Exact conformal blocks for the W-algebras, twist fields and isomonodromic deformations

We consider the conformal blocks in the theories with extended conformal W-symmetry for the integer Virasoro central charges. We show that these blocks for the generalized twist fields on sphere can be computed exactly in terms of the free field theory on the covering Riemann surface, even for a non-abelian monodromy group. The generalized twist fields are identified with particular primary fields of the W-algebra, and we propose a straightforward way to compute their W-charges. We demonstrate how these exact conformal blocks can be effectively computed using the technique arisen from the gauge theory/CFT correspondence. We discuss also their direct relation with the isomonodromic tau-function for the quasipermutation monodromy data, which can be an encouraging step on the way of definition of generic conformal blocks for W-algebra using the isomonodromy/CFT correspondence.

Free fermions, W-algebras and isomonodromic deformations

We consider the theory of multicomponent free massless fermions in two dimensions and use it for construction of representations of W-algebras at integer Virasoro central charges. We define the vertex operators in this theory in terms of solutions of the corresponding isomonodromy problem. We use this construction to get some new insights on tau-functions of the multicomponent Toda type hierarchies for the class of solutions, given by the isomonodromy vertex operators and get useful representation for the tau-function of isomonodromic deformations.

Residue Formulas for Prepotentials, Instanton Expansions and Conformal Blocks

We study the extended prepotentials for the S-duality class of quiver gauge theories, considering them as quasiclassical tau-functions, depending on gauge theory condensates and bare couplings. The residue formulas for the third derivatives of extended prepotentials are proven, which lead to effective way of their computation, as expansion in the weak-coupling regime. We discuss also the differential equations, following from the residue formulas, including the WDVV equations, proven to be valid for the $SU(2)$ quiver gauge theories. As a particular example we consider the constrained conformal quiver gauge theory, corresponding to the Zamolodchikov conformal blocks by 4d/2d duality. In this case part of the found differential equations turn into nontrivial relations for the period matrices of hyperelliptic curves.

Loop groups, Clusters, Dimers and Integrable systems

We describe a class of integrable systems on Poisson submanifolds of the affine Poisson-Lie groups $\widehat{PGL}(N)$, which can be enumerated by cyclically irreducible elements the co-extended affine Weyl groups $(\widehat{W}\times \widehat{W})^\sharp$. Their phase spaces admit cluster coordinates, whereas the integrals of motion are cluster functions. We show, that this class of integrable systems coincides with the constructed by Goncharov and Kenyon out of dimer models on a two-dimensional torus and classified by the Newton polygons. We construct the correspondence between the Weyl group elements and polygons, demonstrating that each particular integrable model admits infinitely many realisations on the Poisson-Lie groups. We also discuss the particular examples, including the relativistic Toda chains and the Schwartz-Ovsienko-Tabachnikov pentagram map.

On Lie Groups and Toda Lattices

We extend the construction of the relativistic Toda chains as integrable systems on the Poisson submanifolds in Lie groups beyond the case of A-series. For the simply-laced case this is just a direct generalization of the well-known relativistic Toda chains, and we construct explicitly the set of the Ad-invariant integrals of motion on symplectic leaves, which can be described by the Poisson quivers being just the blown up Dynkin diagrams. We also demonstrate how to get the set of "minimal" integrals of motion, using the co-multiplication rules for the corresponding Lie algebras. In the non simply-laced case the corresponding Bogoyavlensky-Coxeter-Toda systems are constructed using the Fock-Goncharov folding of the corresponding Poisson submanifolds. We discuss also how this procedure can be extended for the affine case beyond A-series, and consider explicitly an example from the affine D-series.

Tau-functions for Quiver Gauge Theories

The prepotentials for the quiver supersymmetric gauge theories are defined as quasiclassical tau-functions, depending on two different sets of variables: the parameters of the UV gauge theory or the bare compexified couplings, and the vacuum condensates of the theory in IR. The bare couplings are introduced as periods on the UV base curve, and the consistency of corresponding gradient formulas for the tau-functions is proven using the Riemann bilinear relations. It is shown, that dependence of generalised prepotentials for the quiver gauge theories upon the bare couplings turns to coincide with the corresponding formulas for the derivatives of tau-functions for the isomonodromic deformations. Computations for the SU(2) quiver gauge theories with bi- and tri-fundamental matter are performed explicitly and analysed in the context of 4d/2d correspondence.

