Effects of chiral symmetry restoration on meson and dilepton production in relativistic heavy-ion collisions

We include effects of chiral symmetry and its restoration in the kinetic equations for baryon propagation and explore the consequences for $η$, $π^0$, $ρ$ and dilepton production in heavy-ion collisions at 1-2A GeV. Numerical calculations are performed using the GiBUU microscopic transport model supplemented by the parity-doublet model for the mean fields of the nucleon and the $N^*(1535)$ resonance. In this chiral model, a strong dropping of the Dirac mass of the $N^*(1535)$ in the high-density stage of a collision leads to a considerable enhancement in the production of this resonance as compared to the standard (non-linear) Walecka model. As the system expands, the Dirac masses of these abundant soft $N^*(1535)$ resonances gradually increase and ultimately cross the $N η$ decay threshold. As a result, an enhanced low-energy $η$ production is observed in the calculations with chiral mean fields. Comparing with TAPS data on $η$ and $π^0$ production we find that the chiral model improves the agreement for the $m_t$-spectra of $η$'s at small $m_t$ in heavy colliding systems. A similar enhancement is also observed in the soft $ρ$ production due to chiral symmetry and its partial restoration. The resulting dilepton yields at low and intermediate invariant masses are slightly enhanced due to these chiral effects which further improve the agreement between GiBUU transport simulations and HADES data for C+C at 1A GeV.

Dilepton production in microscopic transport theory with in-medium $ρ$-meson spectral function

We use the microscopic GiBUU transport model to calculate dilepton ($e^+e^-$) production in heavy-ion collisions at SIS18 energies focusing on the effect of collisional broadening of the $ρ$-meson. The collisional width of the $ρ$-meson at finite temperature and baryon density in nuclear matter is calculated on the basis of the collision integral of the GiBUU model. A systematic comparison with HADES data on dilepton production in heavy-ion collisions is performed. The collisional broadening of the $ρ$ improves the agreement between theory and experiment for the dilepton invariant-mass distributions near the $ρ$ pole mass and for the excess radiation in Au+Au at $1.23 A$ GeV. We furthermore show that some remaining underprediction of the experimental dilepton spectra in C+C at $1 A$ GeV and Au+Au at $1.23 A$ GeV at intermediate invariant masses $0.2-0.4$ GeV can be accounted for by adjusting the $pn$ bremsstrahlung cross section in a way to agree with the inclusive dilepton spectrum from $dp$ collisions at $1.25 A$ GeV.

Slow neutron production as a probe of hadron formation in high-energy $γ^*A$ reactions

Deep Inelastic Scattering (DIS) experiments at the planned Electron-Ion Collider will be affected by details of the hadron formation inside the nuclear volume. Besides semi-inclusive particle production experiments decays of the target nucleus via emission of neutrons provide an additional opportunity to probe this domain. This paper reports on the hybrid dynamical+statistical calculations of low-energy neutron production in muon- and virtual photon-induced collisions with nuclei. We confirm the conclusion that the E665 data on neutron production in $μ^-$ + Pb DIS at 470 GeV indicate a strong suppression of the final state interaction for hadrons with momenta above $\sim 1$ GeV/c. Ultraperipheral heavy-ion collisions at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) and the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) can be used to test this suppression. The calculations of the neutron multiplicity distributions and $p_t$-spectra in photon - nucleus collisions at the energies accessible at the LHC and RHIC are presented for several models of hadron formation. We argue that studies of neutron production in ultraperipheral heavy ion collisions open a new window on the small-$x$ dynamics and hadron component of the photon wave function.

Color transparency in $\bar p d \to π^- π^0 p$ reaction

We consider exclusive two-pion production in antiproton-deuteron interactions at the beam momenta around 10 GeV/c in the kinematics with large momentum transfer in the underlying hard process $\bar p n \to π^- π^0$. The calculations are performed taking into account the antiproton and pion soft rescattering on the spectator proton in the framework of the generalized eikonal approximation. We focus on the color transparency effect that is modeled by introducing the dependence of rescattering amplitudes on the relative position of the struck and spectator nucleons along the momentum of a fast particle. As a consequence of the interplay between the impulse approximation and rescattering amplitudes the nuclear transparency ratio reveals a pretty complicated behaviour as a function of the transverse momentum of the spectator proton and the relative azimuthal angle between the $π^-$-meson and the proton. Color transparency significantly suppresses rescattering amplitudes which leads to substantial modifications of the nuclear transparency ratio moving it closer to the value obtained in the impulse approximation. By performing the Monte-Carlo analysis we determine that this effect can be studied at PANDA with a reasonable statistics.

