Twisted Cherednik spectrum as a $q,t$-deformation

The common eigenfunctions of the twisted Cherednik operators can be first analyzed in the limit of $q\longrightarrow 1$. Then, the polynomial eigenfunctions form a simple set originating from the symmetric ground state of non-vanishing degree and excitations over it, described by non-symmetric polynomials of higher degrees and enumerated by weak compositions. This pattern is inherited by the full spectrum at $q\neq 1$, which can be considered as a deformation. The whole story looks like a typical NP problem: the Cherednik equations are difficult to solve, but easy to check the solution once it is somehow found.

Twisted Cherednik systems and non-symmetric Macdonald polynomials

We consider eigenfunctions of many-body system Hamiltonians associated with generalized (a-twisted) Cherednik operators used in construction of other Hamiltonians: those arising from commutative subalgebras of the Ding-Iohara-Miki (DIM) algebra. The simplest example of these eigenfunctions is provided by non-symmetric Macdonald polynomials, while generally they are constructed basing on the ground state eigenfunction coinciding with the twisted Baker-Akhiezer function being a peculiar (symmetric) eigenfunction of the DIM Hamiltonians. Moreover, the eigenfunctions admit an expansion with universal coefficients so that the dependence on the twist $a$ is hidden only in these ground state eigenfunctions, and we suggest a general formula that allows one to construct these eigenfunctions from non-symmetric Macdonald polynomials. This gives a new twist in theory of integrable systems, which usually puts an accent on symmetric polynomials, and provides a new dimension to the {\it triad} made from the symmetric Macdonald polynomials, untwisted Baker-Akhiezer functions and Noumi-Shiraishi series.

$W_{1+\infty}$ and $\widetilde W$ algebras, and Ward identities

It was demonstrated recently that the $W_{1+\infty}$ algebra contains commutative subalgebras associated with all integer slope rays (including the vertical one). In this paper, we realize that every element of such a ray is associated with a generalized $\widetilde W$ algebra. In particular, the simplest commutative subalgebra associated with the rational Calogero Hamiltonians is associated with the $\widetilde W$ algebras studied earlier. We suggest a definition of the generalized $\widetilde W$ algebra as differential operators in variables $p_k$ basing on the matrix realization of the $W_{1+\infty}$ algebra, and also suggest an unambiguous recursive definition, which, however, involves more elements of the $W_{1+\infty}$ algebra than is contained in its commutative subalgebras. The positive integer rays are associated with $\widetilde W$ algebras that form sets of Ward identities for the WLZZ matrix models, while the vertical ray associated with the trigonometric Calogero-Sutherland model describes the hypergeometric $τ$-functions corresponding to the completed cycles.

Connection between cut-and-join and Casimir operators

We study cut-and-join operators for spin Hurwitz partition functions. We provide explicit expressions for these operators in terms of derivatives in $p$-variables without straightforward matrix realization, which is yet to be found. With the help of these expressions spin cut-and-join operators can be calculated directly and algorithmically. The reason why it is possible is the connection between mentioned operators and specially chosen Casimir operators that are easy to compute. An essential part of the connection involves shifted Q-Schur functions.

Spin Hurwitz theory and Miwa transform for the Schur Q-functions

Schur functions are the common eigenfunctions of generalized cut-and-join operators which form a closed algebra. They can be expressed as differential operators in time-variables and also through the eigenvalues of auxiliary $N\times N$ matrices $X$, known as Miwa variables. Relevant for the cubic Kontsevich model and also for spin Hurwitz theory is an alternative set of Schur Q-functions. They appear in representation theory of the Sergeev group, which is a substitute of the symmetric group, related to the queer Lie superalgebras $\mathfrak{q}(N)$.. The corresponding spin $\hat{\cal W}$-operators were recently found in terms of time-derivatives, but a substitute of the Miwa parametrization remained unknown, which is an essential complication for the matrix model technique and further developments. We demonstrate that the Miwa representation, in this case, involves a fermionic matrix $Ψ$ in addition to $X$, but its realization using supermatrices is {\it not} quite naive.

Towards matrix model representation of HOMFLY polynomials

We investigate possibilities of generalizing the TBEM eigenvalue matrix model, which represents the non-normalized colored HOMFLY polynomials for torus knots as averages of the corresponding characters. We look for a model of the same type, which is a usual Chern-Simons mixture of the Gaussian potential, typical for Hermitean models, and the sine Vandermonde factors, typical for the unitary ones. We mostly concentrate on the family of twist knots, which contains a single torus knot, the trefoil. It turns out that for the trefoil the TBEM measure is provided by an action of Laplace exponential on the Jones polynomial. This procedure can be applied to arbitrary knots and provides a TBEM-like integral representation for the N=2 case. However, beyond the torus family, both the measure and its lifting to larger N contain non-trivial corrections in \hbar=\log q. A possibility could be to absorb these corrections into a deformation of the Laplace evolution by higher Casimir and/or cut-and-join operators, in the spirit of Hurwitz tau-function approach to knot theory, but this remains a subject for future investigation.

Cut-and-join structure and integrability for spin Hurwitz numbers

Spin Hurwitz numbers are related to characters of the Sergeev group, which are the expansion coefficients of the Q Schur functions, depending on odd times and on a subset of all Young diagrams. These characters involve two dual subsets: the odd partitions (OP) and the strict partitions (SP). The Q Schur functions Q_R with R\in SP are common eigenfunctions of cut-and-join operators W_Δwith Δ\in OP. The eigenvalues of these operators are the generalized Sergeev characters, their algebra is isomorphic to the algebra of Q Schur functions. Similarly to the case of the ordinary Hurwitz numbers, the generating function of spin Hurwitz numbers is a τ-function of an integrable hierarchy, that is, of the BKP type. At last, we discuss relations of the Sergeev characters with matrix models.

From superintegrability to tridiagonal representation of $β$-ensembles

The wonderful formulas by I.Dumitriu and A.Edelman rewrite $β$-ensemble, with eigenvalue integrals containing Vandermonde factors in the power $2β$, through integrals over tridiagonal matrices, where $β$-dependent are the powers of individual matrix elements, not their differences. These potentially useful formulas are usually deduced from rather complicated and non-transparent combinatorics and are not as widely known as they deserve. We explain that the superintegrability property, i.e. a simple expression of the Gaussian averages of arbitrary Jack polynomials through the same Jack polynomials, is immediately consistent with this tridiagonal representation, which may serve as a clue to its simple and transparent interpretation. For a formal non-perturbative proof, we use the Virasoro constraints, which themselves acquire an interesting structure in the tridiagonal realization. We also attract attention to the surprising spontaneous breakdown of discrete invariance by the tridiagonal measure, which may signal a new interesting anomaly at the elementary level of the basic eigenvalue matrix model.

Matrix model partition function by a single constraint

In the recent study of Virasoro action on characters, we discovered that it gets especially simple for peculiar linear combinations of the Virasoro operators: particular harmonics of $\hat w$-operators. In this letter, we demonstrate that even more is true: a {\it single} $w$-constraint is sufficient to uniquely specify the partition functions provided one assumes that it is a power series in time-variables. This substitutes the previous specifications in terms of {\it two} requirements: either a string equation imposed on the KP/Toda $τ$-function or a pair of Virasoro generators. This mysterious {\it single}-entry definition holds for a variety of theories, including Hermitian and complex matrix models, and also matrix models with external matrix: the unitary and cubic Kontsevich models. In these cases, it is equivalent to W-representation and is closely related to {\it super}\,integrability. However, a similar single equation that completely determines the partition function exists also in the case of the generalized Kontsevich model (GKM) with the potential of higher degree, when the constraint algebra is a larger $W$-algebra, and neither W-representation nor superintegrability are understood well enough.

Algebra of quantum ${\cal C}$-polynomials

Knot polynomials colored with symmetric representations of $SL_q(N)$ satisfy difference equations as functions of representation parameter, which look like quantization of classical ${\cal A}$-polynomials. However, they are quite difficult to derive and investigate. Much simpler should be the equations for coefficients of differential expansion nicknamed quantum ${\cal C}$-polynomials. It turns out that, for each knot, one can actually derive two difference equations of a finite order for these coefficients, those with shifts in spin $n$ of the representation and in $A=q^N$. Thus, the ${\cal C}$-polynomials are much richer and form an entire ring. We demonstrate this with the examples of various defect zero knots, mostly discussing the entire twist family.

Difference of mutant knot invariants and their differential expansion

We evaluate the differences of HOMFLY-PT invariants for pairs of mutant knots colored with representations of $SL(N)$, which are large enough to distinguish between them. These mutant pairs include the pretzel mutants, which require at least the representation, labeled by the Young diagram $[4,2]$. We discuss the differential expansion for the differences, it is non-trivial in the case of mutants, which have the non-zero defect. The most effective technical tool, in this case, turns out to be the standard Reshetikhin-Turaev approach.

Elliptic lift of the Shiraishi function as a non-stationary double-elliptic function

As a development of arXiv:1912.12897, we note that the ordinary Shiraishi functions have an insufficient number of parameters to describe generic eigenfunctions of double elliptic system (Dell). The lacking parameter can be provided by substituting elliptic instead of the ordinary Gamma functions in the coefficients of the series. These new functions (ELS-functions) are conjectured to be functions governed by compactified DIM networks which can simultaneously play the three roles: solutions to non-stationary Dell equations, Dell conformal blocks with the degenerate field (surface operator) insertion, and the corresponding instanton sums in $6d$ SUSY gauge theories with adjoint matter. We describe the basics of the corresponding construction and make further conjectures about the various limits and dualities which need to be checked to make a precise statement about the Dell description by double-periodic network models with DIM symmetry. We also demonstrate that the ELS-functions provide symmetric polynomials, which are an elliptic generalization of Macdonald ones, and compute the generation function of the elliptic genera of the affine Laumon spaces. In the particular $U(1)$ case, we find an explicit plethystic formula for the $6d$ partition function, which is a non-trivial elliptic generalization of the $(q,t)$ Nekrasov-Okounkov formula from $5d$.

On complete solution of the quantum Dell system

The mother functions for the eigenfunctions of the Koroteev-Shakirov version of quantum double-elliptic (Dell) Hamiltonians can be presented as infinite series in Miwa variables, very similar to the recent conjecture due to J. Shiraishi. Further studies should clear numerous remaining obstacles and thus solve the long-standing problem of explicitly constructing a Dell system, the top member of the Calogero-Moser-Ruijsenaars system, with the $PQ$-duality fully explicit at the elliptic level.

