Dilepton Decay of Low-mass $ρ$ Mesons

The HADES collaboration has extracted dilepton mass spectra for $π^-$ induced reactions on the proton from a comparison of data taken on C and CH$_2$ targets. The spectra were interpreted in terms of different versions of vector meson dominance. Here we present results obtained from the theory and generator GiBUU. We first check the subtraction procedure used and then discuss the obtained mass spectra for the proton target. We point out that any conclusions on the version of VMD requires the knowledge of the $ρ$ spectral function in the interesting mass region.

Dilepton production in microscopic transport theory with in-medium $ρ$-meson spectral function

We use the microscopic GiBUU transport model to calculate dilepton ($e^+e^-$) production in heavy-ion collisions at SIS18 energies focusing on the effect of collisional broadening of the $ρ$-meson. The collisional width of the $ρ$-meson at finite temperature and baryon density in nuclear matter is calculated on the basis of the collision integral of the GiBUU model. A systematic comparison with HADES data on dilepton production in heavy-ion collisions is performed. The collisional broadening of the $ρ$ improves the agreement between theory and experiment for the dilepton invariant-mass distributions near the $ρ$ pole mass and for the excess radiation in Au+Au at $1.23 A$ GeV. We furthermore show that some remaining underprediction of the experimental dilepton spectra in C+C at $1 A$ GeV and Au+Au at $1.23 A$ GeV at intermediate invariant masses $0.2-0.4$ GeV can be accounted for by adjusting the $pn$ bremsstrahlung cross section in a way to agree with the inclusive dilepton spectrum from $dp$ collisions at $1.25 A$ GeV.

Comment on "Comparison of optical potential for nucleons and $Δ$ resonances" by Arie Bodek and Tejin Cai

In \cite{Bodek:2020wbk} Bodek and Cai have tried to extract the potentials for nucleons and $Δ$ resonances from electron-nucleus inclusive scattering data. They find that the $Δ$ potential is considerably more attractive than that of the nucleons. This result is at variance with the results of a multitude of analyses of (e,A) and ($γA$) interactions, performed about 35 years ago.

$2π$ production in the Giessen coupled-channel model

We present a coupled-channel Lagrangian approach (GiM) to describe the $πN \to πN$, $2πN$ scattering in the resonance energy region. The $2πN$ production has been significantly improved by using the isobar approximation with $σN$ and $πΔ(1232)$ in the intermediate state. The three-body unitarity is maintained up to interference pattern between the isobar subchannels. The scattering amplitudes are obtained as a solution of the Bethe-Salpeter equation in the $K$ matrix approximation. As a first application we perform a partial wave analysis of the $πN \to πN$, $π^0π^0 N$ reactions in the Roper resonance region. We obtain $R_{σN}(1440)=27^{+4}_{-9}$\,\% and $R_{σN}(1440)=12^{+5}_{-3}$\,\% for the $σN$ and $πΔ$ decay branching ratios of $N^*(1440)$ respectively. The extracted $πN$ inelasticities and reaction amplitudes are consistent with the results from other groups.

Mass dependence and isospin dependence of short-range correlated pairs

The target-mass number dependence of nucleon-nucleon pairs with short-range correlations is explored in a physically transparent geometrical model within a zero-range approximation. The observed $A$ dependence of 2-nucleon ejection cross sections in $(e,e')$ reactions is found to reflect the mass dependence of nuclear density distributions. A parametrization of this $A$ dependence is given. The $A$ dependence of proton-proton vs.\ proton-neutron pairs relative to $^{12}$C is also analyzed in this model. It can be understood using simple combinatorics without any additional isospin dependence.

Neutrino-Induced Reactions on Nuclei

Background: Long-baseline experiments such as the planned Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE) require theoretical descriptions of the complete event in a neutrino-nucleus reaction. Since nuclear targets are used this requires a good understanding of neutrino-nucleus interactions. Purpose: Develop a consistent theory and code framework for the description of lepton-nucleus interactions that can be used to describe not only inclusive cross sections, but also the complete final state of the reaction. Methods: The Giessen-Boltzmann-Uehling-Uhlenbeck (GiBUU) implementation of quantum-kinetic transport theory is used, with improvements in its treatment of the nuclear ground state and of 2p2h interactions. For the latter an empirical structure function from electron scattering data is used as a basis. Results: Results for electron-induced inclusive cross sections are given as a necessary check for the overall quality of this approach. The calculated neutrino-induced inclusive double-differential cross sections show good agreement with data from neutrino- and antineutrino reactions for different neutrino flavors at MiniBooNE and T2K. Inclusive double-differential cross sections for MicroBooNE, NOvA, MINERvA and LBNF/DUNE are given. Conclusions: Based on the GiBUU model of lepton-nucleus descriptions a good theoretical description of inclusive electron-, neutrino- and antineutrino-nucleus data over a wide range of energies, different neutrino flavors and different experiments is now possible. Since no tuning is involved this theory and code should be reliable also for new energy regimes and target masses. \end{description}

Rôle of the pion electromagnetic form factor in the $Δ(1232) \to γ^\ast N$ timelike transition

The $Δ(1232) \to γ^\ast N$ magnetic dipole form factor ($G_M^\ast$) is described here within a new covariant model that combines the valence quark core together with the pion cloud contributions. The pion cloud term is parameterized by two terms: one connected to the pion electromagnetic form factor, the other to the photon interaction with intermediate baryon states. The model can be used in studies of pp and heavy ion collisions. In the timelike region this new model improves the results obtained with a constant form factor model fixed at its value at zero momentum transfer. At the same time, and in contrast to the Iachello model, this new model predicts a peak for the transition form factor at the expected position, i.e. at the $ρ$ mass pole. We calculate the decay of the $Δ\to γN$ transition, the Dalitz decay ($Δ\to e^+ e^- N$), and the $Δ$ mass distribution function. The impact of the model on dilepton spectra in pp collisions is also discussed.