Color transparency in $π^-$-induced dilepton production on nuclei

We argue that the observation of the color transparency effect in the semiexclusive $A(π^-,l^+ l^-)$ process is important for determining whether it is possible to extract the generalized parton distributions of the nucleon from the elementary reaction $π^- p \to l^+ l^- n$ at $p_{\rm lab}=15-20$ GeV/c at small $|t|$ and large invariant mass of the dilepton pair $l^+ l^-$. Assuming that the transverse size of the pionic $q \bar q$ pair in the hard interaction point is similar to the one in the reaction $γ^* p\to π^+ n$ studied at JLab we predict large color transparency effects in the discussed kinematic range. We also suggest that the semiexclusive $ρ^0$ production in $π^-$-induced reactions in the same beam momentum region may provide new information on the dynamics of the interaction in the non-vacuum channel, while the $J/ψ$ production can be used to get information on $J/ψN$ total interaction cross section.,

Elastic scattering, polarization and absorption of relativistic antiprotons on nuclei

We perform Glauber model calculations of the antiproton-nucleus elastic and quasielastic scattering and absorption in the beam momentum range $\sim 0.5\div10$ GeV/c. A good agreement of our calculations with available LEAR data and with earlier Glauber model studies of the $\bar p A$ elastic scattering allows us to make predictions at the beam momenta of $\sim 10$ GeV/c, i.e. at the regime of the PANDA experiment at FAIR. The comparison with the proton-nucleus elastic scattering cross sections shows that the diffractive minima are much deeper in the $\bar p A$ case due to smaller absolute value of the ratio of the real-to-imaginary part of the elementary elastic amplitude. Significant polarization signal for $\bar p A$ elastic scattering at 10 GeV/c is expected. We have also revealed a strong dependence of the $\bar p A$ absorption cross section on the slope parameter of the transverse momentum dependence of the elementary $\bar pN$ amplitude. The $\bar p A$ optical potential is discussed.

Exploring QCD dynamics in medium energy $γA$ semiexclusive collisions

We demonstrate that studies of the semiexclusive large angle photon - nucleus reactions: $γ+ A\to h_1+h_2 +(A-1)^*$ with tagged photon beams of energies $6 ÷10$ GeV which can be performed in Hall D at Thomas Jefferson National Acceleration Facility (TJNAF) would allow to probe several aspects of the QCD dynamics: establish the $t$-range in which transition from soft to hard dynamics occurs, compare the strength of the interaction of various mesons and baryons with nucleons at the energies of few GeV, as well as look for the color transparency effects.

Antiproton-nucleus reactions at intermediate energies

Antiproton-induced reactions on nuclei at the beam energies from hundreds MeV up to several GeV provide an excellent opportunity to study interactions of the antiproton and secondary particles (mesons, baryons and antibaryons) with nucleons. Antiproton projectile is unique in the sense that most of annihilation particles are relatively slow in the target nucleus frame. Hence, the prehadronic effects do not much influence their interactions with the nucleons of the nuclear residue. Moreover, the particles with momenta less than about 1 GeV/c are sensitive to the nuclear mean field potentials. This paper discusses the microscopic transport calculations of the antiproton-nucleus reactions and is focused on three related problems: (i) the antiproton potential determination, (ii) possible formation of strongly bound antiproton-nucleus systems, and (iii) strangeness production.

