The divisor function in arithmetic progressions modulo prime powers

preprint2016arXivOpen access

Abstract

We study the average value of the divisor function τ(n)τ(n) for n≤xn\le x with n≡a mod qn \equiv a \bmod q. The divisor function is known to be evenly distributed over arithmetic progressions for all qq that are a little smaller than x2/3x^{2/3}. We show how to go past this barrier when q=pkq=p^k for odd primes pp and any fixed integer k≥7k\ge 7.
