Antisite disorder and phase segregation in Mn$_{2}$NiSn

A systematic study of crystal structure, local structure, magnetic and transport properties in quenched and temper annealed Ni$_{2-x}$Mn$_{1+x}$Sn alloys indicate the formation of Mn$_3$Sn type structural defects caused by an antisite disorder between Mn and Sn occupying the Y and Z sublattices of X$_2$YZ Heusler structure. The antisite disorder is caused by the substitution of Ni by Mn at the X sites. On temper annealing, these defects segregate and phase separate into $L2_1$ Heusler and $D0_{19}$ Mn$_3$Sn type phases.

$d$ band filling and magnetic phase separation in transition metal-doped Mn$_3$SnC

The structural and magnetic properties of transition metal-doped Mn$_3$SnC are studied with an aim to understand the effect of transition metal atom on magnetostructural properties of the antiperovskite compound. The doped Mn$_{2.8}$T$_{0.2}$SnC (T = Cr, Fe, Co, Ni and Cu) compounds show a distinctly different magnetic behavior which can be related to electronic filling of the $d$ band of the transition metal atom. While Cr and Fe doped Mn$_3$SnC show properties similar to that of Mn$_3$SnC, the Co, Ni and Cu doped compounds exhibit nucleation of secondary phases which are devoid of carbon and having Heusler and DO19 type hexagonal structure. A strong magnetic interaction is observed between the impurity phases and the major antiperovskite phase leading to a sharp decrease in magnetostructural transition temperature of the antiperovskite phase and a cluster glassy ground state.

Modulations in magnetostructural coupling in C and Sn deficient Mn$_3$SnC

The structural and magnetic interactions in stoichiometric (Mn$_3$SnC), carbon deficient (Mn$_3$SnC$_{0.8}$) and tin deficient (Mn$_3$Sn$_{0.85}$C) antiperovskite compounds are studied using x-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy and neutron diffraction. The study confirms the presence of local structural distortions only around Mn atoms in the antiperovskite compounds irrespective of their stoichiometry. The distortions in the Mn$_6$C octahedra are such that only Mn atoms are displaced from their crystallographic positions resulting in long and short Mn-Mn bonds. These long and short Mn-Mn bonds are responsible for presence of ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic moments on Mn atoms. The C deficiency at the center of the octahedra increases the strain on the Mn$_6$C octahedra and results in a wide variation of Mn-Mn bond distances as a function of temperature and large hysteresis in magnetic properties. On the other hand, Sn deficiency tends to relax strain by giving more space for the octahedra to distort leading to temperature independent Mn-Mn bond distances.

The field cooled state of canonical spin-glass revisited

Canonical spin-glass (SG) is an enigmatic system in condensed matter physics. In spite of the intense activities of last five decades several questions regarding the nature of the SG phase transition and the SG ground state are yet to be resolved completely. In this backdrop we have revisited the field cooled state of canonical spin-glass. We have experimentally studied magnetic response in two canonical spin-glass systems AuMn(1.8%) and AgMn(1.1%), both in the field cooled (FC) as well as zero field cooled (ZFC) state. We show that the well known magnetic memory effect, which clearly established earlier the metastable nature of the ZFC state in SG, is also present in the FC state. The results of our experimental study indicate that the FC state also is a non-equilibrium state, and hence the energy landscape involved is a non-trivial one. This in turn seriously questions the picture of spin-glass transformation as a second order thermodynamic phase transition.

Possible glass-like random singlet magnetic state in 1T-TaS2

Two-dimensional layered transition-metal-dichalcogenide compound 1T-TaS2 shows the rare coexistence of charge density wave (CDW) and electron correlation driven Mott transition. In addition, atomic-cluster spins on the triangular lattice of the CDW state of 1T-TaS2 give rise to the possibility of the exotic spin-singlet state in which quantum fluctuations of spins are strong enough to prevent any long range magnetic ordering down to absolute zero ( 0 K). We present here the evidences of a glass-like random singlet magnetic state in 1T-TaS2 at low temperatures through a study of temperature and time dependence of magnetization. Comparing the experimental results with a representative canonical spin-glass system Au(1.8%Mn), we show that this glass-like state is distinctly different from the well established canonical spin-glass state.

A new spin gapless semiconductor: quaternary Heusler CoFeCrGa alloy

Despite a plethora of materials suggested for spintronic applications, a new class of materials has emerged, namely spin gapless semiconductors (SGS), that offers potentially more advantageous properties than existing ones. These magnetic semiconductors exhibit a finite band gap for one spin channel and a closed gap for the other. Here, supported by the first-principles, electronic-structure calculations, we report the first experimental evidence of SGS behavior in equiatomic quaternary CoFeCrGa, having a cubic Heusler (L21) structure but exhibiting chemical disorder (DO3 structure). CoFeCrGa is found to transform from SGS to half-metallic phase under pressure, which is attributed to unique electronic-structure features. The saturation magnetization (MS) obtained at 8 K agrees with the Slater-Pauling rule and the Curie temperature (TC) is found to exceed 400 K. Carrier concentration (up to 250 K) and electrical conductivity are observed to be nearly temperature independent, prerequisites for SGS. The anomalous Hall coefficient is estimated to be 185 S/cm at 5 K. Considering the SGS properties and high TC, this material appears to be promising for spintronic applications.

Effect of ball milling and post annealing on structural and magnetic properties in Ni50Mn36Fe2Sb12 Heusler alloy

The effect of ball milling on the structural, magnetic and exchange bias properties of Ni50Mn36Fe2Sb12 Heusler alloys was studied. The ball milled samples exhibited coexisting austenite and martensite phases at room temperature, while annealing supresses the austenite phase completely. Ball milling was found to reduce the grain size, which resulted in the weakening of the ferromagnetic properties. An exchange bias field of 111 Oe and coercivity of 826 Oe were observed at 5 K in the as-milled sample, in contrast to the bulk alloy values of 288 Oe and 292 Oe, respectively. Annealing causes an increase in the ferromagnetic ordering and a decrease in the interfacial exchange coupling, resulting in a decrease of both exchange bias and coercivity.