Determination of the structure of the $X(3872)$ in $\bar p A$ collisions

Currently, the structure of the $X(3872)$ meson is unknown. Different competing models of the $c\bar c$ exotic state $X(3872)$ exist, including the possibilities that this state is either a mesonic molecule with dominating $D^0 \bar D^{*0} +c.c.$ composition, a $c \bar c q \bar q$ tetraquark, or a $c \bar c$-gluon hybrid state. It is expected that the $X(3872)$ state is rather strongly coupled to the $\bar p p$ channel and, therefore, can be produced in $\bar p p$ and $\bar pA$ collisions at PANDA. We propose to test the hypothetical molecular structure of $X(3872)$ by studying the $D$ or $\bar D^{*}$ stripping reactions on a nuclear residue.

Charmonium production in antiproton-nucleus reactions at low energies

The J/Ψ(1S) and Ψ'(2S) production near threshold in antiproton-nucleus reactions is calculated on the basis of the Glauber model. The model takes into account the antiproton (pre)absorption, proton Fermi motion, and charmonium formation length. We confirm earlier prediction that the charmonium production in $\bar pA$ collisions at $p_{lab}=3-10$ GeV/c is not influenced by formation length effects and is very well suited to determine the genuine charmonium-nucleon dissociation cross sections. The comparison is performed with the J/Ψphotoproduction at high energies, where formation length effects play a very important role. However, we demonstrate that the detailed structure of the proton and neutron density profiles has to be taken into account, if one wants to extract information on the J/ΨN dissociation cross section from J/Ψtransparency ratios. These studies are relevant for the upcoming PANDA experiment at FAIR.

Polarized $χ_{c2}$-charmonium production in antiproton-nucleus interactions

Starting from the Feynman diagram representation of multiple scattering we consider the polarized $χ_c$(1P)-charmonia production in antiproton-nucleus reactions close to the threshold ($p_{\rm lab}=5-7$ GeV/c). The rescattering and absorption of the incoming antiproton and outgoing charmonium on nucleons are taken into account, including the possibility of the elastic and nondiagonal (flavor-conserving) scattering $χ_{cJ} N \to χ_{cJ^\prime} N$, $J,J^\prime=0,1,2$. The elementary amplitudes of the latter processes are evaluated by expanding the physical $χ_c$-states in the Clebsch-Gordan series of the $c \bar c$ states with fixed values of internal orbital angular momentum ($L_z$) and spin projections on the $χ_c$ momentum axis. The total interaction cross sections of these $c \bar c$ states with nucleons have been calculated in previous works using the QCD factorization theorem and the nonrelativistic quarkonium model and turned out to be strongly $L_z$-dependent due to the transverse size difference. This directly leads to finite values of the $χ_c$-nucleon nondiagonal scattering amplitudes. We show that the $χ_{c0} N \to χ_{c2} N$ transitions significantly influence the $χ_{c2}$-production with helicity zero at small transverse momenta. This can serve as a signal in future experimental tests of the quark structure of $χ_c$-states by the PANDA collaboration at FAIR.

Formation of double-$Λ$ hypernuclei at PANDA

We study the formation of single- and double-$Λ$ hypernuclei in antiproton-induced reactions relevant for the forthcoming PANDA experiment at FAIR. We use the Giessen Boltzmann-Uehling-Uhlenbeck (GiBUU) transport model with relativistic mean-fields for the description of non-equilibrium dynamics and the statistical multifragmentation model (SMM) for fragment formation. This combined approach describes the dynamical properties of strangeness and fragments in low energy $\bar{p}$-induced reactions fairly well. We then focus on the formation of double-$Λ$ hypernuclei in high energy $\bar{p}$-nucleus collisions on a primary target including the complementary $Ξ$-induced reactions to a secondary one, as proposed by the PANDA collaboration. Our results show that a copious production of double-$Λ$ hyperfragments is possible at PANDA. In particular, we provide first theoretical estimations on the double-$Λ$ production cross section, which strongly rises with decreasing energy of the secondary $Ξ$-beam.

Kaon and hyperon production in antiproton-induced reactions on nuclei

We study the strangeness production in antiproton-nucleus collisions at the beam momenta from 200 MeV/c to 15 GeV/c within the Giessen Botzmann-Uehling-Uhlenbeck (GiBUU) transport model. The GiBUU model contains a very detailed description of the underlying antinucleon-nucleon cross sections, in-particular, of the strangeness production channels. We compare our calculations with the bubble chamber data on Λ- and K^0_S-production in antiproton-nucleus collisions and with the earlier intranuclear cascade calculations. The contributions of the various partial channels to the hyperon production are reported and systematic differences with experiment are discussed. The possible formation of the bound Λ- and ΛΛ-nucleus systems is also considered. Finally, the results on the Ξ-hyperon production are presented in view of the forthcoming experiments with antiproton beams at FAIR.