Many-Body Interactions of Neutrinos with Nuclei - Observables

Background: The total inclusive cross sections obtained for quasielastic (QE) scattering in the Mini Booster Neutrino Experiment (MiniBooNE) are significantly larger than those calculated by all models based on the impulse approximation and using the world average value for the axial mass of $M_A \approx 1 \GeV$. This discrepancy has led to various, quite different explanations in terms of increased axial masses, changes in the functional form of the axial form factor, increased vector strength in nuclei, and initial two-particle interactions. This is disconcerting since the neutrino energy reconstruction depends on the reaction mechanism. Purpose: We investigate whether exclusive observables, such as nucleon knock-out, can be used to distinguish between the various proposed reaction mechanisms. We determine the influence of 2p-2h excitations on the energy reconstruction. Method: We use the Giessen Boltzmann--Uehling--Uhlenbeck (GiBUU) model to predict numbers and spectra of knock-out nucleons. The model is extended by incorporating a simple, but realistic treatment of initial 2p-2h excitations. Results: We show numbers and spectra of knock-out nucleons and show their sensitivity to the presence of 2p-2h initial excitations. We also discuss the influence of 2p-2h excitations on the neutrino energy reconstruction. Conclusions: 2p-2h excitations do lead to an increase in the number $n$ of knock-out nucleons for $n \ge 2$ while only the $n=1$ knock-out remains a clean signal of true QE scattering. The spectra of knock-out nucleons do also change, but their qualitative shape remains as before. In the energy reconstruction 2p-2h interactions lead to a downward shift of the reconstructed energy; this effect of 2p-2h excitations disappears at higher energies because the 2p-2h influence is spread out over a wider energy range.

Reaction Mechanisms at MINER$ν$A

The MINER$ν$A experiment investigates neutrino interactions with nucleons needed for an understanding of electroweak interactions of hadrons. Since nuclear targets are being used many-body effects may affect the extracted cross sections and the energy reconstruction. The latter is essential for the extraction of neutrino oscillation properties. We investigate the influence of nuclear effects on neutrino interaction cross sections and make predictions for charged current quasielastic (QE) scattering, nucleon-knock-out and pion- and kaon-production on a CH target. The Giessen Boltzmann--Uehling--Uhlenbeck (GiBUU) model is used for the description of neutrino-nucleus reactions. Integrated and differential cross sections for inclusive neutrino scattering, QE processes and particle production for the MINER$ν$A neutrino flux are calculated. The influence of final state interactions on the identification of these processes is discussed. In particular, energy and $Q^2$ reconstruction for the MINER$ν$A flux are critically examined. The $Q^2$ dependence of the inclusive cross sections is found to be sensitive to the energy reconstruction. Cut-offs in flux distributions have a large effect. Final state interactions affect the pion kinetic energy spectra significantly and increase the kaon cross sections by cross feeding from other channels.

Eta-meson production in the resonance energy region

We perform an updated coupled-channel analysis of eta-meson production including all recent photoproduction data on the proton. The dip observed in the differential cross sections at c.m. energies W=1.68 GeV is explained by destructive interference between the $S_{11}(1535)$ and $S_{11}(1560)$ states. The effect from $P_{11}(1710)$ is found to be small but still important to reproduce the correct shape of the differential cross section. For the $π^- N \to ηN$ scattering we suggest a reaction mechanism in terms of the $S_{11}(1535)$, $S_{11}(1560)$, and $P_{11}(1710)$ states. Our conclusion on the importance of the $S_{11}(1535)$, $S_{11}(1560)$, and $P_{11}(1710)$ resonances in the eta-production reactions is in line with our previous results. No strong indication for a narrow state with a width of 15 MeV and the mass of 1680 MeV is found in the analysis. $ηN$ scattering length is extracted and discussed.

GiBUU and Shallow Inelastic Scattering

In this talk we shortly describe the physics contents of the GiBUU transport code, used to describe lepton scattering off nuclei. Particular attention will be given to validation of the GiBUU in pion-, electron- and photon-induced reactions, which serve as a benchmark for neutrino-induced ones. We mainly concentrate on those properties of benchmark reactions, which are relevant to the region of Shallow Inelastic Scattering (SIS). Our results in this region are presented for integrated and differential cross sections. Comparison with recent MINOS inclusive data, as well as predictions for the differential cross sections measurable in \Minerva and \Nova experiments are made.

Pion production in the T2K experiment

Background: Pion production gives information on the axial form factors of nucleon resonances. It also introduces a noticeable background to quasi-elastic measurements on nuclear targets and thus has a significant impact on precision studies of neutrino oscillation parameters. Purpose: To clarify neutrino-induced pion production on nucleons and nuclei. Method: The Giessen Boltzmann--Uehling--Uhlenbeck (GiBUU) model is used for the description of neutrino-nucleus reactions. Results: Theoretical results for differential cross sections for the T2K neutrino flux at the ND280 detector and integrated cross sections as a function of neutrino energy are given. Two sets of pion production data on elementary targets are used as inputs to obtain limits for pion production in neutrino-nucleus reactions. Conclusions: Pion production in the T2K ND280 detector can help to narrow down the uncertainties in the elementary pion production cross sections. It can also give valuable information on the nucleon-Delta axial form factor.

