Upsilon decay widths in magnetized asymmetric nuclear matter

The in-medium partial decay widths of $Υ(4S) \rightarrow B\bar B$ in magnetized asymmetric nuclear matter are studied using a field theoretic model for composite hadrons with quark (and antiquark) constituents. The medium modifications of the decay widths of $Υ(4S)$ to $B\bar B$ pair in magnetized matter arise due to the mass modifications of the decaying $Υ(4S)$ as well as of the produced $B$ and $\bar B$ mesons. The in-medium masses of the open bottom meson in magnetized nuclear matter are computed from their interactions with the nucleons and the scalar mesons within a chiral effective model. The mass modification of the $Υ(4S)$ arises due to the medium modification of a scalar dilaton field, which is introduced in the model to simulate the gluon condensates of QCD. The charged $B^{\pm}$ mesons have additional contributions from the Landau energy levels, leading to positive shifts in their masses in the presence of a magnetic field. In the presence of an external magnetic field, there are contributions to the masses of the $B$, $\bar B$ mesons and $Υ(4S)$ state (longitudinal component) due to the pseudoscalar meson-vector meson (PV) mixing ($B-B^*$, $\bar B- \bar {B^*}$ and $Υ(4S)-η_b(4S)$ mixings), which are also considered in the present study. The PV mixing effects are observed to be the dominant contributions to the mass shifts of these mesons, which lead to appreciable modifications in the decay widths of $Υ(4S)$ to the neutral ($B^0 \bar {B^0}$) and the charged ($B^+ B^-$) pairs in the presence of a magnetic field. These should have observable consequence in the production of open bottom mesons and bottomonium states at LHC and RHIC, where huge magnetic fields are produced in ultra-relativistic peripheral heavy ion collisions.

In-medium decay widths of hidden and open charm vector mesons in a field theoretic model for composite hadrons

We calculate the decay widths of the charmonium states, $J/ψ$, $ψ(3686)$ and $ψ(3770)$, to $D\bar D$ pairs, as well as the decay width of $D^* \rightarrow Dπ$, in isospin asymmetric strange hadronic matter, using a field theoretical model for composite hadrons with quark constituents. For this purpose we use the quark antiquark pair creation term of the free Dirac Hamiltonian written in terms of the constituent quark field operators, and use explicit charmonium, $D$, $\bar {D}$, $D^*$ and $π$ states to evaluate the matrix elements for the charmonium as well as $D^*$ decay amplitudes. The medium modifications of the partial decay widths of charmonium to $D\bar D$ pair, arising from the mass modifications of the $D(\bar D)$ and the charmonium states calculated in a chiral effective model, are also included. The effects of the isospin asymmetry, the strangeness fraction of the hadronic matter on the masses of the charmonium states and $D(\bar D)$ mesons and hence on the decay widths, have also been studied. The decay width of $D^* \rightarrow D π$ in the hadronic matter has also been calculated within the composite quark model in the present work, accounting for the medium modifications of the $D$ and $D^*$ masses. The density modifications of the charmonium states and $D(D^*)$ mesons, which are observed to be appreciable at high densities, will be of relevance in the compressed baryonic matter (CBM) experiments at the future facility of FAIR, GSI, where charmed hadrons will be produced by annihilation of antiprotons on nuclei. The interactions of the charmonium states and $D(D^*)$ with the nuclear medium could lead to the possiblility of the formation of exotic bound states of the nuclei with the (excited) charmonium states as well as with $D(D^*)$ mesons.

Vacuum Structure in QCD with Quark and Gluon Condensates

We consider here the vacuum structure in QCD with both quark and gluon condensates and a variational ansatz for the ground state. The method is nonperturbative using only equal time algebra for the field operators. We then find that a constrained energy minimisation of the Hamiltonian leads to a QCD vacuum with both quark and gluon condensates for $α_s > α_c=0.62$. Pion decay constant and the charge radius of the pion seem to fix the QCD coupling constant $α_s$ as 1.28. The approach opens up possibilities of relating the mysterious vacuum structure with common place hadronic properties.

Gluon Condensates at Finite Baryon Densities and Temperature

We derive here the equation of state for quark matter with a nontrivial vacuum structure in QCD at finite temperature and baryon density. Using thermofield dynamics, the parameters of thermal vacuum and the gluon condensate function are determined through minimisation of the thermodynamic potential, along with a self-consistent determination of the effective gluon and quark masses. The scale parameter for the gluon condensates is related to the SVZ parameter in the context of QCD sum rules at zero temperature. With inclusion of quarks in the thermal vacuum the critical temperature at which the gluon condensate vanishes decreases as compared to that containing only gluons. At zero temperature, we similarly obtain the critical baryon density for the same to be about 0.36 fm$^{-3}$.

Neutron matter - Quark matter phase transition and Quark star

We consider the neutron matter quark matter phase transition along with possible existence of hybrid quark stars. The equation of state for neutron matter is obtained using a nonperturbative method with pion dressing of the neutron matter and an analysis similar to that of symmetric nuclear matter. The quark matter sector is treated perturbatively in the small distance domain. For bag constant $B^{1/4}$=148 MeV, a first order phase transition is seen. In the context of neutron quark hybrid stars, Tolman-Oppenheimer-Volkoff equations are solved using the equations of state for quark matter and for neutron matter with a phase transition as noted earlier. Stable solutions for such stars are obtained with the Chandrasekhar limit as 1.58 $M_\odot$ and radius around 10 km. The bulk of the star is quark matter with a thin crust of neutron matter of less than a kilometer.

Effective Potentials in QCD and Chiral Symmetry Breaking

We consider chiral symmetry breaking through nontrivial vacuum structure with an explicit construct for the vacuum with quark antiquark condensates in QCD with Coulomb gauge for different phenomenological potentials. The dimensional parameter for the condensate function gets related to $<{\bar ψ}ψ>$ of Shifman, Vainshtein and Zakharov. We then relate the condensate function to the wave function of pion as a Goldstone mode. This simultaneously yields the pion also as a quark antiquark bound state as a localised zero mode of vacuum. We then calculate different pionic properties using the wave function as obtained from the vacuum structure. (to appear in Z. Phys. C)

Hot Nuclear Matter : A Variational Approach

We develop a nonperturbative technique in field theory to study properties of infinite nuclear matter at zero temperature as well as at finite temperatures. Here we dress the nuclear matter with off-mass shell pions. The techniques of thermofield dynamics are used for finite temperature calculations. Equation of state is derived from the dynamics of the interacting system in a self consistent manner. The transition temperature for nuclear matter appears to be around 15 MeV.
