Enhanced thermo-mechanical properties of 212 MAX phase borides Zr2AB2 (A = In, Tl): an ab-initio understanding

The discovery of MAX phase borides has added a new dimension for research in the materials science community. In this paper, a first-principles study of the newly known MAX phase borides Zr2AB2 (A = In, Tl) has been carried out. The estimated lattice constants and volumes of the unit cell are found to be consistent with previous study. The dynamical and mechanical stability of the titled compounds have been checked. Fundamental insights into the stiffness constants, elastic moduli, hardness parameters, brittleness and anisotropy indices are presented. The Variation of these mechanical properties was explained based on the Mulliken population analysis and charge density mapping (CDM). The electronic properties have been dealt with by considering electronic band structure and density of states (DOS) which confirmed the metallic nature of Zr2AB2 (A = In, Tl). The lowly dispersive energy bands along the c-direction confirmed anisotropy in conductivity. The analysis of DOS revealed the dominant contribution from Zr-d orbitals to the conductivity with a small contribution from the In/Tl-p states contributing at the Fermi level. The Debye temperature (Theta-D), minimum thermal conductivity (Kmin), Gruneisen parameter and melting temperature (Tm) have been calculated. The higher values of Theta-D and Tm, and lower value of Kmin for Zr2AB2 (A = In, Tl) compared to those of Zr2AC (A = In, Tl). Besides, the specific heat capacities, thermal expansion coefficient, and different thermodynamic potential functions have been calculated. The optical constants have been studied to reveal their possible relevance for application purposes. The reflectivity spectra revealed the applicability of Zr2AB2 (A = In, Tl) as cover materials to diminish the solar heating. The studied physical properties of Zr2AB2 (A = In, Tl) are compared with those of other relevant 212 and 211 MAX phase nanolaminates.

Dynamical stability, Vibrational and optical properties of anti-perovskite A3BX (Ti3TlN, Ni3SnN and Co3AlC) phases: a first principles study

We have investigated various physical properties including phonon dispersion, thermodynamic parameters, optical constants, Fermi surface, Mulliken bond population, theoretical Vickers hardness and damage tolerance of anti-perovskite A3BX phases for the first time by employing density functional theory (DFT) methodology based on first principles method. Initially we assessed nine A3BX phases in total and found that only three phases (Ti3TlN, Ni3SnN and Co3AlC) are mechanically and dynamically stable based on analysis of computed elastic constants and phonon dispersion along with phonon density of states. We revisited the structural, elastic and electronic properties of the compounds to judge the reliability of our calculations. Absence of band gap at the Fermi level characterizes the phases under consideration as metallic in nature. The values of Pugh ratio, Poisson ratio and Cauchy factor have predicted the ductile nature associated with strong metallic bonding in these compounds. High temperature feasibility study of the phases has also been performed using the thermodynamic properties, such as the free energy, enthalpy, entropy, heat capacity and Debye temperature. The Vickers hardness of the compounds are estimated to be around 4 GPa which is comparable to many well-known MAX phases, indicating their reasonable hardness and easily machinable nature. The static refractive index n(zero) has been found around 8.0 for the phases under study that appeals as potential candidate to design optoelectronics appliances. The reflectivity is found above 44 percent for the Ti3TlN compound in the energy range of 0 to 14.8 eV demonstrating that this material holds significant promise as a coating agent to avoid solar heating.

Physical properties of new MAX phase borides M2SB (M = Zr, Hf and Nb) in comparison with conventional MAX phase carbides M2SC (M = Zr, Hf and Nb): Comprehensive insights