Lie Groups, Cluster Variables and Integrable Systems

We discuss the Poisson structures on Lie groups and propose an explicit construction of the integrable models on their appropriate Poisson submanifolds. The integrals of motion for the SL(N)-series are computed in cluster variables via the Lax map. This construction, when generalised to the co-extended loop groups, gives rise not only to several alternative descriptions of relativistic Toda systems, but allows to formulate in general terms some new class of integrable models.

On Gauge Theories as Matrix Models

The relation between the Seiberg-Witten prepotentials, Nekrasov functions and matrix models is discussed. We derive quasiclassically the matrix models of Eguchi-Yang type, describing the instantonic contribution to the deformed partition functions of supersymmetric gauge theories. The exact quasiclassical solution for the case of conformal four-dimensional theory is studied in detail, and some aspects of its relation with the recently proposed logarithmic beta-ensembles are considered. We discuss also the "quantization" of this picture in terms of two-dimensional conformal theory with extended symmetry, and stress its difference from common picture of perturbative expansion a la matrix models. Instead, the representation for Nekrasov functions in terms of conformal blocks or Whittaker vector suggests some nontrivial relation with Teichmueller spaces and quantum integrable systems.

On AGT Relations with Surface Operator Insertion and Stationary Limit of Beta-Ensembles

We present a summary of current knowledge about the AGT relations for conformal blocks with additional insertion of the simplest degenerate operator, and a special choice of the corresponding intermediate dimension, when the conformal blocks satisfy hypergeometric-type differential equations in position of the degenerate operator. A special attention is devoted to representation of conformal block through the beta-ensemble resolvents and to its asymptotics in the limit of large dimensions (both external and intermediate) taken asymmetrically in terms of the deformation epsilon-parameters. The next-to-leading term in the asymptotics defines the generating differential in the Bohr-Sommerfeld representation of the one-parameter deformed Seiberg-Witten prepotentials (whose full two-parameter deformation leads to Nekrasov functions). This generating differential is also shown to be the one-parameter version of the single-point resolvent for the corresponding beta-ensemble, and its periods in the perturbative limit of the gauge theory are expressed through the ratios of the Harish-Chandra function. The Shrödinger/Baxter equations, considered earlier in this context, directly follow from the differential equations for the degenerate conformal block. This provides a powerful method for evaluation of the single-deformed prepotentials, and even for the Seiberg-Witten prepotentials themselves. We mostly concentrate on the representative case of the insertion into the four-point block on sphere and one-point block on torus.

On Combinatorial Expansions of Conformal Blocks

In a recent paper (arXiv:0906.3219) the representation of Nekrasov partition function in terms of nontrivial two-dimensional conformal field theory has been suggested. For non-vanishing value of the deformation parameter ε=ε_1+ε_2 the instanton partition function is identified with a conformal block of Liouville theory with the central charge c = 1+ 6ε^2/ε_1ε_2. If reversed, this observation means that the universal part of conformal blocks, which is the same for all two-dimensional conformal theories with non-degenerate Virasoro representations, possesses a non-trivial decomposition into sum over sets of the Young diagrams, different from the natural decomposition studied in conformal field theory. We provide some details about this intriguing new development in the simplest case of the four-point correlation functions.

Period Integrals, Quantum Numbers and Confinement in SUSY QCD

We present a direct computation of the period integrals on degenerate Seiberg-Witten curves for supersymmetric QCD, and show how these periods determine the changes in the quantum numbers of the states, when passing from the weak to the strong-coupling domains in the mass moduli space of the theory. The confinement of monopoles at strong coupling is discussed, and we demonstrate that the ambiguities in choosing the way in the moduli space do not influence to the physical conclusions on confinement of monopoles in the phase with the condensed light dyons.

