Unconventional Superfluidity in a model of Fermi-Bose Mixtures

A finite-temperature ($T>0$) study of a model of a mixture of spin-zero hardcore bosons and spinless fermions, with filling fractions $ρ_B$ and $ρ_F$, respectively, on a two-dimensional square lattice with composite hopping $t$ is presented. The composite hopping swaps the locations of a fermion and a boson that occupy nearest-neighbor sites of the lattice. The superfluid order parameter $ψ$, the femion hopping amplitude $ϕ$, the chemical potential $μ$, the free energy minimum $\tilde{F}$ and entropy $S$ are calculated in the limit $ρ_B+ρ_F=1$ within a mean-field approximation, and lead to a phase diagram in the $ρ_F - T$ plane. This phase diagram consists of a metallic superfluid phase under a dome-shaped $T(ρ_F)$, and insulating normal liquid and insulating normal gas phases outside the dome. These phases are separated by coupled discontinuous transitions as indicated by jumps in $ψ$ and $ϕ$. The maximum critical transition temperature $T_c$ is observed very close to $ρ_F = 1/2$. While $\tilde{F} (T)$ is continuous with a derivative discontinuity at $T=T_c (ρ_F)$ for $0 <ρ_F \le 1/2$ (first-order transition), it becomes {\em discontinuous} for $ρ_F>1/2$ (zeroth-order transition), where the entropy becomes negative for a range of temperatures below $T_c$. The ratio of $T_c$ to Fermi band width agrees remarkably with the ratio of $T_c$/$T_F$ (where $T_F$ is the Fermi temperature) of unconventional superfluids and superconductors like Fermi-Bose mixtures, the high-$T_c$ cuprates, iron-based and hydride superconductors, that exhibit experimental values of $T_c$ spread over nine orders of magnitude from $\sim 200$nK to $\sim 260$K.

Coupled First-Order Transitions In A Fermi-Bose Mixture

A model of a mixture of spinless fermions and spin-zero hardcore bosons, with filling fractions $ρ_F$ and $ρ_B$, respectively, on a two-dimensional square lattice with {\em composite} hopping $t$ is presented. In this model, hopping swaps the locations of a fermion and a boson at nearest-neighbor sites. When $ρ_F+ρ_B=1$, the fermion hopping amplitude $ϕ$ and boson superfluid amplitude $ψ$ are calculated in the ground state within a mean-field approximation. The Fermi sector is insulating ($ϕ=0$) and the Bose sector is normal ($ψ=0$) for $0 \le ρ_F < ρ_c$. The model has {\em coupled first-order} transitions at $ρ_F = ρ_c \simeq 0.3$ where both $ϕ$ and $ψ$ are discontinuous. The Fermi sector is metallic ($ϕ>0$) and the Bose sector is superfluid ($ψ>0$) for $ρ_c < ρ_F < 1$. At $ρ_F=1/2$, fermion density of states $ρ$ has a van Hove singularity, the bulk modulus $κ$ displays a cusp-like singularity, the system has a density wave (DW) order, and $ϕ$ and $ψ$ are maximum. At $ρ_F=ρ_κ \simeq 0.81$, $κ$ vanishes, becoming {\em negative} for $ρ_κ<ρ_F<1$. The role of composite hopping in the evolution of Fermi band dispersions and Fermi surfaces as a function of $ρ_F$ is highlighted. The estimate for BEC critical temperature is in the subkelvin range for ultracold atom systems and several hundred kelvins for possible solid-state examples of the model.