In this article, a detailed study of the recently synthesized MAX phase borides M2SB (M = Zr, Hf and Nb) has been performed via first principles technique. Investigation of mechanical hardness, elastic anisotropy, optical properties, dynamical stability and thermal properties are considered for the first time. The estimated values of stiffness constants and elastic moduli are found in good agreement with available results. The micro and macro hardness (Hmicro and Hmacro) parameters are calculated. The Vickers hardness is also calculated using Mulliken population analysis. The electronic density of states and charge density mapping are used to explain the variation of stiffness constants, elastic moduli and hardness parameters among the studied ternary borides. The Nb2SB compound is found to show best combination of mechanical properties. Mixture of covalent and ionic bonding within these borides is explained using Mulliken population analysis. The direction dependent values of Youngs modulus, compressibility, shear modulus and Poissons ratio are visualized by 2D and 3D representations and different anisotropic factors are calculated. The important optical constants are calculated and analyzed. The metallic nature of the studied borides is confirmed from the DOS and optical properties. The reflectivity spectra reveal the potential use of Zr2SB as coating materials to diminish solar heating. The studied borides are dynamically stable as confirmed from the phonon dispersion curves. The characteristic thermodynamic properties have also been calculated and analyzed. The physical properties of corresponding 211 MAX phase carbides are also calculated for comparison with those of the titled ternary borides.

Recently predicted ternary boride Hf3PB4: Insights into the physical properties of this hardest possible boride MAX phase

In this work, we have explored via first principles study of mechanical properties including Vickers hardness and mechanical anisotropy, electronic charge density distribution, Fermi surface, thermodynamic and optical properties of the recently predicted thermodynamically stable MAX phase boride Hf3PB4 for the first time. The calculated lattice constants of the optimized cell are consistent with those found by the predicted data available. Mechanical properties such as C44, B, G, Y, Hmacro and Hmicro of Hf3PB4 boride are compared with those of existing MAX phases. None of the MAX compounds synthesized so far has higher Hmacro and/or Hmicro than that of the predicted Hf3PB4 nanolaminate. Calculations of stiffness constants (Cij) indicate that Hf3PB4 is mechanically stable. The extraordinarily high values of elastic moduli and hardness parameters are explained with the use of density of states (DOS) and charge density mapping (CDM). The high stiffness of Hf3PB4 arises because of the additional B atoms which results in the strong B B covalent bonds in the crystal. The band structure and DOS calculations are used to confirm the metallic properties with dominant contribution from the Hf-5d states to the electronic states around the Fermi level. The technologically important thermal parameters such Debye temperature, minimum thermal conductivity, Gruneisen parameter and melting temperature of Hf3PB4 are calculated. It has been found that the estimated melting temperature of Hf3PB4 is also the highest among all the MAX phase nanolaminates. The important optical constants are calculated and analyzed in detail and their relevance to possible applications in the optoelectronic sectors is discussed. Our study reveals that Hf3PB4 has the potential to be the hardest known MAX phase based on the values of C44, Hmacro and Hmicro.

The structural, vibrational, thermodynamical and optical properties of technologically important, weakly coupled MAX compound, Sc2AlC are calculated using density functional theory (DFT). The structural properties of Sc2AlC are compared with results reported earlier. The vibrational, thermodynamical, and optical properties are theoretically estimated for the first time. The phonon dispersion curve has been calculated and the dynamical stability of this compound has been investigated. The optical and acoustic modes are observed clearly. We have calculated the Helmholtz free energy (F), internal energy (E), entropy (S) and specific heat capacity (Cv) from the phonon density of states. Various optical parameters have also been calculated. The reflectance spectrum shows that it this compound has the potential to be used as a solar reflector.

First-principles prediction of mechanical and bonding characteristics of new T2 superconductor Ta5GeB2

In the present paper, DFT (Density Functional Theory) based first-principles methods are applied to investigate the mechanical and bonding properties of newly synthesized T2 phase superconductor Ta5GeB2 for the first time. The calculated lattice constants are in reasonable agreement with the experiment. The elastic constants (Cij), bulk modulus (B), shear modulus (G), Young's modulus (Y), Poisson ratio (nu), Pugh ratio (G/B), and elastic anisotropy factor, A, of Ta5GeB2 are calculated to explore the mechanical behavior of the compound. To give an explanation of the bonding nature of this new ternary tetragonal system, the band structure, density of states, and Mulliken atomic population are investigated. The estimated Debye temperature and Vickers hardness are also used to justify both the mechanical and bonding properties of Ta5GeB2.

