Higgs-Squark-Slepton Inflation from the MSSM

The inflation within the MSSM is proposed, where the inflaton field is a combination of the Higgs, squark and slepton states. While the inflationary phase is fully governed by the electron Yukawa superpotential coupling, the fields' condensates float along the flat $D$-term trajectory. This predicts the MSSM parameter $\tan β\simeq 13.1$ determined via the value of the curvature perturbation amplitude. The values of the scalar spectral index and the tensor-to-scalar ratio are predicted to be $n_s\simeq 0.966$ and $r=0.00118$. The postinflation reheating of the Universe proceeds by the radiative decay of the inflaton to the two gluons ($ϕ\to gg$) with the reheating temperature $T_r\simeq 1.4\cdot 10^7$ GeV.

Neutrino Mass Matrices from Two Zero 3x2 Yukawa Textures and Minimal d=5 Entries

Aiming to relate leptonic CP violating phase $δ$ to the cosmological CP asymmetry, we study the extension of MSSM by two quasi-degenerate (strictly degenerate at tree level) right-handed neutrinos and consider all possible two texture zero 3x2 Yukawa matrices plus one $ΔL=2$ dimension five (d=5) operator contributing to the light neutrino mass matrix. We classify all experimentally viable mass matrices, leading to several predictions, and analytically derive predictive relations. We also relate the CP violating $δ$ phase to the CP phase of the thermal leptogenesis.

Soft See-Saw: Radiative Origin of Neutrino Masses in SUSY Theories

Radiative neutrino mass generation within supersymmetric (SUSY) construction is studied. The mechanism is considered where the lepton number violation is originating from the soft SUSY breaking terms. This requires MSSM extensions with states around the TeV scale. We present several explicit realizations based on extensions either by MSSM singlet or SU(2)_w triplet states. Besides some novelties of the proposed scenarios, various phenomenological implications are also discussed.

Natural Inflation from 5D SUGRA and Low Reheat Temperature

Motivated by recent cosmological observations of a possibly unsuppressed primordial tensor component $r$ of inflationary perturbations, we reanalyse in detail the 5D conformal SUGRA originated natural inflation model of Ref. [1]. The model is a supersymmetric variant of 5D extra natural inflation, also based on a shift symmetry, and leads to the potential of natural inflation. Coupling the bulk fields generating the inflaton potential via a gauge coupling to the inflaton with brane SM states we necessarily obtain a very slow gauge inflaton decay rate and a very low reheating temperature $T_r\stackrel{<}{_\sim }{\cal O}(100)$~GeV. Analysis of the required number of e-foldings (from the CMB observations) leads to values of $n_s$ in the lower range of present Planck 2015 results. Some related theoretical issues of the construction, along with phenomenological and cosmological implications, are also discussed.

SU(5)xSU(5)' unification and D2 parity: Model for composite leptons

We study a grand unified SU(5)xSU(5)' model supplemented by D2 parity. The D2 greatly reduces the number of parameters and is important for phenomenology. The model, we present, has various novel and interesting properties. Because of the specific pattern of grand unification symmetry breaking and emerged strong dynamics at low energies, the Standard Model leptons, along with right-handed/sterile neutrinos, come out as composite states. The generation of the charged fermion and neutrino masses are studied within the considered scenario. Moreover, the issues of gauge coupling unification and nucleon stability are investigated in details. Various phenomenological implications are also discussed.

Three Family SU(5) GUT and Inverted Neutrino Mass Hierarchy

Supersymmetric SU(5) GUT augmented with anomaly free U(1)_F flavor symmetry is presented. Very economical field content and U(1)_F charge assignment are obtained by specific construction. In particular, three families of 10+5* chiral matter, along the SU(5) singlet states (some of which serve as right handed neutrinos) are obtained. Appealing texture zero Yukawa matrices provide natural understanding of hierarchies between charged fermion masses and mixings. The model predicts inverted hierarchical neutrino mass scenario with interesting implications.

New Flavor U(1)_F Symmetry for SUSY SU(5)

Within supersymmetric SU(5) Grand Unified Theory, we present several new scenarios with anomaly free flavor symmetry U(1)_F. Within each scenario, a variety of cases offer many possibilities for phenomenologically interesting model building. We present three concrete and economical models with anomaly free U(1)_F leading to natural understanding of observed hierarchies between charged fermion masses and CKM mixing angles.

