Spectroscopic and first principle DFT+eDMFT study of complex structural, electronic, and vibrational properties of $M_2$Mo$_3$O$_8$ ($M$=Fe, Mn) polar magnets

Optical spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction measurements, density functional theory (DFT) and density functional theory + embedded dynamical mean field theory (DFT+eDMFT) have been used to characterize structural and electronic properties of hexagonal $M_2$Mo$_3$O$_8$ ($M$=Fe, Mn) polar magnets. Our experimental data are consistent with the room temperature structure belonging to the space group P6$_3$mc for both compounds. The experimental structural and electronic properties at room temperature are well reproduced within DFT+eDMFT method, thus establishing its predictive power in the paramagnetic phase. With decreasing temperature, both compounds undergo a magnetic phase transition and we argue that this transition is concurrent with a structural phase transition (symmetry change from P6$_3$mc) in the Fe compound and an isostructural transition (no symmetry change from P6$_3$mc) in the Mn compound. In addition, the unusual temperature dependent behavior of electronic d-d transitions in Fe$^{2+}$ ions is discussed.

A broadband silicon quarter-wave retarder for far-infrared spectroscopic circular dichroism

The high brightness, broad spectral coverage and pulsed characteristics of infrared synchrotron radiation enable time-resolved spectroscopy under throughput-limited optical systems, as can occur with the high-field magnet cryostat systems used to study electron dynamics and cyclotron resonance by far-infrared techniques. A natural extension for magnetospectroscopy is to sense circular dichroism, i.e. the difference in a material's optical response for left and right circularly polarized light. A key component for spectroscopic circular dichroism is an achromatic 1/4 wave retarder functioning over the spectral range of interest. We report here the development of an in-line retarder using total internal reflection in high-resistivity silicon. We demonstrate its performance by distinguishing electronic excitations of different handednesses for GaAs in a magnetic field. This 1/4 wave retarder is expected to be useful for far-infrared spectroscopy of circular dichroism in many materials.

Splitting of a nondegenerate phonon mode in PrFe3(BO3)4: 4f crystal-field level between TO and LO phonon frequencies

A new effect originating from the crystal-field-excitation - phonon coupling was observed (in the far infrared spectra of a multiferroic PrFe3(BO3)4). The reststrahlen band corresponding to the A2 symmetry nondegenerate phonon mode near 50 cm-1 (1.5 THz) splits into two bands at about 100 K, well above TN = 32 K. These bands shift and narrow progressively with further lowering the temperature, demonstrating pronounced peculiarities at TN. The observed effects were explained by an interaction of the A2 phonon mode with the 4f crystal-field electronic excitation of Pr3+ whose frequency falls into the TO - LO frequency region of the phonon mode. Inversion of the TO and LO frequencies for the electronic excitation and a formation of coupled electron-phonon modes are discussed. Fitting of the TO frequency vs temperature experimental plots by theoretical curves revealed the value 14.6 cm-1 for the electron-phonon coupling constant.

Fano Resonances in the Infrared Spectra of Phonons in Hyper-Kagome Na_3Ir_3O_8

We report the complex dielectric function of high-quality Na_3Ir_3O_8 single crystals determined by spectroscopic ellipsometry in the spectral range from 15 meV to 2 eV. The far-infrared phonon spectra exhibit highly asymmetric line shapes characteristic of Fano resonances. With decreasing temperature, we observe a sharp increase of the infrared intensity of the Fano-shaped phonon modes accompanied by concomitant changes in the low energy electronic background, formed by electronic transitions between Ir 5d t_2g bands of a mostly J_eff = 1/2 character. The role of the complex Hyper-Kagome lattice structure and strong spin-orbit coupling is considered.