Effect of composition on magnetocaloric properties of Mn$ _{3} $Ga$ _{(1-x)} $Sn$ _{x} $C

A study investigating the effect of Sn substitution on the magnetocaloric properties of Mn$ _{3} $Ga$ _{(1-x)} $Sn$ _{x} $C compounds reveals that nature of the MCE has a strong dependence on the nature of the magnetic ordering. For small amounts of Sn ($ x\leq0.2 $) the MCE is of the inverse type wherein an increase in the applied field beyond 5T gives rise to a table like temperature dependence of the entropy due to a coupling between the first order FM - AFM transition and the field induced AFM - FM transition. Replacement of Ga by larger concentrations of Sn ($ x\geq0.71 $) $(ΔS_M)$ results in a change of the MCE to a conventional type with very little variation in the position of $(ΔS_M)_{max}$ with increasing magnetic field. This has been explained to be due to the local strain introduced by A site ions (Ga/Sn) which affect the magnetostructural coupling in these compounds.

Effect of local structural distortions on magnetostructural transformation in Mn$_3$SnC

In this paper we attempt to understand the different nature of first order magnetic transformation in Mn$_3$SnC as compared to that in Mn$_3$GaC. The transformation in Mn$_3$SnC is close to room temperature (T$_t \approx$ 280K) and is associated with a large change in magnetic entropy that makes it a suitable candidate for applications in ferroic cooling. Using a combination of x-ray and neutron diffraction and x-ray absorption fine structure (XAFS) spectroscopy we infer that the magnetic ground state consisting of antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic Mn atoms is due to structural distortions present in Mn$_6$C octahedra.

High spin polarization and large spin splitting in equiatomic quaternary CoFeCrAl Heusler alloy

In this paper, we investigate CoFeCrAl alloy by means of various experimental techniques and ab-initio calculations to look for half-metallic nature. The alloy is found to exist in the cubic Heusler structure, with presence of B2 ordering. Saturation magnetization (MS) value of about 2 Bohr magneton/f.u. is observed at 8 K under ambient pressure, which is in good agreement with the Slater-Pauling rule. MS values are found to be independent of pressure, which is a prerequisite for half-metals. The ab-initio electronic structure calculations predict half-metallic nature for the alloy with a spin slitting energy of 0.31 eV. Importantly, this system shows a high current spin polarization value of 0.67 [with error of 0.02], as deduced from the point contact Andreev reflection (PCAR) measurements. Linear dependence of electrical resistivity with temperature indicates the possibility of reasonably high spin polarization at elevated temperatures (~150 K) as well. All these suggest that CoFeCrAl is a promising material for the spintronic devices.

Co-existence of ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic interactions in Mn$_3$Ga$ _{(1-x)} $Sn$_x$C

The magnetic properties of the Mn$_3$Ga$_{(1-x)}$Sn$_x$C, 0 $\le$ x $\le$ 1 antiperovskite compounds have been investigated in detail. Though all compounds of this series crystallize in a cubic structure, the Ga rich (x $\le$ 0.2) compounds transform, via a first order transformation, to an antiferromagnetic ground state and the Sn rich (x $\ge$ 0.8) compounds exhibit dominant ferromagnetic interactions at low temperature. In the intermediate range (0.4 $\le$ x $\le$ 0.7) co-existence of ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic interactions can be seen. The results have been explained to be due to growth of ferromagnetic sub-lattice at the expense of antiferromagnetic sub-lattice with increasing Sn concentration in Mn$_3$Ga$_{(1-x)}$Sn$_x$C. This growth occurs to a point where the first-order transition is altered from a ferromagnetic - antiferromagnetic type in Ga rich compounds to a paramagnetic - ferrimagnetic type in Mn$_3$SnC.

Effect of carbon content on magnetostructural properties of Mn$_3$GaC

Effect of carbon content on magnetostructural transformation in antiperovskites of the type Mn$_3$GaC$_x$ ($x$ = 0.8, 1.0 and 1.05) has been investigated. It is found that, increase in carbon content changes the ground state from ferromagnetic metallic ($x$ = 0.8) to antiferromagnetic semiconducting ($x$ = 1.05) type. This has been attributed to localization of itinerant Mn $3d$ electrons due to increased Mn$3d$ - C$2p$ hybridization. Such a hybridization strengthens Mn-C-Mn antiferromagnetic interactions over Mn-Mn ferromagnetic interactions. Further, magnetic field can be used as a tool to modulate the relative strengths of these ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic interactions thereby affecting the nature and strength of magnetocaloric properties.

Effect of Zn doping on the Magneto-Caloric effect and Critical Constants of Mott Insulator MnV2O4

X-ray absorption near edge spectra (XANES) and magnetization of Zn doped MnV2O4 have been measured and from the magnetic measurement the critical exponents and magnetocaloric effect have been estimated. The XANES study indicates that Zn doping does not change the valence states in Mn and V. It has been shown that the obtained values of critical exponents \b{eta}, γ and δ do not belong to universal class and the values are in between the 3D Heisenberg model and the mean field interaction model. The magnetization data follow the scaling equation and collapse into two branches indicating that the calculated critical exponents and critical temperature are unambiguous and intrinsic to the system. All the samples show large magneto-caloric effect. The second peak in magneto-caloric curve of Mn0.95Zn0.05V2O4 is due to the strong coupling between orbital and spin degrees of freedom. But 10% Zn doping reduces the residual spins on the V-V pairs resulting the decrease of coupling between orbital and spin degrees of freedom.

Ferromagnetic interactions and martensitic transformation in Fe doped Ni-Mn-In shape memory alloys

The structure, magnetic and martensitic properties of Fe doped Ni-Mn-In magnetic shape memory alloys have been studied by differential scanning calorimetry, magnetization, resistivity, X-ray diffraction (XRD) and EXAFS. While Ni$_{2}$MnIn$_{1-x}$Fe$_{x}$ ($0 \le x \le 0.6$) alloys are ferromagnetic and non martensitic, the martensitic transformation temperature in Ni$_{2}$Mn$_{1.5} $In$_{1-y}$Fe$_{y}$ and Ni$_{2}$Mn$ _{1.6} $In$_{1-y}$Fe$_{y}$ increases for lower Fe concentrations ($y \le 0.05$) before decreasing sharply for higher Fe concentrations. XRD analysis reveals presence of cubic and tetragonal structural phases in Ni$_{2}$MnIn$_{1-x}$Fe$_{x}$ at room temperature with tetragonal phase content increasing with Fe doping. Even though the local structure around Mn and Ni in these Fe doped alloys is similar to martensitic Mn rich Ni-Mn-In alloys, presence of ferromagnetic interactions and structural disorder induced by Fe affect Mn-Ni-Mn antiferromagnetic interactions resulting in suppression of martensitic transformation in these Fe doped alloys.

