Direct observation of magnetic monopole freedom in two-dimensional artificial spin ice

Magnetic monopole unpairing as a function of external magnetic fields is presented as a fingerprint of this emergent quasiparticles freedom in a two-dimensional artificial spin ice system. Such freedom, required for example for further application in magnetricity, is only possible due to ground-state degeneracy, which causes a decreasing of the string energy in rectangular geometries, designed to allow highest equidistance among nanomagnets. We show by simulations that spin correlation in different rectangular artificial spin ices evolves from antiferromagnetic ordered magnetic structure to a ferromagnetic one, passing through an ice regime were pinch points related to Coulomb phase are observed. By measurements of magnetic force microscopy, we observe magnetic monopole creation, transport and annihilation in such systems with free monopoles created and transported throughout the sample without strings attached, as is commonly observed in conventional artificial spin ice systems.

Preparation of Long-Lived, Non-Autoionizing Circular Rydberg States of Strontium

Alkaline earth Rydberg atoms are very promising tools for quantum technologies. Their highly excited outer electron provides them with the remarkable properties of Rydberg atoms and, notably, with a huge coupling to external fields or to other Rydberg atoms while the ionic core retains an optically active electron. However, low angular-momentum Rydberg states suffer almost immediate autoionization when the core is excited. Here, we demonstrate that strontium circular Rydberg atoms with a core excited in a $4D$ metastable level are impervious to autoionization over more than a few millisecond time scale. This makes it possible to trap and laser-cool Rydberg atoms. Moreover, we observe singlet to triplet transitions due to the core optical manipulations, opening the way to a quantum microwave to optical interface.

Feedback-cooling of an atomic spin ensemble

We describe a measurement-and-feedback technique to deterministically prepare low-entropy states of atomic spin ensembles. Using quantum non-demolition measurement and incoherent optical feedback, we drive arbitrary states in the spin-orientation space toward the origin of the spin space. We observe 12 dB of spin noise reduction, or a factor of 63 reduction in phase-space volume. We find optimal feedback conditions and show that multi-stage feedback is advantageous. An input-output calculation of quantum noise incorporating realistic quantum noise sources and experimental limitations agrees well with the observations. The method may have application to generation of exotic phases of ultracold gases, for example macroscopic singlet states and valence-bond solids.

Two-dimensional magnetic interactions in LaFeAsO

Inelastic neutron scattering measurements demonstrate that the magnetic interactions in antiferromagnetic LaFeAsO are two-dimensional. Spin wave velocities within the Fe layer and the magnitude of the spin gap are similar to the \textit{A}Fe$_2$As$_2$ based materials. However, the ratio of interlayer and intralayer exchange is found to be less than $\sim 10^{-4}$ in LaFeAsO, very similar to the cuprates, and $\sim$ 100 times smaller than that found in \textit{A}Fe$_2$As$_2$ compounds. The results suggest that the effective dimensionality of the magnetic system is highly variable in the parent compounds of the iron arsenides and weak 3-D interactions may limit the maximum attainable superconducting $T_{c}$.

Gas gun shock experiments with single-pulse x-ray phase contrast imaging and diffraction at the Advanced Photon Source

The highly transient nature of shock loading and pronounced microstructure effects on dynamic materials response call for {\it in situ}, temporally and spatially resolved, x-ray-based diagnostics. Third-generation synchrotron x-ray sources are advantageous for x-ray phase contrast imaging (PCI) and diffraction under dynamic loading, due to their high photon energy, high photon fluxes, high coherency, and high pulse repetition rates. The feasibility of bulk-scale gas gun shock experiments with dynamic x-ray PCI and diffraction measurements was investigated at the beamline 32ID-B of the Advanced Photon Source. The x-ray beam characteristics, experimental setup, x-ray diagnostics, and static and dynamic test results are described. We demonstrate ultrafast, multiframe, single-pulse PCI measurements with unprecedented temporal ($<$100 ps) and spatial ($\sim$2 $μ$m) resolutions for bulk-scale shock experiments, as well as single-pulse dynamic Laue diffraction. The results not only substantiate the potential of synchrotron-based experiments for addressing a variety of shock physics problems, but also allow us to identify the technical challenges related to image detection, x-ray source, and dynamic loading.

Summing Radiative Corrections to the Effective Potential

When one uses the Coleman-Weinberg renormalization condition, the effective potential $V$ in the massless $ϕ_4^4$ theory with O(N) symmetry is completely determined by the renormalization group functions. It has been shown how the $(p+1)$ order renormalization group function determine the sum of all the N$^{\mbox{\scriptsize p}}$LL order contribution to $V$ to all orders in the loop expansion. We discuss here how, in addition to fixing the N$^{\mbox{\scriptsize p}}$LL contribution to $V$, the $(p+1)$ order renormalization group functions also can be used to determine portions of the N$^{\mbox{\scriptsize p+n}}$LL contributions to $V$. When these contributions are summed to all orders, the singularity structure of \mcv is altered. An alternate rearrangement of the contributions to $V$ in powers of $\ln ϕ$, when the extremum condition $V^\prime (ϕ= v) = 0$ is combined with the renormalization group equation, show that either $v = 0$ or $V$ is independent of $ϕ$. This conclusion is supported by showing the LL, $\cdots$, N$^4$LL contributions to $V$ become progressively less dependent on $ϕ$.