New MAX Phase Compound Mo2TiAlC2: First-principles Study

A theoretical study of Mo2TiAlC2 compound belonging to the MAX phases has been performed by using the firstprinciples pseudopotential plane-wave method within the generalized gradient approximation. We have calculated the structural, elastic, electronic and optical properties of Mo2TiAlC2. To confirm mechanical stability, the elastic constants Cij are calculated. Other elastic parameters such as bulk modulus, shear modulus, compressibility, Young modulus, anisotropic factor, Pugh ratio, Poisson ratio are also calculated. The energy band structure and density of states are calculated and analyzed. The results show that the electrical conductivity is metallic with a high density of states at the Fermi level in which Mo 4d states dominate. Furthermore, the optical properties such as dielectric function, refractive index, photoconductivity, absorption coefficients, loss function and reflectivity are also calculated. Its reflectance spectrum shows that it has the potential to be used as a promising shielding material to avoid solar heating.

Structural, elastic, and electronic properties of newly discovered Li2PtSi3 superconductor: Effect of transition metals

First-principles calculations within the density functional theory (DFT) with GGA-PBE exchange-correlation scheme have been employed to predict the structural, the elastic and the electronic properties of newly discovered lithium silicide superconductor, Li2PtSi3, for the first time. All the theoretical results are compared with those calculated recently for isostructural Li2IrSi3. The present study sheds light on the effect of replacement of transition metal element Ir with Pt on different mechanical, electronic, and superconducting properties. The effect of spin-orbit coupling on electronic band structure was found to be insignificant for Li2PtSi3. The difference in superconducting transition temperatures of Li2PtSi3 and Li2IrSi3 arises primarily due to the difference in electronic energy density of states at the Fermi level. Somewhat reduced Debye temperature in Li2PtSi3 plays a minor role. We have discussed the implications of the theoretical results in details in this study.

First-principles study of Vickers hardness and thermodynamic properties of Ti3SnC2 polymorphs

We have investigated Vickers hardness and the thermodynamic properties of the recently discovered nanolaminate carbide Ti3SnC2 polymorphs using the first-principles calculations. The chemical bonding shows a combination of covalent, ionic and metallic types. The strong covalent bonding is mainly responsible for high Vickers hardness of Ti3SnC2 polymorphs. Thermodynamic properties are studied using the quasi-harmonic Debye model. The variation of bulk modulus, thermal expansion co-efficient, specific heats, and Debye temperature with applied pressure (P) and temperature (T) are investigated systematically within the ranges of 0 - 50 GPa and 0 - 1000 K. The calculated results have been compared with available experimental and theoretical data.

Structural, Elastic, and Electronic Properties of Recently Discovered Ternary Silicide Superconductor Li2IrSi3: An ab-initio Study

The structural, elastic, and electronic properties of the very recently discovered ternary silicide superconductor, Li2IrSi3, have been calculated using ab-initio technique. We have carried out the plane-wave pseudopotential approach within the framework of the first-principles density functional theory (DFT) implemented within the CASTEP code. The calculated structural parameters show a reasonable agreement with the experimental results. Elastic moduli of this interesting material have been calculated for the first time. The electronic band structure and electronic energy density of states indicate the strong covalent Ir-Si and Si-Si bonding which lead to the formation of the rigid structure of Li2IrSi3. Strong covalency give rise to a high Debye temperature in this system. We have discussed the theoretical results in detail in this paper.

Elastic, thermodynamic, electronic and optical properties of U2Ti

An investigation of U2Ti, a potentially safe and heavy metal-based storage material for radioactive tritium for fusion reactor, has been performed using pseudopotential density functional theory. The analysis of the elastic constants and other moduli calculated for the first time shows large anisotropy on elasticity and brittle behavior. A quasi-harmonic Debye model, which considers the vibrational contribution to the total free energy of the system, has been used to investigate the finite-temperature and finite-pressure thermodynamic properties of U2Ti. The electronic band structure reveals metallic conductivity and the major contribution comes from U-5f states. By analyzing the optical spectra, the origin of the various structures is also explained in terms of the calculated electronic structure. Further the reflectivity spectrum shows that the material is perfect reflector within the energy range 8-12.5 eV. Mechanical, thermal and optical properties of perovskite borides RRh3B(R = Y, Zr, and Nb)