Magnons and crystal field transitions in hexagonal REMnO3 (RE = Er, Tm, Yb, Lu) single crystals

Far-infrared optical transmission spectra of the antiferromagnetic resonances, or magnons, and crystal field transitions have been studied in hexagonal REMnO3 (RE = Er, Tm, Yb, Lu) single crystals. The magnon and CF frequencies, their oscillator strengths, and effective g-factors have been measured using external magnetic fields up to 9 T in the temperature range between 1.5 K and 100 K. The magnon frequency increases systematically with a decrease of the RE ion radius. The magnetic ordering of RE ions (RE=Er, Tm, Yb) was observed at low temperatures T<3.5 K and in strong external magnetic fields. The observed effects are analyzed taking into account main magnetic interactions in the system including exchange of the Mn3+ spins with RE3+ paramagnetic moments.

Modeling of electromagnetic wave propagation and spectra of optical excitations in complex media using 4x4 matrix formalism

Using 4x4 matrix formalism we analyzed electromagnetic wave propagation and Jones matrix components for reflectivity and transmittivity in bi-anisotropic materials. Analytic formulas for complex reflection and transmission coefficients for bi-anisotropic materials in both semi-infinite and thin-film configurations have been derived. The obtained results are applicable for analysis of the optical spectra of multiferroic crystals and metamaterials. The Adjusted Oscillator Strength Matching Condition (AOSM) for hybrid magnetic- and electric-dipole excitations in anisotropic multiferroics is derived for oblique angles of incidence. Mueller Matrices are used to simulate spectra of magneto-electric and chiral excitations and methods to distinguish them are discussed.

Optical identification of hybrid magnetic and electric excitations in Dy3Fe5O12 garnet

Far-infrared spectra of magneto-dielectric Dy3Fe5O12 garnet were studied between 13 and 100 cm-1 and at low temperatures between 5 and 80 K. A combination of transmission, reflectivity, and rotating analyzer ellipsometry was used to unambiguously identify the type of the dipole activity of the infrared modes. In addition to purely dielectric and magnetic modes, we observed several hybrid modes with a mixed magnetic and electric dipole activity. These modes originate from the superexchange between magnetic moments of Fe and Dy ions. Using 4x4 matrix formalism for materials with Mu=/=1, we modeled the experimental optical spectra and determined the far-infrared dielectric and magnetic permeability functions. The matching condition Mu(Wh)*Se=Eps(Wh)*Sm for the oscillator strengths Se(m) explains the observed vanishing of certain hybrid modes at Wh in reflectivity.

Coupling between magnon and ligand-field excitations in magnetoelectric Tb3Fe5O12 garnet

The spectra of far-infrared transmission in Tb3Fe5O12 magnetoelectric single crystals have been studied in the range between 15 and 100 cm-1, in magnetic fields up to 10 T, and for temperatures between 5 and 150 K. We attribute some of the observed infrared-active excitations to electric-dipole transitions between ligand-field split states of Tb3+ ions. Anticrossing between the magnetic exchange excitation and the ligand-field transition occurs at the temperature between 60 and 80 K. The corresponding coupling energy for this interaction is 6 cm-1. Temperature-induced softening of the hybrid IR excitation correlates with the increase of the static dielectric constant. We discuss the possibility for hybrid excitations of magnons and ligand-field states and their possible connection to the magnetoelectric effect in Tb3Fe5O12.

Mueller matrices for anisotropic metamaterials generated using 4x4 matrix formalism

Forward models for the Mueller Matrix (MM) components of materials with relative magnetic permeability tensor μ \neq 1 are studied. 4x4 matrix formalism is employed to produce general solutions for the complex reflection coefficients and MMs of dielectric-magnetic materials having arbitrary crystal symmetry and arbitrary laboratory orientation. For certain orientations of materials with simultaneously diagonalizable ε and μ tensors (with coincident principal axes), analytic solutions to the Berreman equation are available. For the single layer thin film configuration of these materials, analytic formulas for the complex reflection and transmission coefficients are derived for orthorhombic or higher crystal symmetry. The separation of the magnetic and dielectric contributions to the optical properties of a material are demonstrated using measurements of the MM at varying angles of incidence.