Nonequilibrium effects in hadronic fireball expansion

We consider a spherical volume of hot and dense hadronic matter (fireball) expanding into a vacuum. It is assumed that initially the fireball matter is in local thermal and chemical equilibrium with vanishing collective velocity. The time evolution of the fireball is studied in parallel within the GiBUU transport model and an ideal hydrodynamic model. The equation of state of an ideal hadronic gas is used in the hydrodynamic calculation. The same set of hadronic species is used in transport and fluid-dynamical simulations. Initial coordinates and momenta of hadrons in transport simulations have been randomly generated by using the Fermi and Bose distributions for (anti)baryons and mesons. The model results for radial profiles of densities and collective velocities of different hadronic species are compared at different times. We find that two considered models predict essential differences in time evolution of hadron abundances, which are especially pronounced for hyperonic species. This gives an evidence of a strong deviation from chemical equilibrium in expanding hadronic matter.

Strangeness production in antiproton-nucleus collisions

Antiproton annihilations on nuclei provide a very interesting way to study the behaviour of strange particles in the nuclear medium. In low energy $\bar p$ annihilations, the hyperons are produced mostly by strangeness exchange mechanisms. Thus, hyperon production in $\bar p A$ interactions is very sensitive to the properties of the antikaon-nucleon interaction in nuclear medium. Within the Giessen Boltzmann-Uehling-Uhlenbeck transport model (GiBUU), we analyse the experimental data on $Λ$ and $K^0_S$ production in $\bar p A$ collisions at $p_{\rm lab}=0.2-4$ GeV/c. A satisfactory overall agreement is reached, except for the $K^0_S$ production in $\bar p+^{20}$Ne collisions at $p_{\rm lab}=608$ MeV/c, where we obtain substantially larger $K^0_S$ production rate. We also study the $Ξ$ hyperon production, important in view of the forthcoming experiments at FAIR and J-PARC.

Transport-theoretical Description of Nuclear Reactions

In this review we first outline the basics of transport theory and its recent generalization to off-shell transport. We then present in some detail the main ingredients of any transport method using in particular the Giessen Boltzmann-Uehling-Uhlenbeck (GiBUU) implementation of this theory as an example. We discuss the potentials used, the ground state initialization and the collision term, including the in-medium modifications of the latter. The central part of this review covers applications of GiBUU to a wide class of reactions, starting from pion-induced reactions over proton and antiproton reactions on nuclei to heavy-ion collisions (up to about 30 AGeV). A major part concerns also the description of photon-, electron- and neutrino-induced reactions (in the energy range from a few 100 MeV to a few 100 GeV). For this wide class of reactions GiBUU gives an excellent description with the same physics input and the same code being used. We argue that GiBUU is an indispensable tool for any investigation of nuclear reactions in which final-state interactions play a role. Studies of pion-nucleus interactions, nuclear fragmentation, heavy ion reactions, hyper nucleus formation, hadronization, color transparency, electron-nucleus collisions and neutrino-nucleus interactions are all possible applications of GiBUU and are discussed in this article.

Breathing mode in an improved transport approach

The nuclear breathing-mode giant monopole resonance is studied within an improved relativistic Boltzmann-Uehling-Uhlenbeck (BUU) transport approach. As a new feature, the numerical treatment of ground state nuclei and their phase-space evolution is realized with the same semiclassical energy density functional. With this new method a very good stability of ground state nuclei in BUU simulations is achieved. This is important in extracting clear breathing-mode signals for the excitation energy and, in particular, for the lifetime from transport theoretical studies including mean-field and collisional effects.