We report here ab initio density functional theory (DFT) calculations of structural, elastic, Peierls stress, thermodynamic and optical properties of RRh3B (R = Y, Zr and Nb) using the plane wave psedudopotential method. The materials possess better ductile behavior in comparison with a selection of layered MAX phases but the anisotropy is strong, particularly in NbRh3B. The Peierls stress, approximately 3-4 times larger than in MAX phases, show that dislocation movement may follow but with much reduced occurrences compared to MAX phases. The temperature and pressure dependence of bulk modulus, specific heats, thermal expansion coefficient, and Debye temperature are calculated for the first time for two of the three compounds using the quasi-harmonic Debye model with phononic effects for elevated temperature and pressure. The obtained results are discussed in comparison to the behavior of other related compounds. Further the features of optical functions obtained for the first time are discussed. The study reveals that the reflectivity is high in the IR-UV regions up to ~ 17.5 eV (YRh3B, ZrRh3B) and 20 eV (NbRh3B), thus showing promise as good coating materials. Newly synthesized Ti5Al2C3: Electronic and optical properties by first-principles method

A theoretical study of the newly identified Ti5Al2C3 belonging to the MAX phases has been performed by using the first-principles pseudopotential plane-wave method within the generalized gradient approximation (GGA). The energy band structure and optical properties are reported for the first time. It is seen that Ti 3d electrons mainly contribute to the DOS at the Fermi level, and should be involved in the conduction properties. The parameters of optical properties (dielectric function, absorption spectrum, conductivity, energy-loss spectrum and reflectivity) for Ti5Al2C3 are calculated and discussed. The material has a large positive static dielectric constant of 130 which indicates it to be a good dielectric material. Further the reflectivity of Ti5Al2C3 is high in the infrared-visible-UV region up to ~ 9.7 eV showing promise as a good coating material to avoid solar heating. Phase stability, elastic, electronic, thermal and optical properties of Ti3Al1-xSixC2 (0 LE x LE 1): First-principles study

The structural parameters with stability upon Si incorporation and elastic, electronic, thermodynamic and optical properties of Ti3Al1-xSixC2 (0 \leq x \leq 1) are investigated systematically by the plane wave psedudopotential method based on the density functional theory (DFT). The increase of some elastic parameters with increasing Si-content renders the alloys to possess higher compressive and tensile strength. The Vickers hardness value obtained with the help of Mulliken population analysis increases as x is increased from 0 to 1. The solid solutions considered are all metallic with valence and conduction bands, which have a mainly Ti 3d character, crossing the Fermi level. The temperature and pressure dependences of bulk modulus, normalized volume, specific heats, thermal expansion coefficient, and Debye temperature are all obtained through the quasi-harmonic Debye model with phononic effects for T = 0-1000K and P = 0-50GPa. The obtained results are compared with other results where available. Further an analysis of optical functions for two polarization vectors reveals that the reflectivity is high in the visible-ultraviolet region up to ~ 10.5 eV region showing promise as good coating material. Sn1-xBixO2 and Sn1-xTaxO2 (0 \leq x \leq 0.75): A first-principles study

The structural, elastic, electronic and optical (x = 0) properties of doped Sn1-xBixO2 and Sn1-xTaxO2 (0 \leq x \leq 0.75) are studied by using the first-principles pseudopotential plane-wave method within the local density approximation. The independent elastic constants Cij and other elastic parameters of these compounds have been calculated for the first time. The mechanical stability of the compounds with different doping concentrations has also been studied. The electronic band structure and density of states are calculated and the effect of doping on these properties is also analyzed. It is seen that the band gap of the undoped compound narrowed with dopant concentration which disappeared for x = 0.26 for Bi doping and 0.36 for Ta doping. The materials thus become conductive oxides through the change in the electronic properties of the compound for x \leq 0.75 which may be useful for potential application. The calculated optical properties, e.g. dielectric function, refractive index, absorption spectrum, loss-function, reflectivity and conductivity of the undoped SnO2 in two polarization directions are compared with both previous calculations and measurements. Superconducting MAX phases Nb2AC (A = S, Sn): An ab-initio study