Electronic structure investigation of GdNi using X-ray absorption, magnetic circular dichroism and hard x-ray photoemission spectroscopy

GdNi is a ferrimagnetic material with a Curie temperature Tc = 69 K which exhibits a large magnetocaloric effect, making it useful for magnetic refrigerator applications. We investigate the electronic structure of GdNi by carrying out x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) at T = 25 K in the ferrimagnetic phase. We analyze the Gd M$_{4,5}$-edge ($3d$ - $4f$) and Ni L$_{2,3}$-edge ($2p$ - $3d$) spectra using atomic multiplet and cluster model calculations, respectively. The atomic multiplet calculation for Gd M$_{4,5}$-edge XAS indicates that Gd is trivalent in GdNi, consistent with localized $4f$ states. On the other hand, a model cluster calculation for Ni L$_{2,3}$-edge XAS shows that Ni is effectively divalent in GdNi and strongly hybridized with nearest neighbour Gd states, resulting in a $d$-electron count of 8.57. The Gd M$_{4,5}$-edge XMCD spectrum is consistent with a ground state configuration of S = 7/2 and L=0. The Ni L$_{2,3}$-edge XMCD results indicate that the antiferromagnetically aligned Ni moments exhibit a small but finite magnetic moment ( $m_{tot}$ $\sim$ 0.12 $μ_B$ ) with the ratio $m_{o}/m_{s}$ $\sim$ 0.11. Valence band hard x-ray photoemission spectroscopy shows Ni $3d$ features at the Fermi level, confirming a partially filled $3d$ band, while the Gd $4f$ states are at high binding energies away from the Fermi level. The results indicate that the Ni $3d$ band is not fully occupied and contradicts the charge-transfer model for rare-earth based alloys. The obtained electronic parameters indicate that GdNi is a strongly correlated charge transfer metal with the Ni on-site Coulomb energy being much larger than the effective charge-transfer energy between the Ni $3d$ and Gd $4f$ states.

Temperature-Dependence of Magnetically-Active Charge Excitations in Magnetite across the Verwey Transition

We have studied the electronic structure of bulk single crystals and epitaxial films of magnetite Fe$_3$O$_4$. Fe $2p$ core-level spectra show clear differences between hard x-ray (HAX-) and soft x-ray (SX-) photoemission spectroscopy (PES), indicative of surface effects. The bulk-sensitive spectra exhibit temperature ($T$)-dependent charge excitations across the Verwey transition at $T_V$=122 K, which is missing in the surface-sensitive spectra. An extended impurity Anderson model full-multiplet analysis reveals roles of the three distinct Fe-species (A-Fe$^{3+}$, B-Fe$^{2+}$, B-Fe$^{3+}$) below $T_V$ for the Fe $2p$ spectra, and its $T-$dependent evolution. The Fe $2p$ HAXPES spectra show a clear magnetic circular dichroism (MCD) in the metallic phase of magnetized 100-nm-thick films. The model calculations also reproduce the MCD and identify the magnetically distinct sites associated with the charge excitations. Valence band HAXPES shows finite density of states at $E_F$ for the polaronic metal with remnant order above $T_V$, and a clear gap formation below $T_V$. The results indicate that the Verwey transition is driven by changes in the strongly correlated and magnetically active B-Fe$^{2+}$ and B-Fe$^{3+}$ electronic states, consistent with resistivity and bulk-sensitive optical spectra.

Frustration effects and role of selective exchange coupling for magnetic ordering in the Cairo pentagonal lattice

The Cairo pentagonal lattice, consisting of an irregular pentagonal tiling of magnetic ions on two inequivalent sites (3- and 4-co-ordinated ones), represents a fascinating example for studying geometric frustration effects in two-dimensions. In this work, we investigate the spin $S$ = $1/2$ Cairo pentagonal lattice with respect to selective exchange coupling (which effectively corresponds to a virtual doping of $x$ = $0, 1/6, 1/3$), in a nearest-neighbour antiferromagnetic Ising model. We also develop a simple method to quantify geometric frustration in terms of a frustration index $ϕ(β,T)$, where $β$ = $J/\tilde{J}$, the ratio of the two exchange couplings required by the symmetry of the Cairo lattice. At $T = 0$, the undoped Cairo pentagonal lattice shows antiferromagnetic ordering for $β\le β_{crit} = 2$, but undergoes a first-order transition to a ferrimagnetic phase for $β>$ $β_{crit}$. The results show that $ϕ(β,T = 0)$ tracks the transition in the form of a cusp maximum at $β_{crit}$. While both phases show frustration, the obtained magnetic structures reveal that the frustration originates in different bonds for the two phases. The frustration and ferrimagnetic order get quenched by selective exchange coupling, and lead to robust antiferromagnetic ordering for $x$ = 1/6 and 1/3. From mean-field calculations, we determine the temperature-dependent sub-lattice magnetizations for $x$ = $0, 1/6$ and $1/3$. The calculated results are discussed in relation to known experimental results for trivalent Bi$_2$Fe$_4$O$_9$ and mixed valent BiFe$_2$O$_{4.63}$. The study identifies the role of frustration effects, the ratio $β$ and selective exchange coupling for stabilizing ferrimagnetic versus anti-ferromagnetic order in the Cairo pentagonal lattice.