Energy reconstruction in quasielastic scattering in the MiniBooNE and T2K experiments

Neutrino oscillation probabilities, which are being measured in long-baseline experiments, depend on neutrino energy. The energy in a neutrino beam, however, is broadly smeared so that the neutrino energy in a particular event is not directly known, but must be reconstructed from final state properties. In this paper we investigate the contributions from different reaction mechanisms on the energy-reconstruction method widely used in long-baseline neutrino experiments. Difference between the true-QE and QE-like cross sections in MiniBooNE experiment is investigated in details. It is shown, that fake QE-like events lead to significant distortions in neutrino energy reconstruction. Flux-folded and unfolded cross sections for QE-like scattering are calculated as functions of both true and reconstructed energies. Flux-folded momentum transfer distributions are calculated as functions of both true and reconstructed momentum transfer. Distributions versus reconstructed values are compared with the experimental data. Also presented are the conditional probability densities of finding a true energy for a given reconstructed energy. It is shown, how the energy reconstruction procedure influences the measurement of oscillation parameters in T2K experiment. For the reconstruction procedure based on quasielastic (QE) kinematics, all other reaction channels beside true-QE scattering show a shift of the reconstructed energy towards lower values as compared to the true energy. On average in the MiniBooNE and T2K experiments the shift is 100 - 200 MeV and depends on energy. The oscillation signals are similarly affected. These uncertainties may limit the extraction of a CP violating phase from an oscillation result.

Formation of double-$Λ$ hypernuclei at PANDA

We study the formation of single- and double-$Λ$ hypernuclei in antiproton-induced reactions relevant for the forthcoming PANDA experiment at FAIR. We use the Giessen Boltzmann-Uehling-Uhlenbeck (GiBUU) transport model with relativistic mean-fields for the description of non-equilibrium dynamics and the statistical multifragmentation model (SMM) for fragment formation. This combined approach describes the dynamical properties of strangeness and fragments in low energy $\bar{p}$-induced reactions fairly well. We then focus on the formation of double-$Λ$ hypernuclei in high energy $\bar{p}$-nucleus collisions on a primary target including the complementary $Ξ$-induced reactions to a secondary one, as proposed by the PANDA collaboration. Our results show that a copious production of double-$Λ$ hyperfragments is possible at PANDA. In particular, we provide first theoretical estimations on the double-$Λ$ production cross section, which strongly rises with decreasing energy of the secondary $Ξ$-beam.

Kaon and hyperon production in antiproton-induced reactions on nuclei

We study the strangeness production in antiproton-nucleus collisions at the beam momenta from 200 MeV/c to 15 GeV/c within the Giessen Botzmann-Uehling-Uhlenbeck (GiBUU) transport model. The GiBUU model contains a very detailed description of the underlying antinucleon-nucleon cross sections, in-particular, of the strangeness production channels. We compare our calculations with the bubble chamber data on Λ- and K^0_S-production in antiproton-nucleus collisions and with the earlier intranuclear cascade calculations. The contributions of the various partial channels to the hyperon production are reported and systematic differences with experiment are discussed. The possible formation of the bound Λ- and ΛΛ-nucleus systems is also considered. Finally, the results on the Ξ-hyperon production are presented in view of the forthcoming experiments with antiproton beams at FAIR.

Neutrino- and antineutrino-induced reactions with nuclei between 1 and 50 GeV

Background: Nuclear effects can have a significant impact on neutrino-nucleus interactions. In particular, data from neutrino experiments with broad energy distributions require complex theoretical models that are able to take all the relevant channels into account as well as incorporate nuclear effects in both initial and final-state interactions. Purpose: We investigate neutrino and antineutrino scattering on iron and carbon in the energy range from 1 to 30 GeV, which is relevant to current and coming experiments (MINOS, NOvA, and Minerva). Method: The Giessen Boltzmann--Uehling--Uhlenbeck (GiBUU) model, which implements all reaction channels relevant for neutrino energies under consideration, is used for an investigation of neutrino-nucleus reactions. Results: Our calculations are compared with the recent NOMAD and MINOS data for the integrated inclusive cross sections. Predictions are made for the differential cross sections for semiinclusive final states (pions, kaons, and nucleons) for the MINOS and NOvA beams. Conclusions: Nuclear effects in the initial-state interactions may slightly change the inclusive nuclear cross section as compared to the free nucleon ones. Final-state interactions noticeably change the spectra of the outgoing hadrons. In the Minerva and NOvA experiments these effects should be visible in the kinetic energy distributions of the final pions, kaons, and nucleons. Secondary interactions play an important role for strangeness production.

Neutrino-nucleus interactions

Interactions of neutrinos with nuclei in the energy ranges relevant for the MiniBooNE, T2K, NO$ν$A, MINER$ν$A and MINOS experiments are discussed. It is stressed that any theoretical treatment must involve all the relevant reaction mechanisms: quasielastic scattering, pion production and DIS. In addition, also many-body interactions play a role. In this talk we show how a misidentification of the reaction mechanism can affect the energy reconstruction. We also discuss how the newly measured pion production cross sections, as reported recently by the MiniBooNE collaboration, can be related to the old cross sections obtained on elementary targets. The MiniBooNE data seem to be compatible only with the old BNL data. Even then crucial features of the nucleon-pion-Delta interaction are missing in the experimental pion kinetic energy spectra. We also discuss the meson production processes at the higher energies of the NO$ν$A, MINER$ν$A and MINOS experiments. Here final state interactions make it impossible to gain knowledge about the elementary reaction amplitudes. Finally, we briefly explore the problems due to inaccuracies in the energy reconstruction that LBL experiments face in their extraction of oscillation parameters.

Strangeness production in antiproton-nucleus collisions

Antiproton annihilations on nuclei provide a very interesting way to study the behaviour of strange particles in the nuclear medium. In low energy $\bar p$ annihilations, the hyperons are produced mostly by strangeness exchange mechanisms. Thus, hyperon production in $\bar p A$ interactions is very sensitive to the properties of the antikaon-nucleon interaction in nuclear medium. Within the Giessen Boltzmann-Uehling-Uhlenbeck transport model (GiBUU), we analyse the experimental data on $Λ$ and $K^0_S$ production in $\bar p A$ collisions at $p_{\rm lab}=0.2-4$ GeV/c. A satisfactory overall agreement is reached, except for the $K^0_S$ production in $\bar p+^{20}$Ne collisions at $p_{\rm lab}=608$ MeV/c, where we obtain substantially larger $K^0_S$ production rate. We also study the $Ξ$ hyperon production, important in view of the forthcoming experiments at FAIR and J-PARC.

