T violation without complex entries in lepton mixing matrix

We demonstrate that T invariance can be violated even when Pontecorvo--Maki--Nakagawa--Sakata lepton mixing matrix is real. We obtain a sufficient condition of T violation in neutrino oscillations in matter and electromagnetic field. In the two-flavor model we derive the T-violating spin-flavor transition probabilities. Then we prove that the transition probabilities for neutrino in moving medium in electromagnetic field differ from those for antineutrino in matter composed of antiparticles and electromagnetic field only in the sign of the T-violating term.

Neutrino flavor oscillations and spin rotation in matter and electromagnetic field

We obtain a relativistically covariant wave equation for neutrinos in dense matter and electromagnetic field, which describes both flavor oscillations and neutrino spin rotation. Using this equation we construct a quasi-classical theory of these phenomena. We obtain the probabilities of arbitrary spin-flavor transitions assuming the external conditions to be constant. We demonstrate that the resonance behavior of the transition probabilities is possible only when the neutrino flavor states cannot be described as superpositions of the mass eigenstates. We discover that a resonance, which is similar to the Mikheev-Smirnov-Wolfenstein resonance, takes place for neutrinos in magnetic field due to the transition magnetic moments. This resonance gives an opportunity to determine, whether neutrinos are Dirac or Majorana particles.

Analytical treatment of long-term observations of the day-night asymmetry for solar neutrinos

The Earth's density distribution can be approximately considered piecewise continuous at the scale of two-flavor oscillations of typical solar neutrinos, such as the beryllium-7 and boron-8 neutrinos. This quite general assumption appears to be enough to analytically calculate the day-night asymmetry factor for such neutrinos. Using the explicit time averaging procedure, we show that, within the leading-order approximation, this factor is determined by the electron density within about one oscillation length under the detector, namely, in the Earth's crust (and upper mantle for high-energy neutrinos). We also evaluate the effect of the inner Earth's structure on the observed asymmetry and show that it is suppressed and mainly comes from the neutrinos observed near the winter and summer solstices. As a result, we arrive at the strict interval constraint on the asymmetry, which is valid within quite a wide class of Earth models.

Does the Borexino experiment have enough resolution to detect the neutrino flavor day-night asymmetry?

The Earth's density distribution can be approximately considered piecewise continuous at the scale of two-flavor oscillations of neutrinos with energies about 1 MeV. This quite general assumption appears to be enough to analytically calculate the day-night asymmetry factor. Using the explicit time averaging procedure, we show that, within the leading-order approximation, this factor is determined by the electron density immediately before the detector, i.e. in the Earth's crust. Within the approximation chosen, the resulting asymmetry factor does not depend either on the properties of the inner Earth's layers or on the substance and the dimensions of the detector. For beryllium neutrinos, we arrive at the asymmetry factor estimation of about $-4 \times 10^{-4}$, which is at least one order of magnitude beyond the present experimental resolution, including that of the Borexino experiment.

Pure quantum states of a neutrino with rotating spin in dense magnetized matter

The problem of neutrino spin rotation in dense matter and in strong electromagnetic fields is solved in accordance with the basic principles of quantum mechanics. We obtain a complete system of wave functions for a massive Dirac neutrino with an anomalous magnetic moment which are the eigenfunctions of the kinetic momentum operator and have the form of nonspreading wave packets. These wave functions enable one to consider the states of neutrino with rotating spin as pure quantum states and can be used for calculating probabilities of various processes with the neutrino in the framework of the Furry picture.