Constraining Proton Lifetime in SO(10) with Stabilized Doublet-Triplet Splitting

We present a class of realistic unified models based on supersymmetric SO(10) wherein issues related to natural doublet-triplet (DT) splitting are fully resolved. Using a minimal set of low dimensional Higgs fields which includes a single adjoint, we show that the Dimopoulos--Wilzcek mechanism for DT splitting can be made stable in the presence of all higher order operators without having pseudo-Goldstone bosons and flat directions. The μterm of order TeV is found to be naturally induced. A Z_2-assisted anomalous U(1)_A gauge symmetry plays a crucial role in achieving these results. The threshold corrections to alpha_3(M_Z), somewhat surprisingly, are found to be controlled by only a few effective parameters. This leads to a very predictive scenario for proton decay. As a novel feature, we find an interesting correlation between the d=6 (p\to e^+π^0) and d=5 (p\to ν-bar K+) decay amplitudes which allows us to derive a constrained upper limit on the inverse rate of the e^+π^0 mode. Our results show that both modes should be observed with an improvement in the current sensitivity by about a factor of five to ten.

New Ways to Leptogenesis with Gauged B-L Symmetry

We show that in supersymmetric models with gauged B-L symmetry, there is a new source for cosmological lepton asymmetry. The Higgs bosons responsible for B-L gauge symmetry breaking decay dominantly into right-handed sneutrinos \tilde{N} and \tilde{N}* producing an asymmetry in \tilde{N} over \tilde{N}*. This can be fully converted into ordinary lepton asymmetry in the decays of \tilde{N}. In simple models with gauged B-L symmetry we show that resonant/soft leptogenesis is naturally realized. Supersymmetry guarantees quasi-degenerate scalar states, while soft breaking of SUSY provides the needed CP violation. Acceptable values of baryon asymmetry are obtained without causing serious problems with gravitino abundance.

Worldlines on Orbifolds and the Fayet-Iliopoulos Term

We adapt ``string-inspired'' worldline techniques to one-loop calculations on orbifolds, in particular on the $S^1/Z_2$ orbifold. Our method also allows for the treatment of brane-localized terms, or bulk-brane couplings. For demonstration, we reproduce the well-known result for the one-loop induced Fayet-Iliopoulos term in rigidly supersymmetric Abelian gauge theory, and generalize it to the case where soft supersymmetry breaking mass terms for the bulk scalar fields are present on the branes.

Neutrino Democracy And Other Phenomenology From 5D SO(10)

We present a five dimensional supersymmetric SO(10) model compactified on an orbifold $S^{(1)}/Z_2\tm Z_2'$. The gauge symmetry $G_{422}\equiv SU(4)_c\tm SU(2)_L\tm SU(2)_R$, realized on one of the fixed points (branes), is spontaneously broken to the MSSM via the higgs mechanism. Employing a flavor ${\cal U}(1)$ symmetry and suitably extending the 'matter' sector enables us to understand large mixings in the neutrino sector via a democratic approach, versus the small CKM mixings. A residual ${\cal R}$-symmetry on $G_{422}$ brane helps eliminate the troublesome dimension five nucleon decay, while the ${\cal U}(1)$ symmetry plays an essential role in suppressing dimension six decay. For rare leptonic decays we expect ${\rm BR}(μ\to e\ga)\sim {\rm BR}(τ\to μ\ga)\sim {\rm BR}(τ\to e\ga)$.

Democratic Approach To Atmospheric And Solar Neutrino Oscillations

Working with a ${\cal U}(1)$ flavor symmetry, we show how the hierarchical structure in the charged fermion sector and a democratic approach for neutrinos that yields large solar and atmospheric neutrino mixings can be simultaneously realized in the MSSM framework. However, in SU(5) due to the unified multiplets we encounter difficulties. Namely, democracy for the neutrinos leads to a wrong hierarchical pattern for charged fermion masses and mixings. We discuss how this is overcome in flipped SU(5).