High spin polarization in CoFeMnGe quaternary Heusler alloy

We report the structure, magnetic property and spin polarization of CoFeMnGe equiatomic quaternary Heusler alloy. The alloy was found to exist in the L21 structure with considerable amount of DO3 disorder. Thermal analysis result indicated the Curie temperature is about 711K without any other phase transformation up to melting temperature. The magnetization value was close to that predicted by the Slater-Pauling curve. Current spin polarization of P = 0.70 {plus/minus}0.1 was deduced using point contact Andreev reflection (PCAR) measurements. Half-metallic trend in the resistivity has also been observed in the temperature range of 5 K to 300 K. Considering the high spin polarization and Curie temperature, this material appears to be promising for spintronic applications.

Investigation of the quaternary Fe2-xCoxMnSi alloys by structural, magnetic, resistivity and spin polarization measurements

Effects of the Co substitution have been observed on the structural, magnetic and magneto-transport properties of Fe2-xCoxMnSi alloy. Curie temperature (TC) and saturation magnetization (MS) of these alloys increased linearly with the Co substitution. Competitive magnetic interaction between ferromagnetic (FM) and anti-ferromagnetic (AFM) phases exists in Fe2-xCoxMnSi for x less than 0.2, AFM phase is completely disappears for x greater than or equal to 0.2. The value of Rhodes-Wohlfarth ratio pc/ps is greater than one for these alloys which is the characteristics of iterant magnetism present in the system. Mössbauer spectroscopic measurements have been done to investigate the atomic disorder and local magnetic moment for some x values. Resistivity measurements also confirm the stability of ferromagnetism with the concentration of Co and also show a sign of half metallicity. Resistivity shows semiconducting behaviour for x = 0.4 which is interesting in view of spin gapless semiconductors.

Spin gapless semiconducting behavior in equiatomic quaternary CoFeMnSi Heusler alloy

Spin gapless semiconductors (SGS) form a new class of magnetic semiconductors, which has a band gap for one spin sub band and zero band gap for the other, and thus are useful for tunable spin transport based applications. In this paper, we report the first experimental evidence for spin gapless semiconducting behavior in CoFeMnSi Heusler alloy. Such a behavior is also confirmed by first principles band structure calculations. The most stable configuration obtained by the theoretical calculation is verified by experiment. The alloy is found to crystallize in the cubic Heusler structure (LiMgPdSn type) with some amount of disorder and has a saturation magnetization of 3.7 Bohr's magneton/f.u.. and Curie temperature of 620 K. The saturation magnetization is found to follow the Slater-Pauling behavior, one of the prerequisites for SGS. Nearly temperature-independent carrier concentration and electrical conductivity is observed from 5 to 300 K. An anomalous Hall coefficient of 162 S/cm is obtained at 5 K. Point contact Andreev reflection data has yielded the current spin polarization value of 0.64, which is found to be robust against the structural disorder. All these properties are quite promising for the spintronic applications such as spin injection and can bridge a gap between the contrasting behavior of half-metallic ferromagnets and semiconductors.

Effect of annealing on the magnetic, magnetocaloric and magnetoresistance properties of Ni-Co-Mn-Sb melt spun ribbons

The structural, magnetic, magnetocaloric and magnetotransport properties of Ni46Co4Mn38Sb12 melt spun ribbons have been systematically investigated. The partially ordered B2 phase of the as-spun ribbon transforms to fully ordered L21 phase upon annealing, which signifies a considerable change of the atomic ordering in the system. The presence of atomic disorder in the as-spun ribbon gives rise to a higher martensitic transition temperature and a lower magnetization as compared to the bulk sample. However, annealing the ribbons helps in regaining the bulk properties to a large extent. Significant changes in magnetocaloric effect, exchange bias and magnetoresistance have been observed between the as-spun and the annealed ribbons, indicating the role of atomic ordering on the functional as well as fundamental properties in the Heusler system. Importantly, the study shows that one can reduce the hysteresis loss by preparing melt spun alloys and subjecting them to appropriate annealing conditions, which enable them to become practical magnetic refrigerants.

Magnetic interactions in the Martensitic phase of Mn rich Ni-Mn-In shape memory alloys

The magnetic properties of Mn$_{2}$Ni$_{(1+x)}$In$_{(1-x)}$ ($x$ = 0.5, 0.6, 0.7) and Mn$_{(2-y)}$Ni$_{(1.6+y)}$In$_{0.4}$ ($y$ = -0.08, -0.04, 0.04, 0.08) shape memory alloys have been studied. Magnetic interactions in the martensitic phase of these alloys are found to be quite similar to those in Ni$_2$Mn$_{(1+x)}$In$_{(1-x)}$ type alloys. Doping of Ni for In not only induces martensitic instability in Mn$_2$NiIn type alloys but also affects magnetic properties due to a site occupancy disorder. Excess Ni preferentially occupies X sites forcing Mn to the Z sites of X$_2$YZ Heusler composition resulting in a transition from ferromagnetic ground state to a state dominated by ferromagnetic Mn(Y) - Mn(Y) and antiferromagnetic Mn(Y)-Mn(Z) interactions. These changes in magnetic ground state manifest themselves in observation of exchange bias effect even in zero field cooled condition and virgin magnetization curve lying outside the hysteresis loop.

Magnetic, magnetocaloric and transport properties of HoRuSi compound

Magnetic, thermal, magnetocaloric and transport properties of polycrystalline HoRuSi have been studied. It was found that the compound shows magnetic transitions at T1=18 K and T2=8 K. Magnetization data reveal that the ferromagnetic ordering is dominant in this compound. Magnetocaloric effect has been estimated from M-H-T data and the -ΔSM has been found to be 12.8 J/kg K for field of 50 kOe, which is comparable to some potential refrigerant materials in same temperature regime.