Complete solution to Gaussian tensor model and its integrable properties

Similarly to the complex matrix model, the rainbow tensor models are superintegrable in the sense that arbitrary Gaussian correlators are explicitly expressed through the Clebsh-Gordan coefficients. We introduce associated (Ooguri-Vafa type) partition functions and describe their $W$-representations. We also discuss their integrability properties, which can be further improved by better adjusting the way the partition function is defined. This is a new avatar of the old unresolved problem with non-Abelian integrability concerning a clever choice of the partition function. This is a part of the long-standing problem to define a non-Abelian lift of integrability from the fundamental to generic representation families of arbitrary Lie algebras.

Correspondence between Feynman diagrams and operators in quantum field theory that emerges from tensor model

A novel functorial relationship in perturbative quantum field theory is pointed out that associates Feynman diagrams (FD) having no external line in one theory ${\bf Th}_1$ with singlet operators in another one ${\bf Th}_2$ having an additional $U({\cal N})$ symmetry and is illustrated by the case where ${\bf Th}_1$ and ${\bf Th}_2$ are respectively the rank $r-1$ and the rank $r$ complex tensor model. The values of FD in ${\bf Th}_1$ agree with the large ${\cal N}$ limit of the Gaussian average of those operators in ${\bf Th}_2$. The recursive shift in rank by this FD functor converts numbers into vectors, then into matrices, and then into rank $3$ tensors ${\ldots}$ This FD functor can straightforwardly act on the $d$ dimensional tensorial quantum field theory counterparts as well. In the case of rank 2-rank 3 correspondence, it can be combined with the geometrical pictures of the dual of the original FD, namely, equilateral triangulations (Grothendieck's dessins d'enfant) to form a triality which may be regarded as a bulk-boundary correspondence.

Hook variables: cut-and-join operators and $τ$-functions

Young diagrams can be parameterized with the help of hook variables, which is well known but never studied in big detail. We demonstrate that this is the most adequate parameterization for many physical applications: from the Schur functions, conventional, skew and shifted, which all satisfy their own kinds of determinant formulas in these coordinates, to KP/Toda integrability and related basis of cut-and-join $\hat W$-operators, which are both actually expressed through the single-hook diagrams. In particular, we discuss a new type of multi-component KP $τ$-functions, Matisse $τ$-functions. We also demonstrate that the Casimir operators, which are responsible for integrability, are single-hook, with the popular basis of "completed cycles" being distinguished by especially simple coefficients in the corresponding expansion. The Casimir operators also generate the $q=t$ Ruijsenaars Hamiltonians. However, these properties are broken by the naive Macdonald deformation, which is the reason for the loss of KP/Toda integrability and related structures in $q$-$t$ matrix models.

On generalized Macdonald polynomials

Generalized Macdonald polynomials (GMP) are eigenfunctions of specifically-deformed Ruijsenaars Hamiltonians and are built as triangular polylinear combinations of Macdonald polynomials. They are orthogonal with respect to a modified scalar product, which could be constructed with the help of an increasingly important triangular perturbation theory, showing up in a variety of applications. A peculiar feature of GMP is that denominators in this expansion are fully factorized, which is a consequence of a hidden symmetry resulting from the special choice of the Hamiltonian deformation. We introduce also a simplified but deformed version of GMP, which we call generalized Schur functions. Our basic examples are bilinear in Macdonald polynomials.

On Hamiltonians for Kerov functions

Kerov Hamiltonians are defined as a set of commuting operators which have Kerov functions as common eigenfunctions. In the particular case of Macdonald polynomials, well known are the exponential Ruijsenaars Hamiltonians, but the exponential shape is not preserved in lifting to the Kerov level. Straightforwardly lifted is a bilinear expansion in Schur polynomials, the expansion coefficients being factorized and restricted to single-hook diagrams. However, beyond the Macdonald locus, the coefficients do not celebrate these properties, even for the simplest Hamiltonian in the set. The coefficients are easily expressed in terms of the eigenvalues, and, if so defined, the set of commuting Hamiltonians is enormously large: one can build one for each arbitrary set of eigenvalues $\{E_R\}$, specified independently for each Young diagrams $R$. A problem with these Hamiltonians is that they are constructed with the help of Kostka matrix instead of defining it, and thus are less powerful than the Ruijsenaars ones.

From Topological to Quantum Entanglement

Entanglement is a special feature of the quantum world that reflects the existence of subtle, often non-local, correlations between local degrees of freedom. In topological theories such non-local correlations can be given a very intuitive interpretation: quantum entanglement of subsystems means that there are "strings" connecting them. More generally, an entangled state, or similarly, the density matrix of a mixed state, can be represented by cobordisms of topological spaces. Using a formal mathematical definition of TQFT we construct basic examples of entangled states and compute their von Neumann entropy.

Kerov functions revisited

The Schur functions play a crucial role in the modern description of HOMFLY polynomials for knots and of topological vertices in DIM-based network theories, which could merge into a unified theory still to be developed. The Macdonald functions do the same for hyperpolynomials and refined vertices, but merging appears to be more problematic. For a detailed study of this problem, more knowledge is needed about the Macdonald polynomials than is usually available. As a preparation for the discussion of the knot/vertices relation, we summarize the relevant facts and open problems about the Macdonald and, more generally, Kerov functions. Like Macdonald polynomials, they are triangular combinations of Schur functions, but orthogonal in a more general scalar product. We explain that the parameters of the measure can be considered as a set of new time variables, and the Kerov functions are actually expressed through the Schur functions of these variables as well. Despite they provide an infinite-parametric extension of the Schur and Macdonald polynomials, the Kerov functions, and even the skew Kerov functions continue to satisfy the most important relations, like Cauchy summation formula, the transposition identity for reflection of the Young diagram and expression of the skew functions through the generalized Littlewood-Richardson structure constants. Since {\it these} are the properties important in most applications, one can expect that the Kerov extension exists for most of them, from the superintegrable matrix and tensor models to knot theory.

Ding-Iohara-Miki symmetry of network matrix models

Ward identities in the most general "network matrix model" can be described in terms of the Ding-Iohara-Miki algebras (DIM). This confirms an expectation that such algebras and their various limits/reductions are the relevant substitutes/deformations of the Virasoro/W-algebra for (q, t) and (q_1, q_2, q_3) deformed network matrix models. Exhaustive for these purposes should be the Pagoda triple-affine elliptic DIM, which corresponds to networks associated with 6d gauge theories with adjoint matter (double elliptic systems). We provide some details on elliptic qq-characters.

HOMFLY polynomials in representation [3,1] for 3-strand braids

This paper is a new step in the project of systematic description of colored knot polynomials started in arXiv:1506.00339. In this paper, we managed to explicitly find the inclusive Racah matrix, i.e. the whole set of mixing matrices in channels R^3->Q with all possible Q, for R=[3,1]. The calculation is made possible by the use of a newly-developed efficient highest-weight method, still it remains tedious. The result allows one to evaluate and investigate [3,1]-colored polynomials for arbitrary 3-strand knots, and this confirms many previous conjectures on various factorizations, universality, and differential expansions. We consider in some detail the next-to-twist-knots three-strand family (n,-1|1,-1) and deduce its colored HOMFLY. Also confirmed and clarified is the eigenvalue hypothesis for the Racah matrices, which promises to provide a shortcut to generic formulas for arbitrary representations.

New non-linear equations and modular form expansion for double-elliptic Seiberg-Witten prepotential

Integrable N-particle systems have an important property that the associated Seiberg-Witten prepotentials satisfy the WDVV equations. However, this does not apply to the most interesting class of elliptic and double-elliptic systems. Studying the commutativity conjecture for theta-functions on the families of associated spectral curves, we derive some other non-linear equations for the perturbative Seiberg-Witten prepotential, which turn out to have exactly the double-elliptic system as their generic solution. In contrast with the WDVV equations, the new equations acquire non-perturbative corrections which are straightforwardly deducible from the commutativity conditions. We obtain such corrections in the first non-trivial case of N=3 and describe the structure of non-perturbative solutions as expansions in powers of the flat moduli with coefficients that are (quasi)modular forms of the elliptic parameter.

On skew tau-functions in higher spin theory

Recent studies of higher spin theory in three dimensions concentrate on Wilson loops in Chern-Simons theory, which in the classical limit reduce to peculiar corner matrix elements between the highest and lowest weight states in a given representation of SL(N). Despite these "skew" tau-functions can seem very different from conventional ones, which are the matrix elements between the two highest weight states, they also satisfy the Toda recursion between different fundamental representations. Moreover, in the most popular examples they possess simple representations in terms of matrix models and Schur functions. We provide a brief introduction to this new interesting field, which, after quantization, can serve as an additional bridge between knot and integrability theories.

Quantum Racah matrices and 3-strand braids in irreps R with |R|=4

We describe the inclusive Racah matrices for the first non-(anti)symmetric rectangular representation R=[2,2] for quantum groups U_q(sl_N). Most of them have sizes 2, 3, and 4 and are fully described by the eigenvalue hypothesis. Of two 6x6 matrices, one is also described in this way, but the other one corresponds to the case of degenerate eigenvalues and is evaluated by the highest weight method. Together with the much harder calculation for R=[3,1] in arXiv:1605.02313 and with the new method to extract exclusive matrices S and \bar S from the inclusive ones, this completes the story of Racah matrices for |R|\leq 4 and allows one to calculate and investigate the corresponding colored HOMFLY polynomials for arbitrary 3-strand and arborescent knots.

Racah matrices and hidden integrability in evolution of knots

We construct a general procedure to extract the exclusive Racah matrices S and \bar S from the inclusive 3-strand mixing matrices by the evolution method and apply it to the first simple representations R =[1], [2], [3] and [2,2]. The matrices S and \bar S relate respectively the maps (R\otimes R)\otimes \bar R\longrightarrow R with R\otimes (R \otimes \bar R) \longrightarrow R and (R\otimes \bar R) \otimes R \longrightarrow R with R\otimes (\bar R \otimes R) \longrightarrow R. They are building blocks for the colored HOMFLY polynomials of arbitrary arborescent (double fat) knots. Remarkably, the calculation realizes an unexpected integrability property underlying the evolution matrices.

Spectral duality in elliptic systems, six-dimensional gauge theories and topological strings

We consider Dotsenko-Fateev matrix models associated with compactified Calabi-Yau threefolds. They can be constructed with the help of explicit expressions for refined topological vertex, i.e. are directly related to the corresponding topological string amplitudes. We describe a correspondence between these amplitudes, elliptic and affine type Selberg integrals and gauge theories in five and six dimensions with various matter content. We show that the theories of this type are connected by spectral dualities, which can be also seen at the level of elliptic Seiberg-Witten integrable systems. The most interesting are the spectral duality between the XYZ spin chain and the Ruijsenaars system, which is further lifted to self-duality of the double elliptic system.