First Order String Theory and the Kodaira-Spencer Equations. II

The first-order bosonic string theory, perturbed by primary operator, corresponding to the deformation of target-space complex structure is considered. We compute the correlation functions in this theory and study their divergencies. It is found, that consistency of these correlation functions with the world-sheet conformal invariance requires the Kodaira-Spencer equations to be satisfied by target-space Beltrami differentials. This statement is checked explicitly for the three-point and four-point correlators, containing one probe operator. We discuss the origin of these divergences and their relation with beta-functions or effective action and polyvertex structures in BRST approach.

Strong versus Weak Coupling Confinement in N=2 Supersymmetric QCD

We consider N=2 supersymmetric QCD with the gauge group SU(N_c)=SU(N+1) and N_f number of quark matter multiplets, being perturbed by a small mass term for the adjoint matter, so that its Coulomb branch shrinks to a number of isolated vacua. We discuss the vacuum where r=N quarks develop VEV's for N_f\geq 2N=2N_c-2 (in particular, we focus on the N_f= 2N and N_f= 2N+1 cases). In the equal quark mass limit at large masses this vacuum stays at weak coupling, the low-energy theory has U(N) gauge symmetry and one observes the non-Abelian confinement of monopoles. As we reduce the average quark mass and enter the strong coupling regime the quark condensate transforms into the condensate of dyons. We show that the low energy description in the strongly-coupled domain for the original theory is given by U(N) dual gauge theory of N_f\geq 2N light non-Abelian dyons, where the condensed dyons still cause the confinement of monopoles, and not of the quarks, as can be thought by naive duality.

Non Abelian gauge theories, prepotentials and Abelian differentials

I discuss particular solutions of the integrable systems, starting from well-known dispersionless KdV and Toda hierarchies, which define in most straightforward way the generating functions for the Gromov-Witten classes in terms of the rational complex curve. On the ``mirror'' side these generating functions can be identified with the simplest prepotentials of complex manifolds, and I present few more exactly calculable examples of them. For the higher genus curves, corresponding in this context to the non Abelian gauge theories via the topological gauge/string duality, similar solutions are constructed using extended basis of Abelian differentials, generally with extra singularities at the branching points of the curve.

Non-Abelian Vortices in N=1* Gauge Theory

We consider the N=1* supersymmetric SU(2) gauge theory and demonstrate that the Z_2 vortices in this theory acquire orientational zero modes, associated with the rotation of magnetic flux inside SU(2) group, and turn into the non-Abelian strings, when the masses of all chiral fields become equal. These non-Abelian strings are not BPS-saturated. We study the effective theory on the string world sheet and show that it is given by two-dimensional non-supersymmetric O(3) sigma model. The confined 't Hooft-Polyakov monopole is seen as a junction of the Z_2-string and anti-string, and as a kink in the effective world sheet sigma model. We calculate its mass and show that besides the four-dimensional confinement of monopoles, they are also confined in the two-dimensional theory: the monopoles stick to anti-monopoles to form the meson-like configurations on the strings they are attached to.

Quasiclassical Geometry and Integrability of AdS/CFT Correspondence

We discuss the quasiclassical geometry and integrable systems related to the gauge/string duality. The analysis of quasiclassical solutions to the Bethe anzatz equations arising in the context of the AdS/CFT correspondence is performed, compare to stationary phase equations for the matrix integrals. We demonstrate how the underlying geometry is related to the integrable sigma-models of dual string theory, and investigate some details of this correspondence.

Non-Abelian Confinement via Abelian Flux Tubes in Softly Broken N=2 SUSY QCD

We study confinement in softly broken N=2 SUSY QCD with gauge group SU(N_c) and N_f hypermultiplets of fundamental matter (quarks) when the Coulomb branch is lifted by small mass of adjoint matter. Concentrating mostly on the theory with SU(3) gauge group we discuss the N=1 vacua which arise in the weak coupling at large values of quark masses and study flux tubes and monopole confinement in these vacua. In particular we find the BPS strings in SU(3) gauge theory formed by two interacting U(1) gauge fields and two scalar fields generalizing ordinary Abrikosov-Nielsen-Olesen vortices. Then we focus on the SU(3) gauge theories with N_f=4 and N_f=5 flavors with equal masses. In these theories there are N=1 vacua with restored SU(2) gauge subgroup in quantum theory since SU(2) subsectors are not asymptotically free. We show that although the confinement in these theories is due to Abelian flux tubes the multiplicity of meson spectrum is the same as expected in a theory with non-Abelian confinement.

