Nematic correlation length in iron-based superconductors probed by inelastic x-ray scattering

Nematicity is ubiquitous in electronic phases of high-$T_c$ superconductors, particularly in the Fe-based systems. We used inelastic x-ray scattering to extract the temperature-dependent nematic correlation length $ξ$ from the anomalous softening of acoustic phonon modes in FeSe, underdoped Ba(Fe$_{0.97}$Co$_{0.03}$)$_2$As$_2$ and optimally doped Ba(Fe$_{0.94}$Co$_{0.06}$)$_2$As$_2$. In all cases, we find that $ξ$ is well described by a power law $(T-T_0)^{-1/2}$ extending over a wide temperature range. We attributed this mean-field behavior and the extended fluctuation regime to a sizable nemato-elastic coupling, which may be detrimental to superconductivity.

Phonon collapse and van der Waals melting of the 3D charge density wave of VSe$_2$

Among transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs), VSe$_2$ is considered to develop a purely 3-dimensional (3D) charge-density wave (CDW) at T$_{CDW}$=110 K. Here, by means of high resolution inelastic x-ray scattering (IXS), we show that the CDW transition is driven by the collapse of an acoustic mode at the critical wavevector \textit{q}$_{CDW}$= (2.25 0 0.7) r.l.u. and critical temperature T$_{CDW}$=110 K. The softening of this mode starts to be pronounced for temperatures below 2$\times$ T$_{CDW}$ and expands over a rather wide region of the Brillouin zone, suggesting a large contribution of the electron-phonon interaction to the CDW formation. This interpretation is supported by our first principles calculations that determine a large momentum-dependence of the electron-phonon interaction, peaking at the CDW wavevector, in the presence of nesting. Fully anharmonic {\it ab initio} calculations confirm the softening of one acoustic branch at \textit{q}$_{CDW}$ as responsible for the CDW formation and show that van der Waals interactions are crucial to melt the CDW. Our work also highlights the important role of out-of-plane interactions to describe 3D CDWs in TMDs.

Superconducting energy gap of $2H$-NbSe$_2$ in phonon spectroscopy

We present a high energy-resolution inelastic x-ray scattering data investigation of the charge-density-wave (CDW) soft phonon mode upon entering the superconducting state in $2H$-NbSe$_2$. Measurements were done close to the CDW ordering wavevector $\mathbf{q}_{CDW}$ at $\mathbf{q}=\mathbf{q}_{CDW}+(0,0,l)$,$0.15\leq l \leq 0.5$, for $T=10\,\rm{K}$ (CDW order) and $3.8\,\rm{K}$ (CDW order + superconductivity). We observe changes of the phonon lineshape that are characteristic for systems with strong electron-phonon coupling in the presence of a superconducting energy gap $2Δ_c$ and from which we can demonstrate an $l$-dependence of the superconducting gap. Reversely, our data imply that the CDW energy gap is strongly localized along the $c^*$ direction. The confinement of the CDW gap to a very small momentum region explains the rather low competition and easy coexistence of CDW order and superconductivity in $2H$-NbSe$_2$. However, the energy gained by opening $Δ_{CDW}$ seems to be too small to be the driving force of the phase transition at $T_{CDW}=33\,\rm{K}$ , which is better described as an electron-phonon coupling driven structural phase transition.

Superconductivity and hybrid soft modes in TiSe$_2$

The competition between superconductivity and other ground states of solids is one of the challenging topics in condensed matter physics. Apart from high-temperature superconductors [1,2] this interplay also plays a central role in the layered transition-metal dichalcogenides, where superconductivity is stabilized by suppressing charge-density-wave order to zero temperature by intercalation [3] or applied pressure [4-7]. 1T-TiSe$_2$ forms a prime example, featuring superconducting domes on intercalation as well as under applied pressure. Here, we present high energy-resolution inelastic x-ray scattering measurements of the CDW soft phonon mode in intercalated Cu$_x$TiSe$_2$ and pressurized 1T-TiSe$_2$ along with detailed ab-initio calculations for the lattice dynamical properties and phonon-mediated superconductivity. We find that the intercalation-induced superconductivity can be explained by a solely phonon-mediated pairing mechanism, while this is not possible for the superconducting phase under pressure. We argue that a hybridization of phonon and exciton modes in the pairing mechanism is necessary to explain the full observed temperature-pressure-intercalation phase diagram. These results indicate that 1T-TiSe$_2$ under pressure is close to the elusive state of the excitonic insulator.