Superpolynomials for toric knots from evolution induced by cut-and-join operators

The colored HOMFLY polynomials, which describe Wilson loop averages in Chern-Simons theory, possess an especially simple representation for torus knots, which begins from quantum R-matrix and ends up with a trivially-looking split W representation familiar from character calculus applications to matrix models and Hurwitz theory. Substitution of MacDonald polynomials for characters in these formulas provides a very simple description of "superpolynomials", much simpler than the recently studied alternative which deforms relation to the WZNW theory and explicitly involves the Littlewood-Richardson coefficients. A lot of explicit expressions are presented for different representations (Young diagrams), many of them new. In particular, we provide the superpolynomial P_[1]^[m,km\pm 1] for arbitrary m and k. The procedure is not restricted to the fundamental (all antisymmetric) representations and the torus knots, still in these cases some subtleties persist.

Colored HOMFLY polynomials for the pretzel knots and links

With the help of the evolution method we calculate all HOMFLY polynomials in all symmetric representations [r] for a huge family of (generalized) pretzel links, which are made from g+1 two strand braids, parallel or antiparallel, and depend on g+1 integer numbers. We demonstrate that they possess a pronounced new structure: are decomposed into a sum of a product of g+1 elementary polynomials, which are obtained from the evolution eigenvalues by rotation with the help of rescaled SU_q(N) Racah matrix, for which we provide an explicit expression. The generalized pretzel family contains many mutants, undistinguishable by symmetric HOMFLY polynomials, hence, the extension of our results to non-symmetric representations R is a challenging open problem. To this end, a non-trivial generalization of the suggested formula can be conjectured for entire family with arbitrary g and R.

Colored HOMFLY polynomials of knots presented as double fat diagrams

Many knots and links in S^3 can be drawn as gluing of three manifolds with one or more four-punctured S^2 boundaries. We call these knot diagrams as double fat graphs whose invariants involve only the knowledge of the fusion and the braiding matrices of four-strand braids. Incorporating the properties of four-point conformal blocks in WZNW models, we conjecture colored HOMFLY polynomials for these double fat graphs where the color can be rectangular or non-rectangular representation. With the recent work of Gu-Jockers, the fusion matrices for the non-rectangular [21] representation, the first which involves multiplicity is known. We verify our conjecture by comparing with the [21] colored HOMFLY of many knots, obtained as closure of three braids. The conjectured form is computationally very effective leading to writing [21]-colored HOMFLY polynomials for many pretzel type knots and non-pretzel type knots. In particular, we find class of pretzel mutants which are distinguished and another class of mutants which cannot be distinguished by [21] representation. The difference between the [21]-colored HOMFLY of two mutants seems to have a general form, with A-dependence completely defined by the old conjecture due to Morton and Cromwell. In particular, we check it for an entire multi-parametric family of mutant knots evaluated using evolution method.

Colored knot polynomials. HOMFLY in representation [2,1]

This paper starts a systematic description of colored knot polynomials, beginning from the first non-(anti)symmetric representation R=[2,1]. The project involves several steps: (i) parametrization of big families of knots a la arXiv:1506.00339, (ii) evaluating Racah/mixing matrices for various numbers of strands in various representations a la arXiv:1112.2654, (iii) tabulating and collecting the results at www.knotebook.org. In this paper we discuss only representation R=[2,1] and construct all necessary ingredients that allow one to evaluate knot/links represented by three strand closed parallel braids with inserted double-fat fingers. In particular, it is used to evaluate knots from a 7-parametric family: this family contains over 80% of knots with up to 10 intersections, but does not include mutants.

Is pentaquark doublet a hadronic molecule?

A recently announced discovery by LHCb of a doublet of overlapping pentaquark resonances poses a question of what can be the origin of this doublet structure. We attract attention to the fact that such degeneracy could naturally arise if constituent "baryon" and "meson" were in the colored rather than colorless states. This is an appealing possibility, also because in such a case the pentaquark state would be no less "elementary" than the other hadrons, and would provide a chance for essentially new non-Abelian chemistry.

Knot invariants from Virasoro related representation and pretzel knots

We remind the method to calculate colored Jones polynomials for the plat representations of knot diagrams from the knowledge of modular transformation (monodromies) of Virasoro conformal blocks with insertions of degenerate fields. As an illustration we use a rich family of pretzel knots, lying on a surface of arbitrary genus g, which was recently analyzed by the evolution method. Further generalizations can be to generic Virasoro modular transformations, provided by integral kernels, which can lead to the Hikami invariants.

On elementary proof of AGT relations from six dimensions

The actual definition of the Nekrasov functions participating in the AGT relations implies a peculiar choice of contours in the LMNS and Dotsenko-Fateev integrals. Once made explicit and applied to the original triply-deformed (6-dimensional) version of these integrals, this approach reduces the AGT relations to symmetry in q_{1,2,3}, which is just an elementary identity for an appropriate choice of the integration contour (which is, however, a little non-traditional). We illustrate this idea with the simplest example of N=(1,1) U(1) SYM in six dimensions, however, all other cases can be evidently considered in a completely similar way.

We propose an improved method for the atmospheric extinction reduction within optical photometry. Our method is based on the simultaneous multicolor observations of photometric standards. Such data are now available within the modern wide-field sky surveys and contain a large amount of information about instant atmospheric conditions. So, it became possible to estimate the extinction parameters on the basis of a quite short observational dataset and, hence, to trace the rapid stars twinkling accurately. Having been developed for a new MiniMegaTORTORA observational system, the proposed method can be adopted for a wide range of modern observational programs.

On the Nonrelativistic 2D Purely Magnetic Supersymmetric Pauli Operator

The Complete Manifold of Ground State Eigenfunctions for the Purely Magnetic 2D Pauli Operator is considered as a by-product of the new reduction found by the present authors few years ago for the Algebrogeometric Inverse Spectral Data (i.e. Riemann Surfaces and Divisors). This reduction is associated with the (2+1) Soliton Hierarhy containing a 2D analog of the famous "Burgers System". This article contains also exposition of the previous works made since 1980 including the first topological ideas in the space of quasimomenta. We present here also new results dedicated to the self-adjoint boundary problems for Pauli Operator. SU(2)/SL(2) knot invariants and KS monodromies

We review the Reshetikhin-Turaev approach to construction of non-compact knot invariants involving R-matrices associated with infinite-dimensional representations, primarily those made from Faddeev's quantum dilogarithm. The corresponding formulas can be obtained from modular transformations of conformal blocks as their Kontsevich-Soibelman monodromies and are presented in the form of transcendental integrals, where the main issue is manipulation with integration contours. We discuss possibilities to extract more explicit and handy expressions which can be compared with the ordinary (compact) knot polynomials coming from finite-dimensional representations of simple Lie algebras, with their limits and properties. In particular, the quantum A-polynomials, difference equations for colored Jones polynomials should be the same, just in non-compact case the equations are homogeneous, while they have a non-trivial right-hand side for ordinary Jones polynomials.

Towards effective topological field theory for knots

Construction of (colored) knot polynomials for double-fat graphs is further generalized to the case when "fingers" and "propagators" are substituting R-matrices in arbitrary closed braids with m-strands. Original version of arXiv:1504.00371 corresponds to the case m=2, and our generalizations sheds additional light on the structure of those mysterious formulas. Explicit expressions are now combined from Racah matrices of the type $R\otimes R\otimes\bar R\longrightarrow \bar R$ and mixing matrices in the sectors $R^{\otimes 3}\longrightarrow Q$. Further extension is provided by composition rules, allowing to glue two blocks, connected by an m-strand braid (they generalize the product formula for ordinary composite knots with m=1).

Is the Standard Model saved asymptotically by conformal symmetry?

It is pointed out that the top-quark and Higgs masses and the Higgs VEV satisfy with great accuracy the relations 4m_H^2=2m_T^2=v^2, which are very special and reminiscent of analogous ones at Argyres - Douglas points with enhanced conformal symmetry. Furthermore, the RG evolution of the corresponding Higgs self-interaction and Yukawa couplings λ(0)=1/8 and y(0)=1 leads to the free-field stable point λ(M_Pl)= \dot λ(M_Pl)=0 in the pure scalar sector at the Planck scale, also suggesting enhanced conformal symmetry. Thus, it is conceivable that the Standard Model is the low-energy limit of a distinct special theory with (super?) conformal symmetry at the Planck scale. In the context of such a "scenario" one may further speculate that the Higgs particle is the Goldstone boson of (partly) spontaneously broken conformal symmetry. This would simultaneously resolve the hierarchy and Landau pole problems in the scalar sector and would provide a nearly flat potential with two almost degenerate minima at the electroweak and Planck scales.

Using the recently proposed differential hierarchy (Z-expansion) technique, we obtain a general expression for the HOMFLY polynomials in two arbitrary symmetric representations of link families, including Whitehead and Borromean links. Among other things, this allows us to check and confirm the recent conjecture of arXiv:1304.5778 that the large representation limit (the same as considered in the knot volume conjecture) of this quantity matches the prediction from mirror symmetry consideration. We also provide, using the evolution method, the HOMFLY polynomial in two arbitrary symmetric representations for an arbitrary member of the one-parametric family of 2-component 3-strand links, which includes the Hopf and Whitehead links.

Matching branches of non-perturbative conformal block at its singularity divisor

Conformal block is a function of many variables, usually represented as a formal series, with coefficients which are certain matrix elements in the chiral (e.g. Virasoro) algebra. Non-perturbative conformal block is a multi-valued function, defined globally over the space of dimensions, with many branches and, perhaps, additional free parameters, not seen at the perturbative level. We discuss additional complications of non-perturbative description, caused by the fact that all the best studied examples of conformal blocks lie at the singularity locus in the moduli space (at divisors of the coefficients or, simply, at zeroes of the Kac determinant). A typical example is the Ashkin-Teller point, where at least two naive non-perturbative expressions are provided by elliptic Dotsenko-Fateev integral and by the celebrated Zamolodchikov formula in terms of theta-constants, and they are different. The situation is somewhat similar at the Ising and other minimal model points.

On colored HOMFLY polynomials for twist knots

Recent results of J.Gu and H.Jockers provide the lacking initial conditions for the evolution method in the case of the first non-trivially colored HOMFLY polynomials H_{[21]} for the family of twist knots. We describe this application of the evolution method, which finally allows one to penetrate through the wall between (anti)symmetric and non-rectangular representations for a whole family. We reveal the necessary deformation of the differential expansion, what, together with the recently suggested matrix model approach gives new opportunities to guess what it could be for a generic representation, at least for the family of twist knots.

