Influence of the Halide Ion on the A Site Dynamics in FAPbX3 (X = Br and Cl)

The optoelectronic properties and ultimately photovoltaic performance of hybrid lead halide perovskites, is inherently related to the dynamics of the organic cations. Here we report on the dynamics of the formamidinium (FA) cation in FAPbX3 perovskites for chloride and bromide varieties, as studied by neutron spectroscopy. Elastic fixed window scan measurements showed the onset of reorientational motion of FA cations in FAPbCl3 to occur at a considerably higher temperature compared to that in FAPbBr3. In addition, we observed two distinct dynamical transitions only in the chloride system, suggesting a significant variation in the reorientational motions of the FA cation with temperature. Quasielastic neutron scattering data analysis of FAPbCl3 showed that in the low temperature orthorhombic phase, FA cations undergo 2-fold jump reorientations about the C-H axis which evolve into an isotropic rotation in the intermediate tetragonal and high temperature cubic phases. Comparing the results with those from FAPbBr3, reveal that the time scale, barrier to reorientation and the geometry of reorientational motion of the FA cation are significantly different for the two halides. We note that this dependence of the dynamic properties of the A-site cation on the halide, is unique to the FA series; the geometry of methylammonium (MA) cation dynamics in MAPbX3 is known to be insensitive to different halides.

Detection of Faults in Power System Using Wavelet Transform and Independent Component Analysis

Uninterruptible power supply is the main motive of power utility companies that motivate them for identifying and locating the different types of faults as quickly as possible to protect the power system prevent complete power black outs using intelligent techniques. Thus, the present research work presents a novel method for detection of fault disturbances based on Wavelet Transform (WT) and Independent Component Analysis (ICA). The voltage signal is taken offline under fault conditions and is being processed through wavelet and ICA for detection. The time-frequency resolution from WT transform detects the fault initiation instant in the signal. Again, a performance index is calculated from independent component analysis under fault condition which is used to detect the fault disturbance in the voltage signal. The proposed approach is tested to be robust enough under various operating scenarios like without noise, with 20-dB noise and variation in frequency. Further, the detection study is carried out using a performance index, energy content, by applying the existing Fourier transform (FT), short time Fourier transform (STFT) and the proposed wavelet transform. Fault disturbances are detected if the energy calculated in each scenario is greater than the corresponding threshold value. The fault detection study is simulated in MATLAB/Simulink for a typical power system.

Test of Lorentz invariance in $β$ decay of polarized $^{20}\text{Na}$

We search for a dependence of the lifetime of $^{20}\text{Na}$ nuclei on the nuclear spin direction. Such a directional dependence would be evidence for Lorentz-invariance violation in weak interactions. A difference in lifetime between nuclei that are polarized in the east and west direction is searched for. This difference is maximally sensitive to the rotation of the Earth, while the sidereal dependence is free from most systematic errors. The experiment sets a limit of $2\times 10^{-4}$ at 90 % C.L. on the amplitude of the sidereal variation of the relative lifetime differences, an improvement by a factor 15 compared to an earlier result.

Determination of transition frequencies in a single $^{138}$Ba$^{+}$ ion

Transition frequencies between low-lying energy levels in a single trapped $^{138}$Ba$^{+}$ ion have been measured with laser spectroscopy referenced to an optical frequency comb. By extracting the frequencies of one-photon and two-photon components of the line shape using an eight-level optical Bloch model, we achieved 0.1 MHz accuracy for the 5d $^{2}$D$_{3/2}$ - 6p $^{2}$P$_{1/2}$ and 6s $^{2}$S$_{1/2}$ - 5d $^{2}$D$_{3/2}$ transition frequencies, and 0.2 MHz for the 6s $^{2}$S$_{1/2}$ - 6p $^{2}$P$_{1/2}$ transition frequency.

Baseline measures for net-proton distributions in high energy heavy-ion collisions

We report a systematic comparison of the recently measured cumulants of the net-proton distributions for 0-5\% central Au+Au collisions in the first phase of the Beam Energy Scan (BES) Program at the Relativistic Heavy Collider facility to various kinds of possible baseline measures. These baseline measures correspond to assuming that the proton and anti-proton distributions, follow Poisson statistics, Binomial statistics, obtained from a transport model calculation and from a hadron resonance gas model. The higher order cumulant net-proton data corresponding to the center of mass energies ($\sqrt{s_{NN}}$) of 19.6 and 27 GeV are observed to deviate from all the baseline measures studied. The deviations are predominantly due to the difference in shape of the proton distributions between data and those obtained in the baseline measures. We also present a detailed study on the relevance of the independent production approach as a baseline for comparison with the measurements at various beam energies. Our studies points to the need for a proper comparison of the experimental measurements to QCD calculations in order to extract the exact physics process that leads to deviation of the data from the baselines presented.
