Non-demolition Adiabatic Measurement of the Phase Qubit State

An adiabatic method for a single-shot non-demolition measurement of the phase qubit is suggested. The qubit is inductively coupled to a low-frequency resonator, which in turn is connected with a classical measurement device (phase meter). The resonator drives adiabatic oscillations of the supercurrent in the qubit loop. The back reaction of the qubit loop on the resonator depends on the qubit state. Measuring the phase shift of the resonator's oscillations one can determine the state of the qubit. Numerical computations with available experimental parameters show that the phase difference between the two qubit states increases at a rate of 0.0044 rad/ns with the fidelity of about 0.9989 and the measurement time of about 100 ns. The fidelity of the measurement is estimated taking into consideration possible quantum transitions inside and outside the qubit manifold. An increase of the phase difference is possible but it is linked to a reduction of the fidelity. The requirements for the reproducibility of the qubit and resonator parameters are formulated.

The Renormalization Effects in the Microstrip-SQUID Amplifier

The peculiarities of the microstrip-DC SQUID amplifier caused by the resonant structure of the input circuit are analyzed. It is shown that the mutual inductance, that couples the input circuit and the SQUID loop, depends on the frequency of electromagnetic field. The renormalization of the SQUID parameters due to the screening effect of the input circuit vanishes when the Josephson frequency is much greater than the signal frequency.

Transitional dynamics of a phase qubit-resonator system: requirements for fast readout of a phase qubit

We examine the non-stationary evolution of a coupled qubit-transmission line-resonator system coupled to an external drive and the resonator environment. By solving the equation for a non-stationary resonator field, we determined the requirements for a single-shot non-destructive dispersive measurement of the phase qubit state. Reliable isolation of the qubit from the "electromagnetic environment" is necessary for a dispersive readout and can be achieved if the whole system interacts with the external fields only through the resonator that is weakly coupled to the qubit. A set of inequalities involving resonator-qubit detuning and coupling parameter, the resonator leakage and the measurement time, together with the requirement of multi-photon outgoing flux is derived. It is shown, in particular, that a decrease of the measurement time requires an increase of the resonator leakage. This increase results in reducing the quality factor and decreasing the resolution of the resonator eigenfrequencies corresponding to different qubit states. The consistent character of the derived inequalities for two sets of experimental parameters is discussed. The obtained results will be useful for optimal design of experimental setups, parameters, and measurement protocols.

Influence of Phase Diffuser Dynamics on Scintillations of Laser Radiation in Earth Atmosphere: Long-Distance Propagation

The effect of a random phase diffuser on fluctuations of laser light (scintillations) is studied. Not only spatial but also temporal phase variations introduced by the phase diffuser are analyzed. The explicit dependence of the scintillation index on finite-time phase variations is obtained for long propagation paths. It is shown that for large amplitudes of phase fluctuations, a finite-time effect decreases the ability of phase diffuser to suppress the scintillations.