Pseudogap formation above the superconducting dome in iron-pnictides

The nature of the pseudogap in high transition temperature (high-Tc) superconducting cuprates has been a major issue in condensed matter physics. It is still unclear whether the high-Tc superconductivity can be universally associated with the pseudogap formation. Here we provide direct evidence of the existence of the pseudogap phase via angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy in another family of high-Tc superconductor, iron-pnictides. Our results reveal a composition dependent pseudogap formation in the multi-band electronic structure of BaFe2(As1-xPx)2. The pseudogap develops well above the magnetostructural transition for low x, persists above the nonmagnetic superconducting dome for optimal x and is destroyed for x ~ 0.6, thus showing a notable similarity with cuprates. In addition, the pseudogap formation is accompanied by inequivalent energy shifts in xz/yz orbitals of iron atoms, indicative of a peculiar iron orbital ordering which breaks the four-fold rotational symmetry.

Anomalous two peak structure in the Angle-resolved Photoemission Spectra of Ba1-xKxFe2As2

The electronic structure near the Fermi level (EF) of Ba1-xKxFe2As2 (BaK122 ; x = 0.2 - 0.7) is studied using laser ultrahigh-resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy(ARPES). For the optimally doped case of x = 0.4, we clearly observe two peaks below Tc in the ARPES spectra at a binding energies (BE) of 5 meV and 13meV. The former is assigned to a superconducting (SC) coherence peak since it appears and evolves below the bulk SC transition at Tc (= 36 K), accompanying a gap opening centered at EF. In contrast, the latter peak, which appears below ~ 90 K without any gap formation, is interpreted to be not directly related to a SC coherence peak. This high-BE peak is observed from x = 0.2 to 0.6, reduces in energy with overdoping (x > 0.4) and is absent for x = 0.7. The temperature(T)- and doping-dependent ARPES results suggest that the high-BE peak originates from coupling to a bosonic mode of energy ~ 8 meV.

Evidence for a cos(4φ) Modulation of the Superconducting Energy Gap of Optimally Doped FeTe_{0.6}Se_{0.4} Single Crystals Using Laser Angle-Resolved Photoemission Spectroscopy

We study the superconducting(SC)-gap anisotropy of the Γ-centered hole Fermi surface in optimally doped FeTe_{0.6}Se_{0.4} (T_c = 14.5 K), using laser-excited angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES). We observe sharp superconducting coherence peaks at T = 2.5 K. In contrast to earlier ARPES studies but consistent with thermodynamic results, the momentum dependence shows a \cos(4φ) modulation of the SC-gap anisotropy. The observed SC-gap anisotropy strongly indicates that the pairing interaction is not a conventional phonon-mediated isotropic one. Instead, the results suggest the importance of second-nearest-neighbor electronic interactions between the iron sites in the framework of s_\pm-wave superconductivity.

Photoemission Evidence for Valence Fluctuations and Kondo Resonance in YbAl2

We use hard x-ray photoemission spectroscopy (HAXPES) to investigate the electronic structure of YbAl2, for which the Yb valence has not been consistently reported to date. The bulk sensitivity and the analytical simplicity provided by the Yb 3d core-level HAXPES allow a reliable determination of the mean valence of Yb ions. For YbAl2, it is evaluated to be +2.20, which remains nearly unchanged below 300 K. The Kondo resonance peak with an extremely high Kondo temperature (above 2000 K) is clearly identified in the valence-band spectra. The results indicate that a coherent Kondo state can be robust even in a nearly divalent system.