On genus expansion of superpolynomials

Recently it was shown that the (Ooguri-Vafa) generating function of HOMFLY polynomials is the Hurwitz partition function, i.e. that the dependence of the HOMFLY polynomials on representation R is naturally captured by symmetric group characters (cut-and-join eigenvalues). The genus expansion and expansion through Vassiliev invariants explicitly demonstrate this phenomenon. In the present letter we claim that the superpolynomials are not functions of such a type: symmetric group characters do not provide an adequate linear basis for their expansions. Deformation to superpolynomials is, however, straightforward in the multiplicative basis: the Casimir operators are β-deformed to Hamiltonians of the Calogero-Moser-Sutherland system. Applying this trick to the genus and Vassiliev expansions, we observe that the deformation is fully straightforward only for the thin knots. Beyond the family of thin knots additional algebraically independent terms appear in the Vassiliev and genus expansions. This can suggest that the superpolynomials do in fact contain more information about knots than the colored HOMFLY and Kauffman polynomials. However, even for the thin knots the beta-deformation is non-innocent: already in the simplest examples it seems inconsistent with the postivity of colored superpolynomials in non-(anti)symmetric representations, which also happens in I.Cherednik's (DAHA-based) approach to the torus knots.

On KP-integrable Hurwitz functions

There is now a renewed interest to the Hurwitz tau-function, counting the isomorphism classes of Belyi pairs, arising in the study of equilateral triangulations and Grothiendicks's dessins d'enfant. It is distinguished by belonging to a particular family of Hurwitz tau-functions, possessing conventional Toda/KP integrability properties. We explain how the variety of recent observations about this function fits into the general theory of matrix model tau-functions. All such quantities possess a number of different descriptions, related in a standard way: these include Toda/KP integrability, several kinds of W-representations (we describe four), two kinds of integral (multi-matrix model) descriptions (of Hermitian and Kontsevich types), Virasoro constraints, character expansion, embedding into generic set of Hurwitz tau-functions and relation to knot theory. When approached in this way, the family of models in the literature has a natural extension, and additional integrability with respect to associated new time-variables. Another member of this extended family is the Itsykson-Zuber integral.

Seiberg-Witten curves and double-elliptic integrable systems

An old conjecture claims that commuting Hamiltonians of the double-elliptic integrable system are constructed from the theta-functions associated with Riemann surfaces from the Seiberg-Witten family, with moduli treated as dynamical variables and the Seiberg-Witten differential providing the pre-symplectic structure. We describe a number of theta-constant equations needed to prove this conjecture for the $N$-particle system. These equations provide an alternative method to derive the Seiberg-Witten prepotential and we illustrate this by calculating the perturbative contribution. We provide evidence that the solutions to the commutativity equations are exhausted by the double-elliptic system and its degenerations (Calogero and Ruijsenaars systems). Further, the theta-function identities that lie behind the Poisson commutativity of the three-particle Hamiltonians are proven.

Wall Crossing Invariants: from quantum mechanics to knots

We offer a pedestrian level review of the wall-crossing invariants. The story begins from the scattering theory in quantum mechanics where the spectrum reshuffling can be related to permutations of S-matrices. In non-trivial situations, starting from spin chains and matrix models, the S-matrices are operator-valued and their algebra is described in terms of R- and mixing (Racah) U-matrices. Then, the Kontsevich-Soibelman invariants are nothing but the standard knot invariants made out of these data within the Reshetikhin-Turaev-Witten approach. The R- and Racah matrices acquire a relatively universal form in the quasiclassical limit, where the basic reshufflings with the change of moduli are those of the Stokes line. Natural from this point of view are matrices provided by the modular transformations of conformal blocks (with the usual identification R=T and U=S), and in the simplest case of the first degenerate field (2,1), when the conformal blocks satisfy a second order Shroedinger-like equation, the invariants coincide with the Jones (N=2) invariants of the associated knots. Another possibility to construct knot invariants is to realize the cluster coordinates associated with reshufflings of the Stokes lines immediately in terms of check-operators acting on the solutions to the Knizhnik-Zamolodchikov equations. Then, the R-matrices are realized as products of successive mutations in the cluster algebra and are manifestly described in terms of quantum dilogarithms ultimately leading to the Hikami construction of knot invariants.

Colored HOMFLY polynomials as multiple sums over paths or standard Young tableaux

If a knot is represented by an m-strand braid, then HOMFLY polynomial in representation R is a sum over characters in all representations Q\in R^{\otimes m}. Coefficients in this sum are traces of products of quantum R-matrices along the braid, but these matrices act in the space of intertwiners, and their size is equal to the multiplicity M_{RQ} of Q in R^{\otimes m}. If R is the fundamental representation R=[1], then M_{[1] Q} is equal to the number of paths in representation graph, which lead from the fundamental vertex [1] to the vertex Q. In the basis of paths the entries of the m-1 relevant R-matrices are associated with the pairs of paths and are non-vanishing only when the two paths either coincide or differ by at most one vertex; as a corollary R-matrices consist of just 1x1 and 2x2 blocks, given by very simple explicit expressions. If cabling method is used to color the knot with the representation R, then the braid has m|R| strands, Q have a bigger size m|R|, but only paths passing through the vertex R are included into the sums over paths which define the products and traces of the m|R|-1 relevant R-matrices. In the case of SU(N) this path sum formula can also be interpreted as a multiple sum over the standard Young tableaux. By now it provides the most effective way for evaluation of the colored HOMFLY polynomials, conventional or extended, for arbitrary braids.

Differential hierarchy and additional grading of knot polynomials

Colored knot polynomials possess a peculiar Z-expansion in certain combinations of differentials, which depends on the representation. The coefficients of this expansion are functions of the three variables (A,q,t) and can be considered as new distinguished coordinates on the space of knot polynomials, analogous to the coefficients of alternative character expansion. These new variables are decomposed in an especially simple way, when the representation is embedded into a product of the fundamental ones. The fourth grading recently proposed in arXiv:1304.3481, seems to be just a simple redefinition of these new coordinates, elegant but in no way distinguished. If so, it does not provide any new independent knot invariants, instead it can be considered as one more testimony of the hidden differential hierarchy (Z-expansion) structure behind the knot polynomials.

Evolution method and "differential hierarchy" of colored knot polynomials

We consider braids with repeating patterns inside arbitrary knots which provides a multi-parametric family of knots, depending on the "evolution" parameter, which controls the number of repetitions. The dependence of knot (super)polynomials on such evolution parameters is very easy to find. We apply this evolution method to study of the families of knots and links which include the cases with just two parallel and anti-parallel strands in the braid, like the ordinary twist and 2-strand torus knots/links and counter-oriented 2-strand links. When the answers were available before, they are immediately reproduced, and an essentially new example is added of the "double braid", which is a combination of parallel and anti-parallel 2-strand braids. This study helps us to reveal with the full clarity and partly investigate a mysterious hierarchical structure of the colored HOMFLY polynomials, at least, in (anti)symmetric representations, which extends the original observation for the figure-eight knot to many (presumably all) knots. We demonstrate that this structure is typically respected by the t-deformation to the superpolynomials.

Genus expansion of HOMFLY polynomials

In the planar limit of the 't Hooft expansion, the Wilson-loop average in 3d Chern-Simons theory (i.e. the HOMFLY polynomial) depends in a very simple way on representation (the Young diagram), so that the (knot-dependent) Ooguri-Vafa partition function becomes a trivial KP tau-function. We study higher genus corrections to this formula in the form of expansion in powers of z = q-q^{-1}. Expansion coefficients are expressed through the eigenvalues of the cut-and-join operators, i.e. symmetric group characters. Moreover, the z-expansion is naturally exponentiated. Representation through cut-and-join operators makes contact with Hurwitz theory and its sophisticated integrability properties. Our formulas describe the shape of genus expansion for the HOMFLY polynomials, which for their matrix model counterparts is usually controlled by Virasoro like constraints and AMM/EO topological recursion. The genus expansion differs from the better studied weak coupling expansion at finite number of colors N, which is described in terms of the Vassiliev invariants and Kontsevich integral.

On genus expansion of knot polynomials and hidden structure of Hurwitz tau-functions

In the genus expansion of the HOMFLY polynomials their representation dependence is naturally captured by symmetric group characters. This immediately implies that the Ooguri-Vafa partition function (OVPF) is a Hurwitz tau-function. In the planar limit involving factorizable special polynomials, it is actually a trivial exponential tau-function. In fact, in the double scaling Kashaev limit (the one associated with the volume conjecture) dominant in the genus expansion are terms associated with the symmetric representations and with the integrability preserving Casimir operators, though we stop one step from converting this fact into a clear statement about the OVPF behavior in the vicinity of q=1. Instead, we explain that the genus expansion provides a hierarchical decomposition of the Hurwitz tau-function, similar to the Takasaki-Takebe expansion of the KP tau-functions. This analogy can be helpful to develop a substitute for the universal Grassmannian description in the Hurwitz tau-functions.

S-Duality and Modular Transformation as a non-perturbative deformation of the ordinary pq-duality

A recent claim that the S-duality between 4d SUSY gauge theories, which is AGT related to the modular transformations of 2d conformal blocks, is no more than an ordinary Fourier transform at the perturbative level, is further traced down to the commutation relation [P,Q]=-i\hbar between the check-operator monodromies of the exponential resolvent operator in the underlying Dotsenko-Fateev matrix models and beta-ensembles. To this end, we treat the conformal blocks as eigenfunctions of the monodromy check operators, what is especially simple in the case of one-point toric block. The kernel of the modular transformation is then defined as the intertwiner of the two monodromies, and can be obtained straightforwardly, even when the eigenfunction interpretation of the blocks themselves is technically tedious. In this way, we provide an elementary derivation of the old expression for the modular kernel for the one-point toric conformal block.

Spectral dualities in XXZ spin chains and five dimensional gauge theories

Motivated by recent progress in the study of supersymmetric gauge theories we propose a very compact formulation of spectral duality between XXZ spin chains. The action of the quantum duality is given by the Fourier transform in the spectral parameter. We investigate the duality in various limits and, in particular, prove it for q-->1, i.e. when it reduces to the XXX/Gaudin duality. We also show that the universal difference operators are given by the normal ordering of the classical spectral curves.

Three-particle Integrable Systems with Elliptic Dependence on Momenta and Theta Function Identities

We claim that some non-trivial theta-function identities at higher genus can stand behind the Poisson commutativity of the Hamiltonians of elliptic integrable systems, which are made from the theta-functions on Jacobians of the Seiberg-Witten curves. For the case of three-particle systems the genus-2 identities are found and presented in the paper. The connection with the Macdonald identities is established. The genus-2 theta-function identities provide the direct way to construct the Poisson structure in terms of the coordinates on the Jacobian of the spectral curve and the elements of its period matrix. The Lax representations for the two-particle systems are also obtained.