Transport-theoretical Description of Nuclear Reactions

In this review we first outline the basics of transport theory and its recent generalization to off-shell transport. We then present in some detail the main ingredients of any transport method using in particular the Giessen Boltzmann-Uehling-Uhlenbeck (GiBUU) implementation of this theory as an example. We discuss the potentials used, the ground state initialization and the collision term, including the in-medium modifications of the latter. The central part of this review covers applications of GiBUU to a wide class of reactions, starting from pion-induced reactions over proton and antiproton reactions on nuclei to heavy-ion collisions (up to about 30 AGeV). A major part concerns also the description of photon-, electron- and neutrino-induced reactions (in the energy range from a few 100 MeV to a few 100 GeV). For this wide class of reactions GiBUU gives an excellent description with the same physics input and the same code being used. We argue that GiBUU is an indispensable tool for any investigation of nuclear reactions in which final-state interactions play a role. Studies of pion-nucleus interactions, nuclear fragmentation, heavy ion reactions, hyper nucleus formation, hadronization, color transparency, electron-nucleus collisions and neutrino-nucleus interactions are all possible applications of GiBUU and are discussed in this article.

Gluons and the quark sea at high energies: distributions, polarization, tomography

This report is based on a ten-week program on "Gluons and the quark sea at high-energies", which took place at the Institute for Nuclear Theory in Seattle in Fall 2010. The principal aim of the program was to develop and sharpen the science case for an Electron-Ion Collider (EIC), a facility that will be able to collide electrons and positrons with polarized protons and with light to heavy nuclei at high energies, offering unprecedented possibilities for in-depth studies of quantum chromodynamics. This report is organized around four major themes: i) the spin and flavor structure of the proton, ii) three-dimensional structure of nucleons and nuclei in momentum and configuration space, iii) QCD matter in nuclei, and iv) Electroweak physics and the search for physics beyond the Standard Model. Beginning with an executive summary, the report contains tables of key measurements, chapter overviews for each of the major scientific themes, and detailed individual contributions on various aspects of the scientific opportunities presented by an EIC.

The $ω$ line shape does not show any significant difference between the LH_2 and the Nb targets. Breathing mode in an improved transport approach

The nuclear breathing-mode giant monopole resonance is studied within an improved relativistic Boltzmann-Uehling-Uhlenbeck (BUU) transport approach. As a new feature, the numerical treatment of ground state nuclei and their phase-space evolution is realized with the same semiclassical energy density functional. With this new method a very good stability of ground state nuclei in BUU simulations is achieved. This is important in extracting clear breathing-mode signals for the excitation energy and, in particular, for the lifetime from transport theoretical studies including mean-field and collisional effects.

Color transparency in hadronic attenuation of rho0 mesons

Ongoing experiments at JLAB investigate the nuclear transparency in exclusive rho0(770) electroproduction off nuclei. In this work we present transport model predictions for the attenuation of rho0s in nuclei and for color transparency (CT) effects as observable at CLAS with a 5 GeV electron beam energy. A full event simulation presented here permits to study the impact of actual experimental acceptance conditions and kinematical cuts. The exclusive (e,e'rho0) cross section off nucleons is described by diffractive and color string breaking mechanisms extended toward the onset of the deep inelastic regime. Different hadronization and CT scenarios are compared. We show that a detailed analysis of elementary cross section, nuclear effects and experimental cuts is needed to reveal the early onset of rho0-CT at present JLAB energies.

Dilepton production in nucleon-nucleon collisions around 1 GeV/nucleon: a theoretical update

We present a fully relativistic and gauge invariant framework for calculating the cross sections of dilepton production in nucleon-nucleon (NN) collisions which is based on the meson-exchange approximation for the NN scattering amplitudes. Predictions of our model are compared with those of other covariant models that have been used to describe this reaction. We discuss the comparison of our calculations with the old DLS and the recent HADES data.

Dilepton production in proton-proton and quasifree proton-neutron reactions at 1.25 GeV

We investigate the pp --> pp e+e- and quasifree pn --> pn e+e- reactions within an effective Lagrangian model at the laboratory kinetic energy of 1.25 GeV for which experimental data have recently been reported by the HADES Collaboration. The model uses a meson-exchange approximation to describe the initial nucleon-nucleon (NN) scattering. Contributions to the reaction amplitudes are included from the NN bremsstrahlung as well as from the excitation, propagation and radiative decay of the Delta(1230) isobar state. It is found that the HADES data on the e+e- invariant mass distribution in the pp --> pp e+e- reaction are reproduced excellently by our model where the Delta isobar term dominates the spectrum. However, the quasifree pn --> pn e+e- cross sections are underpredicted in the invariant mass region of 0.40 - 0.55 GeV/c^2 even after including contributions of the eta Dalitz decay and the subthreshold production and decay of the rho^0 meson via the baryonic resonance N*(1520). In the case of the quasifree pn --> pn e+e- reaction, a strong sensitivity to the pion electromagnetic form factor is observed which helps to bring the calculated cross sections closer to the data in the higher dilepton mass region.

Neutrino-nucleus interactions in the T2K experiment

We present a study of neutrino-nucleus interactions at the T2K experiment based on the GiBUU transport model. The aim of T2K is to measure $ν_e$ appearance and $θ_{13}$, but it will also be able to do a precise measurement of $ν_μ$ disappearance. The former requires a good understanding of $π^0$ production while the latter is closely connected with a good understanding of quasielastic scattering. For both processes we investigate the influence of nuclear effects and particular final-state interactions on the expected event rates taking into account the T2K detector setup.