Magnetocaloric effect and its implementation in critical behavior study of Mn4FeGe3-xSix intermetallic compounds

Magnetocaloric effect in Mn4FeGe3-xSix compounds has been studied by dc magnetization measurements. For the parent compound Mn4FeGe3, the paramagnetic to ferromagnetic transition temperature TC is above room temperature (320 K), which initially remains constant for small Si substitution at the Ge site and then decreases marginally with an increase in Si concentration. A large change in magnetic entropy at the TC, under a magnetic field variation of 50 kOe, with typical values of 5.9, 6.5, 5.9 and 4.4 J kg-1 K-1 for x = 0, 0.2, 0.6, and 1 samples, respectively, along with a broad operating temperature range and a negligible hysteresis make Mn4FeGe3-xSix series a promising candidate for magnetic refrigerant material around room temperature. Mn4FeGe3-xSix series is found to undergo a second-order magnetic phase transition. The field dependence of the magnetic entropy change has been brought out and implemented it to deduce the critical exponents. The critical behavior study shows that the magnetic interactions for x = 0 and 0.2 samples have two different behaviors below and above TC. Below TC, it follows the mean field theory with long-range magnetic interaction and above TC it follows the Heisenberg three-dimensional model with short-range or local magnetic interaction. The magnetic exchange interactions for the x = 0.6 and 1 samples follow the mean-field theory.

Superconductivity in a low carrier density system: A single crystal study of cubic Y$_3$Ru$_4$Ge$_{13}$

We have successfully grown the single crystal of a low carrier density system Y$_3$Ru$_4$Ge$_{13}$ which crystallizes in the cubic crystal structure with the space group Pm3n. Y$_3$Ru$_4$Ge$_{13}$ exhibits super conductivity below 2.85 K as determined from the electrical resistivity, magnetic susceptibility and heat capacity measurements. The bulk measurements indicate multiband superconductivity in this low carrier system. Hall effect measurements show that the Hall coefficient R$_H$ is positive and it decreases rapidly with temperature which is highly unusual. The simple estimation of the carrier concentration gives a value (\sim 10$^{20}$/cm$^3$) which is 2-3 orders of magnitude lower than that of a conventional metal like Cu which seems to suggest that Y$_3$Ru$_4$Ge$_{13}$ is a semimetal that display multiband superconductivity.

Anomalous magnetic, transport and thermal properties of Gd5Ge3

We have studied the magnetic, thermal and magnetotransport properties of polycrystalline Gd5Ge3. It is found that the compound is a strong antiferromagnet and does not undergo any strong metamagnetic transition even in a field of 90 kOe. However, a small but visible ferromagnetic component is found to coexist with the antiferromagnetic order at low temperatures, as revealed by the anomalies in magnetization, magnetoresistance and heat capacity data. Our data suggest that the ferromagnetic component is of magnetostructural in origin, as evidenced by the strong field induced irreversibility of the magnetoresistance and heat capacity isotherms. The first order like magnetostructural distortion established in this material is found to result in a martensitic like scenario wherein the kinetic arrest controls the field/temperature dependence of physical properties such as heat capacity and magnetoresistance.

Anomalous magnetoresistance and magnetocaloric properties of NdRu2Ge2

It is found that the polycrystalline NdRu2Ge2 undergoes two successive magnetic transitions at Tt=10 K and TN=19 K. Evidence of metamagnetic transition is detected in the magnetization isotherm data in the antiferromagnetic regime. Temperature dependence of magnetoresistance (MR) show that the relative magnitudes of MR at TN and Tt change considerably as the field is increased from 10 kOe to 30 kOe. Moreover, the MR is found to be positive below 9 K for 30 kOe field although the material is ferromagnetic at these temperatures. The highest value of negative MR near TN is about 42% in a field of 30 kOe, while the positive MR is about 35 % at 3 K in a field of 50 kOe. Like MR, the magnetocaloric effect at TN and Tt also shows anomalous behavior. The relative magnitudes of MCE at these temperatures are found to change with increase in field. It appears that the high field (>10 kOe) magnetic state below TN is complex, giving rise to some antiferromagnetic-like fluctuations, affecting the MR and MCE behavior.

Structural, magnetic, magnetocaloric and magneto-transport properties in Ge doped Ni-Mn-Sb Heusler Alloys

The effect of Ge substitution on the magnetic, magnetocaloric and transport properties of Ni45Co5Mn38Sb12-xGex (x=0-3) has been investigated. The decrease in the exchange interaction brought by Ge substitution can be seen from the reduction in the magnetization of austenite phase and the increase in the martensitic transition temperature. Large magnetocaloric effect and magnetoresistance have been observed at room temperature, making it a potential material system for various applications.

Superconducting Properties of adipic acid doped Bulk MgB2 Superconductor

We report the effect of adipic acid (C6H10O4) doping on lattice parameters, microstructure, critical temperature (Tc), current density (Jc), and irreversibility field (Hirr) for MgB2 superconductor. Actual carbon (C) substitution level for boron (B) is estimated to be from 0.40 percent to 2.95 percent for different doping levels. A reduction in Tc from 38.43 to 34.93 K and in lattice parameter a from 3.084(3) A to 3.075(6) Ais observed for the10 wt percent C6H10O4 doped sample in comparison to pristine MgB2. This is an indication of C substitution at boron sites, with the C coming from the decomposition of C6H10O4 at the time of reaction. Interestingly the doped samples have resulted in significant enhancement of Jc and Hirr. All the doped samples exhibit the Jc value of the order of 10^4 A/cm2 at 5 K and 8 T, which is higher by an order of magnitude as compared to undoped sample. This result indicates that C6H10O4 is a promising material for MgB2 for obtaining the excellent Jc values under higher magnetic fields.

Effect of Fe substitution on the magnetic, transport, thermal and magnetocaloric properties in Ni50Mn38-xFexSb12 Heusler alloys

The structural, magnetic, transport, thermal and magnetothermal properties of quaternary Heusler alloys Ni50Mn38-xFexSb12 have been studied. Powder x-ray diffraction and temperature dependence of magnetization studies reveal that with addition of Fe in Mn site, the martensitic transition shifts to lower temperatures. It is also found that the martensitic transition becomes broader for the higher Fe concentrations. The metamagnetic transition in M(H) isotherms becomes very prominent in x=2 and vanishes for x=3 and 4. A maximum positive magnetic entropy change of 14.2 J/kg K is observed for x=2 at 288 K for 50 kOe. Resistivity shows an abrupt decrease across the martensitic transition in all the alloys, except x=6, which does not have the martensitic transition. Maximum negative magnetoresistance of 21% has been obtained for x=2 at 50 kOe. The same alloy also shows an exchange bias field of 288 Oe.