String Theory or Field Theory?

The status of string theory is reviewed, and major recent developments - especially those in going beyond perturbation theory in the string theory and quantum field theory frameworks - are discussed. This analysis helps better understand the role and place of string theory in the modern picture of the physical world. Even though quantum field theory describes a wide range of experimental phenomena, it is emphasized that there are some insurmountable problems inherent in it - notably the impossibility to formulate the quantum theory of gravity on its basis - which prevent it from being a fundamental physical theory of the world of microscopic distances. It is this task, the creation of such a theory, which string theory, currently far from completion, is expected to solve. In spite of its somewhat vague current form, string theory has already led to a number of serious results and greatly contributed to progress in the understanding of quantum field theory. It is these developments which are our concern in this review.

The Ruijsenaars-Schneider Model in the Context of Seiberg-Witten Theory

The compactification of five dimensional N=2 SUSY Yang-Mills (YM) theory onto a circle provides a four dimensional YM model with N=4 SUSY. This supersymmetry can be broken down to N=2 if non-trivial boundary conditions in the compact dimension, ϕ(x_5 +R) = e^{2πiε}ϕ(x_5), are imposed on half of the fields. This two-parameter (R,ε) family of compactifications includes as particular limits most of the previously studied four dimensional N=2 SUSY YM models with supermultiplets in the adjoint representation of the gauge group. The finite-dimensional integrable system associated to these theories via the Seiberg-Witten construction is the generic elliptic Ruijsenaars-Schneider model. In particular the perturbative (weak coupling) limit is described by the trigonometric Ruijsenaars-Schneider model.

RG Equations from Whitham Hierarchy

The second derivatives of prepotential with respect to Whitham time-variables in the Seiberg-Witten theory are expressed in terms of Riemann theta-functions. These formulas give a direct transcendental generalization of algebraic ones for the Kontsevich matrix model. In particular case they provide an explicit derivation of the renormalization group (RG) equation proposed recently in papers on the Donaldson theory.

More Evidence for the WDVV Equations in N=2 SUSY Yang-Mills Theories

We consider 4d and 5d N=2 supersymmetric theories and demonstrate that in general their Seiberg-Witten prepotentials satisfy the Witten-Dijkgraaf-Verlinde-Verlinde (WDVV) equations. General proof for the Yang-Mills models (with matter in the first fundamental representation) makes use of the hyperelliptic curves and underlying integrable systems. A wide class of examples is discussed, it contains few understandable exceptions. In particular, in perturbative regime of 5d theories in addition to naive field theory expectations some extra terms appear, like it happens in heterotic string models. We consider also the example of the Yang-Mills theory with matter hypermultiplet in the adjoint representation (related to the elliptic Calogero-Moser system) when the standard WDVV equations do not hold.

WDVV Equations from Algebra of Forms

A class of solutions to the WDVV equations is provided by period matrices of hyperelliptic Riemann surfaces, with or without punctures. The equations themselves reflect associativity of explicitly described multiplicative algebra of (possibly meromorphic) 1-differentials, which holds at least in the hyperelliptic case. This construction is direct generalization of the old one, involving the ring of polynomials factorized over an ideal, and is inspired by the study of the Seiberg-Witten theory. It has potential to be further extended to reveal algebraic structures underlying the theory of quantum cohomologies and the prepotentials in string models with N=2 supersymmetry.