A Hurwitz theory avatar of open-closed strings

We review and explain an infinite-dimensional counterpart of the Hurwitz theory realization of algebraic open-closed string model a la Moore and Lizaroiu, where the closed and open sectors are represented by conjugation classes of permutations and the pairs of permutations, i.e. by the algebra of Young diagrams and bipartite graphes respectively. An intriguing feature of this Hurwitz string model is coexistence of two different multiplications, reflecting the deep interrelation between the theory of symmetric and linear groups S_\infty and GL(\infty).

Asymptotic Hurwitz numbers

The classical Hurwitz numbers of degree n together with the Hurwitz numbers of the seamed surfaces of degree n give rise to the Klein topological field theory. We extend this construction to the Hurwitz numbers of all degrees at once. The corresponding Cardy-Frobenius algebra is induced by arbitrary Young diagrams and arbitrary bipartite graphs. It turns out to be isomorphic to the algebra of differential operators from arXiv:1210.6955 which serves a model for open-closed string theory. The operator associated with the Young diagram of the transposition of two elements coincides with the cut-and-join operator which gives rise to relations for the classical Hurwitz numbers. We prove that the operators corresponding to arbitrary Young diagrams and bipartite graphs also give rise to relations for the Hurwitz numbers.

Character expansion for HOMFLY polynomials. II. Fundamental representation. Up to five strands in braid

Character expansion is introduced and explicitly constructed for the (non-colored) HOMFLY polynomials of the simplest knots. Expansion coefficients are not the knot invariants and can depend on the choice of the braid realization. However, the method provides the simplest systematic way to construct HOMFLY polynomials directly in terms of the variable A=q^N: a much better way than the standard approach making use of the skein relations. Moreover, representation theory of the simplest quantum group SU_q(2) is sufficient to get the answers for all braids with m<5 strands. Most important we reveal a hidden hierarchical structure of expansion coefficients, what allows one to express all of them through extremely simple elementary constituents. Generalizations to arbitrary knots and arbitrary representations is straightforward.

Character expansion for HOMFLY polynomials. III. All 3-Strand braids in the first symmetric representation

We continue the program of systematic study of extended HOMFLY polynomials. Extended polynomials depend on infinitely many time variables, are close relatives of integrable tau-functions, and depend on the choice of the braid representation of the knot. They possess natural character decompositions, with coefficients which can be defined by exhaustively general formula for any particular number m of strands in the braid and any particular representation R of the Lie algebra GL(\infty). Being restricted to "the topological locus" in the space of time variables, the extended HOMFLY polynomials reproduce the ordinary knot invariants. We derive such a general formula, for m=3, when the braid is parameterized by a sequence of integers (a_1,b_1,a_2,b_2,...), and for the first non-fundamental representation R=[2]. Instead of calculating the mixing matrices directly, we deduce them from comparison with the known answers for torus and composite knots. A simple reflection symmetry converts the answer for the symmetric representation [2] into that for the antisymmetric one [1,1]. The result applies, in particular, to the figure eight knot 4_1, and was further extended to superpolynomials in arbitrary symmetric and antisymmetric representations in arXiv:1203.5978.

Comment on integrability in Dijkgraaf-Vafa beta-ensembles

We briefly discuss the recent claims that the ordinary KP/Toda integrability, which is a characteristic property of ordinary eigenvalue matrix models, persists also for the Dijkgraaf-Vafa (DV) partition functions and for the refined topological vertex. We emphasize that in both cases what is meant is a particular representation of partition functions: a peculiar sum over all DV phases in the first case and hiding the deformation parameters in a sophisticated potential in the second case, i.e. essentially a reformulation of some questions in the new theory in the language of the old one. It is at best obscure if this treatment can be made consistent with the AGT relations and even with the quantization of the underlying integrable systems in the Nekrasov-Shatashvili limit, which seem to require a full-scale beta-deformation of individual DV partition functions. Thus, it is unclear if the story of integrability is indeed closed by these recent considerations.

Eigenvalue hypothesis for Racah matrices and HOMFLY polynomials for 3-strand knots in any symmetric and antisymmetric representations

Character expansion expresses extended HOMFLY polynomials through traces of products of finite dimensional R- and Racah mixing matrices. We conjecture that the mixing matrices are expressed entirely in terms of the eigenvalues of the corresponding R-matrices. Even a weaker (and, perhaps, more reliable) version of this conjecture is sufficient to explicitly calculate HOMFLY polynomials for all the 3-strand braids in arbitrary (anti)symmetric representations. We list the examples of so obtained polynomials for V=[3] and V=[4], and they are in accordance with the known answers for torus and figure-eight knots, as well as for the colored special and Jones polynomials. This provides an indirect evidence in support of our conjecture.

Equations on knot polynomials and 3d/5d duality

We briefly review the current situation with various relations between knot/braid polynomials (Chern-Simons correlation functions), ordinary and extended, considered as functions of the representation and of the knot topology. These include linear skein relations, quadratic Plucker relations, as well as "differential" and (quantum) A-polynomial structures. We pay a special attention to identity between the A-polynomial equations for knots and Baxter equations for quantum relativistic integrable systems, related through Seiberg-Witten theory to 5d super-Yang-Mills models and through the AGT relation to the q-Virasoro algebra. This identity is an important ingredient of emerging a 3d-5d generalization of the AGT relation. The shape of the Baxter equation (including the values of coefficients) depend on the choice of the knot/braid. Thus, like the case of KP integrability, where (some, so far torus) knots parameterize particular points of the Universal Grassmannian, in this relation they parameterize particular points in the moduli space of many-body integrable systems of relativistic type.

HOMFLY and superpolynomials for figure eight knot in all symmetric and antisymmetric representations

Explicit answer is given for the HOMFLY polynomial of the figure eight knot $4_1$ in arbitrary symmetric representation R=[p]. It generalizes the old answers for p=1 and 2 and the recently derived results for p=3,4, which are fully consistent with the Ooguri-Vafa conjecture. The answer can be considered as a quantization of the σ_R = σ_{[1]}^{|R|} identity for the "special" polynomials (they define the leading asymptotics of HOMFLY at q=1), and arises in a form, convenient for comparison with the representation of the Jones polynomials as sums of dilogarithm ratios. In particular, we construct a difference equation ("non-commutative A-polynomial") in the representation variable p. Simple symmetry transformation provides also a formula for arbitrary antisymmetric (fundamental) representation R=[1^p], which also passes some obvious checks. Also straightforward is a deformation from HOMFLY to superpolynomials. Further generalizations seem possible to arbitrary Young diagrams R, but these expressions are harder to test because of the lack of alternative results, even partial.

Interplay between MacDonald and Hall-Littlewood expansions of extended torus superpolynomials

In arXiv:1106.4305 extended superpolynomials were introduced for the torus links T[m,mk+r], which are functions on the entire space of time variables and, at expense of reducing the topological invariance, possess additional algebraic properties, resembling those of the matrix model partition functions and the KP/Toda tau-functions. Not surprisingly, being a suitable extension it actually allows one to calculate the superpolynomials. These functions are defined as expansions into MacDonald polynomials, and their dependence on k is entirely captured by the action of the cut-and-join operator, like in the HOMFLY case. We suggest a simple description of the coefficients in these character expansions, by expanding the initial (at k=0) conditions for the k-evolution into the new auxiliary basis, this time provided by the Hall-Littlewood polynomials, which, hence, play a role in the description of the dual m-evolution. For illustration we list manifest expressions for a few first series, mk\pm 1, mk\pm 2, mk\pm 3, mk\pm 4. Actually all formulas were explicitly tested up to m=17 strands in the braid.

Knot polynomials in the first non-symmetric representation

We describe the explicit form and the hidden structure of the answer for the HOMFLY polynomial for the figure eight and some other 3-strand knots in representation [21]. This is the first result for non-torus knots beyond (anti)symmetric representations, and its evaluation is far more complicated. We provide a whole variety of different arguments, allowing one to guess the answer for the figure eight knot, which can be also partly used in more complicated situations. Finally we report the result of exact calculation for figure eight and some other 3-strand knots based on the previously developed sophisticated technique of multi-strand calculations. We also discuss a formula for the superpolynomial in representation [21] for the figure eight knot, which heavily relies on the conjectural form of superpolynomial expansion nearby the special polynomial point. Generalizations and details will be presented elsewhere.

Racah coefficients and extended HOMFLY polynomials for all 5-, 6- and 7-strand braids

Basing on evaluation of the Racah coefficients for SU_q(3) (which supported the earlier conjecture of their universal form) we derive explicit formulas for all the 5-, 6- and 7-strand Wilson averages in the fundamental representation of arbitrary SU(N) group (the HOMFLY polynomials). As an application, we list the answers for all 5-strand knots with 9 crossings. In fact, the 7-strand formulas are sufficient to reproduce all the HOMFLY polynomials from the katlas.org: they are all described at once by a simple explicit formula with a very transparent structure. Moreover, would the formulas for the relevant SU_q(3) Racah coefficients remain true for all other quantum groups, the paper provides a complete description of the fundamental HOMFLY polynomials for all braids with any number of strands.

S-duality as a beta-deformed Fourier transform

An attempt is made to formulate Gaiotto's S-duality relations in an explicit quantitative form. Formally the problem is that of evaluation of the Racah coefficients for the Virasoro algebra, and we approach it with the help of the matrix model representation of the AGT-related conformal blocks and Nekrasov functions. In the Seiberg-Witten limit, this S-duality reduces to the Legendre transformation. In the simplest case, its lifting to the level of Nekrasov functions is just the Fourier transform, while corrections are related to the beta-deformation. We calculate them with the help of the matrix model approach and observe that they vanish for beta=1. Explicit evaluation of the same corrections from the U_q(sl(2)) infinite-dimensional representation formulas due to B.Ponsot and J.Teshner remains an open problem.

Spectral Duality Between Heisenberg Chain and Gaudin Model

In our recent paper we described relationships between integrable systems inspired by the AGT conjecture. On the gauge theory side an integrable spin chain naturally emerges while on the conformal field theory side one obtains some special reduced Gaudin model. Two types of integrable systems were shown to be related by the spectral duality. In this paper we extend the spectral duality to the case of higher spin chains. It is proved that the N-site GL(k) Heisenberg chain is dual to the special reduced k+2-points gl(N) Gaudin model. Moreover, we construct an explicit Poisson map between the models at the classical level by performing the Dirac reduction procedure and applying the AHH duality transformation.

Spectral Duality in Integrable Systems from AGT Conjecture

We describe relationships between integrable systems with N degrees of freedom arising from the AGT conjecture. Namely, we prove the equivalence (spectral duality) between the N-cite Heisenberg spin chain and a reduced gl(N) Gaudin model both at classical and quantum level. The former one appears on the gauge theory side of the AGT relation in the Nekrasov-Shatashvili (and further the Seiberg-Witten) limit while the latter one is natural on the CFT side. At the classical level, the duality transformation relates the Seiberg-Witten differentials and spectral curves via a bispectral involution. The quantum duality extends this to the equivalence of the corresponding Baxter-Schrodinger equations (quantum spectral curves). This equivalence generalizes both the spectral self-duality between the 2x2 and NxN representations of the Toda chain and the famous AHH duality.

