On the Characterization of Alternating Groups by Codegrees

preprint2023arXivOpen access

Abstract

Let GG be a finite group and Irr(G)\mathrm{Irr}(G) the set of all irreducible complex characters of GG. Define the codegree of χ∈Irr(G)χ\in \mathrm{Irr}(G) as cod(χ):=∣G:ker(χ)∣χ(1)\mathrm{cod}(χ):=\frac{|G:\mathrm{ker}(χ) |}{χ(1)} and denote by cod(G):={cod(χ)∣χ∈Irr(G)}\mathrm{cod}(G):=\{\mathrm{cod}(χ) \mid χ\in \mathrm{Irr}(G)\} the codegree set of GG. Let An\mathrm{A}_n be an alternating group of degree n≥5n \ge 5. In this paper, we show that An\mathrm{A}_n is determined up to isomorphism by cod(An)\mathrm{cod}(\mathrm{A}_n).