An ab-initio investigation of structural parameters, elastic, electronic, thermodynamic and optical properties of MAX phases Nb2AC (A = S, Sn) has been carried out by the plane wave psedudopotential method based on density functional theory (DFT). The effect on results of substitution of heavier Sn atoms for the lighter S atoms in the nanolaminate network has been made. The analysis of the electronic band structure shows that these compounds are electrical conductors, with contribution predominantly from the Nb 4d states. The temperature and pressure dependence of bulk modulus, Debye temperature, specific heats, thermal expansion coefficient of the nanolaminates are calculated for the first time using the quasi-harmonic Debye model with phononic effects. The estimated values of electron-phonon coupling constants (lambda ~ 0.49, ~0.59) imply that Nb2SC and Nb2SnC are moderately coupled superconductors. Further first time detailed analysis of all optical functions reveals that Nb2SC is a better dielectric material, and also both the phases, having similar reflectivity spectra, show promise as good coating materials in the energy regions 10-16.5 eV. Synthesized inverse-perovskites Sc3InX (X = B, C, N): A theoretical investigation

We present first-principles density functional theory (DFT) investigations of mechanical, thermodynamic and optical properties of synthesized inverse-perovskites Sc3InX (X = B, C, N). The elastic constants at zero pressure and temperature are calculated and the anisotropic behavior of the compounds is illustrated. All the three materials are shown to be brittle in nature. The computed Peierls stress, approximately 3 to 5 times larger than of a selection of MAX phases, show that dislocation movement may follow but with much reduced occurrences compared to these MAX phases. The Mulliken bonding population and charge density maps show stronger covalency between Sc and X atoms compared with Sc-Sc bond. The Vickers hardness values of Sc3InX are predicted to be between 3.03 and 3.88 GPa. The Fermi surfaces of Sc3InX contain both hole- and electron-like topology which changes as one replaces B with C or N. The bulk modulus, specific heats, thermal expansion coefficient, and Debye temperature are calculated as a function both temperature and pressure using the quasi-harmonic Debye model with phononic effects. The results so obtained are analysed in comparison to the characteristics of other related compounds. Moreover optical functions are calculated and discussed for the first time. The reflectivity is found to be high in the IR-UV regions up to ~ 10.7 eV (Sc3InB, Sc3InC) and 12.3 eV (Sc3InN), thus showing promise as good coating materials. Theoretical investigations of superconducting MAX phases Ti2InX (X = C, N)

The structural, elastic, electronic, thermal and optical properties of superconducting MAX phases Ti2InX (X = C, N) are investigated by density functional theory (DFT). The results obtained from the least studied nitride phase are discussed in comparison with those of carbide phase having Tc-value half as that of the former. The band structure and density of states show that these phases are conductors, with contribution predominantly from the Ti 3d states. The bulk modulus, Debye temperature, specific heats, thermal expansion coefficient are all obtained as a function of temperature and pressure for the first time through the quasi-harmonic Debye model with phononic effects. Ti2InC and Ti2InN are indicated to be moderately coupled superconductors. The thermal expansion coefficients for both the phases are calculated, and the calculation is in fair agreement with the only available measured value for Ti2InC. Further the first time calculated optical functions reveal that the reflectivity is high in the IR-visible-UV region up to ~ 10 eV and 12.8 eV for Ti2InC and Ti2InN, respectively showing these to be promising coating materials. Elastic, electronic and optical properties of hypothetical SnNNi3 and CuNNi3 in comparison with superconducting ZnNNi3

The elastic, electronic and optical properties of MNNi3 (M= Zn, Sn and Cu) have been calculated using the plane-wave ultrasoft pseudopotential technique which is based on the first-principles density functional theory (DFT) with generalized gradient approximation (GGA). The optimized lattice parameters, independent elastic constants (C11, C12, and C44), bulk modulus B, Compressibility K, shear modulus G, and Poisson's ratio \u{psion}, as well as the band structures, total and atom projected densities of states and finally the optical properties of MNNi3 have been evaluated and discussed. The electronic band structures of the two hypothetical compounds show metallic behavior just like the superconducting ZnNNi3. Using band structures, the origin of features that appear in different optical properties of all the three compounds have been discussed. The large reflectivity of the predicted compounds in the low energy region might be good candidate materials as a coating to avoid solar heating. Phase stability and physical properties of hypothetical V4SiC3