Gauge Origin of Baryon Number Conservation and Suppressed Neutrino Masses From Five Dimensions

We consider a 5D SUSY $SU(3)_c\times SU(2)_L\times U(1)_Y\times {\cal U}(1)$ model compactified on an $S^{(1)}/Z_2$ orbifold. To cancel anomalies arising from the presence of ${\cal U}(1)$, we employ a Chern-Simons term and also chiral fields which could reside on the brane or in the bulk depending on the model. The presence of ${\cal U}(1)$ symmetry leads to baryon number conservation, gives rise to matter parity, and permits satisfactory neutrino masses and mixings even for a low fundamental scale. The brane Fayet-Iliopoulos D-terms naturally break ${\cal U}(1)$, leaving N=1 SUSY unbroken in 4 dimensions.

Neutrino Democracy, Fermion Mass Hierarchies And Proton Decay From 5D SU(5)

The explanation of various observed phenomena such as large angle neutrino oscillations, hierarchies of charged fermion masses and CKM mixings, and apparent baryon number conservation may have a common origin. We show how this could occur in 5D SUSY SU(5) supplemented by a ${\cal U}(1)$ flavor symmetry and additional matter supermultiplets called 'copies'. In addition, the proton decays into $p\to Kν$, with an estimated lifetime of order $10^{33}-10^{36}$ yrs. Other decay channels include $Ke$ and $Kμ$ with comparable rates. We also expect that BR$(μ\to eγ)\sim $BR$(τ\to μγ)$.

Axionic Domain Wall and Warped Geometry

We discuss how a three-brane with an associated non-factorizable (warped) geometry can emerge from a five dimensional theory of gravity coupled to a complex scalar field. The system possesses a discrete $Z_2$ symmetry, whose spontaneous breaking yields an 'axionic' three-brane and a warped metric. Analytic solutions for the wall profile and warp factor are presented. The Kaluza-Klein decomposition and some related issues are also discussed.

Naturally Light Neutrinos and Unification in Theories with Low Scale Quantum Gravity

Within low scale theories traditional see-saw and scalar triplet mechanisms, for neutrino mass suppression, do not work out anymore and for realistic model building some new ideas are needed. In this paper we suggest mechanism, different from existing ones, which provides natural suppression of the neutrino masses. The mechanism is realized through extended scalars of 4, 5 or 6 dimensional $SU(2)_L$ multiplets. Scenario, with fundamental mass scale $M_f$ in a $\sim 10^{3}$ TeV range, requires 4-plets guaranteeing neutrino masses $\stackrel{<}{\sim}1$ eV. For theories with $M_f= few \cdot 10$ TeV 5-plets should be involved, while in scenarios with $M_f=$ few TeV, 6-plets could be efficient. The considered mechanism could be successfully applied also for supersymmetric theories, building scenarios with various values of low $M_f$. Within considered models we also address the question of gauge coupling unification. For low scale unification, existence of compact extra dimensions turns out to be crucial. Due to additional scalar multiplets, some new examples of unification are found for both - non SUSY and SUSY cases. Within non SUSY scenarios introduced $SU(2)_L$ scalars take advantage and are important for successful unification.

Realistic Supersymmetric SU(6)

We present an example of SUSY SU(6) GUT, which predicts an excellent value for $\al_s(M_Z)(\simeq 0.119)$, in comparison with the value $\al_s^0(M_Z)\simeq 0.126$ of minimal SUSY SU(5). A crucial role is played by the vectorlike multiplets from the matter sector, whose masses lie below the GUT scale. For a realistic pattern of fermion masses, the adjoint scalar of SU(6) has VEV along the $SU(4)\times SU(2)\times U(1)$ direction. This also offers a natural resolution of the doublet-triplet (DT) splitting through the pseudo Goldstone Boson mechanism.

Anomalous Flavor U(1): Predictive Texture For Bi-maximal Neutrino Mixing

We present a scenario which naturally provides bi-maximal neutrino mixings for a simultaneous explanation of the recent atmospheric and solar neutrino data. A crucial role is played by an anomalous flavor ${\cal U}(1)$ symmetry, which is also important for a natural understanding of charged fermion mass hierarchies and magnitudes of the CKM matrix elements. Within MSSM the solar neutrino problem can be resolved either through vacuum oscillations or the large mixing angle MSW solution. In supersymmetric GUTs such as SU(5) and SO(10) the MSW solution is realized. If the flavor ${\cal U}(1)$ also mediates supersymmetry breaking, the vacuum solution in MSSM is eliminated, and only the large mixing angle MSW solution survives.