Neutrino-nucleus scattering reexamined: Quasielastic scattering and pion production entanglement and implications for neutrino energy reconstruction

We apply the GiBUU model to questions relevant for current and future neutrino long-baseline experiments, we address in particular the relevance of charged-current reactions for neutrino disappearance experiments. A correct identification of charged-current quasielastic (CCQE) events - which is the signal channel in oscillation experiments - is relevant for the neutrino energy reconstruction and thus for the oscillation result. We show that about 20% of the quasielastic cross section is misidentified in present-day experiments and has to be corrected for by means of event generators. Furthermore, we show that also a significant part of 1pi+ (> 40%) events is misidentified as CCQE mainly caused by the pion absorption in the nucleus. We also discuss the dependence of both of these numbers on experimental detection thresholds. We further investigate the influence of final-state interactions on the neutrino energy reconstruction.

Formation of hypernuclei in high energy reactions within a covariant transport model

We investigate the formation of fragments with strangeness degrees of freedom in proton- and heavy-ion-induced reactions at high relativistic energies. The model used is a combination of a dynamical transport model and a statistical approach of fragment formation. We discuss in detail the applicability and limitations of such a hybrid model by comparing data on spectator fragmentation at relativistic $SIS/GSI$-energies. The theoretical results are analyzed in terms of spectator fragmentation with strangeness degrees of freedom such as the production of single-$Λ-{}^{3,4,5}He$ hypernuclei. We provide theoretical estimates on the spectra and on inclusive cross sections of light hypernuclei, which could be helpful for future experiments on hypernuclear physics at the new GSI- and J-PARC-facilities.

Hadronic transport approach to neutrino nucleus scattering: the Giessen BUU model and its validation

We present the GiBUU model for neutrino nucleus scattering: assuming impulse approximation, this reaction is treated as a two step process. In the initial state step, the neutrinos interact with bound nucleons. In the final state step, the outgoing particles of the initial reaction are propagated through the nucleus and undergo final state interactions. In this contribution, we focus on the validation of the initial and final state interaction treatment in GiBUU using experimental data for pion-nucleus, photon-nucleus and electron-nucleus scattering.

Neutrino-induced coherent pion production off nuclei reexamined

It is pointed out that so far all theoretical estimates of coherent pion production off nuclei induced by neutrinos rely on the 'local approximation' well known in photonuclear physics. The effects of dropping this approximation are discussed. It is found that in a plane wave approximation for the pion the local approximation overestimates the coherent neutrino-induced pion production on nuclei.

Pion production in neutrino interactions with nuclei

Neutrino-induced pion production on nuclear targets is the major inelastic channel in all present-day neutrino-oscillation experiments. It has to be understood quantitatively in order to be able to reconstruct the neutrino-energy at experiments such as MiniBooNE or K2K and T2K. We report here results of cross section calculations for both this channel and for quasielastic scattering within the semiclassical GiBUU method. This methods contains scattering, both elastic and inelastic, absorption and side-feeding of channels all in a unitary, common theoretical framework and code. We find that charged current quasielastic scattering (CCQE) and $1 π$ production are closely entangled in actual experiments, due to final state interactions of the scattered nucleons on one hand and of the $Δ$ resonances and pions, on the other hand. We discuss the uncertainties in the elementary pion production cross sections from ANL and BNL. We find the surprising result that the recent $1 π$ production cross section data from MiniBooNE are well described by calculations without any FSI. For higher energies we study the validity of the Bloom-Gilman quark-hadron duality for both electron- and neutrino-induced reactions. While this duality holds quite well for nucleon targets, for nuclear targets the average resonance contributions to the structure function $F_2$ are always lower than the DIS values. This result indicates a significant impact of nuclear effects on observables, reducing the cross section and structure functions by at least 30-40% and changing the form of various distributions.

Quasielastic Scattering at MiniBooNE Energies

We present our description of neutrino induced charged current quasielastic scattering (CCQE) in nuclei at energies relevant for the MiniBooNE experiment. In our framework, the nucleons, with initial momentum distributions according to the Local Fermi Gas model, move in a density- and momentum-dependent mean field potential. The broadening of the outgoing nucleons due to nucleon-nucleon interactions is taken into account by spectral functions. Long range (RPA) correlations renormalizing the electroweak strength in the medium are also incorporated. The background from resonance excitation events that do not lead to pions in the final state is also predicted by propagating the outgoing hadrons with the Giessen semiclassical BUU model in coupled channels (GiBUU). We achieve a good description of the shape of the CCQE Q2 distribution extracted from data by MiniBooNE, thanks to the inclusion of RPA correlations, but underestimate the integrated cross section when the standard value of MA = 1 GeV is used. Possible reasons for this mismatch are discussed.

Spin-5/2 fields in hadron physics

We show that the Lagrangian of the free spin-5/2 field in the spinor-tensor representation with the auxiliary spinor field depends on the three arbitrary parameters. The first two parameters are associated with the spin-3/2 and -1/2 sector of the theory while the latter one is related to the auxiliary degrees of freedom. We derive a corresponding propagator of the system which represents (2 x 2) matrix in the $(ψ_{μν},ξ)$ space. The diagonal terms stand for the propagation of the spin-5/2 and auxiliary fields whereas the non-diagonal ones correspond to the $ψ_{μν}-ξ$ mixing. The resulting spin-5/2 propagator contains non-pole contributions coming from the spin-3/2 and -1/2 sector of the spinor-tensor representation. A general form of the interaction vertex involving spin-5/2 field is discussed on the example of the $πN N^*_{5/2}$ coupling. It is demonstrated that lower spin degrees of freedom can be removed from the theory by using higher order derivative coupling.