Influence of B - site Disorder in $La_{0.5}Ca_{0.5}Mn_{1-x}B_{x}O_{3}$ (B = Fe, Ru, Al and Ga) Manganites

We have investigated the influence of B - site doping on the crystal and magnetic structure in $La_{0.5}Ca_{0.5}Mn_{1-x}B_{x}O_{3}$ (B= Fe, Ru, Al and Ga) compounds using neutron diffraction, SANS, magnetization and resistivity techniques. The B - site doped samples are isostructural and possess an orthorhombic structure in \textit{Pnma} space group at 300K. A structural transition from orthorhombic to monoclinic is found to precede the magnetic transition to CE - type antiferromagnetic state in few of these samples. On doping with Fe, charge and orbitally ordered CE - type antiferromagnetic state is suppressed, followed by the growth in ferromagnetic insulating phase in $0.02\leq x\leq0.06$ compounds. At higher Fe doping in $x>0.06$, the ferromagnetic state is also suppressed and no evidence of long range magnetic ordering is observed. In Ru doped samples $(0.01\leq x\leq0.05)$, the ferromagnetic metallic state is favored at $T{}_{C}\approx200K$ and $T_{MI}\approx125K$ and no significant change in $T_{C}$ and $T_{MI}$ as a function of Ru doping is found. In contrast, with non magnetic Al substitution for $0.01\leq x\leq0.03$, the charge ordered CE - type antiferromagnetic state coexists with the ferromagnetic metallic phase. With further increase in Al doping $(0.05\leq x\leq0.07)$, both CE - type antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic phases are gradually suppressed. This behavior is accompanied by the evolution of A - type antiferromagnetic insulating state. Eventually, at higher Al doping $(0.10\leq x\leq0.13)$, this phase is also suppressed and signature of spin glass like transition are evident in M(T). Likewise, substitution with Ga is observed to induce similar effects as described for Al doped samples. The presence of short ranged ferromagnetic ordering has been further explored using SANS measurements in few of the selected samples.

Role of Ni-Mn hybridization in magnetism of martensitic state of Ni-Mn-In shape memory alloys

Extended X-ray Absorption Fine Structure (EXAFS) studies on Ni$_{50}$Mn$_{25+x}$In$_{25-x}$ have been carried out at Ni and Mn K edge as a function of temperature. Thermal evolution of nearest neighbor Ni-Mn and Mn-Mn bond distances in the martensitic phase give a clear evidence of a close relation between structural and magnetic degrees of freedom in these alloys. In particular, the study highlights the role of Ni 3d - Mn 3d hybridization in the magnetism of martensitic phase of these alloys.

Signature effects of spin clustering and distribution of spin couplings on magnetization behaviour in Ni-Fe-Mo and Ni-Fe-W alloys

The spontaneous magnetization as a function of temperature is investigated for a number of disordered Ni-Fe-Mo and Ni-Fe-W alloys using superconducting quantum interference device magnetometry, with a focus on the low-T behavior as well as the critical exponents associated with the magnetic phase transition. While the low-T magnetization is found to be well described by Bloch's T^{3/2} law, an extraordinary enhancement of the spin-wave parameter B and the reduced coefficient B_{3/2}=BT_C ^{3/2} are observed with increasing Fe dilution as compared to conventional 3d ferromagnets, whereas the critical amplitudes are found to decrease systematically. Recent locally self-consistent calculations of finite-temperature spin dynamics in a generic diluted magnet provide an understanding in terms of two distinct energy scales associated with weakly coupled bulk spins in the FM matrix and strongly coupled cluster spins. In view of similar behaviour observed in diluted magnetic semiconductors and other ferromagnetic alloys, it is proposed that these distinctive features corresponding to the three important temperature regimes provide macroscopic indicators of signature effects of spin clustering on magnetization behaviour in disordered ferromagnets.

Disorder Induced Negative Magnetization in LaSrCoRuO6

This paper reports effect of thermally induced disorder on the magnetic properties of LaSrCoRuO6 double perovskite. While the ordered sample is antiferromagnetic, the disordered sample exhibits negative values of magnetization measured in low applied fields. Isothermal magnetization on this sample shows hysteresis due to presence of ferromagnetic interactions. Based on neutron diffraction and X-ray Absorption Fine Structure (XAFS) studies, these results have been interpreted to be due disorder in site occupancy of Co and Ru leading to octahedral distortions and formation of Ru-O-Ru ferromagnetic linkages. Below 150K these ferromagnetic Ru spins polarize the Co spins in a direction opposite to that of the applied field resulting in observed negative magnetization.

Effect of B-site Dopants on Magnetic and Transport Properties of LaSrCoRuO$_6$

Effect of Co, Ru and Cu substitution at B and B' sites on the magnetic and transport properties of LaSrCoRuO$_6$ have been investigated. All the doped compositions crystallize in the monoclinic structure in the space group $P2_1/n$ indicating a double perovskite structure. While the magnetization and conductivity increase in Co and Ru doped compounds, antiferromagnetism is seen to strengthen in the Cu doped samples. These results are explained on the basis of a competition between linear Co-O-Ru-O-Co and perpendicular Co-O-O-Co antiferromagnetic interactions and due to formation of Ru-O-Ru ferromagnetic networks.

Effect of Si and Ga substitutions on the magnetocaloric properties of NiCoMnSb quaternary Heusler alloys

The effect of Si and Ga substitutions on the magnetic and the magnetocaloric properties in Heusler based system Ni46Co4Mn38Sb12-xZx (Z=Si and Ga) has been studied. From the M(T) plots it is found that Si substitution stabilizes the austenite phase, whereas, Ga substitution stabilizes the martensite phase. Strong metamagnetic behaviour is observed in the M(H) isotherms for Si=0.75 and 1, whereas, such a behaviour is absent in the Ga substituted alloys. Associated with magneto-structural transition, large MCE of 58 J/kg K and 70 J/kg K is observed for x=0.75 and 1, respectively in the case of Si. Though the MCE observed in x=0.5 and 1 in the case of Ga is much lower, the MCE peak is found to be quite broad.

