavior close to the unperturbed energies. We consider an alternative scheme that resums the effective range but expands the spurious pole of the T -matrix created by this resummation. We test this alternative expansion for several model potentials and observe good convergence.

On the mass difference between proton and neutron

The Cottingham formula expresses the electromagnetic part of the mass of a particle in terms of the virtual Compton scattering amplitude. At large photon momenta, this amplitude is dominated by short distance singularities associated with operators of spin 0 and spin 2. In the difference between proton and neutron, chiral symmetry suppresses the spin 0 term. Although the angular integration removes the spin 2 singularities altogether, the various pieces occurring in the standard decomposition of the Cottingham formula do pick up such contributions. These approach asymptotics extremely slowly because the relevant Wilson coefficients only fall off logarithmically. We rewrite the formula in such a way that the leading spin 2 contributions are avoided ab initio. Using a sum rule that follows from Reggeon dominance, the numerical evaluation of the e.m. part of the mass difference between proton and neutron yields $m_{QED}^{p-n}=0.58\pm 0.16\,$MeV. The result indicates that the inelastic contributions are small compared to the elastic ones.

Cottingham formula and nucleon polarizabilities

The difference between the electromagnetic self-energies of proton and neutron can be calculated with the Cottingham formula, which expresses the self-energies as an integral over the electroproduction cross sections---provided the nucleon matrix elements of the current commutator do not contain a fixed pole. We show that, under the same proviso, the subtraction function occurring in the dispersive representation of the virtual Compton forward scattering amplitude is determined by the cross sections. The representation in particular leads to a parameter-free sum rule for the nucleon polarizabilities. We evaluate the sum rule for the difference between the electric polarizabilities of proton and neutron by means of the available parameterizations of the data and compare the result with experiment.

Finite volume corrections to forward Compton scattering off the nucleon

We calculate the spin-averaged amplitude for doubly virtual forward Compton scattering off nucleons in the framework of manifestly Lorentz invariant baryon chiral perturbation theory at complete one-loop order $O(p^4)$. The calculations are carried out both in the infinite and in a finite volume. The obtained results allow for a detailed estimation the finite-volume corrections to the amplitude which can be extracted on the lattice using the background field technique.

Bound states on the lattice with partially twisted boundary conditions

We propose a method to study the nature of exotic hadrons by determining the wave function renormalization constant $Z$ from lattice simulations. It is shown that, instead of studying the volume-dependence of the spectrum, one may investigate the dependence of the spectrum on the twisting angle, imposing twisted boundary conditions on the fermion fields on the lattice. In certain cases, e.g., the case of the $DK$ bound state which is addressed in detail, it is demonstrated that the partial twisting is equivalent to the full twisting up to exponentially small corrections.

Generating functional of ChPT at one loop for non-minimal operators

The divergent part of the one-loop effective action in Chiral Perturbation Theory with virtual photons has been evaluated in an arbitrary covariant gauge. The differential operator, that emerges in the functional determinant, is of a non-minimal type, for which the standard heat kernel methods are not directly applicable. Both SU(2) and SU(3) cases have been worked out. A comparison with existing results in the literature is given.

Matrix elements of unstable states

Using the language of non-relativistic effective Lagrangians, we formulate a systematic framework for the calculation of resonance matrix elements in lattice QCD. The generalization of the Lüscher-Lellouch formula for these matrix elements is derived. We further discuss in detail the procedure of the analytic continuation of the resonance matrix elements into the complex energy plane and investigate the infinite-volume limit.

Scalar mesons moving in a finite volume and the role of partial wave mixing

Phase shifts and resonance parameters can be obtained from finite-volume lattice spectra for interacting pairs of particles, moving with nonzero total momentum. We present a simple derivation of the method that is subsequently applied to obtain the pi pi and pi K phase shifts in the sectors with total isospin I=0 and I=1/2, respectively. Considering different total momenta, one obtains extra data points for a given volume that allow for a very efficient extraction of the resonance parameters in the infinite-volume limit. Corrections due to the mixing of partial waves are provided. We expect that our results will help to optimize the strategies in lattice simulations, which aim at an accurate determination of the scattering and resonance properties.