An Improved Supersymmetric SU(5)

By supplementing minimal supersymmetric SU(5) (MSSU(5)) with a flavor ${\cal U}(1)$ symmetry and two pairs of $\bar{15}+15$ `matter' supermultiplets, we present an improved model which explains the charged fermion mass hierarchies and the magnitudes of the CKM matrix elements, while avoiding the undesirable asymptotic mass relations $m_s=m_μ, m_d/m_s = m_e/m_μ$. The strong coupling $α_s (M_Z)$ is predicted to be approximately 0.115, and the proton lifetime is estimated to be about five times larger than the MSSU(5) value. The atmospheric and solar neutrino puzzles are respectively resolved via maximal $ν_μ-ν_τ$ and small mixing angle $ν_e-ν_s$ MSW oscillations, where $ν_s$ denotes a sterile neutrino. The ${\cal U}(1)$ symmetry ensures not only a light $ν_s$ but also automatic `matter' parity.

Atmospheric and Solar Neutrino Oscillations in \nuMSSM and Beyond

We show how a unified description of the various two-flavor neutrino oscillation solutions, allowed by the atmospheric and solar neutrino experiments, are naturally realized within the framework of $ν$MSSM (MSSM augmented with the seesaw mechanism) and beyond, especially grand unified theories. A general mechanism for achieving maximal mixing to resolve the atmospheric anomaly is discussed, and applied to the flipped SU(5) model. Except in the case of MSSM and SU(5), a light sterile neutrino is an inevitable consequence of our considerations. The bi-maximal neutrino mixing scenario is one of the options considered. Neutrino hot dark matter can arise in models with maximal $ν_μ-ν_s$ oscillations. A ${\cal U}(1)$ flavor symmetry, motivated by the charged fermion mass hierarchies and the magnitudes of the CKM matrix elements, plays a central role.

Bi-maximal Neutrino Mixings And Proton Decay In SO(10) With Anomalous Flavor ${\cal U}(1)$

By supplementing supersymmetric SO(10) with an anomalous ${\cal U}(1)$ flavor symmetry and additional `matter' superfields carrying suitable ${\cal U}(1)$ charges, we explain the charged fermion mass hierarchies, the magnitudes of the CKM matrix elements, as well as the solar and atmospheric neutrino data. We stress bi-maximal vacuum neutrino mixings, and indicate how the small or large mixing angle MSW solution can be incorporated. The ${\cal U}(1)$ symmetry also implies that $τ_{p\to Kν}[SO(10)]\sim (10-100)\cdot τ_{p\to Kν}[{\rm minimal}~SU(5)]$.

Flavor Problem, Proton Decay And Neutrino Oscillations In SUSY Models With Anomalous ${\cal U}(1)$

We discuss how realistic supersymmetric models can be constructed by employing an anomalous ${\cal U}(1)$ flavor symmetry which also mediates supersymmetry breaking. A judicious choice of ${\cal U}(1)$ charges enables the first two squark families to be sufficiently heavy ($\stackrel{>}{_\sim}10$ TeV), so that flavor changing neutral currents as well as dimension five nucleon decay are adequately suppressed. Using the SU(5) example, the charged fermion mass hierarchies, magnitudes of the CKM matrix elements, as well as the observed neutrino oscillations are simultaneously accommodated. We estimate the proton lifetime to be $τ_p\sim 10^3\cdot τ_p[{\rm minimal} SU(5)]$, with the decay mode $p\to Kμ$ being comparable to $p\to Kν_{μ, τ}$.

Neutrino Mixings and Fermion Masses in Supersymmetric SU(5)

We consider neutrino mixings in supersymmetric SU(5) supplemented by a U(1) flavor symmetry. In particular, we show how bi-maximal neutrino mixings can be realized. Two scenarios for implementing the small mixing angle MSW solution, with one involving a sterile state $ν_s$ and maximal $ν_μ-ν_s$ mixing to resolve the atmospheric anomaly, are also discussed. Finally, a new mechanism for eliminating the asymptotic relations $m^{(0)}_μ =m^{(0)}_s$ and $m^{(0)}_e=m^{(0)}_d$, while retaining $m^{(0)}_τ=m^{(0)}_b$, is presented. It employs `matter' multiplets in the $15+\bar{15}$ of SU(5), and is consistent with the various oscillation scenarios, as well as with the unification at $M_{GUT}$ of the three gauge couplings.