Torus HOMFLY as the Hall-Littlewood Polynomials

We show that the HOMFLY polynomials for torus knots T[m,n] in all fundamental representations are equal to the Hall-Littlewood polynomials in representation which depends on m, and with quantum parameter, which depends on n. This makes the long-anticipated interpretation of Wilson averages in 3d Chern-Simons theory as characters precise, at least for the torus knots, and calls for further studies in this direction. This fact is deeply related to Hall-Littlewood-MacDonald duality of character expansion of superpolynomials found in arXiv:1201.3339. In fact, the relation continues to hold for extended polynomials, but the symmetry between m and n is broken, then m is the number of strands in the braid. Besides the HOMFLY case with q=t, the torus superpolynomials are reduced to the single Hall-Littlewood characters in the two other distinguished cases: q=0 and t=0.

Character expansion for HOMFLY polynomials. I. Integrability and difference equations

We suggest to associate with each knot the set of coefficients of its HOMFLY polynomial expansion into the Schur functions. For each braid representation of the knot these coefficients are defined unambiguously as certain combinations of the Racah symbols for the algebra SU_q. Then, the HOMFLY polynomials can be extended to the entire space of time-variables. The so extended HOMFLY polynomials are no longer knot invariants, they depend on the choice of the braid representation, but instead one can naturally discuss their explicit integrable properties. The generating functions of torus knot/link coefficients are turned to satisfy the Plucker relations and can be associated with tau-function of the KP hierarchy, while generic knots correspond to more involved systems. On the other hand, using the expansion into the Schur functions, one can immediately derive difference equations (A-polynomials) for knot polynomials which play a role of the string equation. This adds to the previously demonstrated use of these character decompositions for the study of beta-deformations from HOMFLY to superpolynomials.

Integrability of Hurwitz Partition Functions. I. Summary

Partition functions often become τ-functions of integrable hierarchies, if they are considered dependent on infinite sets of parameters called time variables. The Hurwitz partition functions Z = \sum_R d_R^{2-k}χ_R(t^{(1)})...χ_R(t^{(k)})\exp(\sum_n ξ_nC_R(n)) depend on two types of such time variables, t and ξ. KP/Toda integrability in t requires that k\leq 2 and also that C_R(n) are selected in a rather special way, in particular the naive cut-and-join operators are not allowed for n>2. Integrability in ξfurther restricts the choice of C_R(n), forbidding, for example, the free cumulants. It also requires that k\leq 1. The quasiclassical integrability (the WDVV equations) is naturally present in ξvariables, but also requires a careful definition of the generating function.

Integrability properties of Hurwitz partition functions. II. Multiplication of cut-and-join operators and WDVV equations

Correlators in topological theories are given by the values of a linear form on the products of operators from a commutative associative algebra (CAA). As a corollary, partition functions of topological theory always satisfy the generalized WDVV equations. We consider the Hurwitz partition functions, associated in this way with the CAA of cut-and-join operators. The ordinary Hurwitz numbers for a given number of sheets in the covering provide trivial (sums of exponentials) solutions to the WDVV equations, with finite number of time-variables. The generalized Hurwitz numbers from arXiv:0904.4227 provide a non-trivial solution with infinite number of times. The simplest solution of this type is associated with a subring, generated by the dilatation operators tr X(d/dX).

On 3d extensions of AGT relation

An extension of the AGT relation from two to three dimensions begins from connecting the theory on domain wall between some two S-dual SYM models with the 3d Chern-Simons theory. The simplest kind of such a relation would presumably connect traces of the modular kernels in 2d conformal theory with knot invariants. Indeed, the both quantities are very similar, especially if represented as integrals of the products of quantum dilogarithm functions. However, there are also various differences, especially in the "conservation laws" for integration variables, which hold for the monodromy traces, but not for the knot invariants. We also discuss another possibility: interpretation of knot invariants as solutions to the Baxter equations for the relativistic Toda system. This implies another AGT like relation: between 3d Chern-Simons theory and the Nekrasov-Shatashvili limit of the 5d SYM.

Proving AGT conjecture as HS duality: extension to five dimensions

We extend the proof from arXiv:1012.3137, which interprets the AGT relation as the Hubbard-Stratonovich duality relation to the case of 5d gauge theories. This involves an additional q-deformation. Not surprisingly, the extension turns out to be trivial: it is enough to substitute all relevant numbers by q-numbers in all the formulas, Dotsenko-Fateev integrals by the Jackson sums and the Jack polynomials by the MacDonald ones. The problem with extra poles in individual Nekrasov functions continues to exist, therefore, such a proof works only for β= 1, i.e. for q=t in MacDonald's notation. For β\ne 1 the conformal blocks are related in this way to a non-Nekrasov decomposition of the LMNS partition function into a double sum over Young diagrams.

Resolvents and Seiberg-Witten representation for Gaussian beta-ensemble

The exact free energy of matrix model always obeys the Seiberg-Witten (SW) equations on a complex curve defined by singularities of the quasiclassical resolvent. The role of SW differential is played by the exact one-point resolvent. We show that these properties are preserved in generalization of matrix models to beta-ensembles. However, since the integrability and Harer-Zagier topological recursion are still unavailable for beta-ensembles, we need to rely upon the ordinary AMM/EO recursion to evaluate the first terms of the genus expansion. Consideration in this paper is restricted to the Gaussian model.

2D Schrodinger Operator, (2+1) Systems and New Reductions. The 2D Burgers Hierarchy and Inverse Problem Data

The Theory of (2+1) Systems based on 2D Schrodinger Operator was started by S.Manakov, B.Dubrovin, I.Krichever and S.Novikov in 1976. The Analog of Lax Pairs introduced by Manakov, has a form $L_t=[L,H]-fL$ ("The $L,H,f$-triples") where $L=\partial_x\partial_y+G\partial_y+S$ and $H,f$-some linear PDEs. Their Algebro-Geometric Solutions and therefore the full higher order hierarchies were constructed by B.Dubrovin, I.Krichever and S.Novikov. The Theory of 2D Inverse Spectral Problems for the Elliptic Operator $L$ with $x,y$ replaced by $z,\bar{z}$, was started by B.Dubrovin, I.Krichever and S.Novikov: The Inverse Spectral Problem Data are taken from the complex "Fermi-Curve" consisting of all Bloch-Floquet Eigenfunctions $Lψ=const$. Many interesting systems were found later. However, specific properties of the very first system, offered by Manakov for the verification of new method only, were not studied more than 10 years until B.Konopelchenko found in 1988 analogs of Backund Transformations for it. He pointed out on the "Burgers-Type Reduction". Indeed, the present authors quite recently found very interesting extensions, reductions and applications of that system both in the theory of nonlinear evolution systems (The Self-Adjoint and 2D Burgers Hierarhies were invented, and corresponding reductions of Inverse Problem Data found) and in the Spectral Theory of Important Physical Operators ("The Purely Magnetic 2D Pauli Operators"). We call this system GKMMN by the names of authors who studied it.

A direct proof of AGT conjecture at beta = 1

The AGT conjecture claims an equivalence of conformal blocks in 2d CFT and sums of Nekrasov functions (instantonic sums in 4d SUSY gauge theory). The conformal blocks can be presented as Dotsenko-Fateev beta-ensembles, hence, the AGT conjecture implies the equality between Dotsenko-Fateev beta-ensembles and the Nekrasov functions. In this paper, we prove it in a particular case of beta=1 (which corresponds to c = 1 at the conformal side and to epsilon_1 + epsilon_2 = 0 at the gauge theory side) in a very direct way. The central role is played by representation of the Nekrasov functions through correlators of characters (Schur polynomials) in the Selberg matrix models. We mostly concentrate on the case of SU(2) with 4 fundamentals, the extension to other cases being straightforward. The most obscure part is extending to an arbitrary beta: for beta \neq 1, the Selberg integrals that we use do not reproduce single Nekrasov functions, but only sums of them.

Algebra of differential operators associated with Young diagrams

We establish a correspondence between Young diagrams and differential operators of infinitely many variables. These operators form a commutative associative algebra isomorphic to the algebra of the conjugated classes of finite permutations of the set of natural numbers. The Schur functions form a complete system of common eigenfunctions of these differential operators, and their eigenvalues are expressed through the characters of symmetric groups. The structure constants of the algebra are expressed through the Hurwitz numbers.

Brezin-Gross-Witten model as "pure gauge" limit of Selberg integrals

The AGT relation identifies the Nekrasov functions for various N=2 SUSY gauge theories with the 2d conformal blocks, which possess explicit Dotsenko-Fateev matrix model (beta-ensemble) representations the latter being polylinear combinations of Selberg integrals. The "pure gauge" limit of these matrix models is, however, a non-trivial multiscaling large-N limit, which requires a separate investigation. We show that in this pure gauge limit the Selberg integrals turn into averages in a Brezin-Gross-Witten (BGW) model. Thus, the Nekrasov function for pure SU(2) theory acquires a form very much reminiscent of the AMM decomposition formula for some model X into a pair of the BGW models. At the same time, X, which still has to be found, is the pure gauge limit of the elliptic Selberg integral. Presumably, it is again a BGW model, only in the Dijkgraaf-Vafa double cut phase.

Conformal blocks as Dotsenko-Fateev Integral Discriminants

As anticipated in [1], elaborated in [2-4], and explicitly formulated in [5], the Dotsenko-Fateev integral discriminant coincides with conformal blocks, thus providing an elegant approach to the AGT conjecture, without any reference to an auxiliary subject of Nekrasov functions. Internal dimensions of conformal blocks in this identification are associated with the choice of contours: parameters of the DV phase of the corresponding matrix models. In this paper we provide further evidence in support of this identity for the 6-parametric family of the 4-point spherical conformal blocks, up to level 3 and for arbitrary values of external dimensions and central charges. We also extend this result to multi-point spherical functions and comment on a similar description of the 1-point function on a torus.

Matrix model version of AGT conjecture and generalized Selberg integrals

Operator product expansion (OPE) of two operators in two-dimensional conformal field theory includes a sum over Virasoro descendants of other operator with universal coefficients, dictated exclusively by properties of the Virasoro algebra and independent of choice of the particular conformal model. In the free field model, these coefficients arise only with a special "conservation" relation imposed on the three dimensions of the operators involved in OPE. We demonstrate that the coefficients for the three unconstrained dimensions arise in the free field formalism when additional Dotsenko-Fateev integrals are inserted between the positions of the two original operators in the product. If such coefficients are combined to form an $n$-point conformal block on Riemann sphere, one reproduces the earlier conjectured $β$-ensemble representation of conformal blocks, thus proving this (matrix model) version of the celebrated AGT relation. The statement can also be regarded as a relation between the $3j$-symbols of the Virasoro algebra and the slightly generalized Selberg integrals $I_Y$, associated with arbitrary Young diagrams. The conformal blocks are multilinear combinations of such integrals and the remaining part of the original AGT conjecture relates them to the Nekrasov functions which have exactly the same structure.