Field induced changes across magnetic compensation in Pr(1-x)Gd(x)Al(2) alloys

The magnetic compensation phenomenon has been explored in the Pr(1-x)Gd(x)Al(2) series. The contributions from Pr and Gd moments compensate each other at a specific temperature in the ordered state (below (T(c)). At high fields, the magnetic reorientation (with respect to the external field direction) of the Pr and Gd moments appears as a minimum in the thermomagnetic response. We demonstrate several interesting attributes related with the magnetic reorienation phenomenon, viz., oscillatory behavior of the magneto-resistance, sign change of the anamalous Hall resistivity, fingerprints of field induced changes in the specific heat and ac-susceptibility data.

Magnetic and the magnetocaloric properties of Ce1-xRxFe2 and Ce(Fe1-xMx)2 compounds

We have studied selected rare earth doped and transition metal doped CeFe2 compounds by examining their structural, magnetic and magneto-thermal properties. With substitution of Ce by 5 and 10% Gd and 10% Ho, the Curie temperature can be tuned to the range of 267-318 K. Localization of Ce 4f electronic state with rare earth substitutions is attributed for the enhancement of Curie temperature. On the other hand, with Ga and Al substitution at the Fe site, system undergoes paramagnetic to ferromagnetic transition and then to an antiferromagnetic phase on cooling. The magnetocaloric effect across the transitions has been studied from both magnetization isotherms and heat capacity data. It is shown that by choosing the appropriate dopant and its concentration, the magnetocaloric effect around room temperature can be tuned.

Magnetic, magnetocaloric and neutron diffraction studies on TbNi5-xMx (M = Co and Fe) compounds

The effect of substitution of Co and Fe for Ni in TbNi5 on the structural, magnetic and magneto-thermal properties has been investigated. Considerable enhancement of Curie temperature is observed with Fe substitution, whereas the increase is nominal in the case of Co. Neutron diffraction measurements reveal the redistribution of moments and site preference of substitutional ions in Ni 2c and 3g sites. In TbNi4Fe, both Ni and Fe as well as Tb are found to carry moment while in the case of TbNi4Co, mainly Tb carries the moment. Magnetocaloric behavior has been investigated from the magnetization and the heat capacity measurements. The magnetic and magnetocaloric properties are found to be strongly correlated in these compounds.

Magnetization jumps and relaxation effect in doped CeFe2

For the first time, we find that the dynamic antiferromagnetic phase present in CeFe2 gets stabilized with Ga and Si substitutions. We find that phenomena such as strain-induced first order jumps in the magnetization curves, asymmetry between the M-H curves during the increasing and decreasing field cycles, the envelope curve being inside the virgin curve, occur in these compounds. Temperature and time dependences of magnetization show that the compounds possess glassy behavior at low temperatures. Multi-step magnetization behavior, unusual relaxation effect, thermal and magnetic history dependence, which are signatures of the martensitic scenario due to the strong magneto-structural coupling, are found to be present in this system. We also show that one can induce the magnetization steps with the help of appropriate measurement protocol. Detailed magnetization relaxation studies have been carried out to understand the dynamics of magnetic phase transition.

Magnetostructural transition in Ce(Fe0.975Ga0.025)2 compound

The magnetic and magnetostructural properties of the polycrystalline Ce(Fe0.975Ga0.025)2 have been investigated as a function of temperature and magnetic field. In Ce(Fe0.975Ga0.025)2 the magnetic transition from antiferromagnetic (AFM) to ferromagnetic state (FM) is accompanied by a structural transformation from rhombohedral to cubic structure. Phase coexistence is present during both the temperature and field driven transformations from the AFM to FM phase.

Metastable magnetization behavior in magnetocaloric R6Co1.67Si3 (R=Tb and Nd) compounds

Magnetic field and time induced steps have been observed in the recently discovered ternary silicide R6Co1.67Si3. Huge relaxation steps are observed across different loops in the low temperature magnetization isotherms. Giant relaxation present in this system indicates the existence of incubation time to get the saturated moment at a certain field. Measurement protocol sensitive magnetization behavior observed in this system may arise from the strong magnetostructural coupling and/or magnetic frustration. Electrical resistivity and magnetoresistance also reflect the magnetic state of the compound. Magnetocaloric effect is found to be large at temperatures close to the magnetic transition temperature.

Observation of re-entrant spin glass behavior in (Ce1-xErx)Fe2 compounds

Clear experimental evidence of re-entrant spin glass state has been revealed in Er doped CeFe2 compounds. The zero field cooled - field cooled bifurcation in dc magnetization, frequency dependence of freezing temperature, relaxation in zero field cooled magnetization and presence of large remanence confirm the spin glass state in these compounds. Frequency dependence is found to follow the critical slowing down mechanism. The random substitution of Er and the change in the valence state of Ce along with an enhancement of the ferromagnetic component in the Fe sublattice seem to be responsible for the spin glass state. Using detailed experimental protocols, we also prove that the low temperature state in these compounds is not a magnetic glass. The absence of exchange bias gives an indication that there is no coexistence of ferromagnetism and spin glass state in these compounds. The RSG state is found to be associated with the randomly magnetized clusters instead of atomic level randomness.

Observation of spontaneous magnetization jump and field-induced irreversibility in Nd5Ge3

We report the observation of spontaneous and ultra-sharp jumps in the low temperature magnetization isotherms of polycrystalline Nd5Ge3. Field-induced and ultra-sharp jumps are also seen in resistivity and heat capacity data. These jumps are accompanied by field-induced irreversibilities. The consistency seen in these three data clearly shows that the spin, electronic and lattice states are strongly coupled. Time-induced growth of the ferromagnetic phase is observed at a constant field and temperature, implying the metastability of the magnetic phase in the low field region. Various experimental findings point towards a strong field-induced magneto-structural irreversibility in this compound.