Phenomenology with Supersymmetric Flipped SU(6)

The supersymmetric flipped $SU(6)\times U(1)$ gauge symmetry can arise through compactification of the ten dimensional $E_8\times E_8$ superstring theory. We show how realistic phenomenology can emerge from this theory by supplementing it with the symmetry ${\cal R}\times {\cal U}(1)$, where ${\cal R}$ denotes a discrete `R'-symmetry. The well-known doublet-triplet splitting problem is resolved to `all orders' via the pseudo-Goldstone mechanism, and the GUT scale arises from an interplay of the Planck and supersymmetry breaking scales. The symmetry ${\cal R}\times {\cal U}(1)$ is also important for understanding the fermion mass hierarchies as well as the magnitudes of the CKM matrix elements. Furthermore, the well known MSSM parameter $\tan β$ is estimated to be of order unity, while the proton lifetime ($τ_p\sim 10^2τ_{pSU(5)}$) is consistent with observations. Depending on some parameters, $p\to Kμ^+ $ can be the dominant decay mode. Finally, the observed solar and atmospheric neutrino `anomalies' require us to introduce a `sterile' neutrino state. Remarkably, the ${\cal R}\times {\cal U}(1)$ symmetry protects it from becoming heavy, so that maximal angle $ν_μ$ oscillations into a sterile state can explain the atmospheric anomaly, while the solar neutrino puzzle is resolved via the small angle $ν_e-ν_τ$ MSW oscillations. The existence of some ($\sim 15 - 20% $ of critical energy density) neutrino hot dark matter is also predicted.

Proton Decay, Neutrino Oscillations And Other Consequences From Supersymmetric SU(6) With Pseudo-Goldstone Higgs

We suggest a new mechanism for naturally suppressing dimension five baryon number violating in supersymmetric SU(5+N) (N=0, 1,...) GUTs. The mechanism is realized through suppression of qqT type couplings, and is implemented by introducing new `matter' multiplets belonging to symmetric representations of SU(5+N). Together with the suppression of nucleon decay, these multiplets also enable one to avoid the unwanted asymptotic mass relations $m_s=m_μ$, $\frac{m_d}{m_s}=\frac{m_e}{m_μ}$. As an example, we consider a SU(6) model with pseudo-Goldstone Higgs. By supplementing the model with an anomalous ${\cal U}(1)$ flavor symmetry, we also obtain a simple `all-order' solution of the gauge hierarchy problem and natural explanation of charged fermion mass hierarchies and values of the CKM matrix elements. The proton life time $τ_p\sim 10^{2}τ_p^{SU(5)}$~yr. is compatible with experiments, with the dominant decay being $p\to Kν_{μ, τ}$. Thanks to the SU(6) symmetry, successful unification of the gauge couplings can be retained, and the value of the strong coupling $α_s(M_Z)$ can be reduced to $\simeq 0.12$. Finally, we show how to accommodate the solar and atmospheric neutrino data through the bi-maximal neutrino mixing scenario, with maximal vacuum $ν_e-ν_{μ, τ}$ and large angle $ν_μ-ν_τ$ oscillations.

Neutrino Oscillations and Other Key Issues in Supersymmetric SU(4)_c \times SU(2)_L \times$ SU(2)_R

We try to gain an understanding of the recent Superkamiokande data on neutrino oscillations and several other important phenomenological issues within the framework of supersymmetric $SU(4)_c \times SU(2)_L \times SU(2)_R$ ($\equiv G_{422}$). By supplementing $G_{422}$ with a U(1)-${\cal R}$ symmetry, we can provide an explanation of the magnitude $M_G$ ($\sim 10^{16}$ GeV) of the $G_{422}$- symmetry breaking scale, resolve the MSSM $μ$ problem, and understand why proton decay has not been seen ($τ_p \gg 10^{34}$ yr). The family dependent ${\cal R}$ - symmetry also helps provide an explanation of the charged fermion mass hierarchies as well as the magnitudes of the CKM matrix elements. Several additional heavy states in the mass range $10^4-10^7$ GeV are predicted, and the MSSM parameter $\tan β$ turns out to be of order unity. The atmospheric neutrino problem is explained through $ν_μ-ν_τ$ mixing with $\sin^2 2θ_{μτ}\simeq 1$. The resolution of the solar neutrino puzzle is via the small angle MSW oscillations and necessarily requires a sterile neutrino $ν_s$ which, thanks to the ${\cal R}$ - symmetry, has a tiny mass.