Light Vector Mesons in the Nuclear Medium

The light vector mesons ($ρ$, $ω$, and $ϕ$) were produced in deuterium, carbon, titanium, and iron targets in a search for possible in-medium modifications to the properties of the $ρ$ meson at normal nuclear densities and zero temperature. The vector mesons were detected with the CEBAF Large Acceptance Spectrometer (CLAS) via their decays to $e^{+}e^{-}$. The rare leptonic decay was chosen to reduce final-state interactions. A combinatorial background was subtracted from the invariant mass spectra using a well-established event-mixing technique. The $ρ$ meson mass spectrum was extracted after the $ω$ and $ϕ$ signals were removed in a nearly model-independent way. Comparisons were made between the $ρ$ mass spectra from the heavy targets ($A > 2$) with the mass spectrum extracted from the deuterium target. With respect to the $ρ$-meson mass, we obtain a small shift compatible with zero. Also, we measure widths consistent with standard nuclear many-body effects such as collisional broadening and Fermi motion.

Production of fragments with and without strangeness within a combined BUU+SMM approach

The formation of hypernuclei in hadron-induced reactions and in heavy-ion collisions within a combination of a covariant transport model and a statistical fragmentation approach is investigated. We study the applicability and limitations of such a hybrid approach by comparing fragmentation data in heavy-ion collisions and proton induced reactions. It turns out that the combined approach describes fairly well multiplicities and momentum spectra of fragments. We thus extend the model by including strangeness degrees of freedom in the fragmentation process, modeled by a phase-space coalescence method. We provide theoretical predictions on spectra and on inclusive cross sections of light hypernuclei for the future experiments on hypernuclear physics at the new GSI facility.

Neutrino-induced coherent pion production

We have investigated the neutrino induced coherent pion production reaction at the energies of interest for recent experiments like K2K and MiniBooNE. The model includes pion, nucleon and the Delta(1232) resonance. Medium effects in the production mechanism and the distortion of the pion wave function are taken into account. We find a strong reduction of the cross section due to these effects and also substantial modifications in the energy distributions of the final pion. The sensitivity of the results on the axial N-Delta coupling C5A(0) and the coherent fraction in neutral-current pi0 production are discussed.

Search for medium modification of the $ρ$ meson

The photoproduction of vector mesons on various nuclei has been studied using the CEBAF Large Acceptance Spectrometer (CLAS) at Jefferson Laboratory. The vector mesons, $ρ$, $ω$, and $ϕ$, are observed via their decay to $e^+e^-$, in order to reduce the effects of final state interactions in the nucleus. Of particular interest are possible in-medium effects on the properties of the $ρ$ meson. The $ρ$ spectral function is extracted from the data on various nuclei, carbon, iron, and titanium, and compared to the spectrum from liquid deuterium, which is relatively free of nuclear effects. We observe no significant mass shift for the $ρ$ meson; however, there is some widening of the resonance in titanium and iron, which is consistent with expected collisional broadening.

Coupled-channel analysis of the $ω$-meson production in $πN$ and $γN$ reactions for c.m. energies up to 2 GeV

The pion- and photon induced reactions for the final states $γN$, $πN$, $2πN$, $ηN$, and $ωN$ are studied within a coupled-channel effective Lagrangian approach in the energy region from the pion threshold up to 2 GeV. To investigate the role of the nucleon resonances in the different reactions we include all known states with spin-$\foh$,-$\fth$, and -$\ffh$ and masses below 2 GeV. We find a strong contribution from the $D_{15}(1675)$ resonance to the $πN \to ωN$ reaction. While the $F_{15}(1680)$ state only slightly influences the $ω$ meson production in the $πN$ scattering its role is enhanced in the $ω$ photoproduction due to the large electromagnetic coupling of this resonance. We predict the beam asymmetry $Σ_X$ to be a negative in the $γp \to ωp$ reaction near to the threshold. Above the 1.85 GeV the asymmetry is found to change its sign and becomes positive at forward directions. The presented findings can be experimentally tested at GRAAL, CLAS, and CB-ELSA facilities.

Kaon and Pion production in relativistic heavy-ion collisions

The BUU transport model is applied to study strangeness and pion production in nucleus-nucleus collisions. Starting from proton induced reactions, we further investigate Si+Au, Au+Au and Pb+Pb collisions in the energy range between 2 and 40 A$\cdot$GeV and compare with data and with other transport calculations. The $q \bar q$ annihilation, or resonance, channel simulated by the string model in meson-nucleon collisions at $\sqrt{s} > 2$ GeV is introduced. The importance of this channel for a good description of the proton-nucleus data on $K^+$ production is demonstrated. We, furthermore, show that the meson-meson collisions contribute significantly to the $K \bar K$ production in heavy-ion collisions above 5 A GeV and improve an agreement with data on the $K^+/π^+$ ratio. Finally, we study the influence of the in-medium modifications of the FRITIOF model on the pion and kaon production.

Quark Initial State Interaction in Deep Inelastic Scattering and the Drell-Yan process

We pursue a phenomenological study of higher twist effects in high energy processes by taking into account the off-shellness (virtuality) of partons bound in the nucleon. The effect of parton off-shellness in deep inelastic ep->eX scattering and the Drell-Yan process (pp->l+ l- X) is examined. Assuming factorization and a single-parameter Breit-Wigner form for the parton spectral function, we develop a model to calculate the corresponding off-shell cross sections. Allowing for a finite parton width of the order of 100 MeV, we reproduce the data of both DIS and the triple differential Drell-Yan cross section without an additional K-factor. The results are compared to those from perturbative QCD and the intrinsic-kT approach.