On the question of metallicity and ferromagnetism in charge ordered insulating Nd0.5Sr0.5MnO3 nanoparticles

The fascinating phenomenon of destabilization of charge/orbital order in Nd0.5Sr0.5MnO3 with the reduction of grain size is critically investigated. Based on our magnetic and transport experiments followed by a theoretical analysis, we analyze various possible mechanisms and try to delineate a universal scenario behind this phenomenon. We, revisit this issue and discuss the overwhelming evidence from experiments on nano and bulk manganites as well as the absence of correlation between size reduction and pressure effects on manganites. We propose a phenomenological understanding on the basis of enhanced surface disorder to explain the appearance of weak ferromagnetism and metallicity in nanoparticles of Nd0.5Sr0.5MnO3. We also provide supportive evidence from an ab-initio electron structure calculation and a recent numerical simulation and argue that the mechanism is universal in all nanosize charge ordered manganites.

Stabilization of antiferromagnetism in CeFe2 alloys: Effects of chemical and hydrostatic pressure

Effects of Al, Mn and Sb dopings in CeFe2 and effect of applied pressure have been investigated. Al doping gives rise to the FM-AFM transition and a reduction in the magnetic moment and TC values, clearly indicating the growth of the AFM component. Mn and Sb dopings only cause a reduction in TC value. It is found that in general external pressure enhances the antiferromagnetism in both the pure and the doped alloys. Enhancement of the Ce 4f- Fe 3d hybridization as a result of dopings and with the external pressure may be the reason for the stabilization of antiferromagnetism in these alloys.

Structure, Transport and Magnetic properties in La$_{2x}$Sr$_{2-2x}$Co$_{2x}$Ru$_{2-2x}$O$_{6}$

The perovskite solid solutions of the type La$_{2x}$Sr$_{2-2x}$Co$_{2x}$Ru$_{2-2x}$O$_{6}$ with 0.25 $\leq$ x $ \leq $ 0.75 have been investigated for their structural, magnetic and transport properties. All the compounds crystallize in double perovskite structure. The magnetization measurements indicate a complex magnetic ground state with strong competition between ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic interactions. Resistivity of the compounds is in confirmation with hopping conduction behaviour though differences are noted especially for $x$ = 0.4 and 0.6. Most importantly, low field (50Oe) magnetization measurements display negative magnetization during the zero field cooled cycle. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy measurements indicate presence of Co$^{2+}$/Co$^{3+}$ and Ru$^{4+}$/Ru$^{5+}$ redox couples in all compositions except $x$ = 0.5. Presence of magnetic ions like Ru$^{4+}$ and Co$^{3+}$ gives rise to additional ferromagnetic (Ru-rich) and antiferromagnetic sublattices and also explains the observed negative magnetization.

Supression of electron correlations in the superconducting alloys of Rh$_{17-x}$Ir$_x$S$_{15}$

We have studied the effect of Iridium doping (Rh$_{17-x}$Ir$_{x}$S$_{15}$) in the Rhodium sites of the strongly correlated superconductor Rh$_{17}$S$_{15}$. Even at low levels of doping (x = 1 and 2) we see a drastic change in the superconducting properties as compared to those of the undoped system. We deduce that there is a reduction in the density of states at the Fermi level from reduced Pauli susceptibility and Sommerfeld coefficient in the doped samples. Moreover, the second magnetization peak in the isothermal magnetization scan (`fishtail') which was very prominent in the magnetization data of the undoped crystal is suppressed in the doped samples. The temperature dependence of resistivity of the doped crystals show a remarkably different behavior from that of the undoped crystal with the appearance of a minima at lower temperatures, the position of which is fairly constant at different fields. Our data supports the notion that Iridium, which is a bigger atom than Rhodium expands the lattice thereby, reduces the electron correlations that existed due to the interaction between closer lying Rhodium atoms in the undoped system.

Temperature and magnetic field induced structural transformation in Si doped CeFe2: in-field x-ray diffraction study

Using x-ray powder diffraction technique at various temperatures and applied magnetic fields, we have studied the magnetostructural properties of Ce(Fe0.95Si0.05)2. The x-ray diffraction data establish quantitative relationships between bulk magnetization and the evolution of structurally distinct phases with magnetic field and temperature, and confirm the distinct features of first order phase transition like supercooling and superheating, metastability, and phase co-existence of different structural polymorphs. We observe the lattice volume mismatch across the structural phase transition, which appears to be the cause for the step behavior of the magnetization isotherms at low temperatures. The present study shows that the lattice distortion has to be treated explicitly, like spin, along with the effects of lattice-spin coupling to account for the magnetization behavior of this system. This structure template can resolve the issue of kinetics in this material as observed in different time scale measurements and with different experimental protocols.

Magnetic and electrical properties of RCo2Mn (R=Ho, Er) compounds

The RCo2Mn (R= Ho and Er) alloys, crystallizing in the cubic MgCu2-type structure, are isostructural to RCo2 compounds. The excess Mn occupies both the R and the Co atomic positions. Magnetic, electrical and heat capacity measurements have been done in these comounds. The Curie temperature is found to be 248 K and 222 K for HoCo2Mn and ErCo2Mn respectively, which are considerably higher than that of the corresponding RCo2 compounds. Saturation magnetization values calculated in these samples are less compared to that of the corresponding RCo2 compounds. Heat capacity data have been fitted with the nonmagnetic contribution with Debye temperature =250 K and electronic coefficient=26 mJ mol^-1K^-2.

Magnetocrystalline anisotropy in RAu_{2}Ge_{2} (R = La, Ce and Pr) single crystals

Anisotropic magnetic properties of single crystalline RAu_{2}Ge_{2} (R = La, Ce and Pr) compounds are reported. LaAu_{2}Ge_{2} exhibit a Pauli-paramagnetic behavior whereas CeAu_{2}Ge_{2} and PrAu_{2}Ge_{2} show an antiferromagnetic ordering with N\grave{e}el temperatures T_{N} = 13.5 and 9 K, respectively. The anisotropic magnetic response of Ce and Pr compounds establishes [001] as the easy axis of magnetization and a sharp spin-flip type metamagnetic transition is observed in the magnetic isotherms. The resistance and magnetoresistance behavior of these compounds, in particular LaAu_{2}Ge_{2}, indicate an anisotropic Fermi surface. The magnetoresistivity of CeAu_{2}Ge_{2} apparently reveals the presence of a residual Kondo interaction. A crystal electric field analysis of the anisotropic susceptibility in conjunction with the experimentally inferred Schottky heat capacity enables us to propose a crystal electric field level scheme for Ce and Pr compounds. For CeAu_{2}Ge_{2} our values are in excellent agreement with the previous reports on neutron diffraction. The heat capacity data in LaAu_{2}Ge_{2} show clearly the existence of Einstein contribution to the heat capacity.