New Reductions and Nonlinear Systems for 2D Schrodinger Operators

New Completely Integrable (2+1)-System is studied. It is based on the so-called L-A-B-triples $L_t=[H,L]-fL$ where L is a 2D Schrodinger Operator. This approach was invented by S.Manakov and B.Dubrovin, I.Krichever, S.Novikov(DKN) in the works published in 1976. A nonstandard reduction for the 2D Schrodinger Operator (completely different from the one found by S.Novikov and A.Veselov in 1984) compatible with time dynamics of the new Nonlinear System, is studied here. It can be naturally treated as a 2D extension of the famous Burgers System. The Algebro-Geometric (AG) Periodic Solutions here are very specific and unusual (for general and reduced cases). The reduced system is linearizable like Burgers. However, the general one (and probably the reduced one also) certainly lead in the stationary AG case to the nonstandard examples of algebraic curves $Γ\subset W$ in the full complex 2D manifold of Bloch-Floquet functions W for the periodic elliptic 2D operator H where $Hψ(x,y,P)=λ(P)ψ(x,y,P),P\in Γ$. However, in the nontrivial case the operators are nonselfadjoint. A Conjecture is formulated that for the nontrivial selfadjoint elliptic 2D Schrodinger operators H with periodic coefficients The Whole 2D Complex Manifolds W cannot not contain any Zariski open part of algebraic curve $Γ$ except maybe one selected level $Hψ=const$ found in 1976 by DKN. Version 2 contains new results. It also corrects some non-accurate claims; in particular, the non-reduced system is non-linearizable in any trivial sense. In version 3 a misprint in the formulation of Theorem 1 was corrected.

On "Dotsenko-Fateev" representation of the toric conformal blocks

We demonstrate that the recent ansatz of arXiv:1009.5553, inspired by the original remark due to R.Dijkgraaf and C.Vafa, reproduces the toric conformal blocks in the same sense that the spherical blocks are given by the integral representation of arXiv:1001.0563 with a peculiar choice of open integration contours for screening insertions. In other words, we provide some evidence that the toric conformal blocks are reproduced by appropriate beta-ensembles not only in the large-N limit, but also at finite N. The check is explicitly performed at the first two levels for the 1-point toric functions. Generalizations to higher genera are briefly discussed.

On AGT Relations with Surface Operator Insertion and Stationary Limit of Beta-Ensembles

We present a summary of current knowledge about the AGT relations for conformal blocks with additional insertion of the simplest degenerate operator, and a special choice of the corresponding intermediate dimension, when the conformal blocks satisfy hypergeometric-type differential equations in position of the degenerate operator. A special attention is devoted to representation of conformal block through the beta-ensemble resolvents and to its asymptotics in the limit of large dimensions (both external and intermediate) taken asymmetrically in terms of the deformation epsilon-parameters. The next-to-leading term in the asymptotics defines the generating differential in the Bohr-Sommerfeld representation of the one-parameter deformed Seiberg-Witten prepotentials (whose full two-parameter deformation leads to Nekrasov functions). This generating differential is also shown to be the one-parameter version of the single-point resolvent for the corresponding beta-ensemble, and its periods in the perturbative limit of the gauge theory are expressed through the ratios of the Harish-Chandra function. The Shrödinger/Baxter equations, considered earlier in this context, directly follow from the differential equations for the degenerate conformal block. This provides a powerful method for evaluation of the single-deformed prepotentials, and even for the Seiberg-Witten prepotentials themselves. We mostly concentrate on the representative case of the insertion into the four-point block on sphere and one-point block on torus.

On Combinatorial Expansions of Conformal Blocks

In a recent paper (arXiv:0906.3219) the representation of Nekrasov partition function in terms of nontrivial two-dimensional conformal field theory has been suggested. For non-vanishing value of the deformation parameter ε=ε_1+ε_2 the instanton partition function is identified with a conformal block of Liouville theory with the central charge c = 1+ 6ε^2/ε_1ε_2. If reversed, this observation means that the universal part of conformal blocks, which is the same for all two-dimensional conformal theories with non-degenerate Virasoro representations, possesses a non-trivial decomposition into sum over sets of the Young diagrams, different from the natural decomposition studied in conformal field theory. We provide some details about this intriguing new development in the simplest case of the four-point correlation functions.

On the Ground Level of Purely Magnetic Algebro-Geometric 2D Pauli Operator (spin 1/2)

Full manifold of the complex Bloch-Floquet eigenfunctions is investigated for the ground level of the purely magnetic 2D Pauli operators (equal to zero because of supersymmetry). Deep connection of it with the 2D analog of the "Burgers Nonlinear Hierarchy" plays fundamental role here. Everything is completely calculated for the broad class of Algebro-Geometric operators found in this work for this case. For the case of nonzero flux the ground states were found by Aharonov-Casher (1979) for the rapidly decreasing fields, and by Dubrovin-Novikov (1980) for the periodic fields. No Algebro-Geometric operators where known in the case of nonzero flux. For genus $g=1$ we found periodic operators with zero flux, singular magnetic fields and Bohm-Aharonov phenomenon. Our arguments imply that the delta-term really does not affect seriously the spectrum nearby of the ground state. For $g>1$ our theory requires to use only algebraic curves with selected point leading to the solutions elliptic in the variable $x$ for KdV and KP in order to get periodic magnetic fields. The algebro-geometric case of genus zero leads, in particular, to the slowly decreasing lump-like magnetic fields with especially interesting variety of ground states in the Hilbert Space $\cL_2(\bR^2)$.

Towards a proof of AGT conjecture by methods of matrix models

A matrix model approach to proof of the AGT relation is briefly reviewed. It starts from the substitution of conformal blocks by the Dotsenko-Fateev beta-ensemble averages and Nekrasov functions by a double deformation of the exponentiated Seiberg-Witten prepotential in beta \neq 1 and g_s \neq 0 directions. Establishing the equality of these two quantities is a typical matrix model problem, and it presumably can be ascertained by investigation of integrability properties and developing an associated Harer-Zagier technique for evaluation of the exact resolvent.

BGWM as Second Constituent of Complex Matrix Model

Earlier we explained that partition functions of various matrix models can be constructed from that of the cubic Kontsevich model, which, therefore, becomes a basic elementary building block in "M-theory" of matrix models. However, the less topical complex matrix model appeared to be an exception: its decomposition involved not only the Kontsevich tau-function but also another constituent, which we now identify as the Brezin-Gross-Witten (BGW) partition function. The BGW tau-function can be represented either as a generating function of all unitary-matrix integrals or as a Kontsevich-Penner model with potential 1/X (instead of X^3 in the cubic Kontsevich model).

Matrix Model Conjecture for Exact BS Periods and Nekrasov Functions

We give a concise summary of the impressive recent development unifying a number of different fundamental subjects. The quiver Nekrasov functions (generalized hypergeometric series) form a full basis for all conformal blocks of the Virasoro algebra and are sufficient to provide the same for some (special) conformal blocks of W-algebras. They can be described in terms of Seiberg-Witten theory, with the SW differential given by the 1-point resolvent in the DV phase of the quiver (discrete or conformal) matrix model (β-ensemble), dS = ydz + O(ε^2) = \sum_p ε^{2p} ρ_β^{(p|1)}(z), where εand βare related to the LNS parameters ε_1 and ε_2. This provides explicit formulas for conformal blocks in terms of analytically continued contour integrals and resolves the old puzzle of the free-field description of generic conformal blocks through the Dotsenko-Fateev integrals. Most important, this completes the GKMMM description of SW theory in terms of integrability theory with the help of exact BS integrals, and provides an extended manifestation of the basic principle which states that the effective actions are the tau-functions of integrable hierarchies.

Nekrasov Functions and Exact Bohr-Sommerfeld Integrals

In the case of SU(2), associated by the AGT relation to the 2d Liouville theory, the Seiberg-Witten prepotential is constructed from the Bohr-Sommerfeld periods of 1d sine-Gordon model. If the same construction is literally applied to monodromies of exact wave functions, the prepotential turns into the one-parametric Nekrasov prepotential F(a,ε_1) with the other epsilon parameter vanishing, ε_2=0, and ε_1 playing the role of the Planck constant in the sine-Gordon Shroedinger equation, \hbar=ε_1. This seems to be in accordance with the recent claim in arXiv:0908.4052 and poses a problem of describing the full Nekrasov function as a seemingly straightforward double-parametric quantization of sine-Gordon model. This also provides a new link between the Liouville and sine-Gordon theories.

Nekrasov Functions from Exact BS Periods: the Case of SU(N)

In arXiv:0910.5670 we suggested that the Nekrasov function with one non-vanishing deformation parameter εis obtained by the standard Seiberg-Witten contour-integral construction. The only difference is that the Seiberg-Witten differential pdx is substituted by its quantized version for the corresponding integrable system, and contour integrals become exact monodromies of the wave function. This provides an explicit formulation of the earlier guess in arXiv:0908.4052. In this paper we successfully check this suggestion in the first order in ε^2 and the first order in instanton expansion for the SU(N) model, where non-trivial is already consistency of the so deformed Seiberg-Witten equations.

Deviation from Alday-Maldacena Duality For Wavy Circle

Alday-Maldacena conjecture is that the area A_P of the minimal surface in AdS_5 space with a boundary P, located in Euclidean space at infinity of AdS_5, coincides with a double integral D_P along P, the Abelian Wilson average in an auxiliary dual model. The boundary P is a polygon formed by momenta of n external light-like particles in N=4 SYM theory, and in a certain n=infty limit it can be substituted by an arbitrary smooth curve (wavy circle). The Alday-Maldacena conjecture is known to be violated for n>5, when it fails to be supported by the peculiar global conformal invariance, however, the structure of deviations remains obscure. The case of wavy lines can appear more convenient for analysis of these deviations due to the systematic method developed in arXiv:0803.1547 for (perturbative) evaluation of minimal areas, which is not yet available in the presence of angles at finite n. We correct a mistake in that paper and explicitly evaluate the h^2\bar h^2 terms, where the first deviation from the Alday-Maldacena duality arises for the wavy circle.

If LHC is a Mini-Time-Machines Factory, Can We Notice?