Three-dimensional bulk band dispersion in polar BiTeI with giant Rashba-type spin splitting

In layered polar semiconductor BiTeI, giant Rashba-type spin-split band dispersions show up due to the crystal structure asymmetry and the strong spin-orbit interaction. Here we investigate the 3-dimensional (3D) bulk band structures of BiTeI using the bulk-sensitive $hν$-dependent soft x-ray angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy (SX-ARPES). The obtained band structure is shown to be well reproducible by the first-principles calculations, with huge spin splittings of ${\sim}300$ meV at the conduction-band-minimum and valence-band-maximum located in the $k_z=π/c$ plane. It provides the first direct experimental evidence of the 3D Rashba-type spin splitting in a bulk compound.

Existence of Orbital Order and its Fluctuation in Ba(Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_x$)$_2$As$_2$ Revealed by X-ray Absorption Spectroscopy

We performed temperature dependent X-ray linear dichroism (XLD) experiments on an iron pnictide system, Ba(Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_x$)$_2$As$_2$ with $x$=0.00 and 0.05, to experimentally verify existence of orbital ordering (OO). We observed clear XLD in polarization dependent X-ray absorption spectra of Fe $L$ edges. By exploiting the difference in the temperature dependent behaviors, we were able to separate OO and structure contributions to XLD. The observed OO signal indicates different occupation numbers for $d_{yz}$ and $d_{zx}$ orbitals and supports existence of a ferro-OO. The results are also consistent with the theoretical prediction. Moreover, we find substantial OO signal above the transition temperature, which suggests that OO fluctuation exists well above the transition temperature.

Kondo Resonance in PrTi2Al20: Photoemission spectroscopy and single-impurity Anderson model

The Kondo resonance at the Fermi level is well-established for the electronic structure of Ce (f1 electron) and Yb (f1 hole) based systems. In this work, we report complementary experimental and theoretical studies on the Kondo resonance in Pr-based f2 system, PrTi2Al20. Using Pr 3d-4f resonant photoemission spectroscopy and single impurity Anderson model (SIAM) calculations including the full multiplets of Pr ions, we show that an f2 system can also give rise to a Kondo resonance at the Fermi level. The Kondo resonance peak is experimentally observed through a final-state-multiplet dependent resonance and is reproduced with properly tuned hybridization strength in SIAM calculations.

Orbital characters of three-dimensional Fermi surfaces in Eu2-xSrxNiO4 as probed by soft-x-ray angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy

The three-dimensional Fermi surface structure of hole-doped metallic layered nickelate Eu2-xSrxNiO4 (x=1.1), an important counterpart to the isostructural superconducting cuprate La2-xSrxCuO4, is investigated by energy-dependent soft-x-ray angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. In addition to a large cylindrical hole Fermi surface analogous to the cuprates, we observe a Gamma-centered 3z2-r2-derived small electron pocket. This finding demonstrates that in the layered nickelate the 3z2-r2 band resides close to the x2-y2 one in energy. The resultant multi-band feature with varying orbital character as revealed may strongly work against the emergence of the high-temperature superconductivity.

Evidence for a correlated insulator to antiferromagnetic metal transition in CrN

We investigate the electronic structure of Chromium Nitride (CrN) across the first-order magneto-structural transition at T_N ~ 286 K. Resonant photoemission spectroscopy shows a gap in the 3d partial density of states at the Fermi level and an On-site Coulomb energy U ~ 4.5 eV, indicating strong electron-electron correlations. Bulk-sensitive high resolution (6 meV) laser photoemission reveals a clear Fermi edge indicating an antiferromagnetic metal below T_N. Hard x-ray Cr 2p core-level spectra show T-dependent changes across T_N which originate from screening due to coherent states as substantiated by cluster model calculations using the experimentally observed U. The electrical resistivity confirms an insulator above T_N (E_g ~ 70 meV) which becomes a disordered metal below T_N. The results indicate CrN transforms from a correlated insulator to an antiferromagnetic metal, coupled to the magneto-structural transition.