Ultrafast energy and momentum resolved dynamics of magnetic correlations in photo-doped Mott insulator Sr$_2$IrO$_4$

Measuring how the magnetic correlations throughout the Brillouin zone evolve in a Mott insulator as charges are introduced dramatically improved our understanding of the pseudogap, non-Fermi liquids and high $T_C$ superconductivity. Recently, photoexcitation has been used to induce similarly exotic states transiently. However, understanding how these states emerge has been limited because of a lack of available probes of magnetic correlations in the time domain, which hinders further investigation of how light can be used to control the properties of solids. Here we implement magnetic resonant inelastic X-ray scattering at a free electron laser, and directly determine the magnetization dynamics after photo-doping the Mott insulator Sr$_2$IrO$_4$. We find that the non-equilibrium state 2~ps after the excitation has strongly suppressed long-range magnetic order, but hosts photo-carriers that induce strong, non-thermal magnetic correlations. The magnetism recovers its two-dimensional (2D) in-plane Néel correlations on a timescale of a few ps, while the three-dimensional (3D) long-range magnetic order restores over a far longer, fluence-dependent timescale of a few hundred ps. The dramatic difference in these two timescales, implies that characterizing the dimensionality of magnetic correlations will be vital in our efforts to understand ultrafast magnetic dynamics.

Wave vector dependent electron-phonon coupling drives charge-density-wave formation in TbTe3

We present a high energy-resolution inelastic x-ray scattering investigation of the soft phonon mode in the charge-density-wave system TbTe$_3$. We analyze our data based on lattice dynamical calculations using density-functional-perturbation-theory and find clear evidence that strongly momentum dependent electron-phonon-coupling defines the periodicity of the CDW superstructure: Our experiment reveals strong phonon softening and increased phonon line widths over a large part in reciprocal space adjacent to the CDW ordering vector $q_{CDW} = (0, 0, 0.3)$. Further, $q_{CDW}$ is clearly offset from the wave vector of (weak) Fermi surface nesting $q_{FS} = (0, 0, 0.25)$ and our detailed analysis indicates that electron-phonon-coupling is responsible for this shift. Hence, we can add TbTe$_3$, which was previously considered as a canonical CDW compound following the Peierls scenario, to the list of distinct charge-density-wave materials characterized by momentum dependent electron-phonon coupling.

Excitonic quasiparticles in a spin-orbit Mott insulator

In condensed matter systems, out of a large number of interacting degrees of freedom emerge weakly coupled particles, in terms of which most physical properties are described. For example, Landau quasiparticles (QP) determine all electronic properties of a normal metal. The lack of identification of such QPs is major barrier for understanding myriad exotic properties of correlated electrons, such as unconventional superconductivity and non-Fermi liquid behaviours. Here, we report the observation of a composite particle in a Mott insulator Sr2IrO4---and exciton dressed with magnons---that propagates with the canonical characteristics of a QP: a finite QP residue and a lifetime longer than the hopping time scale. The dynamics of this charge-neutral bosonic excitation mirrors the fundamental process of the analogous one-hole propagation in the background of ordered spins, for which a well-defined QP has never been observed. The much narrower linewidth of the exciton reveals the same intrinsic dynamics that is obscured for the hole and is intimately related to the mechanism of high temperature superconductivity.

Tuning Magnetic Coupling in Sr$_2$IrO$_4$ Thin Films with Epitaxial Strain

We report x-ray resonant magnetic scattering (XRMS) and resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) studies of epitaxially-strained $\mathrm{Sr_2IrO_4}$ thin films. The films were grown on $\mathrm{SrTiO_3}$ and $\mathrm{(LaAlO_3)_{0.3}(Sr_2AlTaO_6)_{0.7}}$ substrates, under slight tensile and compressive strains, respectively. Although the films develop a magnetic structure reminiscent of bulk $\mathrm{Sr_2IrO_4}$, the magnetic correlations are extremely anisotropic, with in-plane correlation lengths significantly longer than the out-of-plane correlation lengths. In addition, the compressive (tensile) strain serves to suppress (enhance) the magnetic ordering temperature $\mathrm{T_N}$, while raising (lowering) the energy of the zone boundary magnon. Quantum chemical calculations show that the tuning of magnetic energy scales can be understood in terms of strain-induced change in bond lengths.