We study the phase stability, mechanical, electronic, optical properties and Vicker's hardness of the newly predicted layered compound V4SiC3 using the first-principles method. This hypothetical compound is found to possess higher bulk modulus as well as higher hardness than those of a similar V4AlC3. The Mulliken bond population analysis indicates that the substitution of Al atom with the Si atom increases the Vicker's hardness of this compound. The electronic band structure shows that the conductivity is metallic and the main contribution comes from V 3d states. The partial density of states (PDOS) shows that the hybridization peak of V 3d and C 2s lies lower in energy than that of V 3d and Si 3p states which suggests that the V 3d - C 2s bond is stronger than the V 3d - Si 3p bond. The results are consistent with our bond analysis. Further we have discussed the origin of the features that appear in the optical properties. V4SiC3 is seen as a promising dielectric material showing a much better candidate material as a coating to avoid solar heating than those of V4AlC3, α-Nb4SiC3 and Ti4AlN3 compounds. Structural, elastic, electronic and optical properties of a newly predicted layered-ternary Ti4SiN3: A First-principles study

We study a newly predicted layered-ternary compound Ti4SiN3 in its α- and β-phases. We calculate their mechanical, electronic and optical properties and then compare these with those of other compounds M4AX3 (M = V, Ti, Ta; A = Si, Al; X = N, C). The results show that the hypothetical Ti4SiN3 shows an improved behavior of the resistance to shape change and uniaxial tensions and a slight elastic anisotropy. The electronic band structures for both α- and β-Ti4SiN3 show metallic conductivity in which Ti 3d states dominate. The hybridization peak of Ti 3d and N 2s lies lower in energy than that of Ti 3d and Si 3p states which suggests that the Ti 3d - N 2s bond is stronger than the Ti 3d - Si 3p bond. Using band structure we discuss the origin of different features of optical properties. The α-phase of predicted compound has improved behavior in reflectivity compared to those of similar types of compounds. AlH3 between 65-110 GPa: implications of electronic band and phonon structures

A first-principles density-functional-theory method has been used to reinvestigate the mechanical and dynamical stability of the metallic phase of AlH3 between 65-110 GPa. The electronic properties and phonon dynamics as a function of pressure are also explored. We find electron-phonon superconductivity in the cubic Pm-3n structure with critical temperature Tc = 37 K at 70 GPa which decreases rapidly with the increase of pressure. Further unlike a previously calculated Tc value of 24 K at 110 GPa, we do not find any superconductivity of significance at this pressure which is consistent with experimental observation.

Structural, Elastic, Electronic and Optical Properties of a New Layered-Ternary Ta4SiC3 Compound

We propose a new layered-ternary Ta4SiC3 with two different stacking sequences (α- and β-phases) of the metal atoms along c axis and study their structural stability. The mechanical, electronic and optical properties are then calculated and compared with those of other compounds M4AX3 (M = V, Nb, Ta; A = Al, Si and X = C). The predicted compound in the α-phase is found to possess higher hardness than any of these compounds. The independent elastic constants of the two phases are also evaluated and the results discussed. The electronic band structures for α- and β-Ta4SiC3 show metallic conductivity. Ta 5d electrons are mainly contributing to the total density of states (DOS). We see that the hybridization peak of Ta 5d and C 2p lies lower in energy and the Ta 5d-C 2p bond is stronger than Ta 5d-Si 3p bond. Further an analysis of the different optical properties shows the compound to possess improved behavior compared to similar types of compounds.

Superconductivity in Diamond-like BC3 Phase: A First-principles Investigation

Two possible phases of superhard material BC3 originating from the cubic diamond structure are investigated by ab initio pseudopotential density functional method using generalized gradient approximation (GGA).