Nanoscale Dichotomy of Ti 3d Carriers Mediating the Ferromagnetism in Co:TiO2 Anatase Thin Films

We study the surface and bulk electronic structure of the room-temperature ferromagnet Co:TiO2 anatase films using soft and hard x-ray photoemission spectroscopy with probe sensitivities of ~1 nm and ~10 nm, respectively. We obtain direct evidence of metallic Ti$^{3+}$ states in the bulk, which get suppressed to give a surface semiconductor, thus indicating a surface-bulk dichotomy. X-ray absorption and high-sensitivity resonant photoemission spectroscopy reveal Ti$^{3+}$ electrons at the Fermi level (E$_F$) and high-spin Co$^{2+}$ electrons occurring away from E$_F$. The results show the importance of the charge neutrality condition: Co$^{2+}$ + V$_{O}$$^{2-}$ + 2Ti$^{4+}$ $\leftrightarrow$ Co$^{2+}$ + 2Ti$^{3+}$ (V$_O$ is oxygen vacancy), which gives rise to the elusive Ti 3d carriers mediating ferromagnetism via the Co 3d-O 2p-Ti 3d exchange interaction pathway of the occupied orbitals.

Orbital-dependent modifications of electronic structure across magneto-structural transition in BaFe2As2

Laser angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) is employed to investigate the temperature (T) dependence of the electronic structure in BaFe2As2 across the magneto-structural transition at TN ~ 140 K. A drastic transformation in Fermi surface (FS) shape across TN is observed, as expected by first-principles band calculations. Polarization-dependent ARPES and band calculations consistently indicate that the observed FSs at kz ~ pi in the low-T antiferromagnetic (AF) state are dominated by the Fe3dzx orbital, leading to the two-fold electronic structure. These results indicate that magneto-structural transition in BaFe2As2 accompanies orbital-dependent modifications in the electronic structure.

Strong valence fluctuation in the quantum critical heavy fermion superconductor beta-YbAlB4: A hard x-ray photoemission study

Electronic structures of the quantum critical superconductor beta-YbAlB4 and its polymorph alpha-YbAlB4 are investigated by using bulk-sensitive hard x-ray photoemission spectroscopy. From the Yb 3d core level spectra, the values of the Yb valence are estimated to be ~2.73 and ~2.75 for alpha- and beta-YbAlB4, respectively, thus providing clear evidence for valence fluctuations. The valence band spectra of these compounds also show Yb2+ peaks at the Fermi level. These observations establish an unambiguous case of a strong mixed valence at quantum criticality for the first time among heavy fermion systems, calling for a novel scheme for a quantum critical model beyond the conventional Doniach picture in beta-YbAlB4.

Anomalous State Sandwiched between Fermi Liquid and Charge Ordered Mott-Insulating Phases of Ti4O7

The Magneli phase Ti4O7 exhibits two sharp jumps in resistivity with coupled structural transitions as a function of temperature at Tc1=142 K and Tc2=154 K. We have studied electronic structure changes across the two transitions using 7 eV laser, soft x-ray and hard x-ray (HX) photoemission spectroscopy (PES). Ti 2p-3d resonant PES and HX-PES show a clear metallic Fermi-edge and mixed valency above Tc2. The low temperature phase below Tc1 shows a clear insulating gap of 100 meV. The intermediate phase between Tc1 and Tc2 indicates a pseudogap coexisting with remnant coherent states. HX-PES and complementary calculations have confirmed the coherent screening in the strongly correlated intermediate phase. The results suggest existence of a highly anomalous state sandwiched between the mixed-valent Fermi liquid and charge ordered Mott-insulating phase in Ti4O7.

