Verbal subgroups of hyperbolic groups have infinite width

preprint2014arXivOpen access

Abstract

Let GG be a non-elementary hyperbolic group. Let ww be a group word such that the set w[G]w[G] of all its values in GG does not coincide with GG or 1. We show that the width of verbal subgroup w(G)=<w[G]>w(G)=<w[G]> is infinite. That is, there is no such l∈Zl\in\mathbb Z that any g∈w(G)g\in w(G) can be represented as a product of ≤l\le l values of ww and their inverses.