Scattering phases for meson and baryon resonances on general moving-frame lattices

A proposal by Lüscher enables one to compute the scattering phases of elastic two-body systems from the energy levels of the lattice Hamiltonian in a finite volume. In this work we generalize the formalism to S--, P-- and D--wave meson and baryon resonances, and general total momenta. Employing nonvanishing momenta has several advantages, among them making a wider range of energy levels accessible on a single lattice volume and shifting the level crossing to smaller values of $m_πL$.

Chiral unitary theory of scalar mesons in a finite volume

We develop a scheme for the extraction of the properties of the scalar mesons $f_0(600)$, $f_0(980)$, and $a_0(980)$ from lattice QCD data. This scheme is based on a two-channel chiral unitary approach with fully relativistic propagators in a finite volume. In order to discuss the feasibility of finding the mass and width of the scalar resonances, we analyze synthetic lattice data with a fixed error assigned, and show that the framework can be indeed used for an accurate determination of resonance pole positions in the multi-channel scattering.

Dynamical coupled-channel approaches on a momentum lattice

Dynamical coupled-channel approaches are a widely used tool in hadronic physics that allow to analyze different reactions and partial waves in a consistent way. In such approaches the basic interactions are derived within an effective Lagrangian framework and the resulting pseudo-potentials are then unitarized in a coupled-channel scattering equation. We propose a scheme that allows for a solution of the arising integral equation in discretized momentum space for periodic as well as twisted boundary conditions. This permits to study finite size effects as they appear in lattice QCD simulations. The new formalism, at this stage with a restriction to S-waves, is applied to coupled-channel models for the sigma(600), f0(980), and a0(980) mesons, and also for the Lambda(1405) baryon. Lattice spectra are predicted.

Unitarized Chiral Perturbation Theory in a finite volume: scalar meson sector

We develop a scheme for the extraction of the properties of the scalar mesons f0(600), f0(980), and a0(980) from lattice QCD data.

Chiral Perturbation Theory in a Nuclear Background

We propose a novel way to formulate Chiral Perturbation Theory in a nuclear background, characterized by a static, non-uniform distribution of the baryon number that describes the finite nucleus. In the limiting case of a uniform distribution, the theory reduces to the well-known zero-temperature in-medium ChPT. The proposed approach is used to calculate the self-energy of the charged pion in the background of the heavy nucleus at O(p^5) in the chiral expansion, and to derive the leading terms of the pion-nucleus optical potential.

Hadronic Atoms in QCD

We propose a non relativistic effective Lagrangian approach to study hadronic atom observables in the framework of QCD (including photons). We apply our formalism to derive a general expression for the width of the pi+pi- atom decaying into two neutral pions. It contains all terms at leading and next-to-leading order in isospin breaking. The result allows one to evaluate the combination a0-a2 of pi-pi S-wave scattering lengths from pi+pi- atom lifetime measurements, like the one presently performed by the DIRAC expeiment at CERN.

Report of Working Group on Electromagnetic Corrections

The talks delivered by M. Knecht, H. Neufeld, V.E. Lyubovitskij, A. Rusetsky and J. Soto during the session of the working group of electromagnetic corrections to hadronic processes at the Eight International Symposium MENU99, cover a wide range of problems. In particular, those include: construction of the effective Lagrangians that then are used for the evaluation of electromagnetic corrections to the decays of K mesons; evaluation of some of the low-energy constants in these Lagrangians, using sum rules and the large-N_c arguments; complete calculations of electromagnetic corrections to the pi pi scattering amplitude at O(e^2p^2); the general theory of electromagnetic bound states of hadrons in the Standard Model.

Spectrum and Decays of Hadronic Atoms

Using non relativistic effective Lagrangian techniques, we analyze the hadronic decay of the pi+pi- atom and the strong energy-level shift of pionic hydrogen in the ground state. We derive general formulae for the width and level shift, valid at next-to-leading order in isospin breaking. The result is expressed in terms of hadronic threshold amplitudes that include isospin-breaking effects. In order to extract isospin symmetric scattering lengths from the data, we invoke chiral perturbation theory, that allows one to relate the scattering lengths to the threshold amplitudes.