Liouville Type Models in Group Theory Framework. I. Finite-Dimensional Algebras

In the series of papers we represent the ``Whittaker'' wave functional of $d+1$-dimensional Liouville model as a correlator in $d+0$-dimensional theory of the sine-Gordon type (for $d=0$ and $1$). Asypmtotics of this wave function is characterized by the Harish-Chandra function, which is shown to be a product of simple $Γ$-function factors over all positive roots of the corresponding algebras (finite-dimensional for $d=0$ and affine for $d=1$). This is in nice correspondence with the recent results on 2- and 3-point correlators in $1+1$ Liouville model, where emergence of peculiar double-periodicity is observed. The Whittaker wave functions of $d+1$-dimensional non-affine ("conformal") Toda type models are given by simple averages in the $d+0$ dimensional theories of the affine Toda type. This phenomenon is in obvious parallel with representation of the free-field wave functional, which is originally a Gaussian integral over interior of a $d+1$-dimensional disk with given boundary conditions, as a (non-local) quadratic integral over the $d$-dimensional boundary itself. In the present paper we mostly concentrate on the finite-dimensional case. The results for finite-dimensional "Iwasawa" Whittaker functions were known, and we present their survey. We also construct new "Gauss" Whittaker functions.

Non-perturbative Quantum Theories and Integrable Equations

I review the appearance of classical integrable systems as an effective tool for the description of non-perturbative exact results in quantum string and gauge theories. Various aspects of this relation: spectral curves, action-angle variables, Whitham deformations and associativity equations are considered separately demonstrating hidden parallels between topological 2d string theories and naively non-topological 4d theories. The proofs are supplemented by explicit illustrative examples.

Integrable structures in matrix models and physics of 2d-gravity

A review of the appearence of integrable structures in the matrix model description of $2d$-gravity is presented. Most of ideas are demonstrated at the technically simple but ideologically important examples. Matrix models are considered as a sort of "effective" description of continuum $2d$ field theory formulation. The main physical role in such description is played by the Virasoro-$W$ constraints which can be interpreted as a certain unitarity or factorization constraints. Bith discrete and continuum (Generalized Kontsevich) models are formulated as the solutions to those discrete (continuous) Virasoro-$W$ constraints. Their integrability properties are proven using mostly the determinant technique highly related to the representation in terms of free fields. The paper also contains some new observations connected to formulation of more general than GKM solutions and deeper understanding of their relation to $2d$ gravity.

On pq-duality and explicit solutions in $c \le 1$ $2d$ gravity models

We study the integral representation for the exact solution to nonperturbative $c le 1$ string theory. A generic solution is determined by two functions $W(x)$ and $Q(x)$ which behaive at infinity like $x^p$ and $x^q$ respectively. The integral model for arbitrary $(p,q)$ models is derived which explicitely demonstrates $p-q$ duality of minimal models coupled to gravity. We discuss also the exact solutions to string equation and reduction condition and present several explicit examples.

Landau-Ginzburg Topological Theories in the Framework of GKM and Equivalent Hierarchies

We consider the deformations of ``monomial solutions'' to Generalized Kontsevich Model \cite{KMMMZ91a,KMMMZ91b} and establish the relation between the flows generated by these deformations with those of $N=2$ Landau-Ginzburg topological theories. We prove that the partition function of a generic Generalized Kontsevich Model can be presented as a product of some ``quasiclassical'' factor and non-deformed partition function which depends only on the sum of Miwa transformed and flat times. This result is important for the restoration of explicit $p-q$ symmetry in the interpolation pattern between all the $(p,q)$-minimal string models with $c<1$ and for revealing its integrable structure in $p$-direction, determined by deformations of the potential. It also implies the way in which supersymmetric Landau-Ginzburg models are embedded into the general context of GKM. From the point of view of integrable theory these deformations present a particular case of what is called equivalent hierarchies.

Towards unified theory of $2d$ gravity

We introduce a new 1-matrix model with arbitrary potential and the matrix-valued background field. Its partition function is a $τ$-function of KP-hierarchy, subjected to a kind of ${\cal L}_{-1}$-constraint. Moreover, partition function behaves smoothly in the limit of infinitely large matrices. If the potential is equal to $X^{K+1}$, this partition function becomes a $τ$-function of $K$-reduced KP-hierarchy, obeying a set of ${\cal W} _K$-algebra constraints identical to those conjectured in \cite{FKN91} for double-scaling continuum limit of $(K-1)$-matrix model. In the case of $K=2$ the statement reduces to the early established \cite{MMM91b} relation between Kontsevich model and the ordinary $2d$ quantum gravity . Kontsevich model with generic potential may be considered as interpolation between all the models of $2d$ quantum gravity with $c<1$ preserving the property of integrability and the analogue of string equation.