Possibility of cold nuclear compression in antiproton-nucleus collisions

We study the dynamical response of the oxygen-16 nucleus to an incident antiproton using the Giessen Boltzmann-Uehling-Uhlenbeck microscopic transport model with relativistic mean fields. A special emphasis is put on the possibility of a dynamical compression of the nucleus induced by the moving antiproton. Realistic antibaryon coupling constants to the mean meson fields are chosen in accordance with empirical data. Our calculations show that an antiproton embedded in the nuclear interior with momentum less than the nucleon Fermi momentum may create a locally compressed zone in the nucleus with a maximum density of about twice the nuclear saturation density. To evaluate the probability of the nuclear compression in high-energy antiproton-nucleus collisions, we adopt a two-stage scheme. This scheme takes into account the antiproton deceleration due to the cascade of antiproton-nucleon rescatterings inside the nucleus (first stage) as well as the nuclear compression by the slow antiproton before its annihilation (second stage). With our standard model parameters, the fraction of antiproton annihilation events in the compressed zone is about $10^{-5}$ for $\bar p ^{16}$O collisions at $p_{\rm lab}=3-10$ GeV/c. Finally, possible experimental triggers aimed at selecting such events are discussed.

Transport calculations of antiproton-nucleus interactions

The Giessen Boltzmann-Uehling-Uhlenbeck transport model is extended and applied to the antiproton-nucleus interactions in a wide beam momentum range. The model calculations are compared with the experimental data on $\bar p$-absorption cross sections on nuclei with an emphasis on extraction of the real part of an antiproton optical potential. The possibility of the cold compression of a nucleus by an antiproton in-flight is also considered.

Cold compression of nuclei induced by antiprotons

On the basis of a dynamical Relativistic Mean Field (RMF) model we study the response of a nucleus on the antiproton implanted in its interior. We solve the Vlasov equation for the antiproton-nuclear system and show assuming a moderately attractive antiproton optical potential that the compressed state is formed on a rather short time scale of about 4-10 fm/c. The evolution of the system after antiproton annihilation is simulated using the Giessen Boltzmann-Uehling-Uhlenbeck (GiBUU) transport model. Finally, several sensitive observables to the antiproton annihilation in a compressed nuclear configuration are proposed, e.g. the nucleon kinetic energy spectra and the total invariant mass distributions of produced mesons.

Kaon and Pion production in relativistic heavy-ion collisions

The BUU transport model is applied to study strangeness and pion production in nucleus-nucleus collisions. Starting from proton induced reactions, we further investigate Si+Au, Au+Au and Pb+Pb collisions in the energy range between 2 and 40 A$\cdot$GeV and compare with data and with other transport calculations. The $q \bar q$ annihilation, or resonance, channel simulated by the string model in meson-nucleon collisions at $\sqrt{s} > 2$ GeV is introduced. The importance of this channel for a good description of the proton-nucleus data on $K^+$ production is demonstrated. We, furthermore, show that the meson-meson collisions contribute significantly to the $K \bar K$ production in heavy-ion collisions above 5 A GeV and improve an agreement with data on the $K^+/π^+$ ratio. Finally, we study the influence of the in-medium modifications of the FRITIOF model on the pion and kaon production.

The N N -> N Delta cross section in nuclear matter

We present calculations of the N N -> N Delta cross section in nuclear matter within the one-pion exchange model taking into account pion collectivity, vertex renormalization by the contact nuclear interactions and Dirac effective masses of the baryons due to coupling with the scalar sigma field. Introducing the Dirac effective masses leads to an in-medium reduction of the cross section. The experimental data on pion multiplicities from the collisions of Ca+Ca, Ru+Ru and Au+Au at 0.4-1.5 A GeV are well described by BUU calculations with the in-medium cross section.

Off-shell pions in Boltzmann-Uehling-Uhlenbeck transport theory

Due to large pi N --> Delta cross section a pion acquires a large width in nuclear matter. Therefore, a Delta-resonance decaying in the nuclear medium can produce far off-shell pions, which will gradually lose their virtuality while propagating to the vacuum. To describe such off-shell dynamics, we implemented a pion spectral function for finite nuclear matter density -- calculated on the basis of the Delta-hole model -- in the BUU transport approach. The pion off-shell dynamics leads to an enhancement of the low-p_t pion yields in the collisions of Au+Au at 1 A GeV.