Hadron attenuation in deep inelastic lepton-nucleus scattering

We present a detailed theoretical investigation of hadron attenuation in deep inelastic scattering (DIS) off complex nuclei in the kinematic regime of the HERMES experiment. The analysis is carried out in the framework of a probabilistic coupled-channel transport model based on the Boltzmann-Uehling-Uhlenbeck (BUU) equation, which allows for a treatment of the final-state interactions (FSI) beyond simple absorption mechanisms. Furthermore, our event-by-event simulations account for the kinematic cuts of the experiments as well as the geometrical acceptance of the detectors. We calculate the multiplicity ratios of charged hadrons for various nuclear targets relative to deuterium as a function of the photon energy nu, the hadron energy fraction z_h=E_h/nu and the transverse momentum p_T. We also confront our model results on double-hadron attenuation with recent experimental data. Separately, we compare the attenuation of identified hadrons (pi^\pm, π^0, K^\pm, p and pbar) on Ne and Kr targets with the data from the HERMES Collaboration and make predictions for a Xe target. At the end we turn towards hadron attenuation on Cu nuclei at EMC energies. Our studies demonstrate that (pre-)hadronic final-state interactions play a dominant role in the kinematic regime of the HERMES experiment while our present approach overestimates the attenuation at EMC energies.

Spin-5/2 resonance contributions to the pion-induced reactions for energies $\sqrt{s}\leqslant$2.0 GeV

The spin-$\ffh$ resonance effects are studied within the coupled channel effective Lagrangian model for baryon resonance analysis. We extend our previous hadronic calculations to incorporate the $D_{15}$, $F_{15}$, $D_{35}$, $F_{35}$ states. While the effect of the spin-$\ffh$ resonances to the $ηN$, $K Λ$, and $K Σ$ reactions are small, the contribution to the $ωN$ is found to be important. The results for the 'conventional' and Pascalutsa-like spin-$\ffh$ descriptions are discussed. \PACS{{11.80.-m},{13.75.Gx},{14.20.Gk},{13.30.Gk}}

Ground state correlations in Deep Inelastic Scattering and the Drell-Yan process

Non-perturbative corrections to the LO cross section formulae for DIS and the Drell-Yan process were calculated. The interaction of partons was taken into account via dressing the incoming quark lines with spectral functions. We found the effect of ground state correlation in DIS to be large in the region of small Bjorken x and low momentum transfer Q. For a quark width of the order of 200 MeV, the deviation from parton model cross section reaches as much as 50% for Q^2=10 GeV^2. On the other hand, for the values of Q well above the resonance region, the effect of ISI turned out to be small in DIS, but still substantial for the triple differential Drell-Yan cross section. Our calculations show that the shape of the high mass Drell-Yan pair transverse momentum distribution is fully determined by quark off-shellness. From comparison to the resent data on the Drell-Yan cross section from NuSea collaboration, we obtained for the quark width in the nucleon the value about 200 MeV.

In-medium Properties of Hadrons -- Observables

We first briefly review the theoretical basis for calculations of changes of hadronic properties in dense nuclear matter. These changes have usually been investigated by means of relativistic heavy-ion reactions. Here we discuss that observable consequences of such changes can also be seen in more elementary reactions on nuclei. Particular emphasis is put on a discussion of actual observables in photonuclear reactions; we discuss in detail $η$- and vector-meson production. We show that photoproduction of $η$'s can yield essential information on in-medium properties of the $S_{11}(1535)$ resonance while the $ϕ$ meson properties will probably not be accessible through the $K^+K^-$ decay channel. However, for $ω$ mesons the $π^0γ$ decay channel, due to its reduced final state interaction, looks more promising in this respect. Completely free of final state interactions is dilepton production in the few GeV range. We show that the sensitivity of this decay channel to changes of hadronic properties in medium in photonuclear reactions on nuclei is as large as in ultrarelativistic heavy ion collisions. Finally we discuss that hadron production in nuclei at 10 -- 20 GeV photon energies can give important information on the hadronization process.

Incoherent rho^0 electroproduction off nuclei

In the present paper we investigate incoherent rho^0 electroproduction off complex nuclei. We derive a novel, simple expression for the incoherent electroproduction cross section in which one can clearly separate the final state interactions of the reaction products from the 'initial state interactions' of the photon that give rise to nuclear shadowing. In the special case of purely absorptive final state interactions we deduce from our expression the known Glauber result. A more realistic treatment of the final state interactions within a transport model is then used to compare our predictions with experimental data from the HERMES experiment.

The N N -> N Delta cross section in nuclear matter

We present calculations of the N N -> N Delta cross section in nuclear matter within the one-pion exchange model taking into account pion collectivity, vertex renormalization by the contact nuclear interactions and Dirac effective masses of the baryons due to coupling with the scalar sigma field. Introducing the Dirac effective masses leads to an in-medium reduction of the cross section. The experimental data on pion multiplicities from the collisions of Ca+Ca, Ru+Ru and Au+Au at 0.4-1.5 A GeV are well described by BUU calculations with the in-medium cross section.

Off-shell pions in Boltzmann-Uehling-Uhlenbeck transport theory

Due to large pi N --> Delta cross section a pion acquires a large width in nuclear matter. Therefore, a Delta-resonance decaying in the nuclear medium can produce far off-shell pions, which will gradually lose their virtuality while propagating to the vacuum. To describe such off-shell dynamics, we implemented a pion spectral function for finite nuclear matter density -- calculated on the basis of the Delta-hole model -- in the BUU transport approach. The pion off-shell dynamics leads to an enhancement of the low-p_t pion yields in the collisions of Au+Au at 1 A GeV.