An inelastic x-ray study of phonon broadening and charge density wave formation in ortho-II ordered YBa2Cu3O6.54

Inelastic x-ray scattering is used to investigate charge density wave (CDW) formation and the low-energy lattice dynamics of the underdoped high temperature superconductor ortho-II YBa2Cu3O6.54. We find that, for a temperature ~1/3 of the CDW onset temperature (~155 K), the CDW order is static within the resolution of the experiment, that is the inverse lifetime is less than 0.3 meV. In the same temperature region, low-energy phonons near the ordering wavevector of the CDW show large increases in their linewidths. This contrasts with the usual behavior in CDW systems where the phonon anomalies are strongest near the CDW onset temperature

Magnetic excitation spectrum of Na2IrO3 probed with resonant inelastic x-ray scattering

The low energy excitations in Na2IrO3 have been investigated using resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS). A magnetic excitation branch can be resolved, whose dispersion reaches a maximum energy of about 35 meV at the Γ-point. The momentum dependence of the excitation energy is much larger along the Γ-X direction compared to that along the Γ-Y direction. The observed dispersion relation is consistent with a recent theoretical prediction based on Heisenberg-Kitaev model. At high temperatures, we find large contributions from lattice vibrational modes to our RIXS spectra, suggesting that a strong electron-lattice coupling is present in Na2IrO3.

Crystal field splitting and correlation effect on the electronic structure of A2IrO3

The electronic structure of the honeycomb lattice iridates Na2IrO3 and Li2IrO3 has been investigated using resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS). Crystal-field split d-d excitations are resolved in the high-resolution RIXS spectra. In particular, the splitting due to non-cubic crystal fields, derived from the splitting of j_eff=3/2 states, is much smaller than the typical spin-orbit energy scale in iridates, validating the applicability of j_eff physics in A2IrO3. We also find excitonic enhancement of the particle-hole excitation gap around 0.4 eV, indicating that the nearest-neighbor Coulomb interaction could be large. These findings suggest that both Na2IrO3 and Li2IrO3 can be described as spin-orbit Mott insulators, similar to the square lattice iridate Sr2IrO4.

Giant Magnon Gap in Bilayer Iridate Sr3Ir2O7: Enhanced Pseudo-dipolar Interactions Near the Mott Transition

Using resonant inelastic x-ray scattering, we observe in the bilayer iridate Sr3Ir2O7, a spin-orbit coupling driven magnetic insulator with a small charge gap, a magnon gap of ~92 meV for both acoustic and optical branches. This exceptionally large magnon gap exceeds the total magnon bandwidth of ~70 meV and implies a marked departure from the Heisenberg model, in stark contrast to the case of the single-layer iridate Sr2IrO4. Analyzing the origin of these observations, we find that the giant magnon gap results from bond-directional pseudo-dipolar interactions that are strongly enhanced near the metal-insulator transition boundary. This suggests that novel magnetism, such as that inspired by the Kitaev model built on the pseudo-dipolar interactions, may emerge in small charge-gap iridates.

Magnetism dependent phonon anomaly in LaFeAsO observed via inelastic x-ray scattering

The phonon dispersion was measured at room temperature along (0,0,L) in the tetragonal phase of LaFeAsO using inelastic x-ray scattering. Spin-polarized first-principles calculations imposing various types of antiferromagnetic order are in better agreement with the experimental results than nonmagnetic calculations, although the measurements were made well above the magnetic ordering temperature, T_N. Splitting observed between two A_{1g} phonon modes at 22 and 26 meV is only observed in spin-polarized calculations. Magneto-structural effects similar to those observed in the AFe_2As_2 materials are confirmed present in LaFeAsO. The presence of Fe-spin is necessary to find reasonable agreement of the calculations with the measured spectrum well above T_N. On-site Fe and As force constants show significant softening compared to nonmagnetic calculations, however an investigation of the real-space force constants associates the magnetoelastic coupling with a complex renormalization instead of softening of a specific pairwise force.

Probing electronic order via coupling to low energy phonons in superconducting Bi$_2$Sr$_{2-x}$La$_x$CuO$_{6+δ}$

We report high-resolution inelastic x-ray scattering measurements of the acoustic phonons in the single-layer cuprate $Bi_{2}Sr_{2-x)La_{x}CuO_{6+δ}$. These measurements reveal anomalous broadening of the longitudinal acoustic phonon near the (1/4,1/4,0) wavevector. The observed wavevector and its doping dependence indicate the coupling of the phonons to an underlying electronic density wave state. In addition, a comparison of the scattered intensities for x-ray energy-gain and x-ray energy-loss indicates that both time-reversal and inversion symmetries are broken in the material. Upon cooling, the effects of symmetry breaking are enhanced in the pseudogap state.