Resonance lifetime in Boltzmann-Uehling-Uhlenbeck theory: observable consequences

Within the transport BUU theory we study the influence of the choice for the $Δ$ resonance lifetime on pion-nucleus reactions and on heavy-ion collisions at 1 A GeV. A quite small effect of these modifications on the pion absorption on nuclei is found provided that the absorption probability of the $Δ$ resonance is modified consistently. Observable effects in the case of heavy-ion collisions are demonstrated.

Quenching of resonance production in heavy-ion collisions at 1-2 A GeV

We study the pion production in heavy-ion collisions at SIS energies within the coupled resonance BUU model. The standard calculation overpredicts the pion multiplicity in the central Au+Au collision at 1 A GeV by about a factor of 2, which is interpreted as a signature for the quenching of the resonance production/absorption in nucleon-nucleon collisions at high nuclear density. Results of the calculations taking into account a specific form of quenching are presented for pion spectra from light and heavy systems as well as for the pion in-plane and out-of-plane flow.

Squeeze-out of nuclear matter in peripheral heavy-ion collisions and momentum-dependent effective interactions

We perform a systematic study of in-plane and out-of-plane proton and neutron flow from nucleus-nucleus collisions within the BUU transport approach employing different parameter sets for the mean-field potentials that can be characterized by the nuclear incompressibility and the stiffness of the momentum-dependent potential. We find that a simultaneous description of the experimental data from the BEVALAC and the SIS on both the nucleon squeeze-out $v_2$ and the in-plane flow $F$ at beam energies $E_{lab} = 0.15 ÷2$ AGeV requires a mean field with strong momentum dependence, i.e. an effective Landau mass $m^* \simeq 0.68 m_0$ at normal nuclear matter density $ρ_0=0.17$ fm$^{-3}$, where $m_0=0.938$ GeV is the bare nucleon mass. Some experimental data on the squeeze-out require an even stiffer momentum dependence ($m^* \approx 0.62 m_0$). All systems investigated are found to be compatible with $m^*/m_0 = 0.65 \pm 0.03$.

Strongly damped nuclear collisions: zero or first sound ?

The relaxation of the collective quadrupole motion in the initial stage of a central heavy ion collision at beam energies $E_{lab}=5\div20$ AMeV is studied within a microscopic kinetic transport model. The damping rate is shown to be a non-monotonic function of E_{lab} for a given pair of colliding nuclei. This fact is interpreted as a manifestation of the zero-to-first sound transition in a finite nuclear system.

(p,π^+-) correlations in central heavy-ion collisions at 1-2 AGeV

The proton - charged pion correlated emission is studied in the reactions Au (1.06 AGeV) + Au, Ni (1.06 and 1.93 AGeV) + Ni and Ni (1.97 AGeV) + Cu within the BUU approach. The associated invariant mass distributions are shifted to smaller energies with respect to the free $Δ(1232)$ mass distribution due to kinematical reasons. We find that the existing and partly conflicting experimental data do not allow to draw definite conclusions on the in-medium modification of the $Δ(1232)$.

Multifragmentation of charge asymmetric nuclear systems

The multifragmentation of excited spherical nuclear sources with various N/Z ratios and fixed mass number is studied within dynamical and statistical models. The dynamical model treats the multifragmentation process as a final stage of the growth of density fluctuations in unstable expanding nuclear matter. The statistical model makes a choice of the final multifragment configuration according to its statistical weight at a global thermal equilibrium. Similarities and differences in the predictions of the two models on the isotopic composition of the produced fragments are presented and the most sensitive observable characteristics are discussed.

Isovector Vibrations in Nuclear Matter at Finite Temperature

We consider the propagation and damping of isovector excitations in heated nuclear matter within the Landau Fermi-liquid theory. Results obtained for nuclear matter are applied to calculate the Giant Dipole Resonance (GDR) at finite temperature in heavy spherical nuclei within Steinwedel and Jensen model. The centroid energy of the GDR slightly decreases with increasing temperature and the width increases as $T^2$ for temperatures $T < 5$ MeV in agreement with recent experimental data for GDR in $^{208}$Pb and $^{120}$Sn. The validity of the method for other Fermi fluids is finally suggested.