Thermal and Transport Behavior of Single Crystalline R2CoGa8 (R = Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho, Er, Tm, Lu and Y) Compounds

The anisotropy in electrical transport and thermal behavior of single crystalline R$_{2}$CoGa$_{8}$ series of compounds is presented. These compounds crystallize in a tetragonal structure with space gropup P4/mmm. The nonmagnetic counterparts of the series namely Y$_{2}$CoGa$_{8}$ and Lu$_{2}$CoGa$_{8}$show a behavior consistent with the low density of states at the fermi level. In Y$_{2}$CoGa$_{8}$, a possibility of charge density wave transition is observed at $\approx$ 30 K. Gd$_{2}$CoGa$_{8}$ and Er$_{2}$CoGa$_{8}$ show a presence of short range correlation above the magnetic ordering temperature of the compound. In case of Gd$_{2}$CoGa$_{8}$, the magnetoresistance exhibits a significant anisotropy for current parallel to {[}100{]} and {[}001{]} directions. Compounds with other magnetic rare earths (R = Tb, Dy, Ho and Tm) show the normal expected magnetic behavior whereas Dy$_{2}$CoGa$_{8}$ exhibits the possibility of charge density wave (CDW) transition at approximately same temperature as that of Y$_{2}$CoGa$_{8}$. The thermal property of these compounds is analysed on the basis of crystalline electric field (CEF) calculations.

Magnetism in Gallium doped CeFe_2: The martensitic scenario

Ce(Fe_{1-x}Ga_x)_2 compounds with x = 0, 0.01, 0.025 and 0.05 have been investigated to unravel the effect of Ga on the magnetic state of CeFe_2. For the first time, we find that the dynamic antiferromagnetic phase present in CeFe_2 gets stabilized with Ga substitution. The hysteresis loops show that while the compounds with x = 0 and 0.01 show normal behavior, the other two show multiple magnetization steps across the antiferromagnetic-ferromagnetic transition region. The virgin curve is found to lie outside the envelope curve in these two compounds, similar to the observations made in Ru and Re substituted CeFe_2 compounds. Temperature, sweep rate and time dependences of the magnetization show that the compounds with x >=0.025 possess glassy behavior at low temperatures. Various results obtained reveal that these two compounds belong to the martensite family.

Sign reversal in the exchange bias and the collapse of hysteresis width across the magnetic compensation temperature in a single crystal of Nd0.75Ho0.25Al2

In the admixed Nd0.75Ho0.25Al2 system, magnetic moments of Nd and Ho occupying the same crystallographic site are antiferromagnetically coupled and the chosen stoichiometry displays a magnetic compensation behavior (Tcomp of about 24 K) in all orientations. In the vicinity of Tcomp, the conduction electron polarization (CEP) assumes the role of a soft ferromagnet exchange coupled to a pseudo-antiferromagnet comprising Nd/Ho moments, resulting in an asymmetry in the hysteretic (M-H) loop, i.e., the notion of an exchange bias field (Hexch). Across Tcomp, the CEP contribution reverses sign, and in consonance, the asymmetry in the M-H loop also undergoes a phase reversal. Interestingly, the width of the M-H loop shows a divergence, followed by a collapse on approaching Tcomp from either end. The observed behavior confirms a long standing prediction based on a phenomenological model for ferrimagnetic systems. The field induced changes across Tcomp leave an imprint of a quasi-phase transition in the heat capacity data. Magneto-resistance (ΔR / R vs T) has an oscillatory response, in which the changes across Tc and Tcomp can be recognized.

Effect of Ge substitution for Si on the anomalous magnetocaloric and magnetoresistance properties of GdMn2Si2 compounds

The effect of Ge substitution on the magnetization, heat capacity, magnetocaloric effect and magnetoresistance of GdMn2Si2-xGex (x=0, 1, and 2) compounds has been studied. The magnetic transition associated with the Gd ordering is found to change from second order to first order on Ge substitution. Magnetic contributions to the total heat capacity and the entropy have been estimated. Magnetocaloric effect has been calculated in terms of adiabatic temperature change (deltaTad) as well as isothermal magnetic entropy change (deltaSM) using the heat capacity data. The temperature dependence of the magnetocaloric effect in all the three compounds have shown broad peaks. The maximum values of deltaSM and deltaTad for GdMn2Ge2 are found to be 5.9 J/kgK and 1.2 K, respectively. The magnetoresistance is found to be very large and positive with a maximum value of about 22% in the case of GdMn2Ge2. In the other two compounds also, the magnetoresistance is predominantly positive, except in the vicinity of the Gd ordering temperature. The anomalous nature of the magnetocaloric effect and the magnetoresistance has been attributed to the canted magnetic structure of these compounds.

Measurement of pressure effects on the magnetic and the magnetocaloric properties of the intermetallic compounds R(Co1-xSix)2 [R=Dy and Er]

The effect of external pressure on the magnetic properties and magnetocaloric effect of R(Co1-xSix)2 [R= Er, Dy and x=0, 0.025 and 0.05] compounds has been studied. The ordering temperatures of both the parent as well as the Si substituted compounds are found to decrease with pressure. In all the compounds, the critical field for metamagnetic transition increases with pressure. It is seen that the magnetocaloric effect in the parent compounds is almost insensitive to pressure, while there is considerable enhancement in the case of Si substituted compounds. Spin fluctuations arising due to the magnetovolume effect play a crucial role in determining the pressure dependence of magnetocaloric effect in these compounds. Analysis of the magnetization data using the Landau theory has shown that the magnitude of the Landau coefficient (C3) decreases with Si concentration whereas it is found to increase with pressure. The isothermal magnetic entropy change is found to behave in the same manner as C3, both with Si concentration (at ambient pressure) as well as with the applied pressure.