Pi N -> Omega N in a Coupled-Channel Approach

We describe the pi N -> omega N cross section from threshold to a center of mass energy of 2 GeV in a unitary coupled-channel model and analyze it in terms of rescattering and resonance excitations. The amplitude is mainly composed of D13, P13, and P11 contributions, where the D13 dominates over the complete considered energy range. We also outline the generalization of the standard partial-wave formalism necessary for the decomposition of the omega N final state.

Resonance lifetime in Boltzmann-Uehling-Uhlenbeck theory: observable consequences

Within the transport BUU theory we study the influence of the choice for the $Δ$ resonance lifetime on pion-nucleus reactions and on heavy-ion collisions at 1 A GeV. A quite small effect of these modifications on the pion absorption on nuclei is found provided that the absorption probability of the $Δ$ resonance is modified consistently. Observable effects in the case of heavy-ion collisions are demonstrated.

Quenching of resonance production in heavy-ion collisions at 1-2 A GeV

We study the pion production in heavy-ion collisions at SIS energies within the coupled resonance BUU model. The standard calculation overpredicts the pion multiplicity in the central Au+Au collision at 1 A GeV by about a factor of 2, which is interpreted as a signature for the quenching of the resonance production/absorption in nucleon-nucleon collisions at high nuclear density. Results of the calculations taking into account a specific form of quenching are presented for pion spectra from light and heavy systems as well as for the pion in-plane and out-of-plane flow.

Squeeze-out of nuclear matter in peripheral heavy-ion collisions and momentum-dependent effective interactions

We perform a systematic study of in-plane and out-of-plane proton and neutron flow from nucleus-nucleus collisions within the BUU transport approach employing different parameter sets for the mean-field potentials that can be characterized by the nuclear incompressibility and the stiffness of the momentum-dependent potential. We find that a simultaneous description of the experimental data from the BEVALAC and the SIS on both the nucleon squeeze-out $v_2$ and the in-plane flow $F$ at beam energies $E_{lab} = 0.15 ÷2$ AGeV requires a mean field with strong momentum dependence, i.e. an effective Landau mass $m^* \simeq 0.68 m_0$ at normal nuclear matter density $ρ_0=0.17$ fm$^{-3}$, where $m_0=0.938$ GeV is the bare nucleon mass. Some experimental data on the squeeze-out require an even stiffer momentum dependence ($m^* \approx 0.62 m_0$). All systems investigated are found to be compatible with $m^*/m_0 = 0.65 \pm 0.03$.

(p,π^+-) correlations in central heavy-ion collisions at 1-2 AGeV

The proton - charged pion correlated emission is studied in the reactions Au (1.06 AGeV) + Au, Ni (1.06 and 1.93 AGeV) + Ni and Ni (1.97 AGeV) + Cu within the BUU approach. The associated invariant mass distributions are shifted to smaller energies with respect to the free $Δ(1232)$ mass distribution due to kinematical reasons. We find that the existing and partly conflicting experimental data do not allow to draw definite conclusions on the in-medium modification of the $Δ(1232)$.

Baryon flow at SIS energies

We calculate the baryon flow $< P_x/A(y) >$ in the energy range from .25 to $\le 2.5 AGeV$ in a relativistic transport model for $Ni+Ni$ and $Au+Au$ collisions employing various models for the baryon self energies. We find that to describe the flow data of the FOPI Collaboration the strength of the vector potential has to be reduced at high relative momentum or at high density such that the Schrödinger- equivalent potential at normal nuclear density decreases above 1 GeV relative kinetic energy and approaches zero above 2 GeV.

Pion-Production in Heavy-Ion Collisions at SIS energies

We investigate the production of pions in heavy-ion collisions in the energy range of $1$ - $2$ GeV/A. The dynamics of the nucleus-nucleus collisions is described by a set of coupled transport equations of the Boltzmann-Uehling-Uhlenbeck type for baryons and mesons. Besides the $N(938)$ and the $Δ(1232)$ we also take into account nucleon resonances up to masses of $1.9 GeV/c^2$ as well as $π$-, $η$- and $ρ$-mesons. We study in detail the influence of the higher baryonic resonances and the $2π$-production channels ($NN\to NN ππ$) on the pion spectra in comparison to $π^-$ data from $Ar + KCl$ collisions at $1.8$ GeV/A and $π^0$-data for $Au+Au$ at 1.0 GeV/A. We, furthermore, present a detailed comparison of differential pion angular distributions with the BEVALAC data for Ar + KCl at 1.8 GeV/A. The general agreement obtained indicates that the overall reactions dynamics is well described by our novel transport approach.

RPA-Approach to the Excitations of the Nucleon, Part I: Theory

In this paper we develop a theoretical framework which allows us to study excitations of the nucleon. Assuming an effective two-body interaction as a model for low-energy QCD, we derive a relativistic TDHF equation for a many-body system of quarks. To render the Dirac-sea contribution tothe mean field finite, we introduce a symmetry conserving regularization scheme. In the small amplitude limit we derive an RPA equation. The structure of the $ph$ interaction and modifications due to the regularization scheme are discussed. We give a prescription to obtain a nucleon state with good angular momentum (J) and isospin (T) quantum numbers on mean-field level. To study excitations, we develop a tensor-RPA approach, which is an extension of the conventional RPA techniques to systems with a nonscalar ground state. This allows us to construct excited states with good (J/T) quantum numbers. We discuss a method to reduce the overcomplete $ph$-space and compute the tensor-RPA interaction matrix elements. Finally we extend our scheme to include ({3/2}^+, {3/2})-states.

Dilepton Production in Elementary Processes on the Nucleon

We study elementary processes for production of dileptons from nucleons, either through NN bremsstrahlung or through photon-induced reactions. We emphasize the dependence of the expected cross-sections on the electromagnetic formfactor of the nucleon in the time-like regime and point out that the mentioned reactions can provide important information on the validity of vector meson dominance for the nucleon. We also study the off-shell dependence of the formfactors.
