Single- and multi-domain ferroelectricity driven by interfaces

The design of the interfacial bondings at metal-oxide interfaces yields exciting new phenomena and can be a route to sustain, and even promote, ferroelectricity at the nanoscale. We study the impact of these interfaces on the nature of the spontaneous polarization (single- vs. multi-domain) of ferroelectric capacitors. We show that interfacial properties intertwine with both ferrolectric and electrode parameters to determine the actual ground state of the system. We find analytically the criterion that specifies if ferroelectricity appears in a single- or multi- domain fashion as a result of this intertwining. The physics behind this criterion suggests new means for tailoring ferroelectric functionalities.

Effects of anisotropic elasticity in the problem of domain formation and stability of monodomain state in ferroelectric films

We study cubic ferroelectrics films that become uniaxial with a polar axis perpendicular to the film because of a misfit strain due to a substrate. The main present result is the analytical account for the elastic anisotropy as well as the anisotropy of the electrostriction. They define, in particular, an orientation of the domain boundaries and stabilizing or destabilizing effect of inhomogeneous elastic strains on the single domain state. We apply the general results to perovskite systems like BaTiO3/SrRuO3/SrTiO3 films and find that at least not far from the ferroelectric phase transition the equilibrium domain structure consists of the stripes along the cubic axes or at 45 degrees to them. We have also showed that in this system the inhomogeneous strains increase stability with regards to the small fluctuations of the metastable single domain state, which may exist not very close to the ferroelectric transition. The latter analytical result is in qualitative agreement with the numerical result by Pertsev and Kohlstedt [Phys. Rev. Lett. 98, 257603 (2007)], but we show that the effect is much smaller than those authors claim. We have found also that under certain conditions on the material constants, which are not satisfied in the perovskites but are not forbidden either, a checkerboard domain structure can be realized instead of the stripe-like one and that the polarization-strain coupling decreases stability of a single domain state instead of increasing it. The single domain state is metastable at certain large thicknesses and becomes suitable for memory applications at even larger thicknesses when the lifetime of the metastable state becomes sufficiently large.

Pseudo-proper ferroelectricity in thin films

We study ferroelectricity in thin films of pseudo-proper ferroelectrics such as the so-called spiral multiferroics. We find that this type of ferroelectricity stands better against depolarizing fields than conventional one. Its single-domain state can be easily preserved by metallic electrodes even in ultrathin films. In fact, single-domain ferroelectricty can be generated as a metastable state in the absence of electrodes. We also find a new regime of small thickness where unscreened films develop unusual multi-domain states with properties determined by non-electrostatic boundary conditions.

Depolarizing field and "real" hysteresis loops in nanometer-scale ferroelectric films

We give detailed analysis of the effect of depolarizing field in nanometer-size ferroelectric capacitors studied by Kim et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 95, 237602 (2005)]. We calculate a critical thickness of the homogeneous state and its stability with respect to domain formation for strained thin films of BaTiO3 on SrRuO3/SrTiO3 substrate within the Landau theory. While the former (2.5nm) is the same as given by ab-initio calculations, the actual critical thickness is set by the domains at 1.6nm. There is a large Merz's activation field for polarization relaxation. Remarkably, the results show a_negative_ slope of the "actual" hysteresis loops, a hallmark of the domain structures in ideal thin films with imperfect screening.

Elasticity-driven interaction between vortices in type-II superconductors

The contribution to the vortex lattice energy which is due to the vortex-induced strains is calculated covering all the magnetic field range which defines the vortex state. This contribution is compared with previously reported ones what shows that, in the most part of the vortex state, it has been notably underestimated until now. The reason of such underestimation is the assumption that only the vortex cores induce strains. In contrast to what is generally assumed, both core and non-core regions are important sources of strains in high-$κ$ superconductors.