Extended Phonon Collapse and the Origin of the Charge-Density-Wave in NbSe$_2$

We report inelastic x-ray scattering measurements of the temperature dependence of phonon dispersion in the prototypical charge-density-wave (CDW) compound NbSe2. Surprisingly, acoustic phonons soften to zero frequency and become overdamped over an extended region around the CDW wavevector. This extended phonon collapse is dramatically different from the sharp cusp in the phonon dispersion expected from Fermi surface nesting. Instead, our experiments combined with ab initio calculations, show that it is the wavevector dependence of the electron-phonon coupling that drives the CDW formation in NbSe$_2$ and determines its periodicity. This mechanism explains the so far enigmatic behavior of CDW in NbSe$_2$ and may provide a new approach to other strongly correlated systems where electron-phonon coupling is important.

Spin-Split Conduction band in \eb\ and Tuning of Half-Metallicity with External Stimuli

We report Eu L3-edge resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) investigation of the electronic structure of EuB6. We observe that the RIXS spectral weight around 1.1 eV increases dramatically when the system is cooled below the ferromagnetic ordering temperature and follows the magnetic order parameter. This spectral feature is attributed to the inter-site excitation from the local 4f orbital to the spin-split 5d orbital on the neighboring site, illustrating the essential role of exchange splitting of the conducting electrons. Based on our density functional theory calculations, the RIXS data suggest that EuB6 at low temperature can be consistently described with a semi-metallic electronic structure with incomplete spin-polarization. We propose routes to achieve half-metallicity in EuB6, which utilize the strong tunability of the electronic structure against gate voltage, strain, and magnetic field.

Phonons and superconductivity in YbC$_6$ and related compounds

The out-of-plane intercalate phonons of superconducting YbC6 have been measured with inelastic x-ray scattering. Model fits to this data, and previously measured out-of-plane intercalate phonons in graphite intercalation compounds (GICs), reveal surprising trends with the superconducting transition temperature. These trends suggest that superconducting GICs should be viewed as electron-doped graphite.

Phonons as a probe of the magnetic state in doped and undoped BaFe2As2

We measured phonon frequencies and linewidths in doped and undoped BaFe2As2 single crystals by inelastic x-ray scattering and compared our results with density functional theory (DFT) calculations. In agreement with previous work, the calculated frequencies of some phonons depended on whether the ground state was magnetic or not and, in the former case, whether phonon wavevector was parallel or perpendicular to the magnetic ordering wavevector. The experimental results agreed better with the magnetic calculation than with zero Fe moment calculations, except the peak splitting expected due to magnetic domain twinning was not observed. Furthermore, phonon frequencies were unaffected by the breakdown of the magnetic ground state due to either doping or increased temperature. Based on these results we propose that phonons strongly couple not to the static order, but to high frequency magnetic fluctuations.

C-axis Phonons in Fe-As Based Superconductors Investigated by Inelastic X-ray Scattering

In Fe-As based superconductors magnetism and superconductivity show strong sensitivity to the lattice, suggesting a possibility of unconventional electron-phonon coupling. We investigated c-axis polarized phonons in doped and undoped BaFe2As2 by inelastic X-ray scattering. Phonon peak positions and linewidths did not vary significantly as a function of doping either by Co or by K. The linewidth of the Fe vibration shows unusual wavevector-dependence, which may be due to hybridization with in-plane modes. Comparison with the density functional theory shows significant difference for the energy of the As-As vibrations (Raman active at the zone center) but not for the Fe-As vibrations (infrared-active at the zone center). This behavior cannot be explained by a 10% softening of Fe-As interaction strength as proposed previously for in-plane polarized vibrations.

Charge excitations associated with charge stripe order in the 214-type nickelate and superconducting cuprate

Charge excitations were studied for stipe-ordered 214 compounds, La$_{5/3}$Sr$_{1/3}$NiO$_{4}$ and 1/8-doped La$_{2}$(Ba, Sr)$_{x}$CuO$_{4}$ using resonant inelastic x-ray scattering in hard x-ray regime. We have observed charge excitations at the energy transfer of 1 eV with the momentum transfer corresponding to the charge stripe spatial period both for the diagonal (nikelate) and parallel (cuprates) stripes. These new excitations can be interpreted as a collective stripe excitation or charge excitonic mode to a stripe-related in-gap state.