Assuming the hypothesis of TeV-scale multi-dimensional gravity, one can imagine that at LHC not only mini-black-holes (MBH) will be intensively created, but also other exotic gravitational configurations, including hypothetical mini-time-machines (MTM). Like MBH, they should quickly evaporate, but one can wonder if their temporal existence at the moment of high-energy collision can leave any traces in the observable data. We briefly discuss five thinkable effects: (i) change of the energy spectrum due to the frequency-filtration property of MTM, (ii) possible production of anomalously energetic particles, accelerated by passing many times through gravitational field inside the MTM, (iii) acceleration of particle decays, since the proper time of a particle moving inside MTM can strongly exceed the laboratory time, (iv) CPT and naive unitarity violation (thermalization) due to effective non-local interactions caused by MTM and to possible ambiguity in the population of closed world-lines inside MTM, (v) collective effects due to conversion of a single particle into a bunch of its co-existing copies within the MTM. Despite possible particle-antiparticle conversion inside MTM, they do not seem to produce any specific CP-violation effects.

M-Theory of Matrix Models

Small M-theories unify various models of a given family in the same way as the M-theory unifies a variety of superstring models. We consider this idea in application to the family of eigenvalue matrix models: their M-theory unifies various branches of Hermitean matrix model (including Dijkgraaf-Vafa partition functions) with Kontsevich tau-function. Moreover, the corresponding duality relations look like direct analogues of instanton and meron decompositions, familiar from Yang-Mills theory.

Matrix Models vs. Matrix Integrals

In a brief review, we discuss interrelations between arbitrary solutions of the loop equations that describe Hermitean one-matrix model and particular (multi-cut) solutions that describe concrete matrix integrals. These latter ones enjoy a series of specific properties and, in particular, are described in terms of Seiberg-Witten-Whitham theory. The simplest example of ordinary integral is considered in detail.

On the Need for Phenomenological Theory of P-Vortices or Does Spaghetti Confinement Pattern Admit Condensed-Matter Analogies?

Usually the intuition from condensed-matter physics is used to provide ideas for possible confinement mechanisms in gauge theories. Today, with a clear but puzzling ``spaghetti'' confinement pattern, arising after a decade of lattice computer experiments, which implies formation of a fluctuating net of peculiar magnetic vortices rather than condensation of the homogeneously distributed magnetic monopoles, the time is coming to reverse the logic and search for similar patterns in condensed matter systems. The main thing to look for in a condensed matter setup is the simultaneous existence of narrow tubes ($P$-vortices or 1-branes) of direction-changing electric field and broader tubes (Abrikosov lines) of magnetic field, a pattern dual to the one, presumably underlying confinement in gluodynamics. As a possible place for this search we suggest systems with coexisting charge-density waves and superconductivity.

In particular, we prove that the partition function of the Hermitean one-matrix model in the planar (large $N$) limit coincides with the prepotential of the corresponding SW theory. This partition function is the logarithm of a Whitham $τ$-function. The corresponding Whitham hierarchy is explicitly constructed. The double-point problem is solved.

The Ruijsenaars-Schneider Model in the Context of Seiberg-Witten Theory

The compactification of five dimensional N=2 SUSY Yang-Mills (YM) theory onto a circle provides a four dimensional YM model with N=4 SUSY. This supersymmetry can be broken down to N=2 if non-trivial boundary conditions in the compact dimension, ϕ(x_5 +R) = e^{2πiε}ϕ(x_5), are imposed on half of the fields. This two-parameter (R,ε) family of compactifications includes as particular limits most of the previously studied four dimensional N=2 SUSY YM models with supermultiplets in the adjoint representation of the gauge group. The finite-dimensional integrable system associated to these theories via the Seiberg-Witten construction is the generic elliptic Ruijsenaars-Schneider model. In particular the perturbative (weak coupling) limit is described by the trigonometric Ruijsenaars-Schneider model.

More Evidence for the WDVV Equations in N=2 SUSY Yang-Mills Theories

We consider 4d and 5d N=2 supersymmetric theories and demonstrate that in general their Seiberg-Witten prepotentials satisfy the Witten-Dijkgraaf-Verlinde-Verlinde (WDVV) equations. General proof for the Yang-Mills models (with matter in the first fundamental representation) makes use of the hyperelliptic curves and underlying integrable systems. A wide class of examples is discussed, it contains few understandable exceptions. In particular, in perturbative regime of 5d theories in addition to naive field theory expectations some extra terms appear, like it happens in heterotic string models. We consider also the example of the Yang-Mills theory with matter hypermultiplet in the adjoint representation (related to the elliptic Calogero-Moser system) when the standard WDVV equations do not hold.

WDVV Equations from Algebra of Forms

A class of solutions to the WDVV equations is provided by period matrices of hyperelliptic Riemann surfaces, with or without punctures. The equations themselves reflect associativity of explicitly described multiplicative algebra of (possibly meromorphic) 1-differentials, which holds at least in the hyperelliptic case. This construction is direct generalization of the old one, involving the ring of polynomials factorized over an ideal, and is inspired by the study of the Seiberg-Witten theory. It has potential to be further extended to reveal algebraic structures underlying the theory of quantum cohomologies and the prepotentials in string models with N=2 supersymmetry.

Liouville Type Models in Group Theory Framework. I. Finite-Dimensional Algebras

In the series of papers we represent the ``Whittaker'' wave functional of $d+1$-dimensional Liouville model as a correlator in $d+0$-dimensional theory of the sine-Gordon type (for $d=0$ and $1$). Asypmtotics of this wave function is characterized by the Harish-Chandra function, which is shown to be a product of simple $Γ$-function factors over all positive roots of the corresponding algebras (finite-dimensional for $d=0$ and affine for $d=1$). This is in nice correspondence with the recent results on 2- and 3-point correlators in $1+1$ Liouville model, where emergence of peculiar double-periodicity is observed. The Whittaker wave functions of $d+1$-dimensional non-affine ("conformal") Toda type models are given by simple averages in the $d+0$ dimensional theories of the affine Toda type. This phenomenon is in obvious parallel with representation of the free-field wave functional, which is originally a Gaussian integral over interior of a $d+1$-dimensional disk with given boundary conditions, as a (non-local) quadratic integral over the $d$-dimensional boundary itself. In the present paper we mostly concentrate on the finite-dimensional case. The results for finite-dimensional "Iwasawa" Whittaker functions were known, and we present their survey. We also construct new "Gauss" Whittaker functions.

Non-Standard KP Evolution and Quantum $τ$-function

One possible way to fix partly a ``canonical definition'' of $τ$-functions beyond the conventional KP/Toda framework could be to postulate that evolution operators are {\it always} group elements. We discuss implications of this postulate for the first non-trivial case: fundamental representations of quantum groups $SL_q(N)$. It appears that the most suited (simple) for quantum deformation framework is some non-standard formulation of KP/Toda systems. It turns out that the postulate needs to be slightly modified to take into account that no ``nilpotent subgroups'' exist in $SL_q(N)$ for $q\neq 1$. This has some definite and simple implications for $q$-determinant-like representations of quantum $τ$-functions.

On a c-number quantum $τ$-function

We first review the properties of the conventional $τ$-functions of the KP and Toda-lattice hierarchies. A straightforward generalization is then discussed. It corresponds to passing from differential to finite-difference equations; it does not involve however the concept of operator-valued $τ$-function nor the one associated with non-Cartanian (level $k\ne1$) algebras. The present study could be useful to understand better $q$-free fields and their relation to ordinary free fields.

Quantum Deformations of $τ$-functions, Bilinear Identities and Representation Theory

This paper is a brief review of recent results on the concept of ``generalized $τ$-function'', defined as a generating function of all the matrix elements in a given highest-weight representation of a universal enveloping algebra ${\cal G}$. Despite the differences from the particular case of conventional $τ$-functions of integrable (KP and Toda lattice) hierarchies, these generic $τ$-functions also satisfy bilinear Hirota-like equations, which can be deduced from manipulations with intertwining operators. The main example considered in details is the case of quantum groups, when such $τ$-``functions'' are not $c$-numbers but take their values in non-commutative algebras (of functions on the quantum group $G$). The paper contains only illustrative calculations for the simplest case of the algebra SL(2) and its quantum counterpart $SL_q(2)$, as well as for the system of fundamental representations of SL(n).

Landau-Ginzburg Topological Theories in the Framework of GKM and Equivalent Hierarchies

We consider the deformations of ``monomial solutions'' to Generalized Kontsevich Model \cite{KMMMZ91a,KMMMZ91b} and establish the relation between the flows generated by these deformations with those of $N=2$ Landau-Ginzburg topological theories. We prove that the partition function of a generic Generalized Kontsevich Model can be presented as a product of some ``quasiclassical'' factor and non-deformed partition function which depends only on the sum of Miwa transformed and flat times. This result is important for the restoration of explicit $p-q$ symmetry in the interpolation pattern between all the $(p,q)$-minimal string models with $c<1$ and for revealing its integrable structure in $p$-direction, determined by deformations of the potential. It also implies the way in which supersymmetric Landau-Ginzburg models are embedded into the general context of GKM. From the point of view of integrable theory these deformations present a particular case of what is called equivalent hierarchies.

The Asymptotics of the Correlations Functions in $(1+1)d$ Quantum Field Theory From Finite Size Effects in Conformal Theories

Using the finite-size effects the scaling dimensions and correlation functions of the main operators in continuous and lattice models of 1d spinless Bose-gas with pairwise interaction of rather general form are obtained. The long-wave properties of these systems can be described by the Gaussian model with central charge $c=1$. The disorder operators of the extended Gaussian model are found to correspond to some non-local operators in the {\it XXZ} Heisenberg antiferromagnet. Just the same approach is applicable to fermionic systems. Scaling dimensions of operators and correlation functions in the systems of interacting Fermi-particles are obtained. We present a universal treatment for $1d$ systems of different kinds which is independent of the exact integrability and gives universal expressions for critical exponents through the thermodynamic characteristics of the system.

Towards unified theory of $2d$ gravity

We introduce a new 1-matrix model with arbitrary potential and the matrix-valued background field. Its partition function is a $τ$-function of KP-hierarchy, subjected to a kind of ${\cal L}_{-1}$-constraint. Moreover, partition function behaves smoothly in the limit of infinitely large matrices. If the potential is equal to $X^{K+1}$, this partition function becomes a $τ$-function of $K$-reduced KP-hierarchy, obeying a set of ${\cal W} _K$-algebra constraints identical to those conjectured in \cite{FKN91} for double-scaling continuum limit of $(K-1)$-matrix model. In the case of $K=2$ the statement reduces to the early established \cite{MMM91b} relation between Kontsevich model and the ordinary $2d$ quantum gravity . Kontsevich model with generic potential may be considered as interpolation between all the models of $2d$ quantum gravity with $c<1$ preserving the property of integrability and the analogue of string equation.