Out-of-plane nesting driven spin spiral in ultrathin Fe/Cu(001) films

Epitaxial ultrathin Fe films on fcc Cu(001) exhibit a spin spiral (SS), in contrast to the ferromagnetism of bulk bcc Fe. We study the in-plane and out-of-plane Fermi surfaces (FSs) of the SS in 8 monolayer Fe/Cu(001) films using energy dependent soft x-ray momentum-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. We show that the SS originates in nested regions confined to out-of-plane FSs, which are drastically modified compared to in-plane FSs. From precise reciprocal space maps in successive zones, we obtain the associated real space compressive strain of 1.5+-0.5% along c-axis. An autocorrelation analysis quantifies the incommensurate ordering vector q=(2pi/a)(0,0,~0.86), favoring a SS and consistent with magneto-optic Kerr effect experiments. The results reveal the importance of in-plane and out-of-plane FS mapping for ultrathin films.

Angle-resolved photoemission study of cobalt oxide superconductor NaxCoO2.yH2O : Observation of the Fermi surface

Cobalt oxide superconductor NaxCoO2.yH2O is studied by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES). We report the Fermi surface (FS) topology and electronic structure near the Fermi level (EF) of NaxCoO2.yH2O. Our result indicates the presence of the hexagonal FS centered at G point, while the small pocket FSs along G-K direction are absent similar to NaxCoO2. The top of the eg' band, which is expected in band calculations to form the small pocket FSs, extends to within 20 - 50 meV below EF, more closer to EF than in NaxCoO2. We discuss its possible role in superconductivity, comparing with other experimental and theoretical results.

Evidence for mass renormalization in LaNiO$"" sub 3_: an in situ soft x-ray photoemission study of epitaxial films

We investigate the electronic structure of high-quality single-crystal LaNiO$_3$ (LNO) thin films using in situ photoemission spectroscopy (PES). The in situ high-resolution soft x-ray PES measurements on epitaxial thin films reveal the intrinsic electronic structure of LNO. We find a new sharp feature in the PES spectra crossing the Fermi level, which is derived from the correlated Ni 3$d$ $e_g$ electrons. This feature shows significant enhancement of spectral weight with decreasing temperature. From a detailed analysis of resistivity data, the enhancement of spectral weight is attributed to increasing electron correlations due to antiferromagnetic fluctuations.

Evidence for suppressed metallicity on the surface of La2-xSrxCuO4 and Nd2-xCexCuO4

Hard X-ray Photoemission spectroscopy (PES) of copper core electronic states, with a probing depth of $\sim$60 Å, is used to show that the Zhang-Rice singlet feature is present in La$_2$CuO$_4$ but is absent in Nd$_2$CuO$_4$. Hole- and electron doping in La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$ (LSCO) and Nd$_{2-x}$Ce$_x$CuO$_4$ (NCCO) result in new well-screened features which are missing in soft X-ray PES. Impurity Anderson model calculations establish metallic screening as its origin, which is strongly suppressed within 15 $\textÅ$ of the surface. Complemented with X-ray absorption spectroscopy, the small chemical-potential shift in core levels ($\sim0.2$ eV) are shown to be consistent with modifications of valence and conduction band states spanning the band gap ($\sim1$ eV) upon hole- and electron-doping in LSCO and NCCO.

Laser-excited ultrahigh-resolution photoemission spectroscopy of NaxCoO2.yH2O:Evidence for pseudogap formation

We have studied the temperature-dependent electronic structure near the Fermi level (EF) of the layered cobaltate superconductor, Na0.35CoO2.1.3H2O, and related materials, using laser-excited ultrahigh-resolution photoemission spectroscopy. We observe the formation of a pseudogap with an energy scale of ~ 20 meV in Na0.35CoO2.1.3H2O and Na0.35CoO2.0.7H2O, which is clearly absent in Na0.7CoO2. The energy scale of the pseudogap is larger than the expected value for the superconducting gap, suggesting an additional competing order parameter at low temperatures. We discuss implications of the pseudogap in relation to available transport and magnetic susceptibility results.
