Study of Particle Ratio Fluctuations and Charge Balance Functions at RHIC

The study of correlations between opposite-sign charge pairs and particle-ratio fluctuations can provide a powerful tool to probe the properties of the quark-gluon plasma (QGP). It has been suggested that the existence of a QCD phase transition would cause an increase and divergence of fluctuations. Thus the event-by-event particle-ratio fluctuations could be used to study strangeness and baryon number fluctuations near the critical point in the QCD phase diagram. On the other hand, the study of the balance function can provide information about charge creation time as well as the subsequent collective behavior of particles. For fluctuations we present dynamical $K/π$, $p/π$, and $K/p$ ratio fluctuations from Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}}$ = 7.7 to 200 GeV at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider using the STAR detector. Charge dependent results as well as multiplicity scaling properties of these fluctuation results are discussed. The STAR data are compared to different theoretical model predictions and previous experimental measurements. For balance functions we present results for charged particle pairs, identified charged pion pairs, and identified charged kaon pairs in Au+Au, $d$+Au, and $p+p$ collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}}$ = 200 GeV. These balance functions are presented in terms of relative pseudorapidity, $Δη$, relative rapidity, $Δy$, relative azimuthal angle, $Δϕ$, and invariant relative momentum, $q_{\rm inv}$. In addition, balance functions are shown in terms of the three components of $q_{\rm inv}$: $q_{\rm long}$, $q_{\rm out}$, and $q_{\rm side}$. Beam energy and reaction-plane-dependent balance functions are also discussed in this paper.
